  I have a HP compaq dc7900 ultra-slim desktop, he was running xp so I decided to upgrade to windows 7.

  I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

  The problem with windows update, it takes too long and can't find updates.

  I did a little research and tried a few things but none of this has helped.

  You can try also to rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory tracking temporary Windows Update as follows:

  1. start an administrative command prompt.

  2. run the following commands pressing on enter after each line:

  Net stop wuauserv

  CD %SystemRoot%\System32

  Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

  Net start wuauserv

  3. try to reinstall updates

  Important the following symptoms occur when you perform this operation:

  • Updates that are currently downloaded but which have not yet been installed must be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

  • When you remove the Software Distribution folder, your download history is deleted.

  • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and Windows Update, you will need to reselect this option from the Windows Update Web site.

  Note: If the problem is resolved and you can successfully download and install the updates, you can safely remove the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

  Once more, note it is important that you restart (even two) to make sure that everything is re-created correctly.
