Add 3.5 a vSphere cluster host

Hey all!

It's my first update 4.1, bare with me!

I have a question about bringing a 3.5 with sub host the virtual computer to a cluster of vSphere.  I migrated 2 out of my 3 hosts at 4.1 and make them in my new Cluster (networking and storage is the program Setup and ready to go).  My older cluster always has the last host, all virtual machines running.  I can't take them down to those VMS, so I need a way to bring this host in the new cluster and vMotion these virtual machines to the new 4.1 hosts.  All VM VMDK files are on an iSCSI SAN and two virtual centres can see this SAN.  I tried converter on one of the virtual machine, but it asks me to create a new data store, not allowing me to use the current data store.

Now, my question is... If I disconnect the 3.5 host, can I connect from vCenter and add in the new cluster without causing problems to the virtual machine?  I know I can put in the maintenance and remove it, but brings down my VM.  Yes, I have all my configuration of license and Server 4.1 is ready to host the Server 3.5, until I have move the virtual computer out of it.

Thanks for the help!

Perfect... Then, you can manage the last your new VC 4.1 esx and migrate each step of each virtual machine.

  • Add 4 t LUN to windows host in vsphere

    I have Clariion CX4-120 with SATA drives. I need to present a 4 t disc to windows 2008 server.

    I created 1 t MON (RAID5) and then created a metalun join 4 1 t LUN.

    When I go to vsphere > Home > inventory > data warehousing > add data warehouses >

    Configuring the host error: cannot find the file system for the partition.

    So I can put the data store name > click Next and I get

    Can someone please. Thank you

    vSphere has a maximum size for the LUN limit - it's 2 TB - 256 b so to have your windows machine see a 4 TB drive you will need to do this in two ways - both with VM - first if you are able to use iSCSI use an iSCSI initiator of software inside the virtual machine from windows and present the storage in this way or to present several virtual disks and systems operating windows cover readers-

  • Mobile data warehouses are group 3.5 to vSphere Cluster.

    Issue.  I currently have a cluster of ESX 3.5 with a few virtual machines on one of the data stores.  What I was asking is if I grant that the storage (via SAN) to my new cluster could I can implement those virtual machines. on the new vSphere Cluster?  I guess I have to turn off the power, move the storage on the SAN of the old cluster again.  Add to the inventory on the new cluster and upgrade tools?

    Which apparently correct?  Something to look out for?  The only reason I'm thinking it's because a fo the machines has a 500 GB vmdk file store server I can not migrate to the new cluster.

    Quite correct.

    That's exactly how I made the last update to an environment of two hosts, where the hosts were replaced and ESX has upgraded day/re-installed 3.5 to 4.0.

    Are you want to save host to vCenter or to add the license key. ?

    Add license simply click on the host and in the side right pane, click the configuration tab, in the software section you will find licensed features option just click on the edit button and assign keys to the host.

  • Deliver the addition of iSCSI storage visible via vSphere (direct host or vCenter)

    Hi all

    I'm having a strange problem when I try and add a second drive to my host ESX 4.1. The storage is visible, but when I go to add it via the add storage wizard I get the following error message:

    Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions" of object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESX '172.16.10.221' failed.

    As shown below:

    The error is the same weather, I try to add via vSphere connected to vCenter or ESX 4.1 host directly.

    The funny thing is that I have a small iSCSI target on the same iSCSI storage that works very well.

    Here is my config network:

    And here is my config to storage adapter:

    I have also attached my vmkiscsid.log of the esx host file.

    I think what's happeneing, is that the ESX host tries to enter and format the storage via the console port of service instead of the iSCSI port I created but I could be wrong.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you.

    Pell Manny.

    Size of the disk (including the iSCSI LUN) is still limited to 2 TB minues 512 b... Try to drop the size of the iSCSI LUN down that maximum and try again... I would bet that the 'small' target that you have not had any problems with less than this limit is...

  • Storage shared between cluster hosts

    Hello

    I have a number of hosts managed under a VC server clusters. I want to downgrade the ESX 3.5 cluster and spend all my virtual machines to my vSphere cluster. I intend to move the storage currently used by ESX 3.5 clusters as well.

    Is this OK (or supported) or even possible for me to do the following?

    1. attach the storage used by the cluster cluster vSphere ESX 3.5 (so it is folded in TWO clusters).

    2. the servers from ESX3.5 to vSphere vMotion cluster cluster.

    3. turn off the cluster of ESX 3.5.

    I guess it boils down to two questions.

    1. can you be shared between host cluster storage two?

    2. If you can, is it possible to vMotion between cluster hosts, assuming that all the vMotion compatibility checks are successful?

    If the above is not possible, I'm guessing that a V2V of VMS ESX 3.5 would be the way to go, and I have to find new storage for the cluster of vSphere.

    Thank you

    G

    Hello

    If you have a SAN vSphere-taking in charge, so there is no problem.

    According to the CRA on your 3.5/vSphere ESX CPU hosts, you might have problems with storage vmotion/vmotion. One way would be to enable CVS, however requiring all virtual machines to be powered off.

    But present the LUN 3.5 4.x guests and make a svmotion is not a problem if you have taken care of storage. (www.vmware.com/go/hcl).

    Then you can just vmotion (if you do not have CPU incompatibility) virtual machines to new hosts, or stop and move.

  • Cluster VI3 and vSphere Cluster (migrate virtual machines)

    I have a VI3 and vSphere cluster.  Could I just drag-and - drop my virtual machines to the new Cluster or do I have to upgrade the virtual machines ' hardware of the v4 to v7?

    Thanks in advance

    1. you don't have to upgrade the virtual machine hardware, it is optional.

    2. you do not have to create new cluster, simply upgrade existing by-host. Virtual machines with hardware v4 can be VMotion'ed between 3.5 and 4.0 hosts

  • "Mem.Usage.Average" against the total aggregate of cluster host memory

    Please see the attachment for the whole story.

    Please give me a sanity check on this. I used the "Mem.Usage.Average" as a % against allocated VM MemoryMB. The sum of these calculations escaped by far the actual calculations of the vCenter % memory-based. So, I changed my calculations that you see in the worksheet to use the 'Mem.Usage.Average' against the total aggregate available on all hosts in the cluster. This amount came to less than 1% of my calculations based on vCenter GUI. Am I right against the total aggregate memory cluster host instead of against VM memory assigned using 'Mem.Usage.Average '? Thxs-

    ExcelOutput.jpg

    SDK is not clear on "total configured memory available or". https://www.VMware.com/support/developer/converter-SDK/conv55_apireference/memory_counters.html Part description of memory used as a percentage of the total configured or available memory.

    $start = (get-Date). AddDays(-5)

Average), 2)}}"

    Cluster is 6 hosts with 128G per host for total of 768G (786432 MB of RAM), there are 118 powered on virtual machines

    vCGUI.jpg

    for me the SDK says that percentage reflects the relationship between the memory 'active' in the virtual machine against the memory configured for the virtual machine.

    A configured with 8 GB of memory virtual computer that has 'use' of 25% is actively using 2 GB of memory.

    I think that your numbers you get for VMS are biased because of the great period of time during which you take the average (see previous answer).

    You can cross-check the mem.usage.average with the mem.active.average.

    In the following code, I calculate the different 2 meters actual memory used by the virtual machine.

    $clusterName = "mycluster.

    $stat = 'mem.usage.average ','mem.active.average '.

    $vm = get - Cluster - name $clusterName | Get - VM | where {$_.} PowerState - eq "Receptor"}

    $stats = get-Stat-entity $vm - Stat $stat - Realtime - MaxSamples 1

    $stats | Group-object - property {$_.} @entity.name} | %{

    [PSCustomObject] @ {}

    VM = $_. Group [0]. @entity.name

    MemoryMB = $_. Group [0]. Entity.MemoryMB

    MemUsagePerc = $_. Group | where {$_.} MetricId - eq "mem.usage.average"} | Select - ExpandProperty value

    MemUsageMB = [int]($_.) Group [0]. Entity.MemoryMB * ($_.) Group | where {$_.} MetricId - eq "mem.usage.average"}). Value) / 100

    MemActiveMB = ($_.) Group | where {$_.} MetricId - eq "mem.active.average"} | Select - ExpandProperty Value) / 1 KB

    }

    }

    The result shows a specific virtual machine, these two numbers are close enough to be considered the same imho.

    That they should be in fact, the mem.usage.average is derived from the mem.active.average.

  • Caution ghost on vSphere cluster 5

    Hello, I've been investigating an alarm on a vSphere cluster 5 in vCenter

    • I looked at the cluster down through all levels, searching for pending alerts or alarms - find no
    • There is no impact of the production and no reports of VM problems
    • I tried to disable alert and no reactivation - no change
    • Colleague of entry and Google have also drawn a white

    The only variable, I have been unable to exclude is several VM 'pause' - can it account for the warning, perhaps?

    I have attached a jpg file to show where the warning - if anyone has any input I would be grateful for your thoughts

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

    I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

    I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

    My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

    I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

    Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

    But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

    There is also another useful post that describes the advantages of the virtual centre running as a virtual machine:

  • Add Cluster hosts

    Here's the situation:

    3 servers new ESX 4.0 I am wanting to add to a new cluster that I created.  I activated the cluster for HA, DRS and CVS and you want to add these 3 guests to it.

    I get the message error "the name 'host_name' already exists.

    This may be the cause?  The documentation I read he said it is recommended to create an empty cluster first and then activate the features that you want such as VCA, etc. and then add hosts.

    I'm doing it, but I'm not having any success because of this error.

    Also, as a note aside... when I go through the add hosts Wizard and it happens to the license section.  I have 2 options... choose evaluation mode or select from a list of existing licenses... the problem is that the list of licenses... in this case 3 for guests I already setup with their appropriate licenses is grayed out.  I can't select the licenses, so I leave the assessment and move.  Is this normal?

    I appreciate all help... Thank you!

    The host is already managed by the vCenter Server? If so, just drag and drop it into the cluster, or remove it to vCenter inventory and add click with the right button on the cluster by selecting Add a host. You can't have two hosts with the same name, managed by the same server vCenter Server, so when you add the cluster and type in the info, if it already exists outside the cluster, but in the same vCenter inventory, then you will get this error.

  • Change password on ESXi host 5 root in vSphere Cluster

    I would like to change the root password on my ESXi 5 hosts that are in a cluster of vSphere. I can just go into the console and change the password? The traps?

    I found the article below which says that the host ' ' must be reconnected. Not sure what would cause 'may' come into play.

    Basically, the root password is only required for the initial connection, after this vCenter Server uses the account vpxuser to communicate with the host. However, according to for example ESXi root password change vCenter connectivity and there could be reasons of "update" the password (i.e. to reconnect the host). Not sure whether it's design or a bug! Maybe it's that note in the article you mentioned refers to.

  • VMware vSphere Web Services API - list cluster host/Get

    Hello

    How can I get all the details of host(ESX/ESXi) /cluseter of VMware vCenter Server?

    I am beginner in developing this kind of client application VMware.

    Suggest me a way to develop this kind of application.

    Thank you

    So you will actually need a traversal spec for ComputeResource.  It also will pick up your hosts in cluster as well.

    You will need to add the following:

    ns1__TraversalSpec ComputeResourceTraversalSpec;

    ComputeResourceTraversalSelectionSpec.name = new string("ComputeResourceTraversalSpec");

    ComputeResourceTraversalSpec.name = new string("ComputeResourceTraversalSpec");
    ComputeResourceTraversalSpec.type = "ComputeResource";
    ComputeResourceTraversalSpec.path = "host";
    ComputeResourceTraversalSpec.skip = &xsd_true;

    FolderTraversalSpec.selectSet.push_back(&ComputeResourceTraversalSelectionSpec);

    ObjectSpec.selectSet.push_back(&ComputeResourceTraversalSpec);

    That will allow you to cross the file to the folder data center to calculate hostsystem resources.

    I tested it on my end to be sure, and it works.

  • Cannot add cluster hosts

    I'm done with this...

    It started when I had to change my non routable IP addresses management network to my private IP addresses.  I kept getting errors with the host, not the new IP address.  I solved this problem, but now when I try to add the hosts again in my group, I get an error:

    "A general error has occurred: passwd: error immediate criticism-abandonment."  blah blah blah stack of error: "unable to set the account VIM on the host, could not set the password. It is possible that your password does not meet the criteria of complexity defined by the system. »

    It is ESXi 5.5u3, I tried the following:

    Remove the vpxa account, restarted host - same mistake

    Restart the services vpxa - same mistake

    Restart the vCenter - same mistake

    VI etc/pam.d/passwd: N0, N1, N2, N3, N4 - same mistake

    VI etc/pam.d/passwd: n0=-1,n1=-1,n2=-1,n3=-1,n4=-1--meme error

    Checked the system authentication, do not know what its supposed to look like, but both hosts match

    For the life of me, I can't understand it and Google has basically the same steps that I have just listed, I don't want to really blow the configuration and reinstall, but he is looking to get down to that... unless someone here knows where else the complexity of password or criteria for the system is set up...

    Fixed the problem myself... Thank you!!

    Action taken:

    Removed the vpxa account - I don't really think this has no effect on the issue

    Retirement services - did nothing until I've known really

    After coming home and watching my esxi, pam.d file hosts and comparing the differences, I just on a hunch deleted after /$ISA / pam_passwdqc.so, then re-entered the information as it was on my host at home.

    SSH in hosts:

    cd\ etc.

    PAM.d cd\

    passwd VI

    My hosts had /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = 3 min = disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, 7.7

    My hosts at work had /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = N N0, N1, N2, N3, N4

    I edited the line to reflect the password of 14 characters required and the value of the retry N, so it looked like this

    /$ISA/pam_passwdqc.so retry = N min = disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, disabled, 14

    : wq

    output

    Restart the services, actually I rebooted the host, then add in vCenter without problem
