Nearly six years ago, I bought a MacBook 7.1. The operating system is Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10 K 549).
I noticed in the last few months he began to run quite slowly. Web pages will take much longer time to load, and switch between different programs on the MacBook can be desperately slow. This beach ball was appears much more frequently and recently that I've known a few kernel panics, never having had one before.
I understand that my MacBook is old, but what I can do to help speed it up? I don't want it to become unusable, but I fear that that is the position in this way.

WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB not mounting end 2009 Macbook running Yosemite
I have a MacBook 2009 end I want to back up. I already have two former WD and Seagate external hard drives that work fine. However, I just bought WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB in February 2016 and it will not be mounted more than 15 seconds. It's the third external hard drive that I tried last year and I just get so frustrated that I have to return them. But I really need to back up my files!

WD made great bare records, but their cases are often hostile Mac regardless of the hype on the box. Please see my comments in this thread:

The other poster was trying to retrieve items on the disk, so a delete/reformat was not an option for him. However, WD boxes are often better if they are are erased and reformatted for Mac. WD has an odd of industrial property on the reader that they stick in their enclosure which can cause formatting problems. Their speakers are often working very well after reformatting the drive inside.
After struggling with a number of external hard drives 'brand', I now use only those that are sold by Other World Computing:

They may cost more that those who will be on sale every weekend in the supermarkets of office, but, when I wonder what's worth my data, the cost of the OWC speakers seems quite affordable. We have them on every Mac we have and none have shown bad behavior.

I used to work only on PC, but now I have this 2009 macbook Pro. He had a record of 7200 RPM... but he died... I want to put a hybrid SSHD on it... will it run slower?
Several years ago I tested both a hybrid version Seagate 1 and later version 2 with my 13 "2009 MBP and the computer started more quickly with one of these drives with 7200 RPM drive. But that and save files were the only time where I saw an improvement of high speed. So no, not slower, but not really all that much faster. I ended up installing an SSD in the computer. Now that was an improvement.

Do a 'genius' one appointment at an Apple Store, or select another authorized service provider. You may need to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up the data on the internal disks before you turn on your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that is not fully functional - ask if you need advice.
If privacy is a concern, delete the partitions of data with the ability to write zeros * (do it only if you have at least two backups complete, independent, and you know how to restore on a blank disc from any one of them.) Do not delete the recovery partition, if it is present.

Apple recommends that you remove permission to a device in the iTunes store before serving.

Messages on MacBook running super slow app.
I've never had a problem with the SMS from the messages app on my macbook (running on el Capitan). However, recently, everything I do in the application started trolling (search, type a message, open the preferences), and I get the roulette. It only lasts a few seconds, but it is very frustrating. I'll be typing a message, see my message to stop while I'm typing again, then roulette appears. After a few seconds, everything I typed so frozen that suddenly appears. Any suggestions? I cleaned my system, I've removed large files of various message flow, I signed out and signed in and restarted the computer. Continues to accuse...

running slow mac - cleanmymac and/or new battery?
My macbook (13-inch late 2009 model) works well, but is running slow. I am considering buying Cleanmymac 3 - but it made a difference? I used the demo version that has identified about 110 GB, which could be authorised only if I got the full Cleanmymac3. I have to add... the battery did 470 cycles! Would it better to replace the battery or get Cleanmymac performance? I'm not very irritable so don't really understand the impact of one. Ideally I get a new mac but will try and keep this one spends more time if possible! Thank you

my 27 Imac late 2009 became very slow
My 27 Imac late 2009 became very slow - I think especially after I've upgraded to El Capitan. Otherwise, everything in the computer works perfectly and I m using only 200 I have the 1 TB. Onyx and other tests can't find anything wrong. I mainly use my computer for word documents and to manage his photos about 30 000. The internal memory is 2 x 2 GB. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to speed it up? Thank you.
I wish I had an answer, but all I can do is rather echo to your problem. I have a 19 mid-2007 "iMac, contributed to the maximum with the RAM, 1 t disc hard less that half full, who did the same thing - he has worked with El Capitan until I updated to the latest version. Once that has happened the machine became so slow as to be unusable. It would take ten or twelve minutes to record a mouse click. When I restarted the machine, it took 32 HOURS to start (Fortunately it isn't my main Mac production).
Last week, I tried all the remedies of common sense - by removing unused software, keeping an eye on the activity monitor (there is nothing fancy here), etc. Finally, I did all the stuff start, PRAM, run utilities disk (no noted problem) and even tried to reinstall El Capitan to a bootable USB I did with my first Mac, the reinstall, but seemed not 'take' somehow - he wanted to repeat the installation procedure again and again.
I use the little Mac for Internet, e-mail and (as Karlis2) deal with some of the oldest pictures in my files - I'm sure that I have pictures on Time Machine, so I'm not too worried about it, but this was the first Mac way back in the day, I bought with my money and I'm a little sentimental on and would like to resurrect if possible... I wonder if there is a way to restore the operating system to an earlier version and it would make a difference?

Hi, I'm using a 2009 MacBook Pro (2.53 Ghz 4 GB ram) and I'm really confused... I signed up for the beta program, but, according to allmac.com, El Capitan is the latest version of the operating system is running on this computer... since I was forced to run El Capitan (iOS 9 requires iTunes 12), it takes computer long, opening of the finder windows... which would perform better (I'm hoping to get a new one in the next 18 months)?
"Beta" means test the next OS, which is Sierra.

Avoid using third-party software that claims to clean your computer. This software does more harm than good. In addition, you don't need it. Note that all computers become slower over time even in the normal conditions of use. Generally, the experienced users erasing the hard drive and do a clean install from scratch at least once a year or every time that the installation of a major upgrade of the OS. Can I pass a 2009 MacBook Pro safely to El captain?
You can upgrade to El Capitan, but make sure first that you have a backup so that you can restore your system, if you find El Capitan too troublesome.
Most of the problems with the El Capitan upgrades have to do with incompatible software. Get rid of any Mac cleaners, boosters, antivirus software and so on. Check all your applications and delete that you rarely use.
You can find el Capitan is slow compared to your current configuration. You could improve performance El Cap by upgrade your hard drive to a disc solid state drive (SSD). You can now find a very reasonable price.

MacBook Pro slow since El Capitan upgrade
Hello - My machine is several seconds or laggy since update to El Capitan. I have done first aid in the new disk utility and restarted several times with a few improvements, but things are still running slower than on Yosemite. Any ideas? Here is my EtreCheck:

Thought that it reads 'normal', in 1487 cycles a battery is warranted. Stacks of old, used often expand and can damage a MBP.

MacBook Pro slow and stop, memory or HARD drive or motherboard?
These last few months my Macbook Pro medio 2012 begins to slow down. I was thinking of a resettlement but has not had the time yet.
Last month, he really slow started to freeze and stops instantly. It reboots and then I get a gray screen saying with the icon (a card with a questionmark in there) that it cannot find the boot disk drive. I close it again with the button and restart, then it starts normally. This would have me believe it has something to do with my HARD drive or the motherboard, but then again I'm not a tech guy so I guess just really. Then I got the idea to do a test of material, with this error as a result: 4MEM/62/40000000: 0x81d97590
After searching the Web, it would mean that my memory would be bad/broken. I read in another post to download an app called 'Remember' which tests your RAM. I tried yesterday and it worked fine, nothing was wrong. But today I did once again when my Macbook was slow functioning again and went to do some other stuff. When I came back my Macbook has a black screen, a Word to insert a boot disk. I just stopped and restarted again and started normally. It is a little slow to clear grey screen with the apple logo.
So my question is, does anyone know where the shoe pinches, RAM, HARD drive or the motherboard? Will also contribute to a reinstall? Can I check if my RAM is always placed properly or is maybe dirty? I use an application called memory monitor for clean working memory from time to time. I'm updating to El captain, wanted to do it instantly when I want to do a clean install on my mac, but I think I'll wait with that I know where the problem lies.

This is not the right way to think about memory problems. When the test of the RAM ALL said that there is a problem, it's the truth. RAM problems are very difficult to isolate, and a diagnostic runs, but can't find the problem, if NOT "nothing was wrong" which is "he cannot find the problem immediately."
This isn't a mystery. DIMM RAM, not another thing is more likely to fail. Then you could try Rember running all night, you could try to remove one of your DIMMs and see if chess stops, you can try to get a new DIMM and see if they work better.
