  You probably have driver problems with your audio hardware.  To confirm, bring up the Device Manager
  Start-> Run-> "devmgmt.msc".
  and check an indication of yellow or red error on your sound card.

  The best way to solve it is to download the audio driver from your manufacturer (in your case, Acer) and reinstall.  Start here:

  Select your model (-> Travelmate notebook-> 7730)
  Then select the operating system like Windows XP Professional x 32 (or x 64 as apply)
  You should then see a list of drivers, that you can download.  Download the Audio driver and install.
