  This can happen due to the material Exchange when you P2V. Is there not an option to activate by phone? If this is not the case, take a look at the virtual machine settings to see if the NETWORK card is 'E1000' which should be recognized by Windows 2003 out of the box.

I guess I only have this copy of XP is installed on one physical machine, and the virtual machine is on the same machine that I have the right to install and activate the copy of Windows XP on the vritual machine. Is this correct?
  I have not activated the operating system on the virtual machine in case I am not allowed to activate it and attempts to activate it cause problems.
  Another reason, that I have not activated the operating system is because I have installed antivirus software on the virtual machine and I am reluctant to connect to internet with it until I have, or know whehter I need. Outside the activation of XP I won't need internet access on the virtual machine. Is this enough to antivirus on the host computer in order to prevent the infection from the virtual machine?

  As far as I know, there is no way to determine if a product key is active, or that he acted except when trying to activate the product with it.  There is no data to check.

  Here is the process for a manual activtion.  If anyone knows if this is possible, they no doubt.

  To activate manually, go to start, search, and type in slui 4 enter.  Enter your country and press Next.  You will be on a screen with a phone number and a bunch of codes below.  Dial the number and browse automatic guests until you get to a human being.  Have your handy product code because it will be asked.  Explain the situation, but it's the same PC and only installed on this PC.  They should give you a code to enter on this screen to activate Vista.  Honestly, I don't think that even they can help you with this.

  If it was the full (paid) version, you should have received the product key.  Looks like it was just the 'trial' version, and in this case, you will need to buy it from Microsoft to get the product key.

  If it is the full version, you will need to contact Dell to get the key.
