  Hi Debleena5 and thanks for the suggestions, but I've reached the re-installation of the disc by using a bit 'out of the box' the thought process.

  I bought a box 2.5 "SATA to connect to any computer via the USB port to try to get something on the corrupted hard drive, but this failed. I then removed my new hard drive (which began at start up OK, as I mentioned in the question above) and placed in the case and plugged into my Windows 7 laptop. Once he had run up to speed I started to explore to see what files (or even at all) had been transferred during one of my recovery disks. I've not found much until I changed the "do not show hidden files and folders check" save a file that has been locked after you change the permissions, I went further and ended at the request of then ran CHKDISK and of course he scanned my drive and found and corrected some errors very quickly. After that, I unplugged then I went back to my Vista laptop and re-inserted the new hard drive in the broken machine.

  At this point, I was wondering if the disk drive on the machine may also have been damaged so I plugged a DVD player external via USB and changed the sequence to boot to the USB device. I started the laptop and the drive started to load the files and I could then complete the resettlement of these two disks and then to set up the machine as if I had just bought it.

  I'm very relieved that I managed to sort it out and now I have to upgrade to Windows 7 on this laptop that I read on and seems easy. Just a shame I can't copy the installation of my 2nd, portable more recent.

  I was wondering if there was a way to get windows 7 to look like windows xp then copy and paste files. I don't see the pop-up box asking you 'do you want to replace these files' on 7, I want to see this box and know that 7 will overwrite and copy everything.

I immediately thought 'virus' or ' fan isn't card graphic blown is screwed/false driver downloaded... I enter safe mode with network, no problem with the monitor (no lines) and tried driver restore, but also to download nividia the updated. Nothing seemed to work except safe mode (s), system configuration, start the Setup program, CTRL I (don't remember which menu is), & screen of the system restore/repair/diagnose.   I have installed Symantec disk full encryption and encrypted hard drive. Then I restarted the pc. I get a black screen with a blue HP logo in the Center.   From your description of the problem, it sounds as if you may have encrypted the whole disc rather than only the C: volume or the BIOS ROM file is damaged.

  You should be able to go beyond the HP screen to access the BIOS.

  The BIOS should give complain that it cannot find a drive with a bootable operating system.

  If this happens, and you have the recovery disk set or usb recovery media, life is good and you will need to take a look at the Symantek forum to see how to proceed with your encrypted drive.

  If it does not then, the problem is the BIOS on the system board.

  By pressing the ESC key and have the start menu appear is conditional on the BIOS being in good condition. Yours may be damaged. Try download a softpaq BIOS on another PC, extract the BIOS ROM file and put it on the root of a usb key. Put the USB key into a USB port on the laptop. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Windows key and start receiving the B key. If it works and you see an led flash, release the keys and wait. the process must load a BIOS file to replace the one damaged.   I'm sorry, but you cannot move the D: Partition recovery or its contents; It will not work if you do.

  Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

  Your D: Recovery Drive is should not be used for backups, defragmented, etc..
