HP EVA virtual disk LUN ID

I posted this is 3.0, but I wanted to try here also.

We are in the process of upgrading of 4 guests isolated from 3.02 to 3.5. All network configuration is identical on all hosts, but the client has decided to present a separate HP EVA virtual virtual disk (LUN) for each host. Isolation was a contractual obligation. The question I have is on shared disk and LUN ID.

I want to use VMotion to minimize downtime. Since they do not share currently disc, I need first to present all the LUNS (HP EVA virtual disks) on all servers.

My question concerns the LUNS ESX ID. EVAs HP do not allow you to set the LUN ID the first (HP EVA virtual disk (LUN) presented to a host receives a LUN ID of next 1, 2, 3, etc..) In my case, the ID of the LUN on current drive of each host is set to 1. When I introduce all disks to all hosts now have a situation where A ESXHOST will see the LUN ID 1 for a 'DISK 1' and 2 ID LUN "disc 2", while ESXHOST-B could show exactly the opposite.

It will be temporary because as soon as I can VMotion servers out, I will redo the presentation so all match however; There will be a short period where ID LUN will differ from a drive on different hosts.

Is that going to be a problem?

Hello

You can set the LUN ID on the EVA only when he introduced a LUN to just one host at a time. It's a bit annoying, especially when you have a lot of guests. But the fact in this way you can ensure that all LUNS are presented with the same ID for the guests.

If you select multiple hosts at the same time the CommandView chooses the next available on its own LUN number.

We try to find the solution the faster for one of our internal systems.

Currently, we have a data store that is located in a SAN iSCSI via a virtualdisk file.

Since we want to benefit the maximum of iSCSI SAN configuration, we want to know what solution is faster:

-Via the data as virtual disk (diskfile) store

-Via direct LUN mappingl (mapping RAW)

I searched the documents, but it is impossible to find the figures/numbers how much performance gain, we would be able to get.

Us don't use clichés (and do not use then as well), and what other pinpoints should I also everything by making the decision to change the architecture?

There may be some performance improvements, you can do in your env, but they come from VMDK of RDM.

  • MD3000 cannot change virtual disk ownership / preffered path - ERROR 29

    Current configuration

PowerVault MD3000 (deleted by the moderator) - attached to two servers PowerEdge R610 using Dell SAS 5/e card in each r610. The R610s act as a host ESX VMWare ESXi 5.5.0

We have created multiple LUNS on the storage array and noticed that traffice all happening through a RAID controller or another module (and it seems to me not change without prompting when you look at the storage Bay). I turned off a two different virtual machines to try to change the path and had an error with a certain delay - I stuck this error below. I also tried to redistribute virtual disks tab the MDSM software nothing works support.

By reading, it seems that the LUN should be attributed to a particular raid controller before all I / 0, but I still feel like're missing us something as to why we cannot distribute the traffic properly.

According to some records for a MD3200 -.

"If the host has a path of data unique to the MD, the virtual disk storage array.

    Hello MrRedPants,

Since you are using a configuration not redundant you will have problems trying to modify the paths between the controllers since the two hosts have only a single connection to the MD3000.  What you could do if possible is to get 2 more SAS cables & connect ports second on the MD to RAID opposite that the host is currently connected to.

Now, if this isn't an option so that you can make is to have 2 disk groups and assign the virtual disks / LUNS that are connected to each host in their own disk group.  If you go to each host their own groups of disks, then you will need to stop the e/s as you move the Ramdisk to the new group of disks so that you want to discard any data loss.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Virtual disk "Hard disk 3' is a direct access mapped lun that is not accessible

I am currently in the process of upgrading our cluster of ESX 4.0 U1 to 4.1. In the process, I came across a physical MSCS 2 with RDM cluster. I stop the VMs and vmotion can them between the hosts of 4.0. Now as soon as I update hosts 4.1 I cannot vmotion the VMs to these 4.1 hosts. The error I get is: "virtual disk"drive hard 3' is a direct access mapped lun that is not accessible". I found an article KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1016210

who speaks ensuring that LUN number is the same in the presentation of all ESX hosts and I checked, it is the case, moreover, as I said vmotions does not always work for guests, that I have not yet updated. I have not tried anyone all LUNS and re - introduce, don't know if I should try that. Looking for suggestions.

    Thank you

You have to poweroff the node, remove the RDM drives, migrate the virtual machine, and then add again in RDM disk.

RDM LUN must be on all hosts.

  • Disk/LUN - formatting: virtual image size = file size?

    Hello

I am trying to add storage to a vClient and I'm just stuck on a step in formatting.

As you can see in the joint, it asks me to put in place a "maximum file size".

It includes images of virtual machine?

Because I'm creating some server images which can reach more than 256 GB.

or is it just images .iso and other files that I could save on this storage?

    vm123.jpg

BTW, "based on the maximum size expected virtual disk" means that the maximum file size is also right on the VM image?

Yes, as mentioned earlier, the virtual disk to the virtual machine is just a hard on the data store file and you will need to select the block size in case you use VMFS-3, who maybe don't have sense if guests need to access the data store.

  • RAW device to the virtual disk migration

When trying to cold migrate a raw disk device VM of EVA Storage to a virtual disk in a DS8100 it fails with the following message: "incompatible device backup specified for device ´0´" the size of the LUN is Go 510 and appaers message when 100% is full 3 hours laters. I set the block size 2 Mb in the data store, but when I try to migrate a RAw of 100 GB on the same VM migration works very well and I use the new virtual disk without problems.

This could be a problem with the maximum of storage migration?

Could you tell me if you know another way to migrate this raw device on the virtual disk?

  • Specify the size of the virtual disk beyond 256 GB

I'm editing the seetings on a virtual machine to have another drive.

When I create a disk I select the size of the drive, 1 TB. I point to the location of LUN 30 data store (2 TB).

When I click Next, I get the following message:

The capacity of the disk is entered was not properly formed number or was out of reach. It has been replaced by the nearest acceptable value.

This means - there is a procurement policy that I can change or what I need to select a card raw SAN LUNS?

The maximum size of virtual disk on a store of data before ESXi 5 depended on the size of the selected block when the data store has been created/formatted. Please take a look at the tables to http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384 to see the file sizes maximum depending on the block size of the data store.

  • Maximum number of virtual disk for a virtual machine in vSphere 4.1

I read the maximum record rate and see that the maximum number of virtual disk is 16 for FT.

I have the same document I seem not to be able to see the number max of virtual disk that can be taken in charge for a virtual machine.

The number will be the same as the number of LUNS per host which is 256?  I know the max is for the host, but that be will come the number of Director to the total number of virtual disk that can be supported in the virtual machine?

In fact, in a logic unit number, we can have more than one data store that can be mapped to a virtual disk.

    I'm confused.

Thank you and have a nice week,

    Anthony.

If I am not mistaken, you can attach up to 60 virtual disks to a virtual machine. 15 for each of the 4 virtual SCSI controllers.

  • a new datastore iSCSI (disk/lun) appears in the inventory. Warehouses of data, but not availble for quick vMotioning...

    Hello

We have added the new datastore iSCSI (disk/lun)

This new data store appears in the inventory. Warehouses of data, but not availble for quick vMotioning or the creation of a new virtual machine.

    did we miss a step?

    Ty

    r

The reason is that the data store is not presented to all hosts in a cluster. When you create the VM in vCenter Server, only warehouses of data visible to the host on which the virtual machine is created are displayed.

Make sure the presentation on your storage system is correct and rescan your hosts.

To check the above, take a look at the Configuration-> Storage for guests.

  • Resize and repartition the virtual disk

    Hi all

I'm under ESXi 4 Update 1 with a 1.6 to RAID 5, which is currently all dedicated to a machine virtual storage (it has no partition system on it, just the files). It currently has two partitions: a partition of 1.1 TB for files and a 500 GB partition with the old backups.

What I want to do is to delete the partition of 500 GB, give 400GO of it to 1.1 TB partition and then resize the virtual disk so that there are 100GB left in the data store that I can attribute to another virtual machine.

Who is? I searched, but never found any concrete answer on the subject and don't want to risk losing data to fumble with the controls.

    Thanks for any help.

OK, now I understand your conifugration.

You can't reach your end goal without going through a temporary storage in the Middle, like a usb orrr additiiiional on a San disk storage space or the local disk

    (1) create a vmfs on extra storage temp

    (2) use the vmware converter to clone your SBS installation to a new server with the correct (1.5 TB) disk size on the vmfs temp

    (3) delete your source VM

    (4) move the vm cloned to original VMFS

BTW: it is not a good idea to have a 1.5 TB LUN/VMFS filled 1/2 virtual machines using the entire VMFS TB 1.5: you have no place for the exchange of memory (if needded) and for snapshots. Please allow more space on the VMFS for such tasks. Rule formula says (((maxVMs * avgSize) + 20%) + total vRAM)

I have a problem where if I have a new VM to win 7 or Win 2008 r2 with or without vmtools.

If I reboot it up to 10 times without having to install anything, whether he'll join the black windows loading screen, then restart and then restart and try to start in safe mode, it still does not start.  the machine rendering it useless.

The single element only on these virtual machines is as follows.

Windows machines have 2 different virtual disks 1 on a lun, VMFS (vmfs version 3.21 c:) and a RDM VMFS (d :))

    3 questions

Is it a problem to have 2 different discs with 2 different stores file types?

Would this questions we see above?

Windows 7 and 2008 R2 are not supported in this version.  5 update brings support for these two operating systems.  Go to U5, maybe it's the solution.

    3 questions

Is it a problem to have 2 different discs with 2 different stores file types?

    Laughing out loud

Would this questions we see above?

    It is unlikely.

Also, I thought that you might not? VMotion/clone? a virtual machine if she drives in 2 different places?

I tested and I can vmotion live VM with records stored on 2 different LUN.

VMotion requires shared storage.  Local storage would be a problem if you tried to change hosts.

also would it be a problem if 1 store was running 3.2.1 vmfs and other store runs 3.31 and a v on each disc is used for the VM 1?

Lol this is explained in KB 1005325.

    Good luck!

  • Reference Dell MD3000 virtual disk

I have an environment to both nodes of ESX 4.0 and a shared storage (Dell MD3000, no iSCSI).

On storage, I have 10 at 10K SAS drives.

Virtual disk how I need to build? A two bigger or smaller?

    Thank you

    Max

It is not a simple answer, because it depends on:

    • Good storage practices

    • Storage type and the type of disks

    • VM number, size and type of e/s

    • Max VM and e/s per LUN

    • Size Max LUN (less than 2 to - 512 b)

In your case, with 10 discs and two nodes and storage running in active-passive mode, you can create 2 virtual disks.

Create 2 different groups of RAID5 (also think about using 1 disk as a global hot spare) and in each virtual disk group build 1 (or more if the size is more than 2 TB - 512b).

If you have a few VMS with high IO think also to use use 4 disks in RAID10 instead of RAID5 configuration.

  • Best practices - virtual disk of Raw device mapping vs

    Hello

A small question about the configuration. What would be described as the best practice to configure a comment server that required a large amount of disk space? What is the preferred option:

1 - create a virtual machine with a mapping of raw device to the LUN (on a san)

    or

2 - create a virtual machine with another large virtual disk that is in a data store on the LUN (on a san)

    Thank you

    Dave

Kader you are limited with 2 TB in any case (except using the iSCSI software from within the guest operating system), the only arguments are:

    (1) use RDM if it is possible that you will connect to this physical machine LUN. Or you already have the unit number logic of a physical machine as a large file server.

    (2) VMFS use in all other situations - VMDK give flexibility, you can migrate the virtual machine where you want.

You use a quick format? The normal format is slow and very intensive I/O.
