Re-create a virtual disk (RAID 1) of two existing drives

After several power outages, my server Dell PowerEdge T110 ii starts plu. The virtual disk (RAID 1) has disappeared, but the two physical disks are still visible and a State of readiness.

Is it possible to create a virtual disk Raid1 of two existing disk which was composed the original virtual disk without losing any data?

If this is not possible, is there a way to recover the data (image) and re - create a new virtual disk?

I hope someone can help me.

I don't think, because the process would have initialized the disc, which formats.

When the script runs I get error: unable to create the virtual disk: fault. RestrictedVersion.summary

Can someone tell me why please.  Im trying to create a disk of 20 GB with adapter free with eagerzeroedthick on my internal called storage, (no subdirectory).

The file system is THAT VMFS 3.33 maximum file size is 256 GB.  The block size is 1 MB.  If it is the block size that is the problem how can I easily change?

It's in a laboratory, not a production environment.  I need the flag eagerzeroedthick like Im trying to create a passive active cluster node MSCS 2 on a single physical node with 2 machines VMS.

    Thank you.

If you use the free version of ESXi (U4 and later versions), access to tools like the VIMA API are read-only.

  • Reduce the size of the virtual disk RAID 5

I have Windows Server 2003 is installed on a virtual disk PERC H700 RAID-5. Total size of the disk is 5.5 TB. The problem is that WinServer 2003 cannot use the disk due to the MBR 2 TB limit (and I can't convert to GPT without destroy all partitions, which is what I try to avoid). Since 3.5 TB of drive space is unallocated (and reconciliations), is there a way to reduce the size of the virtual disk to remove this space which can not be used anyway? Then, I could by using the remaining capacity to create a new virtual disk that can be set up as GPT and access the space through it (or two new virtual drives 2 TB and 1.5 TB in size). I know that you can expand a virtual disk, but you can a shrink?

No, you can develop most of the virtual drives, but you will not be able to reduce them.

You will have to start on this subject, creating a VD less than 2 TB for boot/OS disk, then the rest can be used in an another VD.

  • Cannot create a virtual disk existing; problem with files hard?

Yes... This is a recurring problem since mid-December, and we finally decided to rebuild our vCenter on another host server.  I went and did the things of the new Virtual Machine and has "custom", so that I can browse and recover files hard and * _1.vmdk of our SAN for discs.

Now, this large all worked Friday.  I just today... and it doesn't work.  D: drive (* _1.vmdk) disappeared, and I can't either remote on the server.  I can't vSphere, nothing!

Then... we rebuild, changing the name of the server that we just built _old after stopping.

When I go to recover files hard again, they are changed...?  I can't explain it!  I've attached a screenshot of what I take everything.

Now... there at - it a way to solve this problem?  And if not, is it possible to find the information that was in these folders to manage our environment?

    Help?

What you're saying gives me a really bad feeling.

Sorry about that, I really want to tell you something more encouraging, but...

Assuming that the snapshot you posted shows the old vCenter server folder, you can see that there are no configuration (.vmx) file more. I can tell you with certainty if the virtual machine has been removed (you can check the tasks and events) or if for example a backup application attempted to do his work but because of the virtual disks had reused problem!

If you still want to use the existing virtual disks, you must move them to the folder of the new virtual machine in order to avoid any confusion.

  • Add a new virtual disk to a very critical existing VM

    Hi all,

My question is very simple. I have to add a new virtual disk to an existing Windows Server 2008 Standard virtual machine (we use vSphere 5). This machine

is very critical, because it is the server of the company files. Is there a risk to add the new virtual disk on the virtual computer? Is it better to add it with the virtual machine died, or can I also in the virtual machine running without risk? I tried with a virtual test machine and everything works fine and I know to be very paranoid, but in this moment I still feel a great responsibility on me.

    Thank you all.

There is nothing wrong by adding a disk to a virtual machine, it is HOT add, that is the advantage of the SCSI layer. VMDK all use a virtual scsi controller and it is hot add capable. SO just, add it and partition.

  • Cloning of a virtual disk before developing a RAID 5 system

    Hi all

My apologies if this has been answered before, or there is a simple solution that I have not yet met.

I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 with a Perc 6 / i RAID controller. I'll use OMSA to reconfigure a virtual disk RAID 5 I want to increase the storage of data on this drive, but I would like to the VD to backup before you go ahead and commit to reconfigure the disk (data stored on the VD is critical and I don't want anything to go wrong when the reconfiguration and lose all data).

I have the RAID 5 VD on 4 discs and filled the other empty bays 4 identical drives and created a new VD on these new readers. Is it possible that I can use the BIOS RAID configuration or the OMSA to everything from the original to the new VD VD clone, or do I need a third party software?

No, you need some sort of backup and imaging software.

  • question about creating virtual disks on my MD3220i

I create a virtual disk where I put a SQL Server and it asks me to

Choose the type of virtual disk IO characteristics. The file system (typical), database, multimedia and Custom options.

I think the selection of data because it is a SQL Server. However I'm not sure because I have not much of

Being that the VD will be strictly for SQL, then you can go ahead and select the database option. Any other time, you must select the typical option. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Break your table into smaller pieces. ESX requires a minimum of about 10 GB, even if you can make bigger it. ESXi requires only 1 GB. Data warehouses may not be less than 2 TB. You may be able to use virtual disks raid based to break the table.

  • initializing virtual disks

I have a powervault MD1000 (Bay raid storage) connected to a backup server. It is set up with 3 virtual drives that each use 2 terabytes of storage in RAID 5 from our range of 8 physical disks.

I had to replace two of the physical drives, and I need to initialize my virtual disks. In the Perc 6/E management screen VD, I can select the virtual disks (that show in red) and press F2 to display the operations, but the initialization button is dimmed and I can't select it. In the PD management screen, the new drives show as ready.

How do I initialize my virtual drives? Should I delete them and create new virtual disks? It's my first time doing this, so please bear with me. Any help would be appreciated.

I just updated the firmware of the 6th Perc to version 6.3.3 - 0002, which has a rep to support Dell recommended that I do, if this is useful.

After you remove virtual drives, I was able to create a new virtual disk and initialize it. It seems that I just have to build the virtual disks from scratch.

    Thank you for your time.

  • OpenManage for VMWare ESXi has no possibility of tasks of virtual disk

OMSA v 7.1 and 7.2 for Windows (and earlier versions) allow the user to perform many tasks on virtual disks, including reconfiguring - expand a RAID array with a new drive.

This is not true for managing open for VMWare ESXi - although you can monitor the status of the RAID and disks with the browser of the OMSA interface type, you cannot perform tasks - can not even make a high beam Flash.

It is a huge problem, because the PERC controllers (H700 and H800, for example) don't allow you to develop virtual using hard drives not Dell disks when you try this during startup in the bios.  (These controllers only allows you to create new virtual disks using drives not Dell).

This test was conducted using the latest firmware (12.10.4 - 0001 A10) and drivers for the H700 and H800 and multi-server r610 ESXi 5.1.

Other people with VMWare have been affected by the present?  The only solution is to have two player networks connected to the computer, and create a simple Windows with OMSA, boot in Windows Server to expand the table using OMSA for Windows.

I would be interested in the comments of others, including those of Dell.  We spent hours on the phone with Dell; This seems to be the only solution.  (Yes, Dell released a firmware version last year that has ceased blocking non Dell readers, but it only works for the creation of a new virtual disk, do not expanding one existing).

Yes.  It came through a discussion in the Dell | Servers | Discussion of the RAID community.

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20263442.aspx

There is a CD bootable linux called OMSA Live that you download from PowerEdge (linux OS) systems management.

This OMSA PERC H700 and H800 control and allows you to do everything.  When you reconfigure the RAID and the PERC card starts the reconstruction, although it seems risky, you can restart under VMware and the reconstruction of the RAID continues on.  And you can analyze with OMSA for VMware.

  • large partition or make mutiple small virtual disk virtual disk

I have a server that is running vmware server and using windows server 2008 as a host operating system. I need to set up two machines vitrual which will act as a file server and database server.

I have a RAID 5 with the host using 3 were leaving. one for the host, one for file server and the other for the database server. I would like to know what is the best for proformace.  Do I have to create a virtual disk of 1 TB and let the guest operating system put in place three partition for the file server or should I create 3 small virtal drive and let the guest operating system to use all the space on the small virtual disk 3. the reason why I need 3 partiton is due to a mapping application that is 500 GB and we can only save. Therefore a partition for it because our backup software backs up only the partitions.

the database server will be a p2v and I think there just a single partition.

With a single RAID set on the host computer, you can choose either way, avoid any difference in performance. However, I'd probably go with 3 virtual drives. This way you can - if it takes more performance disc - add for example an addition RAID 1 go up and turn the virtual disk of db the extra RAID to set.

  • Acer Aspire V5 - 572G windows update, net and virtual disk problems.

So I installed w7 x 64 ultimate on my laptop and notiiced windows update does not work. It shows that he can not connet to the server. After trying to fix it I discovered that I need to install net framework, which I tried, but he also failed because when I download the framework and before I press on install it shows me how much to download and it is 0. After I press on install it loads a little and it is said that he was not successful. Also tried to download some programs, such as driverpack, drivers search for and he found this lack gcdbusdevice and dcbusdevice im. When I tried downlaoding them, they seem not to exist. And when I try to install daemon tools or some simillar programs, it will fail to install, or fails to create a virtual disk, and after that the laptop can not stop lights. I have to use the restore point, and then he turns then on.

So yes, some advice or help would be nice, thank you.

    Please see this link:

There are no drivers Windows 7 for the V5 - 572G on our page drivers.

We don't support Windows 7 on this model.

  • How can I remove a virtual disk partition?

Well, basically, I was using the program - Ramdisk, and it takes little memory your just RAM and transforms a partition you can store things in, or use it as a hard drive. But, now, I think he's using for many and I would remove it. I used 400 MB of ram, so now it is used. I went to computer management, went to the partition and delete the volume. Now, he says: 5 - base 400 MB drive online, but on the side, where it shows the volume actually score or what ever, it says 400 MB not allocated.

So now I have 400 MB of ram m unallocated, and I'm trying to find a way to get it back in my ram used! Any help would be greatly please

You would need to reverse the process used to create the virtual disk - uninstall the software used to create, or reverse the settings that you have invoked in Windows to create, as the case may be.  Just delete the disk partition RAM does not remove it from memory.
