  I'm new to the SAN thing and hope someone can enlighten us.

  I'm playing between the use of drives of 1 TB SAS or SATA 1 TB for my new DELL MD3000i SAN. Both drives work on 7.2 K rpm. It will be connected to the ESX and run "normal" virtual machines such as files and print Windows, Exchange, SQL, Linux, etc. Nothing very heavy.

  A. you have any input on how the performance, reliability, etc. would be like between these two types of drives - SAS 7.2 K vs 7.2 K SATA?

  (B) with 14 x 1 TB 7.2 K drives, should I run RAID5 or RAID10 to maximize performance? IIRC, 14 disks in a RAID5 configuration will have a rate of 14 pins, while 14 disks in RAID10 will throughout the 7 pins. Capacity is not a problem right now.

  (C) on a note related, how about 14 x 450 GB SAS 15 K disks? Their execution in RAID10 is a complete overkill? Or RAID5 would be the sweet spot since the disks are already 15 K RPM?

  My understanding is that the SAS drive interfaced will be 10-15% faster for the random i/o, even if speed control 7.2 k is the same. It is the ability of the difference between the fairly simple, integrated SATA on the drive controller and the SAS controller with double vent more advanced. So, all things being equal elsewhere the SAS interfaced by car will be a better choice for general use. For purposes of archiving, for example, there would be little difference. Pointing to the MTBF numbers are similar, readers are probably the same as their controller.

  What levels of raid are in my opinion is one of the determinants for raid 10 is the problems that can occur with a raid 5 is the rebuild time and performance hit.

  I have a Power Edge 2900 with two hard drives SAS to 128 GB in RAID 1 for operating system and seven 450 GB SAS hard drives in a Raid5 for VM configuration.

  Size of disk of my RAID controller is listed at about 2.45 to thanks to the installation of the RAID controller firmware.   When installing ESX, available on the 2nd table disk size is listed as only 2 terabytes.

  Any ideas as to why I am only able to see 2 TB worth of disk space whereas it should be about 2.5 TB?

  ESX 3.5 has 2 TB LUN limit. You can divide the table into smaller LUN and format as VMFS and then add others as stretches. This will allow you to have a store of data VMFS of the size of your total storage space. There are disadvantages to using extends i.e. a LUN fails and the entire data store fails.

  No, you cannot simply add the hard drive from the shelf in a judgment.  The EQL table requires only the readers of Dell.  They have firmware on them.   Also, you need to match the rpm speed as well. You cannot mix speeds in the same Member.

• Errors SCSI sense in Event Viewer

  Once an hour, I get a handful of warning message in my event viewer.  They are all the same except change that denotes a different physical disk (7-14).  There is a mix of SATA and SAS in a MD1000.  The SATA drives did not produce the error.  A so-called failure last week SAS drive after having been online for only 1 week.  All green lights on the MD1000 and OMSA shows everything is normal, but I get the warnings in the event log.  Can someone explain what the error or the CDB is the cause?  Should I worry about this?  This is causing readers to fail?

• OpenManage 7.4.0 do not pick up disk failure or removal until you restart

  I've been rebuild a Dell T310 customers with new 4 x 450 GB SAS Raid 10, using his H200 raid card and that you have installed Windows HyperV 2012R2.

  All software packages, drivers, and software have been installed and updated, and I began to test my OMSA DellAlert.ps1 script for notification by e-mail.

  I decided to get one of the 4 drives to test the notification, but OMSA has not detected any withdrawal from disk! Very disturbing! I left that he unplugged for 9 hours and always OMSA showed 4 discs online. Even refreshing the OMSA browser, or closing and reopening the browser has not changed anything. Only when I reboot the server it then shows a disc had been removed and my script notified E-mail me this.

  I pushed the disc in and again 3 hours later OMSA has yet to show that nothing has changed. Discs 3 and 4 activity watch as they rebuild but if OMSA is not displayed any changes how I'm destined to receive alerts to show when a disk has failed and raid has deteriorated.

  I can't put this server back in my client until this issue is resolved. Has anyone seen or had this problem before? Any help would be grateful. I guess my next step will be decommissioning OMSA and firmware etc or reconstitution with 2012 HyperV server test.

  Update 1 - if I stop and restart the Server Administrator service and DSM SA Data Manager then the notification comes through and loggin in the OMSA shows the missing disk.
  The LCD on the server changes to orange as soon as the disk is pulled so the underlying hardware seems to work ok, it just seems to be the OMSA 7.4.0 2012R2 HyperV software.

  Update 2 - I've upgraded OMSA to 7.4.0.1 and nothing has changed. I noticed that the show OMSA Embedded System Management (ESM) logs MAKE a disk has been deleted or inserted, but the section alerts and all other areas of the OMSA show no changes until the services are restarted or rebooted Server!

  Fix possible update 3 - I reinstalled a copy eval 2012R2 with a graphical interface to see if that fixed it but it was always the same questions. My only solution seems to be 7.4.0 uninstall and install OMSA 7.3.0. I now put my HyperV 2012R2 system on and confirm that the 7.3.0 works as well for her.

  Our engineering has checked this issue. 7.4 OMSA does not properly report status on the H200 and SAS 6/ir changes. This affects programs such as OpenManage Essentials and OpenManage for VMware Vcenter integration using OMSA to monitor servers.

  A fix is planned with OMSA 7.4.0.2

• New hardware configuration of ESXi environment

  I'm relatively new to a company (to a month ago and I am the only person in what the other person until I started has left a little more) and I was tasked to virtualize ~ 30 physical servers (mainly old systems Solaris 10 which I do not expect to migrate to CentOS VMs).

• Configuration RAID, pins or partitions?

  We are about to install a new set of disks. 12 x 450 GB SAS drives. We already have a tray that has 12 disks in and is currently split with 6 disks in RAID 10 and 5 RAID 5 with a hot spare.

  Looks like I have 2 options during the installation of the new status bar

  1 rebuild the two trays. Have 1 tray with RAID10, so using all 12 drives in a configuration of RAID 10 giving me 6-pin can be used. The 2nd tray will be 11 disks in RAID 5, giving me 10 usable pins. I'll use a global hot spare.

  2 - having 2 LUNS per tray. Each tray would have 1 LUN RAID 10 using 6-disc so have used 3-axis and 1 unit logic RAID 5 with 5 discs number so have 4 pins that can be used.

  Whether or not to have pins or more partitions MON (at the level of storage). Several axes implies a higher throughput, but more partitions less pretension.

  If you don't want to reconfigure the existing tray, I suggest that you configure the new Tablet as RAID 10 (all disks) and present it in two volumes (or several) to the ESX host. Rather than concatenating all volumes in a large data store, I actually go with several datatores and distribute the VM on data warehouses.

  I just put an ESX (vSphere) installation using the following text:

  3 x DL380G6

  MSA2212fc (with 9 x 450 GB SAS 15 k disks)

  RAID 5 on the MSA, with a hot spare.

  Double (4 GB) CF cards in all 3 of DL380 going to two Brocade 300 switches.

  I created a virtual disk on the MSA and correspond to the disks to the host.

  The maximum size of the VMFS LUNS without extensions is 512 b 2 TB... So divide your storage a little space...
