    Hi TaurArian,

Followed by a few minutes: the HD was the reason for my problem. I noticed the constant term, but I thought that he's trying to solve the problem or it's indexing. In any case, when I reformatted it, she not answered for a while and then halfway on the installation of the OS crashed. After several attempts to install the OS, I have concluded that it is a failure of the HD.

A user who contacted Ms. received these instructions which seemed to work for him:

1 log on to the computer in SafeMode as administrator (you might be able to do it without being in safe mode).
2 rename the directory called C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution Directory Windows
3 Rename the CATROOT2 folder in windows > System32 directory
4 restart and try the Windows Update.

It's my opinion that the automatic update service should be stopped before the above, then restarted when finished.

To stop the automatic update service-

    Click Start, choose run.
In the run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the automatic updates service.
    Click on stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Don't forget to start the service automatic updates when you are finished
    Click Start. Choose run.

In most situations where the automatic updates and the system restore does not work, the usual causes are installed antivirus\security suite or malware.

run a CHKDSK followed by a defrag after anti-malware analysis good or two.

I recommend to download and install MalwareBytes' anti-malware (MBAM) and SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS).

    Error number: 0x800A0046

  • Windows Update does not not IE8/XP error 0X800A0046

After cleaning my computer from various virus infections and to try a bunch of bugs Windows update no longer works.  I get error 0x800A0046 and have tried every solution I can find on the net including http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883821 all to nothing makes someone an idea there?

The four methods suggested in KB 883821 have following results:

Method 1. Local groups and users does not exist under Computer Management (maybe it's because it's XP home no Pro)
Method 2: I had success whenever I tried.  Under each user in turn and tries to be updated between each.  No joy.
Method 3.  There is no secpol.msc on this computer (maybe same reason than method 1)
Method 4: RPC Properties window is grayed out but Log on / the Local System account is checked

    Any help is welcome

Thanks for your follow-up. You're welcome and thanks for your comments, too.

  • Windows Update does not... (error 0x800A0046)

original title: Windows update does not...

Windows Update will not work... asked me to define my security settings for IE (userdata persistence) that has actually been the correct way. I even tried the www.update.microsoft.com movement in a trusted location. I keep getting error (0x800A0046) even with the persistence of data user defined correctly and this field set to always allow cookies. Any ideas?

It's on Windows XP sp3, IE 8. I have some problems with Visual Studio 2008 and just uninstalled/reinstalled this weekend and noticed this problem when I went to look for updates after a fresh install.

I did have previous problems with updates on this machine.

  • 0x800A0046 error when you try to install the updates

    From: RCTaubert

I just did a clean install of Vista Ultimate.  After downloading all the Vista updates, using Windows Update.  More updates installed for a few failed. I reinstalled Office Pro 2007.  I tried to install "Microsoft Update so I can get the Vista & Office updates on a single screen.

From the "Windows Update" screen, I clicked on 'Get updates for more products'.  Which takes me to '

http://www.update.Microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-us '.  I except the "terms of use" and click on "install".  I click on UAC to continue and immediately meet with the error message and the next failure: Microsoft Update could not be installed on your computer

Make sure that you log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group, and then try again.
