Adding new storage SAN to ESX 4.1 - same LUN ID is.

I got 6 new Hitachi SAN LUNS to 500 GB a piece to add to my ESX 4.1 cluster.  The new LUNS have LUN ID that already exists in the cluster.  In other words, the new LUN IDS are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I already have these LUN ID in the cluster.  They range from LUN0 to LUN48.  Is it OK to add those LUNS with the same ID?  Or is it the 49-54 LUNS?

Thank you.

In your case, his eyes already exist LUNS and LUN newly mapped are different table.

Should not be any problem because naa id would be different, but its good to have different since we usually draw the vmhba C0:T0:L0 lun.

    VCDDB - SQL

    I created the environment with two profiles of storage for the first time and it's work well (the storage profile created before I joined the vCenter on the VCD)

    I created tags and he attributed to the data store and I see the new VM storage through the vSphere web client policy.

    I can also see VMS on the VCDDB the dbo.storage_profile_inv the new storage policy table and when I create new provider TDC I can't.

    Hello and welcome to the forums.

    The maximum volume size is 2 TB - 512 bytes.  It is documented in KB 3371739 - you will need to carve up this storage in an appropriate manner.

  • How to move VMS to new storage AND new hosts

    Hello

    I'm having a hard time find, how can I move all the VMS NFS storage to a new storage iscsi (SAN HP). We are also the introduction of new material for guests, so throughout that this is an entirely new environment of vCenter (also from vSphere 4.1 to 5.5). My first thought was to attach new storage to the old hosts. Then do a migration of storage, one for a while (off voltage machines), remove the virtual machine from the old vCenter and then add them to the new environment of vCenter. But we have exhausted all NICs on the hosts of old, so I can't join the new storage, and I can't share a vmkernel for iscsi and nfs port.

    You have any suggestions how I can address the issue?

    It would work if you are very good to have downtime to your virtual machine.

    If you incur no downtime, you can try to install the same set of ESX (i) version on a few new series of servers (for example 10 points on 50 new servers) and add them to the old CR and proceed step by step below

    -Configure the old NFS storage on new set of servers

    -Migrate (vMotion) all VMS on old NFS to the new set of servers

    -Remove all the new set of VC servers

    -Add the same set of servers (that have been migrated from VM) to new VC

    -Migrate all virtual machines to the new storage and then upgrade your new set of servers

    In my view, this way you can avoid having a downtime for your virtual machine.

  • Storage SAN (data store) cannot be seen by guests

    Hi all

    I have a strange problem with a newly added SAN (LUN) storage device.

    I have 3 hosts running with a shared data store (SAN) which works very well. Now I have a new machine SAN shared connected to all guests, but when I "add storage" on host1 and refresh the storage to other hosts (Setup - & gt; storage - & gt; discount), I can see the data store created only on host1 and host3. When I choose 'add a storage' on host2 it destroyes the data store created and create a new one that is visible to host2.

    I tried several times to add and refreshment, but the same results come once again.

    Any help would be appreciated

    It would take a while for these hosts another to see the new store of data created on another host. How end restart your host 2?

  • Add new storage "opération TimedOut" with RDM LUN on host. Pls Help

    Hello

    Installation program:

    4 ESX 3.5 hosts each with 2 HBA adapter connected to the HP MSA1000.

    Question:

    I set up MSCS SQL 2000 with RDM through host, MSCS failover without problem, performance wise is not a problem at all too. But the problem is that if the MSCS SQL resource is managed by the Active virtual machine that is running on host1, I can navigate to storage / adding LUNs, set in shape of new LUN with no problems.

    If I want to add new storage on the other host "host2" I received the error "Tor time to ask"is it because of the resource ROW being busy serving the machine virtual active it is why the host not allowing do not change with the addition of new storage?

    Guests see these LUNs. I can add the data store or to do a new analysis also long the LUNS are not presented to the host. Also I can browse the data store, able to see the addition of Storge Wizard when adding new

    Data store and make a new analysis only on the host where the operation of the active node. Suppose the preseneted RDM LUN on host1 and host2 and VM SQL running on host1, I can only browse the data warehouses, a new analysis and add new storge to this host. I can't do the same thing with

    hosts2.

    But if I take these "RDM LUN" LUNS in host2, host3 and host4. I can do a rescan, adding other LUNS as the RDM presented to the virtual machine, able to see the add storage wizard.

    I had similar questions to those two problems here where I couldn't add a data store as he would expire and I got the long startup time. I also use RDM which I use for MSCS in the whole of boxes 2. Here's a quote from my previous post in which I found a response that helped me. Changingthe SCSI retry time increased my boot time and allowed me to add one more time without the question of the time-out, data warehouses.

    Response to previous Post:

    I did some research and I think I've made some progress. I found that I get lots of SCSI errors in the VMkernel newspaper. I did some more research and found out that I can change the time retrying SCSI 80 to 10 and it has done wonders for my time to reboot. Now, instead of taking 20 minutes to start, it takes less than 5 minutes now. Much better. I made the change in the host-> advance-> SCSI--> SCSI configuration try again. 80 a the default and 10A was suggested as being a good value. It helped and I will keep an eye on what can make the effect, but so far it has helped with startup times.

  • Move the virtual machines to new storage device

    I recently added a storage IBM DS3200 SAS device to my VMware ESX 3.5 server.  I am running 6 VMs locally on the server and I would like to move the virtual machines to the new storage device.  I have formatted disks and the ESX Server sees.  What is the best way to move the virtual machines that currently reside locally on the external storage device?

  • SAN in ESX failover

    Hi all

    I have a complicated setup that I don't really know the answer.

    Please see the attached diagram.

    Asuming he House 3 vSphere x 5 and it has installed in the host 3 vSphere VM.

    Now our intended client is in other words that there is a failure of vSphere host, be it a sudden failure or network outage, how fast can fail over to the other server vSphere vCenter? The customer wanted < 1s failover and vCenter must turns on the virtual machine in another host vSphere automatically to the State of the system just before failure of vSphere host and the features of the virtual machine should not be compromised. There is no NLB cluster between virtual machines.

    Another requirement, it was that they wanted same SAN failover on the same site. The scenario is that if the primary SAN failed, the secondary SAN should automatically pass as the active node and vSphere must be able to point the vmdk file to the new active SAN storage.

    With my limited knowledge, I know not can vSphere or any SAN hardware can do.

    Can someone enlighten me if this can be done by vSphere?

    Thank you.

    > Even a power failure sudden or network failure, VMware will be able to start the server (ignore the 1 s thingy for now) back to the last State before failure physical vSphere?

    When HA is used, it is essentially like pulling the plug on a physical host and start up.  Anything written to disk will be there, but whatever it is purely in memory will be gone.

    I don't have much experience with EMC and HP Lefthand SAN allows 2 without mirror and create a virtual SAN.  Hosts connect to the address the SAN cluster virtual IP and data are always synchronized between both nodes.  If one goes down, vSphere continues to operate as if nothing had happened.

  • Migration to new storage ASM

    Oracle 11G R2 RAC with ASM on Solaris 10

    Just do my due diligence to prepare material migration of storage of StorageTek (RAID 5) for NetApp (RAID 6) with more space

    Anyone has any experience of migration to new hardware for storage with different RAID types when you use ASM? I guess there is no problem of hardware compatibility. Is it possible to connect the new storage to the servers and create new ASM disks groups, move data to the new disk groups files and then remove the old storage? Or should I take a RMAN backup and then restore it on the new storage?

    Yes, but remember that you don't want to leave all as unpaired LUN in the same diskgroup permanently, as ASM blindly assumes that all LUNS have the same capabilities and balances Allocation units (AUs) is based on this assumption.

    If you break rebalance ASM, add a lot of new LUNS in an existing diskgroup and mark all old LUNS to fall once evacuated, then resume the rebalancing, the end result will be all new LUNS that are all also hitched. Just by adding a few new LUNS leaving some old would produce suboptimal performance.

    If you go to the approach of separate ASM diskgroup, you have the luxury to migrate your files (if desired) iteratively given ASM manages two independent disk groups.

    Don't forget to assign points if you find my answers to be useful and accurate.

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

  • Data to be moved to the new storage array: ASM_POWER_LIMIT question

    DB version: 10.2.0.4
    Solaris operating system: 5.10
    Setup: 2 NŒUD RAC storage 2 TB of data in 4 LUNS (all 4 LUNs belong to a single storage group)

    We will replace our IBM 2 existing a new 4 TB storage array to Sun Storagetek.

    That's what I decided to do after a few R & D.

    Below are the steps that I've prepared based ML Note: 557348.1

    Create 4 LUNs on the new storage, and then create a test using Diskgroup
    SQL> CREATE DISKGROUP TEST EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY DISK '/rdsk/c0t1s1', '/rdsk/c0t1s2', '/rdsk/c0t1s3', '/rdsk/c0t1s4';
    Check if the diskgroup is created and mounted:
    SQL> SELECT STATE, NAME FROM V$ASM_DISKGROUP;
    If so, then manually mount on other instances of ASM:
    SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP TEST MOUNT;
    SQL> SELECT STATE, NAME FROM V$ASM_DISKGROUP;
    If the previous steps were successful and the diskgroup TEST can be mounted with success (on each ASM instance), and then drop the diskgroup TEST as follows:
    SQL> alter diskgroup test dismount; --(from all the ASM instances, except from one).

    SQL> DROP DISKGROUP TEST; --(from the ASM instance, which the diskgroup is still mounted).
    Records of candidate is ready to be added to the desired diskgroup:
    SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP <my production diskgroup> ADD DISK '/rdsk/c0ts1', '/rdsk/c0t1s2', '/rdsk/c0t1s3', '/rdsk/c0t1s4';
    My question:
    Since involved LUNS are of large size, and rebalancing would make the command Add DRIVE slower. Right?
    I am thinking of setting the ASM_POWER_LIMIT to 0 until I started to do this and later new rever to 1. Is this a good approach?

    Hello

    My question:
    Since involved LUNS are of large size, and rebalancing would make the command Add DRIVE slower. Right?

    No, when you run the command ' add/drop disc' ASM reads and writes only metadata in the headers of all asmdisks (belonging to the diskgroup) and the guest is released.
    The complete rebalancing of the data process runs in the background.

    The fact that the guest to be released does not mean that the operation has ended. You need to check on the V$ ASM_DISKS (GROUP_NUMBER, PATH, HEADER_STATUS, NAME) to determine if you can remove the disks to the HOST.

    see this example (no difference at the time of change of power of rebalancing)

    ===================================================

    SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP DG_DATA
            ADD DISK '/dev/oracleasm/disks/ASM_VOL'
            DROP DISK DG_DATA_0000
    REBALANCE POWER 0;

    Diskgroup altered.

    Elapsed: 00:00:07.90

    ====================================================
    SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP DG_DATA
            ADD DISK '/dev/oracleasm/disks/DISK01'
            DROP DISK DG_DATA_0001
    REBALANCE POWER 5;

    Diskgroup altered.

    Elapsed: 00:00:08.21

    I am thinking of setting the ASM_POWER_LIMIT to 0 until I started to do this and later new rever to 1. Is this a good approach?

    You must know that the rebalancing will take place when there is a change of configuration diskgroup.
    Be careful, affecting the ASM_POWER_LIMIT 0 can let the diskgroup in a State of imbalance or unbalanced. (I do not recommend this)

    My recommendation:

    (* 1) save all your databases and valid backup (always required to protect your data). *

    You NEED to check the note below before add your ASMDISK.
    * Block Corruption in ASM while that balance [ID 1098453.1] *.

    2) run in two steps

    alter diskgroup  add disks  rebalance power x;
    alter diskgroup  drop disks  rebalance power x;

    Or Execute in a single step. (My favorite)
    Alternatively, we can run add disk & drop drive statements in a single operation, in what way that a rebalancing operation will be launched.

    alter diskgroup
     add disk
     drop disk
    rebalance power 9;

    Wait until the end of the operation of rebalancing.
    You can follow the process of rebalancing using the following queries:

    SELECT  NAME,
         PATH,
         HEADER_STATUS,
         ROUND(TOTAL_MB/1024)  TOTAL_GB,
          ROUND( FREE_MB/1024) FREE_GB,
         ROUND((TOTAL_MB-FREE_MB)/1024) TOTAL_USED_GB
    FROM V$ASM_DISK
    WHERE GROUP_NUMBER= (SELECT GROUP_NUMBER FROM
         V$ASM_DISKGROUP WHERE NAME='DG_DATA');

    select * from v$asm_operation;

    select * from gv$asm_operation;

    select      NAME,
         ROUND(TOTAL_MB/1024)  TOTAL_GB,
         ROUND( FREE_MB/1024) FREE_GB,
         ROUND((TOTAL_MB-FREE_MB)/1024) TOTAL_USED_GB,
         UNBALANCED
    FROM V$ASM_DISKGROUP;

    Kind regards

    Recently, a new storage group was created on the mail server and a mailbox has been moved from the first group of storage to the new storage group. The other thing to do is to restart the AvMsgStoreMonitor service; But wait after hours. A reboot will do the same.

    Try to remove the UpperFilters value. by following these steps:

    Copy and paste the following text in Notepad and save to a .reg file (save with the .reg extension and give a name like fixcd.reg):

    First create a system restore point, and then double-click the saved .reg file, add to the registry and restart the computer.
