Access to multiple virtual disks of MD3000i from a host

Does anyone know of a manual describing the steps to settubg access to several virtual disks on a MD3000i from a Windows Server 2003 host?

  • HP EVA virtual disk LUN ID

I posted this is 3.0, but I wanted to try here also.

We are in the process of upgrading of 4 guests isolated from 3.02 to 3.5. All network configuration is identical on all hosts, but the client has decided to present a separate HP EVA virtual virtual disk (LUN) for each host. Isolation was a contractual obligation. The question I have is on shared disk and LUN ID.

I want to use VMotion to minimize downtime. Since they do not share currently disc, I need first to present all the LUNS (HP EVA virtual disks) on all servers.

My question concerns the LUNS ESX ID. EVAs HP do not allow you to set the LUN ID the first (HP EVA virtual disk (LUN) presented to a host receives a LUN ID of next 1, 2, 3, etc..) In my case, the ID of the LUN on current drive of each host is set to 1. When I introduce all disks to all hosts now have a situation where A ESXHOST will see the LUN ID 1 for a 'DISK 1' and 2 ID LUN "disc 2", while ESXHOST-B could show exactly the opposite.

It will be temporary because as soon as I can VMotion servers out, I will redo the presentation so all match however; There will be a short period where ID LUN will differ from a drive on different hosts.

Is that going to be a problem?

    Hello

You can set the LUN ID on the EVA only when he introduced a LUN to just one host at a time. It's a bit annoying, especially when you have a lot of guests. But the fact in this way you can ensure that all LUNS are presented with the same ID for the guests.

If you select multiple hosts at the same time the CommandView chooses the next available on its own LUN number.

  • Loss of confusion concerning the data on the virtual disk in VMWare

    The evening

Excuse the amateurism, but I'm looking for help with a problem I have with a virtual machine.

I created a Virtual Machine with a virtual disk of fixed size for use as a LAMP (in this case, Ubuntu 9.10) development environment. I have used this in the course of nearly a year and have taken quarterly snapshots, or before, I did something stupid to the BONE. So far we five snapshots and a clone that I got a month ago.

Recently, I created an another VM to install the configuraiton of LIGHT even on Ubuntu 10.04 (I wanted a new installation).  I didn't know it was a bad idea in time, so I created a second disk on the VM 10.04 and mounted the main drive of the virtual machine 9.04. Obviously, 10.04 altered the disc somehow, as I had received the "+ the Ramdisk parent has changed since the child was.

created. + "error every time I tried to start it.

After several unsuccessful attempts to try to find a recent clone, I created a new virtual machine and up from 9.04 virtual disk. However, from the start of this virtual machine, I went back to, what I believe to be, the first State of the virtual machine before snapshots. However, it is also possible that I lost the correct VM while trying to find a recent clone (of course, I hope it's a snapshot problem and not a problem of stupidity).

My question is, is - it possible that the disc that I mounted does not take into account my snapshots?

See http://sanbarrow.com/vmdk-errors.html#e4 for an explanation of the error and some tips how to fix it.

If in doubt ask before doing anything more that could "destroy" the disc.

  • Can a virtual machine cause several virtual disks?

    Hey all,.

I did some research but can't seem to find an answer.  I want one of my VM set up with multiple virtual disks.  Is it possible and if yes, how can I do?  I use the free version of ESXi.

Yes, you can simple add another hard drive to the guest.  Just go into the settings of the host, add hardware, and then select the hard disk.

I spoke with people from Dell and Vmware support.

Support for VMWare counterpart said that it is a matter of Dell... that VMware is a path problem and do what it is supposed to do.

The Dell guy says there is nothing wrong with the MD3000i and the problem is with VMWare.

None of them seem interested in helping me out more.

I tried using MRU (default) & political pathing Round-Robin and set up iscsi on the host esx, in accordance with the following document:

    http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/VMware ESX4.0andPowerVault MD3000i

I can vmkping for all the guests of all the peoples on the MD3000i without any problem.

If someone saw, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you

    Jason

Hmmm...  Well, if they are flipping back has nothing to do with VMWare, it is certainly a matter of Dell.  Have you tried their repatriation to the correct drives and then just reboot the stupid thing?

  • Virtual disk MD3000i not on the preferred path

Our MD3000i rpet table is not optimal and that a virtual disk is not on the preferred path.

We have two RAID sets on it with a VD each.  The former says her favorite way is controller 0, the second said his preferred path is controller 1.  But the controller 0 like take charge of both.

Using MD storage manager, I can change VD2 owned by controller 1.   But in the current for the next several hours, it passes backward, and the MD3000i starts orange flashing again.

If I restart the server that is attached to it, the question usually begins without having to wait a few hours.

I changed out Ethernet cables, and it did not help.  Either way, it all started when we changed the MD3000i attached to hosts.  It was attached to two Dell servers, now it is only attached to one.

After looking through everything, it seems that the iSCSI initiator is configured incorrectly. It seems that you only have one configuration of IP and the MD has two available. Here is a link that has a step by step on setting up the MD3000i and the MPIO.

    http://paulgrevink.WordPress.com/2012/02/21/configure-Dell-MD3000i-MPIO-with-Windows-2008-R2/

I would like to know how this happens. Also the only link that you have custody fall itself which normally points to a network problem may therefore need to look in the configuration of the switch as well.

  • Is it Possible to access only bypassed FC HBA to multiple virtual machines

    Hello

I have a FC HBA on my 5.5 ESX. Server. It does not support the function of SR - IOV. Is it possible to access this FC HBA across multiple virtual machines?

If possible, please provide as follows to go further.

    Kind regards

    Aashish

It is not possible. The basic material underlying PCI specification does not have a single shared between several independent operating systems PCI device.

SR - IOV solves by creating the virtual function peripheral PCI, but as you mentioned, that he can't stand not and first of all, ESXi supports that SR - IOV for Ethernet network devices and not for native FC HBA (excluded FCoE) functions.

  • Trying to fix a CID parent access to a file descriptor of delta but VM still does not start. Other error "cannot open the disk...". The specified file is not a virtual disk.

Starting the virtual machine has been tried several times earlier when I received the error message to tell the parent disk had been changed since the child was created. I looked at the resolution and had a go at fixing.

I downloaded the vmdk files to find the problematic descriptor file it corrected and then download the a back fixed to the data store. I then removed the VM of the inventory and then re he added before attempting to start it. He says now the specified file is not a virtual disk. Unfortunately, I didn't know that he was still working on a snapshot file and had been for some time. It was a former VM test that I had played a little bit with all learning on VMware, but unfortunately he had a few files on it which is no longer, I have backup ups for and I could really do with recovery of them! The base file and delta file are always on display in the data store and I can re - use the base file in a new virtual machine but I need the data from the snapshot if possible file. Not sure if it can be manually engaged at the base (I have a copy of). I'm new to this depth of troubleshooting and according to research I realize it is a great chance, the data is not recoverable. Having said that if there is no hope at all then I would try or at least have someone who knows what they're doing a go help before you tell me everything is lost! I'm not really bothered to get the virtual machine running again, but must be able to copy some files in the C drive.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thank you

    Craig

I can't tell you if the data in the virtual drive itself can be retrieved by the attached hard file. However, it seems that you have used an editor who added a BOM (Byte-Order-Mark) at the beginning of the file, which made her an invalid for ESXi.

Is there an advantage to run Windows 7 from a vs Bootcamp partition a virtual disk image?

I started to use a virtual disk image and just created a Bootcamp partition and added to the merger.  Things seem to be quite a bit faster using the Bootcamp partition.

Is this the case in general?  Just curious to know what others have experienced.

    Thank you!!

It is normal that you feel.  Realize that a VM is running "virtual hardware", which is generally not as fast that runs the operating system directly on the physical hardware.  Think of it as speaking through a translator.  There is a 'delay' for the message to be delivered. Take a look at the frequently asked Questions on VMware Fusion, about halfway down, the section on virtual hardware.

For Boot Camp however virtual, take a glance to choose the settings of VM right.  Among the main reasons to use one or the other would be the advantage of the speed of Boot Camp against the convinience of not having to restart the Mac or the ability to run several machines against virtual simultaneously only running an instance of Boot Camp.  (e.g.: simulate an entire network, with the file server, web server, mail server, etc., with just one physical machine.)

You have to poweroff the node, remove the RDM drives, migrate the virtual machine, and then add again in RDM disk.

RDM LUN must be on all hosts.

  • Storage on iSCSI - mounted directly from the VMware virtual disks

I am setting up a HUB/CASE/box Server mailbox of all-in-one for fewer than 500 users on a Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine and am about to configure the storage I need. The two words that I can't wait to hear more from Microsoft PSS is "not recommended" or "not supported." I have a Dell Equalogic PS6000 and have the ability to 'direct attached' compared to the VMware virtual disks for storage of mailbox databases. We run vSphere with vMotion, etc..

Using virtual disks bad practice? Advantages or disadvantages I should know about? Adding a layer of complexity that might come back to bite me?

I have a very similar setup and am currently using directly attached iSCSI volumes EqualLogic berries for my Exchange 2007 mailbox stores.  I also have the role of running UNIFIED messaging that works in fact remarkably well even if everything is running on a virtual machine.

It was in large part because the EqualLogic recommendations had to use directly attached volumes so that taking snapshots multi-application/replication tools worked correctly.  If the Exchange mailboxes are held on a VMFS volume, then Tools EqualLogic will not be able to get to them.

Microsoft have been OK on this configuration, and I actually had them made up our VM, one or two times when we iron out some problems of UNIFIED messaging (although I hide icon "VMWare Tools"!).

The best thing to do would be to create volumes you think you'll need and attach them directly to the virtual machine using the Microsoft iSCSI initiator, and then run the Exchange tool (I forgot his name) to test the storage for speed and capacity.

    See you soon.

  • To access ESXi 4 Update 1 custom server from dell MD3000i iSCSI SAN

    Hello

I'm brand new on VMware ESX/ESXi products and for the most part, no.  I configured several machines virtual with server 1 and 2.  I am trying to connect a virtual ESXi 4 server in a SAN and starts to become very confused about what I can or not do.  I hope that someone here can break it down for me because I couldn't find the answer to my specific questions.

    Here's how I'm Setup:

I have a Dell PowerEdge R710 with ESXi 4 Update 1 'Custom Dell' (whatever that means) is installed.

I have a Dell MD3000i SAN using iSCSI with a pre-configured dedicated virtual disk.

I would like to create virtual machines on virtual disk said.

I think that ESXi 4 is completely free.

It seems that to manage the server, I need to use 1 of the 2 products.  The Vsphere client or web application of VMware Go.

    If I use Vsphere:

I have the ability to add a type of storage through the user interface.

I'm on a 60-day trial. I thought that it was free.

If I configure my iSCSI via Vsphere and then the eval expires... what happens?  All jump on me and then I have to purchase a license to get it back?

    If I use VMware go:

It seems I don't really have any options to do any kind of configuration iSCSI in VMware Go.  I do?

I also have a XenServer that is configured in this way and it's all free. I wanted to try the bare metal of VMware solution, but now I wonder if I'll have to go back to Xen.

Can someone please relieve me of my confusion until I have to pull the plug on this experience.  Maybe direct me to the proper documentation on how to configure what I need with what I have at the cost free-is possible.

Thanks a lot for your comments and have a wonderful weekend!
