Alienware 15 R2: Move OS to SSD

Hello!

I really hope that there is someone here who can help you as I struggled for days with that.  I just bought an Alienware 15 R2 with a 1 TB HARD drive and a 1 TB SSD.

When I got to the machine (and after virtually all my stufff) I realized that for reasons that I can't just begin to understand the operating system has been installed on the HARD drive and not on the SSD.

I tried mainly to use the USB stick recovery alienware to do a fresh install, but I can't get the OS on the SSD.

In the BIOS drives looks like this

Fixed HDD HGST HTS721010 (1000 GB)
Second HARD drive no
Third HARD drive no
M.2 PM951 is 1024 GB Samsung SSD-1

However, the SSD is not available as an option in the boot (even when you select Legacy) menu.  I tried of pwd protect the HARD drive and to deliberately enter the wrong pwd 3 times to lock, then start with the Alienware USB key recovery.  But when I try to install the OS it will return the error "a required disk partition is missing."

Please, please, if someone can advise I would be very grateful, because it makes me crazy.  Have the operating system on the HARD drive and leaving the much faster SSD for any storage of files on makes no sense at all.

Thank you!

Charlie

After weeks of frustration, I finally managed to get the start-up of the SSD.  I could not initialize the disk with Partition of AOMEI Deputy.  After much fiddling around, however, I was finally able to make an exact copy of the HDD to the SSD with AOMEI PA and then all of a sudden the SSD starts.  I had tried another disc copy programs without success but with AOMEI it finally worked.  When the SSD finally start, it was easy to do a clean install of Win10 on the partition of win.  My Alienware15 is now 16 seconds to start password Win, rather 3 or 4 minutes before...

Thank you all for a helping hand and a specific thanks to CHERRYS2 for the tip of AOMEI PA!

    Hello

I am considering buying an Alienware 15 R3 (new version of 2016), with pre-installed Windows 10 Pro. The version I'm looking at has a 256 GB SSD more 1 TB HARD drive. I know that the 2015 R2 version supports replacing the internal SSD by a new m2 2280 SSD, but I don't know about the version R3 2016. I have a few questions:

    (1) can I get the 256 GB SSD and replace it with an another m2 SSD NVMe based SSD (most likely the Samsung 960 Pro 2 to).

    (2) as the SSD that comes with the laptop will be the BONES and other drivers, what is the best way to reinstall it on the replacement of 2 TB SSD whenever I swap discs on?

    (3) 2016 R3 supports is?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

    (1) Yes, you can.

    (2) you can clone the drive or just do a manual installation.

    (3) it does.

The R3 has 2 slots for readers of m2 in height, you could take advantage of that for the cloning process.

First of all, the graphics card can be improved and if so, should I go with?

Depending on the type of memory I thought to install is:

    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16 GB DDR3 - 1600 PC3-12800)

I heard that 8 GB was supposed to be the max, but that was only because it was all that was available at the time, the system was released and that others have used up to 16 GB.

It will work or is there another suggestion?

Thirdly, the SSD I plan on installing is:

    Crucial BX200 480 GB SATA III 6 Gb/s 2.5 "Solid State Drive CT480BX200SSD

Still, I read the system never was not originally designed to support SATA III but if you use BIOS version A09 it would work.

    Is that correct or suggestions?

The last two things I was wondering was that the system overheat easily and stops, to rebuild the thermal paste on the CPU and heatsink help correct this?  As well as to clean the fans, of course.  Or are there other options I should look into?

Anyone know where to buy a new adapter power for this system as well?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me with.

    Hello.

First of all I would like to ditch the 620M processor, it's i7 below, you can get and dual-core only, not quad.

You should be able to find an i7 820QM at a reasonable price, these days, 920QM or 940QM would be even better, they were the fastest available for this model.

Once you have upgraded the CPU to something on an i7 720QM you can upgrade you RAM to 32 GB at 1333 MHz with no problems, if you want faster than 1333 you need to adjust overclock settings in the system BIOS.

You have two HDD slots, up to any size SSD 1 TB plug-and-play (or to the more require very few adjustments BIOS) Firmware may need to be updated but also that it should be OK, just stick with an alienware used as Samsung brand, and if you can get one from the SSD slightly more older you might save money , you don't need a model 'latest and greatest '.

Upgrade your GPU in the M17xR2 model can be a pain, the fan control is terrible and to really improve and play safely, you should probably use HW Monitor, so you do not cook your cards.

Memory the AMD maps are more lenient when it comes to bi - GPU - I think remember me some upgraded GPU not X shot or SLIing in this model, but now is earlier in order not to forget.

The M17xR2 is a very popular model, with thousands of people, the GPU upgrade - you can having to sort through the garbage to find the jewels but the info you need should be available if you do a search on google

NotebookReview Forum would be a great place to start, 99% of the info you need should be there, the other 1% proably will be on techinferno.

Guilbert - I still think that the M17xR2 has been one of the best they have done...

  • Alienware 15 R2 - boot from the SSD m2

    Hello

My employer has replaced my old laptop work with an Alienware 15 R2, and the it Department installed Windows 8.1 (most other software I need) on the 1 TB drive HARD but left white M.2 256 GB SSD.

I want to have the system startup of the SSD instead, so I cloned the two partitions ('System reserved' and 'Windows') from the HDD to the SSD using EaseUS Todo Backup. However, in the BIOS settings, I see no option to have the system startup of the SSD m2 - I tried the UEFI and inheritance settings.

Please can someone tell how can I have the start of the SSD system?

    Thank you.

P.S. I prefer not to return the system to my IT Department as it could be with them for a long period of time. I have full admin rights on the systems and I'm not adverse to some tech work.

I have it fixed now, so I've added some info here for someone else in the same situation...

It turns out that I couldn't start to the SSD m2 except if the system drive is converted from MBR/GPT/UFEI BIOS (or unless Windows is installed in a first time as UFEI, which wasn't the case with my cloned system image).

I converted the drive in UEFI by following the 'conversion Windows installation UEFI BIOS' guide on Microsoft Technet and after the start of the system in UFEI mode I was able to boot from SSD. (I also ran MiniTool Partition Wizard to ensure that the new Windows partition was properly aligned and launched "formal winsat v ' starting from a command prompt with admin rights to have Windows optimize settings for the new drive")

  • Pavilion s5257c: can I move HDD to SSD

I would replace the current with a SSD HARD drive because the HARD drive starts to become noisy.  Is worthwhie exercise or an exercise in futility?  The PC still works well, running Win 10, and I wouldn't spend the money for a new.

    Thank you.

While the PC is still "works" with Windows 10, this isn't really a very advanced for when it was new and certainly not more.  If it were me, I would not spend the time and effort to put a SSD in when a new hard drive would probably cost less and work like this about.  Given the architecture of this PC, I would invest in additional expenditures of an SSD vs a normal hard drive.

  • 13 Alienware does not recognize the second ssd m2

I just installed an ssd in m.2 ADATA in the second slot, and while the drive appears in the bios and in intel rapid storage app it does not appear in windows as a usable drive.  What I understand is the original ssd in the 'c' drive and I it does not show as a "d" or any other player.  He also appears in Device Manager as well.  What should I do to make it appear as drive "d".

  • Now start (end) MM 2014 out SSD external; What should I do with the profile on my HHD?

As indicated in the title, I copied my HARD whole on an external SSD drive which is running off the coast of USB 3.0. Things work terribly for months now, so I think I'm ready to wipe the HARD disk partition original that was made when initially, I set up my Mac Mini and recover about 300 GB of space which is just collecting dust. I'm just a little unsure as to how to best / safest this approach and could use some advice.

    • Should I simply delete the partition by using the disk utility? Who will mess up anything?
    • Should I leave a copy of Mac OS on that partition incase my SSD never goes down?
    • What happens to the settings of recovery if I wipe the HARD disk partition original?

    All advice is appreciated!

Personally I backup the HARD drive and external SSD on another external drive and set it asside before doing anything.

    • Who will mess up anything?

1 depends on how you initially install and everything moves on the SSD...?

1.a. If you have formatted and installed a clean OS X on the SSD, then used together Assistant to migrate everything on.

(so yes, it might be safe to delete your data on the internal HARD disk and OS X)

1.b. If you simply copied everything above the SSD.

(while not, because both drives could be based on each other and sharing as Siamese)

    2. depending on how you answered 1... ?

It would make a good backup for the SSD drive.

    3. it depends also how you answered 1... ?

If you answered 1.a... then you should already have a recovery on the SSD Partition.

  • HP Elitebook 840: Can how SSD I use to replace my current HARD drive?

My HARD drive is starting to become a little slow and I want to move to an SSD. I borrowed an empty SSD with a friend to test the speed, but it does not appear in the BIOS. It is a standard Samsung SSD that should work. Is there a problem with my computer or it's compatibility with the SSDbrand or the type problems?

I am also looking in the upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB of ram, can someone connect 1 stick of 8 GB of RAM that is compatible with my computer without having to replace the current 8 GB key.

I can't recommend a disk of 60 gigs. A base installation of Windows will run about 20 concerts and you have hibernation files and to restore files, applications (MS Office is 10 GIG more) and these and before you know it the drive will be full. You actually can't fill 100% so the actual capacity is above about 55 concerts. Yes, I'll tell you get a 128 gig. Here's a concert 128 for not much extra money:
