Adobe Reader - ongoing vulnerabilities - embarrassing

It's just annoying that Adobe keep releasing products with so many security vulnerabilities.  The most recent vulnerability in 9.1, our more than 5000 employees organized will never use your product again.  In addition, the news spread quickly on all vulnerabilities in Adobe and soon or later nobody will use or switch to another solution.

In my opinion, the only thing that developers should never work again on in Adobe Reader is safety!  We don't have no need of new features - all users want to do are just displaying PDF files!  This should not be a difficult product to get, and there is no need to be 138 MB to install.

I understand is it's an incredibly complex to ensure as a browser, e-mail client or Web application.  But it's just a program for a simple goal - the viewing of PDF files!  Focus all efforts on securing the product and nothing else.  There is no excuse for another vulnerability in Adobe.

I'm a software engineer and understand that programmers are human, , but repeated defects in your software is simply annoying!

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/02/hackers_exploiting_adobe_reade.html

http://www.theregister.co.UK/2009/04/28/adobe_reader_flaw/

I could spend hours posting links on all of the previous flaws, but I don't have the time.

In the future to focus on safety in your product and nothing else whatsoever!

If possible, I would like to know who is specifically responsible for the last fault.  They should probably be fired.

We must begin to show our finger specific programmers who are at fault to fix vulnerabilities and have a database to search for the history of vulnerabilities.  It is perhaps the only thing we can do to make people enough care in the design of secure software.

It is a source of embarrassment and programmers of Adobe should be ashamed.

The question is, what will be the new vulnerability in the next "patched" Adobe version!

I completely agree... Problems of vulnerability have been plaguing this software since its basic steps.  Even some mediocre programmers can easily string together some codes and achieve a higher result.  Anyway, I can be described three ways while surfing the web a) avoid phishing, b) avoid the Trojans and c) avoid anything with adobe name

  • When I updated my Adobe Acrobat plug-ins it uninstalled Adobe Reader and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Can I use Adobe Reader instead?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Firefox said that my plugin Adobe Acrobat was outdated, so I've updated. It uninstalled my Adobe Reader Version 11.0.12.18 and replaced it with Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 2015.008.20082 DC. I did not like this program, and more I read there are still bugs in there. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled Adobe Reader Version 11.0.12.18. I went into the menu of options of Firefox under applications and changed the options Adobe to use Adobe Reader as the default application for PDF files. It is a safe choice, or should I leave Firefox dictate what PDF program I use? I am concerned about safety issues. Any opinions?

I think that your question has been answered mainly in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1079182

In my opinion, you can trust Adobe to keep the series XI Reader updated for awhile. It is completely safe is impossible to know, given that vulnerabilities are often discovered and kept secret.

  • Adobe Reader DC

Well, I'm sitting here being embarrassed and angry. I went in Firefox tools to check obsolete Add-ons and I saw that he had to update Adobe Reader plug-in. Stupidly, I just went through with the update of FF and ended with Adobe Reader DC. Does anyone else here have this version on their computer? He eventually remove my old version of Adobe Reader.

I did go to security settings and make sure that he was not 'anonymous' call home with my usage patterns. Would you recommend that I have uninstall and go back to the old plain Adobe Reader?

I really hate being so stupid after all these years to be so careful about the so-called updates!

Thanks for any info or make recommendations.

    Mary

I can confirm that using FF, by going to tools / modules / Plugins / check to see if it is up-to-date.

I am indeed was advised that the Adobe Reader PDF plug-in for Firefox and Netscape, version 11.0.11.18, is "out of date" - Despite this version which was installed just a week ago (May 12).

So there is no need to be embarrassed... you have nothing wrong nor dangerous here.   Best I can tell, it seems that DC is the 'new' version of the player... but I hope that others will be able to confirm this.

    ----------------------------

Look further on the Adobe site, I don't see the old / 'standard' offered here drive any where... they even offer a "MUI" (multi-Language) version 11.0, here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5507

that must immediately be updated to 11.0.11 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5909

Earn 10 being in beta, Adobe is probably not really doing the drive to work with her. • Adobe Reader XI (11.0.10) updated options and Firefox

    Hello

I checked to see if my Firefox plug ins were updated and has received a warning to plug my Adobe Reader is vulnerable and it updated. However, it lists the 'status' as 11.0.10.32 I think it's the latest version (Secunia PSI, which checks the lists of vulnerabilities my Adobe Reader as up-to-date with 11.0.10.32). When I try to update Adobe reader from the red button on Firefox plug in page check the update only version I'm offered by Adobe of Reader 10.1.4 English UK for Windows and downloading ends with a Setup error stating that I "already have a more functional product. This will be the XI player from Adobe (11.0.10.32) I know that I installed and Adobe Reader confirms that there is no update. I was going to download the Adobe Reader listed in the downloads updates, but there are two options listed: update Adobe Reader 11.0.10 multilingual (MUI) 35.5 MB and Adobe Reader 11.0.10 Installer updated of all languages 43 MB. I don't know what is the difference or use, and there is no indication in help > about Adobe Reader.

I'd appreciate it if someone could advise me on this problem and if I have the correct version and date of Adobe Reader and why Firefox says it's expired and I am only provided with a date for Adobe Reader version 10 (10.1.4)?  This is my first post in the Adobe forums and I have pretty basic computer skills and knowledge. Thank you.

The latest version for Vista is Player 10.1.13.  You need to download/install 10.1.4, and then upgrade to 10.1.13.

But Firefox can still think that it is an outdated version.

Due to different applications in the Organization we can change the behavior of opening pdf in Adobe Reader itself app. Sometimes PDF files should be opened in Internet Explorer (display PDF in browser).

After a few days, I found the cause of this problem.

One of our standard application plugin was causing this strange behavior of Internet Explorer.

Plugin for Adobe Reader, of course.

  • Not legible print Adobe Reader window

Adobe Reader (free) works fine until I want to print a document. For some years now, whenever I want to print the print window comes up looking like this:

    AdobeReader-Print.jpg

It occurred to me that my custom color scheme may have something to do with it (but note the text "8.5 x 11 inches" which appears) so I tried to change the theme to the Windows Classic. This results in the print window that looks like this:

    AdobeReader-Print2.jpg

Note the vertical scroll right bar... scrolling indicates more the print window, which has the same characteristics as what we see here.

When you use my normal diet color (custom) with my personal theme, the print window sometimes comes up looking like the 1st photo, sometimes as the second. I have not discerned any pattern or the reason why it shows once in one way and the other way again.

When two versions of the print window appears, press the key always print the document correctly. Similarly, if, in the first picture, if I click on the left button of the pair at the bottom right of the window it prints also. When it comes up looking like the second photo, I was never to find the 'Print' button and use the Enter key. Once again, but I start printing, the document prints as it should.

This happened for some time when I was with Windows XP (until Windows 7 is released) and continued, now that I am on Windows 7. I always keep the o/s updated with Service Packs and updates of Windows. Similarly, I keep readers updated and installed the last updated just before taking these screenshots. I have monitor 27 "2711 HP @ its native resolution of 1920 x 1080.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make the print readable window, I'd appreciate it. This has been an embarrassment for too long.

  • Adobe Reader XI will remain open.

I recently installed Adobe Reader XI. If I open the program directly or double-click a PDF file the results are identical. I briefly see the window of the empty player application, then it closes. I ran the repair function on panel without any positive result. Can someone tell me what is the problem and the solution? Thank you.

Pat, I downloaded and ran the clean utility, a then attempted to install the three versions of Adobe Reader available on the link you provided, uninstall and install necessary. I have experienced the same problem with all versions. I spoke to a colleague what was going on, and he told me reinstall Adobe Reader XI and try to start it. After you get the same result, he asked me to look at the event viewer. We have seen the entry below. I navigated to the C:\Program Files (x 86) folder \Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\ and double-click on the Eula.exe. It displays the end-user license agreement window, and I clicked on "accept". After doing this, I was able to start the drive without problem, and everything seems to work fine now. Pretty weird. In any case, I thought that I'll let you know in case it has provided useful information. It may be just a weirdism on my laptop. He woudn't will certainly be the first. It's a Lenovo Thinkpad and I've renamed a Stinkpad, for good reason. Thanks for your help and your professional expertise and let me know if there is anything else (newspapers, etc.) If you think that it would be useful or helpful.

  • I can't install Adobe Reader 10.1.04 on my Windows Vista computer

I was unable to install Adobe Reader on my laptop Toshiba 32-bit of Windows Vista (SP1) and it would be really grateful for the help.

Here is the error message I get:

Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\.api\AcroExch.Plugin\ShellNew. Check that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support team.

Here is a brief history of what I tried already:

    # 1 AdbeRdr1014_en_US.exe downloaded as stand-alone file several times from different servers and sites.

    # 2 uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.0

    # 3 Ran AdbeArCleaner.exe several times to remove ANY version of Acrobat or Reader perious.

    # 4 open each of my 4 browsers, the latest version of IE, Opera, Firefox and Chrome, looked for Plugins or Add Ons and deleted ALL associated Adobe apps except Flash.

    # 5 Open Control Panel, programs, versions searched and deleted ALL of Acro fast player or quick recorder.

    # 6 Ran Norton Utilities Registry Clean several times.

    # 7 when you try to install the 10.1.04 drive I had ALREADY received this error message:

Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\AcroExch.Document\Shell\Open\Command. Check that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support team.

However, after using the cleaning of Adobe tool, I had is no longer this error.

    # 8 I also disabled my A - V program over all attempts to install Kaspersky PURE 2.0.

The reason why I wanted to update to Adobe Reader 10 was that Kaspersky did a vulnerability check indicating:

    "Adobe Reader/Acrobat multiple vulnerabilities.

    See: http://www.SecureList.com/en/advisories/47133/?function=advisories & VN = 47133

Solution has been updated to version 10.1.2 (or higher).

Now, I can't open it. PDF files. I can't find the so-called Plugin that causes the installation to stop. The installation of the 10.1.04 reader happens to approximately 96% complete, then fails and restores.

    # 9 is there an easy solution, such as a tool that autyomatically will remove any corresponding registry key, or apply the correct administrative attributes for the registry keys? If this is not the case, can you please talk me through this step by step. I never been so confused or frustrated by an upgrade of the software, what I thought would be a simple task.

THANKS in advance for your help is very appreciated.

    See you soon,.

    These complex issues frequently occur?

No, not with Adobe Reader.   In fact, the Acrobat cleaning tool should have taken care of that.  But it's a question that I see from time to time in the forum of Flash Player.  Unfortunately this installer doesn't tell us what key is the origin of the problem.

    SubInACL:

    • Download and install from this link http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=23510 (the download page doesn't mention Vista, I installed it on Windows 7, so Vista shouldn't be a problem)
    • Download the attached file reset_ar10.bat and unzip it in the same folder as SubInACL is installed ('C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools' or ' C:\Program Files (x 86) \...) If you are on a 64-bit system)
    • Run the file to extract from reset_ar10.bat (I just noticed that there are not run as administrator from the context menu)

I will attach the reset_ar10.bat file, I get errors during the test.  I'll do another post when it's ready.
