5.5 standard vSphere spend LACP

I wonder if anyone can help

I have a new HP-1910 48port gigabit switch.  at my host, I have 8 physical network interface cards.  I want to enable LACP on the switch to help speed up my network.  I did the google habit and all I can find is distributed switches.  is it possible to activate on a standard switch.  I already configured in IP Hash.  I noticed when I set up the ping thinking was very intermittent.  If I ping 2 guests one would ping and the other wouldn't.  and vice versa.

Thanks for any help

I create two vSwitches, 4 network cards of each and medical examinations to connect to different switches to prevent a failure of the switch and just use the value default standard vswitch network grouping road based on the original port code - and distribute your traffic load IO servers based.  As I have said, do not complicate your design, keep things simple.  You have a small environment.

  • After an edition upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard, vSphere cannot communicate with the VIM_VCDB database

My vCenter environment is 5.0 and has been initially implemented using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express as the database.  We have reached the limit of size of 10 GB for the Express version, so I want to upgrade the database 2008 R2 express 2008 R2 standard.

Before the upgrade, I stopped the vCenter Server service before you start the SQL Server Setup program.  I did an "Upgrade Edition", to consider express standard.  It ends successfully with 2 minutes, and then I went and restarted the server vCenter service.

However, after restarting the service, vSphere is unable to communicate with the VIM_VCDB.  For example, in vSphere if I click a virtual machine and click the performance tab, it tells me that it's impossible to view the web page.  It seems to be unable to communicate with the VIM_VCDB.  I have not changed all database names, or the ODBC settings, so not sure what is causing the problem.

If I go to ODBC data sources administrator and test the Data Source, the test completes successfully.

I have read all the documentation I could find and tried a few different things, but not found something that solves this problem.  I ended up having to go back to the snapshot backup, I took before the upgrade of the database edition.

Anyone have any ideas on what the issue might be, or what should I do to solve it?

    The database is probably fine.

  • Isolate the port on a vSphere standard switch traffic

    Hello

I deploy an environment where I have a pool of 100 virtual machines that live on a switch standard vSphere isolated. The virtual machines to communicate with the rest of the world through a virtual double-NIC machine. This configuration does not work as expected, but I would go a little further and to isolate the connectivity network, such as each virtual machine can communicate with the system of double-NIC and not each other. The switch standard vSphere, the pool of 100 virtual machines are all located on the same VLAN and group ports. I spent some research time through documentation, but I did find a clean way to implement what I want. The best I can get to each of the virtual machines 100 puts their own VIRTUAL LAN, but it is ugly and will be difficult to maintain. Is there something easier that I missed?

    Thank you

    Steve

PVLAN, but you will need the distributed virtual switch.

  • vSphere Licensing

I am a student doing a project where I need to develop a virtual infrastructure. I chose VMware since I am more familiar with their products.

The project includes two sites and a total of 15 people. In the beginning, I chose the vSphere Essentials Plus kit. I have 2 servers on the main site and 1 to the other site. I was going to buy an additional vCenter of license and 2 licenses SRM server. Basically, with the configuration of the infrastructure with the ability to replication on the other site and raise all reviews virtual machines on the server in the other site as a form of DR. The more research I do, the more I see how it is not extensible in the future. I also wonder if it is still possible given the licensing restrictions.

I did research on vSphere standard edition because I believe that it is probably a better option. I have a few questions about how the licenses work as this edition has more factors involved.

From my research, this is what I have gathered.

vSphere Standard edition with basic support is $1715.72 - is that physical price by UC?

I would also like, more than one instance of vCenter (1 for each site). Do I need to purchase a license additional vCenter, or y at - it a pack containing 2 licenses?

In addition, in order to have the capacity to DR, would need RS. Do I need 2 licenses of MRS?

Is anyway to get the price for all this? I was not able to find the price of the additional licenses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Hi Welcome to the communities,

you need a single vSphere Standard/ORL/Ent + per socket/physical CPU license, Yes.

About MRS. you should take a look at vSphere replication. It is included in all standard vSphere licenses and of better quality. Perhaps it meets your needs, as a SRM license for up to 75 VMs would cost about $7000, I think.

As you said you are a student, you're doing this project for a University? You may get lower prices then.

I would contact the commercial service of VMware for the best info:

Can I buy two Standard vSphere licenses and a vSphere Essentials Kit License HA and vMotion? The price including 1 year support package would be $3 430 instead of the vSphere Essentials Plus of a package (for 3 machines) to $4 369

If this is not the case, what makes different product versions? Is it possible for vMotion/HA for only two guests at a lower price?

The answer is no, vSphere Essentials only can be used with the host Essentials license license and may not be used with another license.

The second answer is Yes, use the essential package more vSphere. It includes VMotion and HA.

  • Put a host in maintenance - it will automatically move virtual machines?

    Dear all,

We have a cluster with 4 guests and we would now like to upgrade each 5.50 to 6.0 ESXi ESXi host. I understand that we need to put the host in maintenance mode. He will automatically move virtual machines to other hosts? I read DRS is necessary. I see that our guests are permitted for Vmotion and HA. We have standard Vsphere license.

This means in our case, I would need to move manually first of all VMs before the host can go into maintenance mode? In the case where the Vsphere will make work, the virtual machines automatically distributing to 3 other hosts according to the resources available?

    Thank you

    Edy

This means in our case, I would need to move manually first of all VMs before the host can go into maintenance mode?

Yes, since the Standard edition doesn't include DRS, you must manually move virtual machines to other hosts.

In the case where the Vsphere will make work, the virtual machines automatically distributing to 3 other hosts according to the resources available?

Yes, this would be the case with the DRS in place.

  • Cannot save the Management Pack Configuration in VROPS

    Hello

We started to experience a strange problem with our new VROPS 6.1 deployment when you try to configure certain management packs.

We have 3 VrOPs devices deployed, Master, Master Replica and collector remote monitoring 3 standard vSphere (2 vRealize and a NSX) deployed using VMware cluster more practices and are working well. We had some problems with our vSAN where we lost a large amount of data because of a corrupted data store which meant losing our vCenter cluster Resource and Management 2 devices. Our vROPS / /vRA of the PSC devices / instances were fine as they were running on other storage. We had to re-bulid our vCenter but now have everything back running as expected.

However... We started to add the vRA and SCOM management packs in vROPS which works well and sets up very well... but then something strange happening after about 5 minutes of data collection... the Configuration of each of the vRA and adapters SCOM disappears... And data collection stops. For more visit, it seems that someone has gone and remove the configuration of the adapter, but this isn't the case, because no one else has access to this environment.

In any case, now when we try to re - configure an instance / configuration of an adapter we can not save the configuration of the card after we successfully test the connection we get this strange message that I have attached a screenshot in this post.

    The message reads the following:

    1. Unable to create the resource to HAVE it. Resource with the same key already exists.

We have tried to remove the packs management, PAK re - install and replace the existing, but it does not work we always get the same error when trying to save.

We are not now able to save the configuration of the vRA or SCOM adapters... and I'm a bit puzzled. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello

I had similar problem. Which user are you logged as? There is a problem with the user rights and management packs. Only the local administrator users must be used, try to connect to this account and see if your configuration is not there already (such as msg of error States).

  • Drivers Intel P3700 for VSANS?

I worked with our VMWare team to design a VSAN out and it included some Intel P3700 PCIe cards like the layer flash supported by about 1.2 TB of Seagate sas disks 10 k for storage.  Unfortunately, even of the P3700 disappeared not on the HCL, and I am currently "chasing my tail" with latency, and i/o pending.  I opened a SR, but recommended for the H730 drivers do not seem to do anything.  And I'm fairly certain that's not the issue (deactivation does not seem to be a problem).  I understand that the P3700 didn't HCL yet, but it is still ongoing and so many white papers were written with this card as part of the architecture.

    It's all running VMWare 6. 0 b (VMware ESXi 6.0.0 build 2494585 on hosts)

    Material:

    -From r630 Dell (30)

    -2 x Intel P3700 400 GB Flash cards (driver intel-nvme - 1.0e.1.1 - 1OEM.550.0.0.1391871.x86_64.vib)

    -10 x 1.2 TB SAS of Seagate 10 k disks

-H730 Dell RAID controller in HBA mode with cache is disabled, etc. (drivers for this were something to worry about, but since I assume that the first writings go directly to PCIe cards, I don't think that's the question long - firmware 25.3.0.0016 pilot 6.606.12.00)

    -Intel X 710 with DAC 2 x 10 Gb connections

    -4 x Juniper QFX5100 10 GB switches (15 r630 by 2 switches, scaling up to 30 servers in 2 past later)

SAN traffic exceeds 2 uplink (with uplink 1 standby), everything else is plus 1 uplink (with uplink 2 as before)-working on a plan to spend LACP, but it is still under construction

The current workload is very low.  It is only about 6 Production VM running on that cluster to the repositories of the project and kicking the tires, with the idea that 500-1000 VM will be launched upward in the coming months.  For the majority of virtual machines, the performance is not essential, but some of the problems I see currently are a bit a showstopper.

    Problems:

If I run "bonnie ++ u root" on a virtual machine single, I can see the latency time to go up to 65, 000ms (Yes, really 65 k ms) and the virtual machine is basically responding (100% iowait and very rarely is able to write i/o because of the huge latency).  The write buffer is never very full during this period (stuck at 30% and deactivation does not start even during the race.)  Similar issues occur ATTO Disk Benchmark running on a windows system with a disk queue high (4 seems to be well, 10 kills of the VM)

I can get very high write speeds (500 - 800 MB/s or more), but as soon as the latency time leapt to a few 100 ms, it's all downhill.

Even with a fairly simple recording VM with all our guests directed to these, I get occasional spikes of latency (1400ms +, with an average of 15ms, which seems high even).  This box just works a lot of entries to logstash and a hint of elasticsearch with occasional when bed kibana someone shows something.

Y at - it no rider special I read somewhere for the P3700 Intel?  Another thing that I really should look into?  I'm tired of chasing my tail and want to start the actual load of the migration to this new cluster.  I tried RAID0 on a small cluster of 4 boxes, but that wasn't much better and is much more boring.

I use the 1.6 and 2.0 TB P3700 cards in my VSAN without problem. I have a similar setup, except using r730xd, the same with the same firmware + drivers raid card, also on 6. 0b. When I originally put in place, I could see peaks of latency high 200-400 + ms, it was resolved by updating the drivers of NETWORK card for me. I use a NIC (Intel X 540 - AT2), different, but the firmware upgrade + the driver for my NIC brings my latency ~ 3ms avg and blip occasional peak at ~ 15ms. Probably worth to update any firmware on your X 710 and use the appropriate driver on VMWare HCL VMware Compatibility Guide: search for i/o device

I've also seen really bad latency problems out of network configuration problem. In our case that we had a link to 1 GB failover in case our 10 GB failed, but instead things are started to be load-balanced and performance/latency was very poor until we noticed that the 1 GB has been fully utilized.

Also try to use the Inbox NVME driver, I ran on it without problem before Intel released the driver 1.1 you use now. In my limited testing, Intel drivers are slightly faster performance but nothing majorly different.

  • Best configuration/license esxi 5

I'm new to Vmware and I have to deal with 6 guests in my environment. Currently, the hosts are set up with the esxi license 5.0 free stand alone.  I have no shared storage and I wonder what would be the best configuration/license to manage these hosts without shared storage.  Thank you

To use vMotion without shared storage, you must run vSphere 5.1 or newer with at least 'Essentials Plus' licenses. Remember that the Kits Essentials can manage up to 3 guests, so if you want to manage all six guests in a unique environment you need at least the Standard vSphere licenses.

    Support for VMware vCenter Lab Manager 4.0 for 1 processor + Platinum (24 x 7) 3 years

    $2 448,70

Y at - it no limitation as the amount of the virtual machine, we can create, or the amount of the host, we can use with Lab Manager?

    Thanks in advance.

For the portion of the price, the best if you call the seller serve you on VMware (partner or VMware).

1 Lab Manager license can only be used in 1 (physical CPU, not the carrots) take of the ESX host. So, if your ESX 4 CPU (say 4 CPUS, total 16 cores), need you 4 license of LM.

The license does not limit the number of VM.

  • vSphere 5 and iSCSI LACP

Hello - this is my first post here so please, be gentle.

I tried to find information about configuring LACP in vSphere, ESXi 5. Let me give a brief overview of my environment and the objectives that we strive to achieve. We use NICs 1 GB on 6710 VDX Brocade fabric switches.

We have a small cluster of vSphere, ESXi 5 standard edition. We have 6 physical network interface cards in each host - 2 are associated to the network of the VM, 2 are associated for vMotion/management, and the last two are vmKernal ports one two separate subnets connected using MPIO to our Compellent SAN iSCSI. This has been our test bench and we use the nic teaming in ESXi 5 running "Route based on the originating virtual port ID" with no specific switch-side config. We have other servers only using LACP 802.3ad configured on the host and the switch that work very well - gives us a better failure protection that we use two switches and plug in a link in each switch. We would like to do the same with ESXi hosts.

Our new project is coming to virtualize a larger number of systems we currently serve. We want to do is expand our use VM to include a large (30 - big for us) number of SQL servers. The basic functions of these systems require a decent amount of e/s SAN backend. The physical servers we would be virtualize emballerions a density close to 4 / 1 or up to 8:1 with this conversion. We are concerned that having just the 2 iSCSI nic MPIO paths will not be sufficient to support the increased load of I/O.

We would like to know if you are using LACP on the two subnet iSCSI connections and join 2 + NIC for each connection is viable in ESXi 5 and with iSCSI technology and what configuration parameters that we set up to do this.

In addition, this project would be to use Enterprise Edition VMWare vSphere 5 - DRS or distributed switching introduced other complications or benfits for this configuration?

Thanks for any helpful input or direction of already published documents.

    Scott

I find using LACP / etherchannel is rarely effective or useful in VMware environments.

For iSCSI storage, my standard configuration is to use 2 uplinks with binding of iSCSI ports. Here are the screenshots of the configuration.

  • vSphere 6.0 license Standard downgrade then upgrade

    Hi guys,.

Just a quick I'm not quite clear on if possible.

Basically, I have two hosts of ESXi, an old box of 5.5 running on vSphere essentials license and a new box of 6.0 running with the standard license for vSphere.  The new server is not yet in production, and is associated with a San (current storage on the 5.5 server is local)

We have a 4 CPU license for vSphere 6.0 standard, so what I was hoping to do was downgrade 2 CPU of this license to 5.5 and apply it on the 5.5 server, this will enable vMotion and let me live migrate servers of local storage for the new San and across to the new host.  I then tried to shut down the old Server 5.5, rebuild fresh with ESXi 6.0 and then upgrade the number of processors 2 license 6.0 who have been downgraded, back to 6.0.

Is it possible to do so without incurring a cost?  I see that a downgrade is possible for free, but I'm not 100% clear on the component to upgrade.  Basically, I wanted to do it this way to avoid blackouts, but if it comes to it, then I can plan a failure, just try to scope out right now.

    Thank you.

I was wrong. I just checked and you can select 'Upgrade quantity'. I learned something new today.

From the point of view upgrade/downgrade you can make it back as long as you have a valid support contract.

  • Uppgrade free vSphere to vSphere Standard

    Hello

So uppgrade vSphere vSphere license open source to vSphere standard, do I need to enter the new license key only or there is not another?

Any KB for this positve step?

Simply enter the license key to unlock new features. There is no need to re - install the ESXi host or install anything else.

But be aware that as a sine qua non to use many features you must have a vCenter Server.
