Storage shared between cluster hosts

Hello

I have a number of hosts managed under a VC server clusters. I want to downgrade the ESX 3.5 cluster and spend all my virtual machines to my vSphere cluster. I intend to move the storage currently used by ESX 3.5 clusters as well.

Is this OK (or supported) or even possible for me to do the following?

1. attach the storage used by the cluster cluster vSphere ESX 3.5 (so it is folded in TWO clusters).

2. the servers from ESX3.5 to vSphere vMotion cluster cluster.

3. turn off the cluster of ESX 3.5.

I guess it boils down to two questions.

1. can you be shared between host cluster storage two?

2. If you can, is it possible to vMotion between cluster hosts, assuming that all the vMotion compatibility checks are successful?

If the above is not possible, I'm guessing that a V2V of VMS ESX 3.5 would be the way to go, and I have to find new storage for the cluster of vSphere.

Thank you

G

Hello

If you have a SAN vSphere-taking in charge, so there is no problem.

According to the CRA on your 3.5/vSphere ESX CPU hosts, you might have problems with storage vmotion/vmotion. One way would be to enable CVS, however requiring all virtual machines to be powered off.

But present the LUN 3.5 4.x guests and make a svmotion is not a problem if you have taken care of storage. (www.vmware.com/go/hcl).

Then you can just vmotion (if you do not have CPU incompatibility) virtual machines to new hosts, or stop and move.

  • Storage shared between double-boots restore points?

I just created a system to dual-boot with the boots in W - 7 64-bit (a legal copy, SP1, with all updates).  When I set up the first system, I made my usual things, including disabling connections to support remote and by increasing the amount of storage for restore to 10 GB by default 5 GB Points.  Then after that I installed the OS of the second, I've disabled Remote Assistance connections and attempted to set 10 GB of storage for Restore Points.  But it has already been set to 10 GB!

At a minimum, the second boot is to copy the value to use for the storage of Restore Points.  But are these boots also shares the real storage, in other words, they both use the same area to write the Restore Points?

This looks like a bug to me.  The value and storage of Restore Points must be independent for each operating system.  I wonder if the MBR/BCD/whatever confused because my multiple-boots are the same OS.

    Hello

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community Forum.

Based on the information, it seems after installing Windows 7 64 bit again on a dual boot, storage space defined for the default restore to 10 GB points.

It would be useful that you can answer the question to help you best.

Why have you created a dual boot with the operating system that has the same architecture and than the previous Version?

Microsoft does not recommend the use of a Dual boot with the same architecture and same version of operating system on both computers.

If you have installed the same version of operating dual-boot for reasons of confidentiality, you can set a different user accounts (administrator accounts) on the same operating system instead of a dual boot.

  • Add VM storage shared to multiple hosts

    Hello

I have a NAS of QNAP for NFS datastore and 2 ESXi hosts (without hard drives).

They are set to watch the NFS-data store.

    Now my question is:

Is it possible to add a virtual machine from this data store for the two inventories?

Or do I vCenter to do this?

I want the excact same virtual machine for two guests, not copy1 copy2 for host2 to host1.

    Kind regards

    Soren

I want the excact same virtual machine for two guests, not copy1 copy2 for host2 to host1.

It's quite confusing, what a virtual machine can be saved on a single host only at a time. Can you care for your condition a little.

  • Move a virtual machine to turn off between two hosts, shared storage

    Dear Experts,

Please guide me for the next case. There are two hosts of Esxi, host 1 is Esxi 4.0 and host 2 is Esxi 4.1. There are store data SAN storage that is visible to both hosts.

I watched solard winds VM monitor utility that hosting 2 consumes 90% of the memory while its processor is ok. On host 1 is normal. So, I want to spend only a few VM of to host 1. So please correct me if what I think are OK. I will turn off the virtual machine to be moved from host 2. Then I it will remove host 2 inventory. Then on host 1, I'll go to the data store in the folder that VM and do a right click on the file 'say add to the inventory' and now I'm going to see this virtual machine in the inventory of the host list, just turn on and everything is perfect, is this correct?

Second question on the same hosts, there are a few other data stores that are visible to a host. As if this is the case there is a virtual machine on a data store that is visible to host 2 and I want to spend this VM to host 1 to reduce load on host 2. How to move this virtual machine because this data store is not visible to host 1? Will I have to copy this VM files in a data store that is visible to host 1? If YES then what real required to copy files?

    Kindly help me.

    Kind regards

From your description I m assuming that you use not vCenter to manage your hosts, correct?

If you have a store of data shared between two hosts you can do the steps you descripte (power off, remove the inventory etc.).

For your second case there are several ways, it depends on where you want to place the virtual machine in the future. Wouldn't be on the shared data store that already exists or can in the local data store on the other host? Or is there an option to also display the current data store to host 1?

If you want to copy the VM files copy the whole folder of it.

    Kind regards

  • Share data warehouses between clustered hosts

Hello, we had initially a cluster of ESX consisting of two guests who had shared access to different VMFS LUNS on an iSCSI SAN.

Recently we bought an additional server, and additional storage and we have some problems to get the extra VMFS LUNs to be recognized by all hosts. The additional LUN is recognized by all hosts after a new analysis to Configuration-> storage adapters, but it seems that data warehouses can be added only for the storage of an individual host and not shared by the cluster?

Adding the extra VMFS LUNS to a host works very well but they are not immediately recognized by the other guests and whenever you try to add data to them warehouses they insists on formatting the LUN and treating it essentially as a data store different.

Since there is no problem sharing data between hosts warehouses in the original configuration, I wonder what setting it is necessary to enable sharing between all hosts in a cluster of data store? Thanks in advance!

Probably, you have LUNS in different ways for each ESX Server (or the new ESX). If any information logical unit number (Lun ID, wwwn, etc.) is not the same for all ESX host tend to view this as a snapshot LUN.

If you can't find what's going on, you can try a workaround (not too recommended but should work in your environment): go to the ESX configuration tab, click Advanced settings, and look for LVM. DisallowSnapshotLun option under LVM. Change it to 0, click OK and perform a new analysis. Repeat this for all of your guests.

Please let us know if it works.

  • Is ASM cluster configuration, possible to detail all cluster hosts

In the case of configuration in cluster of ASM (where its possible to create one ASM DiskGroup is shared between all hosts in the cluster) is it possible to obtain information on all hosts (cluster node) (which are part of this cluster configuration) one machine.

For example. If we have three nodes Node1, Node2, and Node3 configured using ASM cluster (i.e. default ASM instance will be ASM2 ASM1, and + ASM3 on these machine) and then I create multiple starts (some shared between all three nodes and bit limited to single node or two) using a set of SAN disk visible to all.
In such a scenario, can I get the details of Node2 and Node3 comes to log in Node1 (i.e. Since one machine one single node part of ASM cluster configuration, I need information of all other machines/nodes).

Is this possible? If so, some tips on the way which will be a great help.

    ~ Stéphane.

    Hi stephane,

Maybe I'm missing something here, or I'm too detailed, but depending on how General should be your script, there are some steps, you must check to avoid the false assumptions - e.g., as here: "+ to get the CRS_HOME, I can grep for crsd.bin. If I don't get this running process, this means that configurations is a StandAlone OracleDB and turns to the ASM, ASM is too stand-alone instance. + »

If you can't find the crsd.bin running, it could also mean that it will not turn now - for some reason any. If you find a DSO running instance, but not crsd.bin, Yes, you can generally assume that you would have a configuration of ASM nonclustered (autonomous), unless you run into a BUG / failure.

Therefore, it might be a good idea to check the existence / first configuration, then to the current process. For example:

IF you have installed Oracle Clusterware, you will find an init.cssd under /etc/init.d (for Linux, similar directories for other OS). Therefore, check first for the operating system, if you have the OS specific scripts, then just check for the init.cssd init directory.

The advantages of checking the init.cssd are: you will get the Oracle Clusterware House - it is set as a variable:
    = ORA_CRS_HOME / ora/clusterware AND you usually get the Oracle user: ORACLE_USER = oracle

Then you can check if Clusterware is running. You will have more than one way to do it now. You can use ps - ef or you can use Clusterware orders as crsctl check CRS or things of that kind.

Of some people could argue that there is a DSMB for ASM in standalone (non-cluster) ASM facilities running and there is therefore an init.cssd. YES, but this init.cssd shouldn't be in init in this case - see the comment in the header of the script init.cssd: "In a local, nonclustered, installation without CARS, it must be placed in a directory rcX.d".

However, just to be safe, you can always check whether or not you will find init.crsd, init.evmd, which are very strong indicators that Clusterware has been installed on the system, unless it was not uninstalled properly...

Once you've found the Clusterware installed, running AND you know the path to the House - it's easy:

As said previously, you can use olsnodes to get the nodes in the cluster. You can still use crs_stat. It will tell you the ASM / RAC, the instance number and this node the instance number is running on:

    Name = ora.myrac1.ASM1.asm
    TYPE = application
    TARGET = ONLINE
    STATUS = online on pmrac1

    As for CARS DB instances:

    Name = ora.myrac.myrac1.inst
    TYPE = application
    TARGET = ONLINE
    STATUS = online on pmrac1

To determine which is the node that you are running your script on: host name must do.

Of course, all this will work only IF you have installed Clusterware. For environments not clustered, you must work with the ps - ef command, sqlplus and oratab file as you mentioned below, which makes it a bit more complicated. We could predict that's SO so OTHERWISE in your script - IF cluster, THEN do foo, otherwise do BLAH. Just an idea.

    For this question:
Belongs to ASM cluster - (yes/no)
(If crsd.bin is running, ASM is clustered. Can this method be invoked always?)

IF you have a cluster installed, ASM should be part - is the default and recommendation. However, you can run in a broken configuration. You want to guess in your script and secure?

Just a few random ideas. Thank you
    Markus

  • vMotion (without shared storage) between two hosts with different vSwitches standard s VM

I can VM vMotion (without shared storage) between two hosts with different vSwitches standard? The vSwitches on these two hosts have different names and number of NIC, but have the same name of portgroup.

It is important the portgroup bears the same name... This is the reference for the VM...

  • Sharing data between the host computer stores in different groups.

I read in several places that sharing of data warehouses between the host in different groups is possible, but I don't get the warm and fuzzies when the hosts are different versions.

    vCenter is 4.1

Group Alpha is 4.0 vmfs 3.33

Bravo of cluster is 4.1 vmfs 3.46

My goal is to move the virtual machines that meet the specific criteria of group Alpha for Cluster Bravo then the availability of flowing freely between clusters.

The only concern I have is when adding Cluster Bravo to the same host of 3PAR alpha value of Cluster sharing all the data store, Cluster Bravo will try to reformat to vmfs 3.46 break Cluster Alpha to see the virtual machines stored in the warehouses of shared data?  I don't want to present the old warehouses of data to the new cluster only break from old cluster.

    Hello vmsjsn

ESX/ESXi 4.X supports all versions of VMFS file system.

Using your example of Alpha and Bravo. Kudos to will write more Alpha. you will be able to cross all hosts on the shared storage.

  • Problem when adding 2nd host in Iscsi storage shared

    Hello people.

I'll try to explain exactly my problem even if it is a little difficult liitle!

First of all, we are talking about a test environment that is installed in my house just for learning purposes.

I am facing a strange my iscsi storage behavior when trying to join a second host to storage vmotion purposes. I was using an Esx host (3.5) for a while and I had no problem with the iscsi storage (I use an old pc with freenas on it). I must say that I got lucky, also, local sata controllers have been recognized so I could test the Storage Vmotion between two storages (Commons and iscsi) with success in this host.

To continue to learn, I decided to also buy another pc to test Ha cluster, Vmotion, DRS. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the same material and who as well as sata controllers do not to be recognized, so I used a disk ata for OS and my intention was to use for the volume vmfs3 iscsi storage.

In the first host esx I used, you can see 3 storage adapters: vmhba32 vmhba33& gt; Controllers local sata,34vmhba& gt; initiator iscsi software

In the second esx host, you can see only the vmhba32- & gt; the iSCSI Software initiator.

The first time everything worked ok, which means that I have attached iscsi storage in host the2nd by rescaning the vmhba and I was able to browse the datstore and see the contents of it, but it lasted only 10 minutes. Then suddenly I lost the connection to common storage to both hosts, I could see in the section maps of storage, but when I pressed update in the storage section, nothing happened and even when I tried to add it using the add storage I received the message usual "cannot read the partition table information. After being a little more careful I noticed that in the section storage cards, I could see the same vmhba34 in the two hosts with the same alias to the host of the first, and here's the strangest part, the situation I described above has been changing from time to time, which means that a few times I have seen the vmhba32 in both hosts and after some time vmhba34 in both hosts! (crazy)

I took the big decision after playing with the partition table, without effect to use the ' vmkfstool - C vmfs3 s ' _free "_ / vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba32: 0:0:1" command

in the second host, of course, I lost all data, but now with a simple refresh in this host, I was able to see the storage.

    Unfortunately, I still couldn't ' 1 host storage access and I published the same command "vmkfstool - C vmfs3 s"free"" / vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba34: 0:0:1 ""

with only the change you see in bold. Accordingly, it was to see the storage after a refresh with free (1) name.

Now he is currently working for 2 days with this way not recommended and what I would be really grateful if could help me clarify what exactly is happening.

My main problem is that I am in front of a very unstable environment that might as well have the same unexpected problem in the future and I can't reformat always storage and loss of all virtual machines

I tried to describe the best I could to this strange situation!

Thank you for your time and any help or advice would be most welcome!

I was looking for a similar solution. Seems to be the only iSCSI host is possible on freeNas. See here: http://apps.sourceforge.net/phpbb/freenas/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=403&sid=f4881e6e25e752e6ee8c6b0eae5887d3

The only solution for learning seems to be to install the server ESX or ESXi in a virtual machine and then use iSCSI. Vm Instructions to complete the installation here (you must all PDFs 6) http://knowledge.xtravirt.com/white-papers/esx-3x.html or you can replace the opnefiler by the SUN's VM iSCSI. http://www.sun.com/storage/disk_systems/unified_storage/resources.jsp , you must use the vmware converter to convert the SUN's virtual to be used in ESX machine found this in a forum... but can not find more URL. I have not tried myself but, looking for just because you want to get a similar setup.

  • Can I create an internal network or isolated on VDS shared between hosts?

We seek to deploy VDS on our site of recovery (for MRS). We have expanded network of level 2 so the primary site and recovery, guests can use the same IP addresses, but I don't know the best way to test the SRM. If I create a dvportgroup SRM, without a dvuplink, the dvportgroup may exist on all hosts that share the same configuration of VDS, but will be virtual machines connected to this dvportgroup be able to communicate on different hosts?

Otherwise, what is a good way to achieve an isolated private network that can be shared between virtual machines that have the same IP address as production systems? A distinct community VLAN?

They will not be able to communicate without a VLAN on the physical switch upstream.

If you have licenses VCloud suite for POSSIBLE, you could create a VXLAN to communicate, but the easiest solution would be to create a VIRTUAL LAN.

  • vCenter storage iSCSI 5.5 and shared between virtual machines

I have just two 2012 Win computers virtual server in the cluster.  I've prested my iSCSI LUNS and the ESX host can see them and I might add in order to become a data store.

My VMs Win2012 need to share the storage for a cluster SQL database.  I have never done this and everything I tried at this point has failed.  I tried to create the ROW, but that only worked to connect it to a player on one of the virtual machines.

I'm sure this is possible, but I'm not even sure where to look.  Is it really that RDM is for or is there another way?  Looks like I have would be sufficient to use the initator iSCSI in Windows to connect to my SAN but that would probably slow.

    Any help would be great!

Yes it can be done - have you seen http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-55-setup-mscs.pdf

  • Is it possible to use GPFS or another build is a SAN storage shared for multiple ESX and ESXi hosts?

It depends on your storage space.

You must connect all hosts to the same San, then follow the configuration guide of ESXi and specific documentation for your storage space (for sharing LUNS on multiple hosts).

  • Storage vMotion issue License - license of moving between ESX Hosts 4.1?

I have a question about Storage vMotion with ESX 4.1 license.

One of my environments ESX 3.5 existing consists of 10 ESX 3.5 hosts - 8 ESX 3.5 servers Standard and 2 ESX 3.5 Enterprise servers.  I use a centralized license server (I think that's the correct term).

I found that I can "move" the vMotion (and vMotion) Storage capacity of two of my 10 servers that only two of them are enabled for vMotion, both.  I do this by topic under VI Client-> select the host ESX-> Configuration-> network-> properties-> VMkernel-> Edit-> toggle the box "VMotion" activated-> OK.   I guess that by doing this, that I'm actually just spend my licenses 'ESX Enterprise' between the hosts.

Be able to run Storage vMotion on one or two guests at a time is a lot for a few times a year I need to reconfigure my back-end storage.

    Two Questions:

    1. this use is technically legal in a perspective of VMware licenses?

    2. now, I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 and wonder if I'll be able to keep doing this?  I have read that ESX 4.x got rid of the centralized server license model, so not sure if I could 'move' licenses around like that... In fact since vMotion is now included in Standard Edition, I guess I could 'pull out' through a license only one ESX Enterprise server in order to obtain the license of storage vMotion.

I let my support/subscription lapse for as long it is cheaper to purchase new licenses rather than paying for support costs with retroactive effect on my existing licenses.   The price difference between Standard and Enterprise is large (3 times the cost) that I don't think I can swing is business licenses for all of my guests past the bean counters, where the reason for this post.

    Reflections and comments?

Each host has a license key number. You can apply a new license key to a host, and it is immediately activated. I guess you would be technically violate licensing for seconds as a license number was recorded at two hosts. There is a place in the vSphere client to "assign a new license key to this host. When a license key has been assigned, it remains as a choice, then you can simply choose the functionality licensed one and below the other.

I turned off a VM to ensure that he had picked up the CVS settings. I am able to vMotion, virtual machine when it is off, but this is not enough as we have several "stuck" on the same host machine and cannot be moved by the DRS or manually.

Virtual machines are Windows 2003 (R2, SP2, x 32). worked well before vMotion on all hosts. Other identical machines from the same model are fast vMotioning very well, and when we were on ESX 3.5u2 wasn't a problem.

Can someone advise me on how I can diagnose and fix this problem?

I had the same problem after migrating from ESX 3.5 to V4.0 with almost the same HW-Configuration you have. (BL490c and BL480c). But in my environment, the article you mentioned has brought the solution:

To manually remove the CPUID masks using the VI Client:

1 power off the virtual machine.

2 - Click on the VM, then click on change settings.

    3. click on the Options tab.

    4. Select CPUID mask under Advanced.

    5. click on advanced.

    6. click Reset all to default.

    7. click on OK.

    8. click on OK.

    9. start the virtual machine and migrate.

Have you actually tried it? The default mask is OK, there is no problem with it in your environment, as I have said already, I have the same hardware as you.
