How to set file associations in Windows 7 (not 'open', but others)

In Windows XP, I could go to a menuFichier associations see or change references to elements like: Edit, print, etc., in addition to 'Open', and I could put the opened another default action (examples 'play', merger or edit).

Where can I do this in Win7?

I know on the page "Panel-> Default Programs-> Set Associations (associate a file of a program)", but that seems to have only the opportunity to choose a program that will be called when the user "clicks" on the file, which is the default action.

I recently installed an image viewer, but it took all my image assocs, editing program.

This is some 'sense' (otherwise, how to see pics in the Viewer?), so I right click to see if there was another option to edit my photo (such as edit)...   There are - except that it does not start my photo editing program, it starts 'paint '.

So, how can I do the 'Edit' menu option to call my editor?

In a more general way, how can I change one of the right-click options to point to my program, or if, say, 'change '.
was not there, and I wanted to 'Edit' on '.reg' programs to open the file in a text editor?

These things were relatively simple in Windows XP, but now I have no idea on where to find these basic
Setting OS features.

I can't imagine that MS would expect people to learn and use 'regedit' to make these types of changes - but this seems to be the only program supplied with Win7 to do this, or I just WAY missing something obvious?

Thank you!

You are missing the old style "File Types" dialog allowing you to resolve this kind of things?  In Windows 7 (and Vista), you will need to set manually in the registry.  But there is a small program that brings your familiar functionality.   I have not used it myself, but it seems to be quite impressive.  Here is the link: http://types.sourceforge.net/

Thank you very much for this link!

The computer was smart enough to put them on my hard drive in the first place, so it seems to me that it has the ability

Hello pivinquiruingumind and welcome to microsoft.

like many others your under the impression that computers are smart. and that computers have the ability to think. It is 100% fake. computers are quite ignorant, it's the programmer who makes an intelligent computer. but there are limits to what programmers can do.

extensions are no exception. they are not managed by the windows shell. are traversed by a program. Windows does not include what the program does, or he does not understand what is the extension. Instead, the extension is associated with the program. Windows detects the extension. detects the inscription of this extension and opens, he threw the program. It's all done windows. It does not include something about the program. or the extencion. It includes just the program uses some extension.

  • How can I change the file association in Windows XP

All my WORD documents and such are automatically saved in a WORDPAD document, how can I stop that?

While the file associations in windows do not address how a file should be opened,

It does not address how a file should be saved.

the method of saving in a program is controlled by this program.

Therefore, if you use word 2003, then you must change to save documents rtf to word documents.

try clicking on Word Tools Menu then Options file.

then under the tab backup, do not forget to select the right format for saving your documents, IE Word documents (* .docs).

  • How to handle file types in Windows 7

In XP, we can go to the Control Panel-> Folder Options-> File Types , choose an extension, and then chooseAdvanced and generally see a list of actions associated with the file type. You can change the default action or change action to modify the program / the command used for this action.

  • A broken file associations in Windows 7 64 bit

I used to love the image viewer included with windows XP and I thought (wrongly?) that it was an integral part of explorer.exe, and so I had the unfortunate idea to this association of files with jpg files in windows 7.

Instead of doing what I wanted, when you open a jpg file now some weird recursion happens where it kept spawning multiple processes explore again and again until the machine is short of memory.

It is not letting me change it back, either.  When I choose to select to open with a specific program, the checkbox "always use selected program" is Ghost for some reason any.  It's like that with all the files!  And in Control Panel > programs > by default of the programs > set Associations "jpg" appear not at all.

So, what can be done to remedy this?  I am confident in the registry if this is what it takes, I just need to know what keys to change.

    Hi Forb

Go to the website next where you will see a box with most general file type.

Click on the type that you want to restore to download the registry file. Download the file to your desktop, unzip the file.

Right-click on the file and select the Merge option.

  • How ascess the files in my Windows Vista Partition in Windows 7?

How ascess the files in my Windows Vista Partition in Windows 7? I have Windows Vista Partition, I case these files through my Windows 7 partition without logging in there?

    Thank you

You should be able to (I'm virtually certain it's possible) If you have the appropriate permissions or property rights in your Vista partition to allow access of the user of Windows7 or users of Windows7.  It's the way it works with XP and Vista and I suspect that it is essentially the same thing here.  You may need to add the users to the Vista partition/folders/files in Windows7 using regardless of their process (it varies probably Vista so I won't bother posting method Vista to do).

The best thing to do is to follow the advice of Michael Murphy and get help from experts in the Windows7 Forums.

You mean PDF not PDL. (I presume).
Save a PDF to your HARD drive, make a click right, choose 'Open with', choose "choose default program", choose Acrobat, and then at the bottom of the dialog box, click "always use the selected program to open...". "and then click OK.
