Adding disks RAID config?

I have a Dell R510 with 4 disks configured with RAID 5 used with vSphere 5.5 - ESXi

I have 2 homes opened on the server R510.

Is it possible to insert two new hard drives and initialize them to allow the storage of ESXi 5.5 without disturbing the currently defined RAID 5 configuration.

Thank you

RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 disks.

You need only to configure a new VD - don't forget to check the advanced and Initialize When creating.

Insert the disks HOT (do not turn off insert), then restart the CTRL-R utility.

  • Adding a RAID card to help speed up the export (and another question reader) in first Pro CC

First of all, I read the Page Tweakers export section because that is my main concern is. First my questions, then the background and my current and proposed configurations:

Question 1: Adding a hardware RAID controller, for example an LSI MegaRAID will sufficiently remove the burden of parity management CPU on my RAID 5 software that the CPU will jump of joy and export faster?

Question 2: If true for above, then compare thoughts on adding smaller SSD for either a RAID 0 or less two RAID 0 volume volume complete HDD RAID 5. In other words, I think the purchase of four Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSD to put in a four disk volume to handle everything (projects/media, media, previews, export cache), or split it into two volumes of two disks of each and divide the tasks, or keep the idea of volume four disc and previews and exports on my drive HARD RAID 5 array.

The 850 are valued at SEQ write: 550 / 470 MB/s so I could get around 2000 / 1500 MB/s read/write to a disk four RAID 0 or 1/2 who, if I divided in two volumes to minimize the volume of read/write at the same time, if it really matters with these SSD?

The Tweaker page made some comments. A split is carried out the tasks between different drives, rather than a large effective RAID can really slow things down. Because SSDS are much faster than a single HARD disk, I think its more accurate than so I'm leaning towards the configuration of four discs put OS & programs on the C drive, media & projects on media on SSD (2 disks RAID 0) Cache and D (HDD RAID 5), file exchange & Previews & export on 2nd SSD RAID 0 (or combine the two RAID 0 and their functions).

Just trying to get a point of view here, since I have not bought anything yet. Any experience/stories, I would be grateful.

    My current setup of training:

My D drive is a software RAID 5 consisting of four 1 TB Western Digital RE4 (RED) 7200 RPM hard drives with CrystalDiskMark SEQ read/write of 339 / 252 MB/s.

The C drive is 500 GB SSD (Samsung 840 (not Pro) and fact 531 / 330 MB/s.) My OS, Program Files and Page file are on C and media data/files/projects, etc. that are all about the RAID drive.

    Problem:

Current configuration allows for smooth installation, just export seems slow, usually taking between two and two and a half times the video length to export. Thus, a 10 minute video takes 20-30 minutes for export. 15 minute video can take 30-40 minutes to export. The first 10% of the export of re-encoding takes less than a minute (seems fast), but it becomes slower when the final 10 or 20 percent may hang for several minutes as my system is running out of steam. So, where's the waste?

I activated the hardware acceleration (because the GPU hack my GPU is not listed) and it can break through to 25% use a few times and eat up to 600 MB of VRAM (I have 2 GB of VRAM), otherwise it is slowed down export set. The CPU can boost at 50%, but it seems either too busy.

Our calendar is simple with two video and two audio streams (a little music and especially the voices), with simple transitions (jump cuts or cross dissolves). Sometimes, we fast correct color, so that could use the GPU? Also, given that we are filming in 1080 P 60 p and 1080 export 29.97 FPS, I think who is scaling and using the GPU. I know that without the GPU, it takes much longer. I excluded buy a faster GPU because it doesn't seem to be breaking a sweat. I just need to know if my system is a bottleneck at the level of the disk hard because I am using software RAID and my disks are slow and hardware RAID will considerably reduce the processor load so it can export more quickly.

Our files are not huge in nature. Most of our clips are several MBs each. Total files in the project are between 5 GB and 10 GB for each video with Windows Media File export being 500 MB to 1.2 GB on average. Look using Panasonic Camcorders, so the original files are AVCHD, I think (.) MTS files?).

    Considerations:

    1. I think to buy (and future proofing) a LSI Logic MegaRAID 9361-8i is 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA (because some SSD current can exceed the standard 6 Gbps).

    2. I will not replace my current HDD RAID 5 as not in my budget to spend 6 or more large SSD. These discs are more important to me for temporary storage because I delete files saved once. I don't mind a few smaller SSD inexpensive if they can make a significant difference for editing and export.

I can only guess my RAID HDD is slow but the CPU is burdened by parity. I guess running RAID 10 would not really help.

    My configuration:

    my configuration:

    CPU - CPU i7 - 3930K @4.5 GHz

    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR3 2133 @2000

OK, after overload of information on everything I tried (free), which might be my answer here. I went from codecs to export. When you use Windows Media File, Premiere Pro seems chugging along much slower than when you use the h.264 (not h.264 Blu - Ray). I don't know if it's because Microsoft has found a way to break it or what. But I'm the CPU usage of 70-85% on the 2 Pass of 2 as well as the use of the memory of 40% (or 12 GB). It exported in 14 minutes. Woo - hoo. I then did a similar test using Windows Media File. It took 31 minutes to export. The CPU has spent much of his time in the 30%, especially down in the 1930s mid-1940s with spike for memory usage was only 24% to 35% and 50%. Since then, I've read how h.264 codec is 'plu' for online files. It compresses better with less compression artifacts. He seems better, etc. Well, they both seemed on the same thing for me. I play both on my TV 70 "before I could comment further. In the future, I will consider a RAID controller and upgrade the HDDs to SSDS.

  • Re-create a virtual disk (RAID 1) of two existing drives

After several power outages, my server Dell PowerEdge T110 ii starts plu. The virtual disk (RAID 1) has disappeared, but the two physical disks are still visible and a State of readiness.

Is it possible to create a virtual disk Raid1 of two existing disk which was composed the original virtual disk without losing any data?

  • PowerEdge R530 - expand Raid 5 by adding disks

I have a R530 PowerEdge with Perc H330 mini with currently 3, 300GB sas hard drives configured as a virtual disk.  VMWare ESXi 6 is installed with a couple of running virtual machines and I'm out of room.  I installed a Supplement 3 of the exact same hard drives and wants to expand the virtual disk with 2 of the discs and the other as a spare drive.  Using OMSA I put the hot spare, however before you reconfigure the virtual disk, let me know if I'm doing it correctly.

    Within the OMSA.

    (1) select my virtual drive, select "reconfigure" and run

    (2) (check two additional disks to add to the virtual disk, press to continue (step 1 of 3))

    (3) raid level default switch to Raid-0 for RAID-5 current and desired and press continue (step 2 of 3)

    (4) check the settings and click Finish (step 3 of 3)

I can do this without closing to the right of my VM?  This will not destroy my data this?  I have backup, but would prefer not to have to restore.

Thanks to confirm or point out my mistakes.

Yes, it is intended to make online and is non-destructive.

  • Adding disk hard BIOS setting

I added the 1 TB SATA drive.

Now things are going wrong after reboot without initial flaw. No USB, slow performance. Starts at W8.1, but something wrong with the USB devices.

I see a short menu at startup. says press ctrl-I to define the two hard drives. However, this brings me to any hardrive settings.

I looked in the BIOS setting and the disks are configured in RAID. Is it OK? I haven't changed anything!

Thanks, nice to hear that my settings are good. FYI the SATA drive was an ext SATA disk with only data, not bootable. I'm not going to change anything more. However the Sharkoon had a USB connection too that I had to use when my system recovery with Norton disk recovery disc. But the last time was already a long time and now I have True Image as a backup utility.

    But end good all good.

Thanks again for your support in this matter.

  • Desktop Dell XPS 8500 - Raid config does not

    All-

I received my new 8500 a few weeks ago '' that came with only (1) 2 TB HARD drive which has been loaded with the W8.  For the last week or two, I was setup with additional drives / cables / etc.

So now I have a 120 GB SSD that I use for the primary HARD drive I rebooted W8 on (due to the demand of the reinstallation discs) and also bought an identical 2 TB Seagate drive to set up a Raid 1 (mirror) configuration.

So inside it is connected like this:

SSD 120 (main OS drive) connected to the Sata port 0

DVD player - connected to port Sata 1 (white block... "I think that his port 1 but on the bios, he said port 5?)

2 TB HDD - connected to the Sata 2 port (second of the card)

2 TB HDD - connected to the Sata 3 port (again on the second series of the map)

I am eager to have both drives of 2 TB for the storage of data and when I record something on the first disc of 2 TB, I want that this mirror to the second disc of 2 TB for backups.  I want to keep the 120 GB SSD for just the OS and applications I can load later.

Now, everything looks fine on the disk management.  I have my main drive C: (120 GB SSD) / one of my 2 TB like H: / and the other 2 TB in M:

Everything has been initialized, configured, etc. under disk management (allocated all the space for the to 2 discs)

So I read tons of discussions and documents online and I know how you go into the BIOS and change Sata from AHCI RAID option.  When I do this I select to save changes and exit, and the pc tries to start up... gets to the Dell Logo and then fails.  He opted for the stop and restart and new come to the same part and stops.  She continues to do so until I go into the BIOS and change back the settings of Raid AHCI save / quit and it starts right in the operating system?

Not sure what the heck happens... any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you

    JackShack-

Just wanted to report and let you know that everything was fine.  I've initialized, created a partition, did a quick format and everything is visible in 'My Computer' as expected.

Before closing this thread, I just wanted to take your brain with some questions about the current configuration:

    1. whenever I have restart / reboot the pc, the RAID ROM or whatever the splash screen appears for a few seconds and I can't see where I configured my readers and everything looks good, then it goes into start the OS?  I guess it's normal to have the pc to start with this config RAID ROM because I configured the RAID parameters?

    2. in the BIOS to get the RAID set, I had to change settings such as "Secure Boot" (from activate to disable) and "Start Mode" (from UEFI to Legacy).  I guess these are the "required" settings for RAID work on the pc and I would like to leave them alone?

    3. when I boot up the OS and I go to the management of these two disks or workstation (1) only one of my drives of 2 TB arises (I know it is because I have RAID configured in RAID 1, so since it is mirroring its only showing a single disc.)  BUT how do I know in my mind that my data are successfully copy through two drives if only one shows?  I just take it for granted that everything is working as intended, or is it possible to see the data on both drives?  Just curious...

In any case, I think that's it.  I just wanted to say with real sincerity that I really appreciate your patience and all your advice and guidance while trying to get RAID configured on this computer.

    Thanks again!

  • Adding disks to update 2 ESX 3.5 Server

    Hello

I added 2 extra disks(300GB) to our server ESX 3.5 Update 2 (use local storage on the server), but the ESX Server is not picking up these extra drives like all, I did re-scanner but does not collect these discs.  The server we have is a Dell PowerEdge2950.  Could some please advise correct how to add additional disks to the ESX Server.

    Thank you

You will most likely find the documentation for the specific RAID controller, use the DELL web page. Usually, it's as easy to enter in BIOS RAID controllers, while the host starts, creating a RAID set of new unused disks and configuration of a logical volume (DELL so-called virtual disks in their documentation) on the RAID.

  • Good size of disk RAID 1 for Time Machine

I have a Mac Mini with a Fusion 1 TB drive. What is the recommended size for a backup drive in a RAID 1 using Time Machine configuration?

The general consensus is that player TM (or readers in your case) should be twice the size of Mac disk.

    Take a look on > http://pondini.org/TM/1.html

and then for Intel RAID > http://pondini.org/TM/2.html

I use a mixed bag of backups, relying more on several clones CarbonCopyCloner as Time Machine for two reasons.

    1. If you have no problem with boot drive, you can start a CCC clone and continue working.

    2. it is faster and easier to restore from a clone of the CCC, rather than re - install OS X and then restore data from TM.

  • Z220 CMT: firmware Win 8 factory 7 and install new boot disks (RAID 1)

My Z220 came with the copy of Win 7 Pro/64-bit factory-loaded, lowered to win 8. The supplied HD is just a Seagate 500 MB to 6 MB/s SATA drive.

I want to change my boot disks for a pair of WD series RE 1 TB disks in a RAID1 configuration.

The 220 came with a series of restore disks: disks of recovery system 1,2 and 3 for Win 7 and a DVD of recovery Driver for WIn7 and WIn8, as long as the DVD of the operating system - Windows 8 Pro.

So, if I install the pair of RAID array using the Intel RAID software, can I then use CD Win7 game to restore the Win7 system to the new RAID array? Is there a potential problem of activation here?

My other idea was to use Clonezilla to clone the current Win7 system on the RAID array, but I don't know if it will work, as the discs in question are not the same...

If you look at your partitions on the disk HP of the computer/manage/storage/disk management you should see a hidden partition which you can draw the active OS itself and also to make an installation USB or CD/DVD set.  But you already have those in hand, I believe.

The restore thing can be confusing.  What I would do, is get a stunt or set of disks drive and start experimenting.  One of the disks is an "Activator" disc which you start with, and it gives you instructions as you go along with a clean installation, including installation RAID or simple installation on hard/SSD options.  Just keep your 500 GB out of the workstation and work with the readers of stunt.  For those, I liked the 80 GB WD Velociraptors... two correspondent off eBay are cheap, and they are quick to reformat/load/erase.  It will start to make sense fairly quickly.  For RAID works, you can experiment on 2 160 GB drives, but a full install of W7 with Office 2007 is less than 45 GB.  You just start from this first optical disc and start digging.

The thing about the COA... When you perform a clean discs HP restore, as if your HP hard drive has failed, the process puts on a HP OEM COA serial number that is different from what is on your COA sticker.  For example, you can clone a facility and it will work on an another Z220 CMT without activation.  It checks only the BIOS of the workstation to make sure that it is a legal installation.  If you try the same thing with a W7Pro64 OEM System Builder build the clone will work but will recognize that this isn't the same job that it has been installed on original and you give a few days to feed another series of COA number.

A clone must come from the installation of restore HP OEM with the internal controls of HP and OEM HP serial number to make it work on another box without activation problems.  Stick to right side of things and you'll be fine.

Leave in the Raid Controller, what is the status of the table? In addition, was the raid 1 initialized after being created? If this isn't the case, then, who will have to be done before you try to install.

If you download this and start on the lifecycle controller (F10) and then select deploy BONES, load these files there and proceed with the installation of the OS.

  • XPS9100 disk RAID failure

One of the drives of 500 GB SATA 150 7200 RPM RAID is dead.   When starting, I get a message "ARRAY0" degraded and takes forever to start up.   Using the configuration of F2 at startup option SATA2 is not detected and SATA3 shows a hard drive.   I guess that SATA2 is the defective drive and HDD1 in the chassis.   What is the procedure to replace the drive with a new drive?

What type of RAID?  If you have a table striped, RAID 0, you must save any data you want to stay on an external, remove the RAID (assuming you want to keep the player which is ok), replace the defective disk, create a new RAID 0 and perform a manual of your operating system and all applications that you want to use.

If the RAID is RAID 1, a mirror, you can recover by replacing the disc which is a failure and the RAID ROM will rebuild the table using the right disk.

If you need additional help, please reply.

  • Addind disk RAID 5

    Hi all

I have a question for you: I have 1 poweredge R720 with seven discs. Four are in RAID 5 (installation of the OS), while three discs are not in RAID. I would like to add that 3 disks for raid 5 without loss of data. This operation is possible?

    Thank you

    See you soon

    Woz

Yes. This can be directly using OMSA (storage, virtual disks, reconfigures) or offline to the utility BIOS CTRL-R for PERC.

  • Hard time adding disks of SCSI logical unit number

    Hello

I have an Adaptec 4805SAS which I am aware is not on the HCL supported. Attached to this unit, I have a 8 disks SAS range. When I create a matrix RAID 5 the total area is about 1 TB.

I tried to add this as a data store for the storage of data. We have databases of SQL server running on this box of ESXi 5.0 and I would use it as a separate device for the storage of data and possibly a different device to the log files.

Initially, I created two tables, and they were properly detected when it is installed ESXi 5.0.

When I tried to copy or move a file on disk vmdk to one of these drives, the device has become unavailable.

We then updated the firmware on the card and tried to make a unique picture of a total amount of space on the disks. We could add this table after several attempts.

The wizard error message is as follows:
An error occured during host configuration. See the error stack for details on the cause of this problem.

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.CreateVmfsDatastore" for object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi "xx.xx.xx.xx" failed.
Operation failed, diagnostics report:  Unable to create Filesystem, please see VMkernel log for more details: No such device or address

This is one of many similar error messages that we are receiving for this device.

I also tried to SSH into the ESXi server and issue a partedUtil command to list devices, then create a partition to which I could mount.

The output I get from that is:

    ~ # partedUtil setptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba2:C0:T0:L0" gpt "1 128 2009900000 AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8 128"

    ~ # partedUtil delete "/vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba2:C0:T0:L0" 1
Error: Unable to open /dev/disks/mpx.vmhba2:C0:T0:L0 - unrecognised disk label.

    ~ # ls/vmfs/devices/drives.

    I have two fundamental questions:

-The log file and behaviors exposed means that the controller card is simply not supported?

-If the card is supported, how can I get this table to become a useful data store. I read somewhere that you need to reinstall ESXi?

Nothing we can do here since the built-in and custom drivers do not support the device.

I recommend you to go there and change the map located in HCL.

Before that, you can try to contact VMware technical support once. Their engineering team can work to a driver if many customers is affected by this issue.
