  • Pavilion x 2: Windows product key Validation after hardware change (new SSD)

I have a Pavilion laptop x 2 with a 64 GB SSD.  It came with Windows 8.1 but he now works Windows 10 - of course.  I decided to upgrade the 256 GB SSD.  I bought the appropriate module (a Sandisk).  I recently contacted Windows support to inquire about the procedure to validate the OS once I did the material exchange.  I wasn't sure how it would work since my x 2 Pavilion has incorporated into BIOS product key.  Microsoft told me that because I was going to do a hardware change I would need a new product key (in other words my laptop current product key would be 'blocked').  I was able to recover the product key of my Pavilion x 2 (OEM and installed keys - what is the difference?).

Does anyone have experience in this field?  Once I have replace the SSD and perform a clean install Windows 10, will be the key to product embedded BIOS validate operating system or it will reject?  Since I'm NOT buying a HP SSD (with preloaded operating system) and that my x 2 Pavilion is now long out of warranty?  I really have to pay over a hundred dollars for a new Windows operating system license?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

    Francis

Parameters indicate that I have a digital right so with a bit of luck when I change the SSD and install Windows 10, the machine must validate without a qualm.  I tried to see if I could link my Validation of my Microsoft account but I did not have this option on my settings (although in the past when I re-install Windows 10, link validation of my Microsoft account operating system so I guess it works.)  Also, I guess I have the anniversary edition from my machine updated automatically.

If all else fails, I'll see how it goes after the SSD upgrade and if I have to deal with Microsoft.  I also agree with you that change the SSD (essentially the ' drive') is NOT a significant change in equipment and shall not impose a new product key, but then, nothing surprises me more.

Your tips were helpful and I thank you.

    HP Pavilion 15 Windows 8 e030eo-> 8.1 update process

HP support gave me the right explanation for this mess,
pointing to the direction of Microsoft heavily.
    It's the whole process:

The laptop unpacking and setting up.
Begin the installation of the updates of win8, 95 of them.
System starts to install, reboots and starts to undo the updates.
So I ran diagnostics from the BIOS, everything is OK
Restoration of the laptop to the factory via F11 settings
From updates again, only 5 at the time.
Many updates ended up with erros and MS-Its made were
loaded and run several times and restarts each time.
Finally, both even 20 updates were installed successfully.

With the help of Windows Store updated the system to Win 8.1.
But there is no way to enable that.

Support for HP asked me to restore the system by selecting
settings at the corner of right on the screen,
and selecting the update / restore-> restore (without
destroy the files users) sorry I use the Finnish language version
and do not know requires it English.
It took awhile, but finally the uo started system
    with windows 8.
Once again the disorder even with updates and through the win store to Win 8.1

This activation time managed automatically, and
    the system is running.

I noticed that during the update/restore treats windows
License number changed somehow to win 8.1 license.

It was a long and timely process, but according to HP support
It is the way in which Microsoft requires us to do.

You cannot install of XP OEM key on a retail disc.
If the disc is SP3, then you can install by using the default key and then use the product key update tool to change the key for your COST one.
If you can integrate SP3 into the current disc, it will still work.
If this isn't the case, then you need to find a disc OEM System Builder to do the installation.

    Hello

The product key of Windows 8 (I guess it was the operating system that came with your laptop) is integrated into the chip of your system BIOS. Even if the hard drive is replaced, the product key remains intact in the motherboard BIOS chip.

So, when you put the new hard drive & try to recover the Windows 8 operating system in your new drive, the OS will automatically activate of the product key in the BIOS chip. You don't have to do it manually.

But, in case you got a message to activate Windows 8, you will need to contact HP or Microsoft technical support in your region.

This problem can also occur if the Windows activation file is corrupted. I suggest you phone activation.

    1. press Windows + X key then click Run, and then type: slui.exe 4
    2. then press the ENTER"" key.
    3. Select your "country" in the list.
    4. choose the option "activate phone":
    http://support.Microsoft.com/GP/customer-service-phone-numbers
    5. stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

NOTE:  if your system came with Windows preinstalled 8 then you need to install Windows 8 of disc/partition recovery and then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

If you have installed Windows 8.1 OEM (bought separately) then the Windows 8 key delivered with the device will not work and you need to contact Microsoft to get an or activate.

    Hope this helps,

    Thank you

  • Invalid product key: Re-install WinXP Pro after crash of HD and replacement on the old computer.

After the hard disk crash and replacement on the old computer, reinstall Windows XP - Pro.

I have genuine WinXP Pro, with product key, etc. on the sticker on the computer.
Install does not accept the product key. Error: the product key is valid.
Several CAREFUL attempts, so I do not know as I type the key correctly.
New HARD drive is SATA (former was IDE), so need to massage WinXP to accept SATA install.
Set of installation is Windows XP Pro SP3, with SATA drivers (with n - Lite).
    Help!

When is the key being denied? -Keep in mind that there are "excluded" characters (for example, 0 and I etc.) and those that are very easily confused (8/B, 2/Z, etc.) and, if the answer is in the system rather than by the activation servers, it is likely that this is the problem.

I can only suggest that you keep plugging away with the product key update tool until you find the right key.

Try this instead and explain your situation to a live person.

1 / click on the Start button.

2 / in the Search box type: slui.exe 4 and press enter.

3 / in the find window available for activation phone number, select the nearest location where you lie in the location box. You can click the arrow to the right of the location box to expand your choice of venues.

4 / once you have selected your location, click Next.

5 / If the user account control box, click continue or, if you are not the administrator, type in the username and password for permission to continue.

6 / the window Activate Windows now will appear indicating the phone number you are dealing with a series of installation identification numbers.

7 / now compose the activation number is displayed on the screen. The phone number is free of charge (telephone), unless otherwise stated.

8 / you understand that, initially, the line of Activation is Automatic, so you will be asked to enter the numbers displayed on your screen using your telephone keypad.

9 / once the numbers entered via the keypad of your phone, the automated service will issue you with another set of numbers that you Type in the dialog box that is displayed on your computer screen.

10 / now you must follow the instructions issued by the automated service to activate your copy.

11 / if, after going through this process, the activation service informs you that the product cannot be activated and then DO NOT slam the phone down in rage. Rather STAY ON THE LINE and your call will be transferred to an Activation of the device, in other words, someone real who will help you to activate your copy of Windows Vista.

12 / I am aware that these steps can be a pain, but nine times out of ten, Activation is automatic and can be accomplished quite easily on the internet. This is the reason why the service is automated. It is true that sometimes the automatism cannot stop, and when this happens, you are put through to someone who can help you.
