640 proBook G1: Activation of Windows 10 with a new installation

Hello

We received a new batch of HP Probook 640 G1 with 8.1 installed and the company decided that they prefer to have systems to update to Windows 10.

We tried two different methods to do this, whenever we get 10 installed Windows activation is rejected because installation does not have a product key installed.  We know that the product key is stored in the BIOS, but we are not able to determine which is the key.  It is also our understanding that Windows should have been able to detect the product key.

Any suggestions on where we can get the product key in the BIOS or a method to have Windows see the correct key in the BIOS.

Also, I saw a suggestion for a tool called Belarc Advisor when we run this it shows (key: not activated) for the product key.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the replies.

It is with Windows, having satisfied Microsoft they provided a different installation media and everything works fine.

Construction, we started with was of 331 and they gave us 953.  Not sure why our distribution did not have the latest media available.

  • Installed new HARD drive with the new installation of XP, old HDD ShowAs saw as the active partition, how to change this?

    I installed a new HARD drive with a new installation of Windows XP Edition family. I want to keep the old HDD and reformat the drive, but I can't because the second HDD is listed as active in the management of the computer. Why? It's not the drive that contains the operating system (Windows XP) that is initialized from.  I put the BIOS such that the new HARD drive is the boot drive. The old HDD has Windows XP on it, but isn't the startup disk. I just don't understand.
    If only the new HARD drive is installed, the computer management doesn't show that it or any other of its partitions are the active partition (C drive is listed as the system partition, of course).

    How can I get an active partition and no active partition when the new HARD drive is installed on a HARD drive that is not the boot drive, when I have two hard drives installed?

    In case it is necessary, the new HARD drive is a SATA and the old HARD drive is IDE with the cavaliers as a slave.

    The system partition is the Active partition. The system volume contains the system files needed to start Windows, Windows XP, these system files are:

    NTLDR
    Boot.ini
    NTDETECT.COM
    Ntbootdd.sys (present/used only with older SCSI controllers)

    Windows files are not necessarily on the system volume, they can reside on another volume, when on a different volume this volume holding Windows files is called the boot volume.

    When you install Windows on a computer, playing a mixture of IDE and SATA setup discs tends to favor with IDE drives on SATA drives and tends to use the IDE drive to house the system partition, (even if Windows is installed on a different drive).

    Running the command SYSTEM SET at a command prompt may shed some light on the problem...

  • Fixed a crash issue repeated with a new installation of Firefox on Windows 8.1 28

    It is not so much a question as a contribution to the solution.

    On a new computer running Windows 8.1 a new installation of Firefox 28 has been repeatedly crash or freeze ("no response"). Loading pages can be slow and scrolling in staircase. Totally unusable, especially after playing content with Shockwave.

    Although I had not installed the plug-ins outside Shockwave and Adobe Acrobat, I have had a look and was surprised to see that I had never asked. I disabled those I don't think I need:
    Intel's Identity Protection technology
    Photo Gallery
    WildTangent Games App alarm presence V2.

    Since these disabling Firefox works well. But I was forced to use another browser for a week until you find the time to research the problem.

    Why are these called not - for and of course (at least one) annoying plugins installed by default? It does not have any good Firefox!

    Plugins are not included in the Firefox download, because Mozilla is not allowed to distribute. Firefox automatically detects the plugins on your system through a number of methods, so it was a good idea to revisit and disable those you don't need. I have really no idea whence the special ones.

    You understand that you will not be able to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7?  He will have to do a clean install.

    The Council supports Windows 7, you can get the drivers here (the chipset drivers should be the first drivers you install after installing the operating system.)

    never had a disc of windows vista with the new laptop and no option to make a recovery disk, and I need to format my laptop to factory / clean, help!

    How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.

    There is no Vista free download legal available.

    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

    They will tell you how to do this.

    Every computer manufacturer has their way of doing recovery disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.
    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu
    All in one, type printers (print, copy, scan) usually have a very specific set of instructions during the installation.  If not followed exactly the probability is that the scanner will not work.
    Canon: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer
    Download and read the Setup instructions for your model, have you followed the instructions exactly, more precisely when to connect the printer / scanner during installation of the software process?
  • Activation of Windows XP in the new computer.
    -Old hard drive, the new Machine
    I have a hard drive with Windows XP.  The machine from Dell, in which it was loaded crashes - most likely a motherboard problem.  I installed the HDD on another machine that has had its hard drive failure - virus suspected, etc..  The combination of 'new' hard drive with Windows XP and the Dell with the card mother work seems to work.  I get the error that I have to reactivate Windows XP to connect.  I can't connect Internet (I have not discovered why in this case) and the result by telephone (voice) says that ID is not on file (?) and gives a Web site for activation.  I can't access the Web on the machine, and the Microsoft Web site with the "solution" has the answer in form of download - once again, not good because I can't access the Web with the machine in need of activation.  The phone translates a computer, not a person.  I changed nothing other than to remove the hard drive of a machine which does not to whoever's doing.  What can I do?  Thank you.
    The operating system of Windows XP which is not the operating system on which was installed when you purchased the Dell hard disk from Dell? If so, it's probably an OEM version and as such is "related" to the system BIOS, it came with. It will not activate connected to a system with a different motherboard and a different BIOS. In addition, if an OEM, software license version is no longer valid because it is no longer used with the material with which it was purchased.
    The reason why you can't get an Internet connection is bound. Since the XP system on the hard drive has been used in the Dell system, it is configured to be used in the Dell. There the drivers for the Dell hardware installed. You will need to identify the current computer's ethernet card, download and install the appropriate drivers for this card.
    It is a method for activation of the phone:
    How to activate Windows XP by phone:
    To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to programs, point to Accessories, point to system tools, and then click on activate Windows.
    Or,
    1. click on the Activation of Windows in the notification area icon.
    2. click on Yes, I want to telephone a representative of active windows customer service now.
    3. click read the Windows Product Activation privacy statement, click back, and then click Next.
    4. follow the steps to activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
    Good luck
  • Updated Windows and transfer to the new computer with a new installation
    Hi I have an office of aging that I plan on upgrading within 12-15 months. I am currently under W7 and want to upgrade to 8.1. When I finally buy my new material under a BONE, me will be possible to transfer 8.1 overall with a full installation and not an image copied from my current position?
    Thanks for the tips
    To clarify my last sentence: If you buy Windows 8.1 full and use it to upgrade your old machine (Win 7), later when you buy your new computer and install 8.1, you will need to remove the old computer (it can only be activated on a PC at the same time).  So if you were to sell your old computer, legally you have to withdraw Windows 8.1.
  • Installation of Windows 7 very smooth with the new installer
    Last night, I installed Windows 7 on my NB205. I used the "Toshiba for Windows 7 Installer", which is available for download from their support site. This utility download the drivers needed and patches and automatically installs. The installation was very good. I used my NB205 all morning and everything seems fine. Even the function keys are integrated with the Flash card utility.
    I have partitioned my drive and set up a dual boot so I can still use Windows XP with an old USB TV tuner, I have, when needed. (This happened very convenient when I had a power failure during an ice storm a few years ago. Unfortunately, my laptop battery only lasted for 2 hours at a time. With the NB205 I'll be able to handle a much longer blackout).
    And then you run this file to get the downloads?
  • Currently, PC has viruses that cannot be removed by Mcafee, Avast, etc.. Thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, with a new facility.
    A new installation of Windows 7, Home version will get rid of all viruses?
    If so, do I just trust antivirus Windows 7 or is there another anti-virus (Avast, McAfee, etc.) I can run at the same time which will take care of any future problems?
    There is no "Windows 7 antivirus."  Though is an installation of Windows 7 from XP (which requires a disc format) is almost certainly going to get rid of your current malware problem (there are some "boot sector" virus rare which can survive with a format), you can quickly end up in a similar situation unless you change which seems to be not not very safe computing habits.
    The application named "Windows Defender", which is built into Windows 7 is only an anti-spyware tool (also true of Windows Defender for XP and Vista).  You need an antivirus application as well.  Microsoft Security Essentials is the current Microsoft free antivirus app.  As I understand it, MSE is good enough, although I'd rather pay for ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
    Whatever you choose, only run a real-time antivirus application, although it is perfectly fine to perform periodic analyses to use another tool.  In addition, it is very important to keep your system up-to-date by setting Windows Update runs automatically.  You must keep your applications up to date as well, because the attacks thanks to various applications such as Adobe Acrobat are not unknown.
    You might be interested in reading of the 'response' of MVP Kosh Vorlon in this thread for about a year.
    BTW, System Restore is NOT designed to get rid of a malware infection, and probably will not.
  • Activation of Windows 7 after several failed installations
    The Win 7 Pro involved in this activation number was purchased new in 2011 and has been installed on the fairly old laptop from my wife at the time.  Here is how we have so many uses of the product activation code:
    * In October 2015, we decided it was time to replace his old laptop.  At Costco, we bought a Lenovo comes with Win 8 on it.  I replaced Win 8 with our copy of Win 7. - New activation 1
    * End of October, the laptop Lenovo had to be sent to Lenovo to fix faulty USB ports of the system.  When the system has been returned to us win 8 had been reinstalled.  Yet once I replaced it with our Win 7. - New activation 2
    * In November after reinstallation of Win. 7, the USB ports are still non-functional, so I sent it to Lenovo.  Yet once the system has been returned to us with Win 8 installed, and even once, I replaced it with our Win 7. - New 3 activation
    USB ports still did not work, so I took the system to ' FRY' store in San Marcos, CA, for them to fix it.  In the process, they wanted to borrow our victory. 7 CD, which I gave, and they used. - New activation 4
    * Fry said that electronics USB were damaged and could not be fixed, so I went back to Costco and then bought system from Amazon, a DELL system comes with Win. 10. I replaced Win. 10 with our Win 7. - New activation 5
    * Believe it or not, ports USB of the DELL printer didn't work, then Amazon is replaced with a new DELL (with Win. 10).  This time, before doing anything either, I tested the USB ports and believe it or not, they WORKED!  Then, I once more, installed and activated our victory. 7 - new activation 6
    This system - the new DELL with our old Win. 7 is installed, worked great.
    We do not believe that it is possible to "invent" a story like the true story above!  If he must show "stupidity" above, I can provide documentation that supports the story.
    Please put our activation 2 - one for the initial installation in 2011 and the other for installation on the DELL laptop I'm using to type this message for you.
    Thank you and God bless.
    Your Windows 7 Genuine Advantage Kit does not include the rights to transfer to another computer. It is supposed to be used on the computer where there is a non-genuine license.
    If you need a new license for the computer that you create, then you must purchase a license of version full:
    Where can I still get Windows 7?
