Alienware 15 R2 SSD

I recently bought Alienware 15 R2. I've already replaced Hitachi 7200 RPM HARD drive on port SATA-3 with Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB SSD and performance is very good. Now I need to upgrade 250 GB SSD Toshiba SSD because she is not to score with IOPS / s writing very low the next Samsung 960 2 TB (EVO or Pro). I know he can. But my question is can I keep my Toshiba SSD also as boot drive while making new 960 2 TB of hard drive as boot drive. There are 2 slots for NVME SSD of the form M2 on R2 of Alienware.

On my previous Alienware 14 (version 2013) I had kept boot with OS disk 64 GB my removing of the Raid array, replacing the hard drive 7200 RPM SATA - 3 with Samsung 850 Evo 1 TB that had the program folder files and put on 7200 RPM disk HARD interface of withSATA-2 DVD player by removing the DVD which is not relevant in today's world of readers of the pen , for the 18 months wih past excellent performance...

Hello

It's totally doable. There are two slots, and all you have to do is to install a new, change the boot order and install Windows on the new drive. Then, you can format the old SSD and use it as a storage device.

  • Alienware 17 R2 SSD upgrade

    Hey all,.

So I understand that my willing R2 of 4 bays m2 and a single 2.5 I can use to upgrade with. I was wondering if I could use PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 PCIe interface SSD to fill 4 m2 berries I have available. For example, I was interested in getting this (Toshiba OCZ RD400 m2 512GB 3.0 PCI-Express x 4 MLC) but I'm stumbled upon a thread who says computers laptops Alienware 17 may only use SATA interfaces... If this is true, could work with any SATA SSD interface, as I can use the SATA 3?

If not, are there any other recommendations to decent SSD I could get that would fit in my laptop? Thank you in advance!

SATA interface means that it has limited to SATA 3 speeds. This means that a 2.0 and 3.0 will have the same limit based on the port speed. In addition, 4 slots, only 2 can be used.

    Hi all

I recently bought an SSD and want to install it in my alienare 15.  I've noticed a great video tutorial on youtube, so I need to know how to do it physically.

On the contrary, I want to know the best way to get a fresh install of windows on it?  I currently have alien respawn on a USB key, but I think it's just for the recovery, correct?

Dell or Alienware is there any utility that I can use to put on a USB key to install fresh windows 8.1 which also includes factory Alienware settings/software?

I can't find the answer anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • AlienWare 17 r3 upgrade options

Hey guys and girls. Sorry if you seen 1000's of these posts, but I looked and none seems solid.

I don't have a big budget so I can't buy test and buy another if this does not work, I tested research, updates in memory and storage work. I don't have the laptop but I still have my r1 but I want to buy everything before it is there, but it seems that everything has changed.

From what I understand, he has 1 slot x hdd, 2 x ssd and ram slots 2 m2

If they are tested as i's good I wanted some options for 2 SSD for the m2 for the 128 GB and another 500 GB (games 1 boot 1)

Also the modules of RAM 2 x 16 gb that works

I heard so many conflicting stories saying some work and some laptop bsod or get speeds of poor quality. So why I wanted your comments guys

If there is anything else I can to upgrade I don't know what would be great as well.

Thank you for your help in advance

you are right, the R3 17 has only two slots of m.2 ssd, but they are pci express x 4... which is really very fast if you add a basic ssd is samsung. the old alienware 17 R2 (previous) has 4 m2 but only sata speed. This laptop has 1-2.5 inch mechanical hard drive, which I eventually improve to a 2 TB ssd when the price goes down more. There are two slots for RAM and supported up to 32. I highly recommend the option panel of 4 k. 4 k Committee is breathtaking.

    I recommend

    1. 4 k Board

    2. each gpu is good, 980 M if you go to a lot of game.

    3. standard 1 TB hd, you can always add an ssd later. Alienware uses PM951 SSD, high speed but terrible write the write speed. Samsung is supposed to release 1 TB 950 pro, which has the writing/red crazy speed. If you have the patience, wait as the 961 series of samsung.

4 choose the wifi receiver intel 8260, the killer is rubbish.

5 RAM depends on your line of work, but don't forget there are only two slots. Alienware uses 2 8 gb 16 gb option. So when you want 32 GB, we sell the 'old'.

    6. 6700hq and 6820hk i7 is fast. the difference between them is only 100 MHz. Overclocking in a laptop is never a good idea.

  • Alienware 15 R3 2016 m2 2280 SSD

    Hello

I am considering buying an Alienware 15 R3 (new version of 2016), with pre-installed Windows 10 Pro. The version I'm looking at has a 256 GB SSD more 1 TB HARD drive. I know that the 2015 R2 version supports replacing the internal SSD by a new m2 2280 SSD, but I don't know about the version R3 2016. I have a few questions:

    (1) can I get the 256 GB SSD and replace it with an another m2 SSD NVMe based SSD (most likely the Samsung 960 Pro 2 to).

    (2) as the SSD that comes with the laptop will be the BONES and other drivers, what is the best way to reinstall it on the replacement of 2 TB SSD whenever I swap discs on?

    (3) 2016 R3 supports is?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

    (1) Yes, you can.

    (2) you can clone the drive or just do a manual installation.

    (3) it does.

The R3 has 2 slots for readers of m2 in height, you could take advantage of that for the cloning process.

  • Alienware 15 R2: Move OS to SSD

    Hello!

I really hope that there is someone here who can help you as I struggled for days with that.  I just bought an Alienware 15 R2 with a 1 TB HARD drive and a 1 TB SSD.

When I got to the machine (and after virtually all my stufff) I realized that for reasons that I can't just begin to understand the operating system has been installed on the HARD drive and not on the SSD.

I tried mainly to use the USB stick recovery alienware to do a fresh install, but I can't get the OS on the SSD.

In the BIOS drives looks like this

Fixed HDD HGST HTS721010 (1000 GB)
    Second HARD drive no
    Third HARD drive no
    M.2 PM951 is 1024 GB Samsung SSD-1

However, the SSD is not available as an option in the boot (even when you select Legacy) menu.  I tried of pwd protect the HARD drive and to deliberately enter the wrong pwd 3 times to lock, then start with the Alienware USB key recovery.  But when I try to install the OS it will return the error "a required disk partition is missing."

Please, please, if someone can advise I would be very grateful, because it makes me crazy.  Have the operating system on the HARD drive and leaving the much faster SSD for any storage of files on makes no sense at all.

    Thank you!

    Charlie

After weeks of frustration, I finally managed to get the start-up of the SSD.  I could not initialize the disk with Partition of AOMEI Deputy.  After much fiddling around, however, I was finally able to make an exact copy of the HDD to the SSD with AOMEI PA and then all of a sudden the SSD starts.  I had tried another disc copy programs without success but with AOMEI it finally worked.  When the SSD finally start, it was easy to do a clean install of Win10 on the partition of win.  My Alienware15 is now 16 seconds to start password Win, rather 3 or 4 minutes before...

Thank you all for a helping hand and a specific thanks to CHERRYS2 for the tip of AOMEI PA!

  • The upgrade of the SSD on my laptop from Alienware 17

Hello. I just got my new laptop Alienware 17 game and so far, I am VERY impressed with its performance. Frame rates are amazing in everything I tried, and it remains very cool compared to my laptop XPS15. It has a 'boot' of 256 GB drive and a dish of 5 400 rpm 1 TB disk for storing data.

I want to improve the SSD 256 GB for a 1 TB SSD. I bought the 1 TB SSD and cloned the 256 GB for it. I opened the laptop according to the manual and looked at the "primary" hard disk, expected to be the 256 GB SSD but rather what I found in this slot machine is the data of 5 400 rpm 1 TB drive. Research in the 'secondary' Bay, I see that it is empty. I can't put anything I want on the 256 GB SSD, that's why I bought the 1 TB SSD. Where the 256 GB SSD, and how will install the SSD 1 TB as primary drive (boot)?

I also intend to upgrade the flat disc at 1 to 7 200 RPM SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) after the SSD upgrade. I need first of all put the SSD well. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks for listening, and I'll be happily play until I can find an answer.

    Best,

    Marc

Here's what I decided to do:

Keep the record of 256 GB m2 for start-up and cache. The CT 1 SSD is the main location for my apps and games. I removed the disc 5 400 rpm and put a 1 to 7 200 RPM SSHD in the secondary location. The 5 400 1 TB drive is now in surplus but can be used for other purposes. Everything seems to work properly.

Thanks for all your comments, it's much appreciated.

    Best,

    Marc

  • Alienware 15 R2 M.2 SSD

Can anyone confirm how many slots m2 is available on the Alienware 15 R2 and if they are SATA or PCIe? I considering buying one and prefer to buy my own SSD to put in it because it would cost roughly half as much for twice the storage.

    Thank you

    Ved

2 PCIe / slots SATA m2.  And in looking at the article, oval M can power SATA and SSD PCIe.

    B Key M Key B & M Key
    PCIe 2.0 x 2 / SATA PCIe 2.0 - 3.0 x 4/SATA

    PCIe SATA / 2 x

You should be fine. Keys B & M connectors should run in the other location.
