A broken file associations in Windows 7 64 bit
I used to love the image viewer included with windows XP and I thought (wrongly?) that it was an integral part of explorer.exe, and so I had the unfortunate idea to this association of files with jpg files in windows 7.
Instead of doing what I wanted, when you open a jpg file now some weird recursion happens where it kept spawning multiple processes explore again and again until the machine is short of memory.
It is not letting me change it back, either. When I choose to select to open with a specific program, the checkbox "always use selected program" is Ghost for some reason any. It's like that with all the files! And in Control Panel > programs > by default of the programs > set Associations "jpg" appear not at all.
So, what can be done to remedy this? I am confident in the registry if this is what it takes, I just need to know what keys to change.
Hi Forb
Go to the website next where you will see a box with most general file type.
Click on the type that you want to restore to download the registry file. Download the file to your desktop, unzip the file.
Right-click on the file and select the Merge option.

How can I change the file association in Windows XP
All my WORD documents and such are automatically saved in a WORDPAD document, how can I stop that?
While the file associations in windows do not address how a file should be opened,
It does not address how a file should be saved.
the method of saving in a program is controlled by this program.
Therefore, if you use word 2003, then you must change to save documents rtf to word documents.
try clicking on Word Tools Menu then Options file.
then under the tab backup, do not forget to select the right format for saving your documents, IE Word documents (* .docs).

How to restore default file associations in Windows 7?
One of my friends accidentally selected the option that makes Adobe Acrobat the default option for all types of files open in Windows 7.
How can I help him restore the default values for what they were? I find that having him edit individual file associations (IE Internet Explore to .url) does not work.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Problems with the 'Association' in Windows 7 64 bit file
Even if I am able to go through the 'normal' process to associate a program with an extension, it does not work. After having completed steps browse and selecting the program it brings back me to the "Open with" window The program I selected does not appear in the "Open with" window and it seems that he ignores me everything simply.
I also tried the 'Default programs' route but wind upwards in the same window 'Open with' which ignores me.
Suggestions?
-----------------------
[EDIT]
(1) I realized that this probably isn't a forum appropriate for this question so feel free to ignore!
(2) I also realized that this may be a problem with associating extensions with non-64-bit programs and seems to be a non-issue if trying to associate with a 64-bit program... go figure. After playing a lil, I think that I figured it... [for me at least...]
The program you are pointing to is not saved correctly. In regedit: go to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.Sail under its name of shell > open > order. In the default change its location to the actual location of the executable file, press OK and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.Let me know if this doesn't seem to work. -
Cannot cancel the file associations in Windows 7 Lite
I changed my file associations so that the paint (which was used to open the fair rle, wmf and emf files), by selecting all. It worked, and paint opens now jpg, gif, etc. I noticed that I was not able to select the types individually - only the select all check box was available.
However, now I want to change the settings in the original three file types. I can't always uncheck the file types, I just chose, OR three originally. Viewer Photo of Microsoft still has the associations in that dissociating the, they are not associated.
Y at - it a fix for this bug? I'm up-to-date with my Windows updates.
Hey Jack,
Exactly how you try to change the file association?
You should be able to individually control panel.
a. Click Start and type default programs.
b. click default programs.
c. click on associate a file type with a program.
d. double-click .wmf and choose paint from the list of programs.
e. Repeat for other types of files.
This should be it.

How to set file associations in Windows 7 (not 'open', but others)
In Windows XP, I could go to a menuFichier associations see or change references to elements like: Edit, print, etc., in addition to 'Open', and I could put the opened another default action (examples 'play', merger or edit).
Where can I do this in Win7?
I know on the page "Panel-> Default Programs-> Set Associations (associate a file of a program)", but that seems to have only the opportunity to choose a program that will be called when the user "clicks" on the file, which is the default action.
I recently installed an image viewer, but it took all my image assocs, editing program.
This is some 'sense' (otherwise, how to see pics in the Viewer?), so I right click to see if there was another option to edit my photo (such as edit)... There are - except that it does not start my photo editing program, it starts 'paint '.
So, how can I do the 'Edit' menu option to call my editor?
In a more general way, how can I change one of the right-click options to point to my program, or if, say, 'change '.
was not there, and I wanted to 'Edit' on '.reg' programs to open the file in a text editor? These things were relatively simple in Windows XP, but now I have no idea on where to find these basic
Setting OS features.I can't imagine that MS would expect people to learn and use 'regedit' to make these types of changes - but this seems to be the only program supplied with Win7 to do this, or I just WAY missing something obvious?
Thank you!
You are missing the old style "File Types" dialog allowing you to resolve this kind of things? In Windows 7 (and Vista), you will need to set manually in the registry. But there is a small program that brings your familiar functionality. I have not used it myself, but it seems to be quite impressive. Here is the link: http://types.sourceforge.net/
Thank you very much for this link!

Reader Adobe XI changes all file associations in Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Yesterday, my desktop computer changes all files on the computer of Adobe associations. Of course, this made my computer useless. After consultation with Microsoft technical support. We have uninstalled (thank goodnes I had another user profile) Adobe and all returned to normal. Technical support is a malware and virus scan and found nothing.
This morning I went to install Adobe again and it's the same thing. I can't run Adobe on my machine. It worked fine until yesterday.
What should do? I need Adobe like everything else does.
You talk about this problem?

File ignored hosts, windows 7 64-bit, firefox
I edited my hosts file successfully in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts using a notebook running as an administrator; I have traced various
in the format "127.0.0.1 msn.com", "127.0.0.1 www.msn.com", etc. (a single space). I rebooted and checked the hosts file is edited, but when make a ping or navigation in firefox on msn.com, I don't get 127.0.0.1 but rather correct msn.com site. I looked in the folder c:\windows\sysWOW64 but that you do not see a hosts file to edit. I'm trying to filter malicious websites various. I don't have the same problem in my network hub that is XP sp2. Perhaps your hosts file is corrupt or in wrong format, for example Unicode. I would try this:
1 rename the original host file to make it out of the way.
2. type this command:
Notepad % SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.
3. enter in this single line:
127.0.0.1 www.altavista.com
4. Save and close the file.
5. type this command:
type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
See the unique altavista line?
6. Enter the following command:
Ping www.altavista.com

I reintalled 3 times for CS6, but the default program associated with the jpg file is always unknown application.
I try to change the default program, I see the photoshop cs6 icon in the Adobe program folder.
But just can be selected.
I recommend you contact Support Adobe for this playing with registry is very dangerous, that your computer may crash.
Still if you want to try, first create system restore point and backup of your registry, just in case something goes wrong.
In regedit: go to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.
Sail under its name of shell > open > order. In the default change its location to the actual location of the executable file, press OK and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.

I ran SFC/scannow this evening and received an error message saying corrupted files had been found, but could not be fixed, and gave me this path to find the journal and view and/or correct the files. I read a few articles in this community on how to access the logs as an administrator. No instructions in all of the arrticles works, I denied access on any line to display the files and I can't have them, either. My laptop Asus G74Sx actually works very well, these corrupt files are something that I should worry and spend hours and hours trying to coax my laptop to me as an administrator? Can someone please tell me how to enter the newspaper and how to fix corrupted files?
First step, run DISM to correct errors. Instructions located in the underside of wiki
Please run a check of system files (SFC) & DISM if you're on win 7 or higher
All instructions are in our Wiki article below... If you have any questions please ask us.Second step. Re run SFC. If errors occur in the log upload them on a single disc and we give a link to it in your next post
There are MANY false positives and false negatives.
