Alienware m18x r1 gpu controls upgrade

Hello everyone, its my first time here and for the first time have an Alienware, its awesome! In any case, I have an Alienware m18x r1 with double graphics nvidia gtx 560 m and an Intel I7-2680.  I want to move to the gtx 580 m and I was wondering I need to buy something else besides that the gpu as the cables or heat sinks?

Yes, a 2960XM or 2920XM works beautifully in your M18xR1 or the other of these XM processors will be better than any CPU mobile non-Extreme, including latest processors Haswell. In fact, the obsolete 2920XM, 2960XM, 3940XM and 3920XM processors will be even better than the more recent processor Extreme 4930MX of Haswell. Intel Haswell i7 desktop and mobile processors are poor overclockers and they can't keep up with Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge i7 CPU because of the temperature and the limitation of the problems. Upgrade your M18xR1, you'll have a machine to equal or exceed the performance of 18 new Alienware similarly spec'd, in order to make this upgrade makes sense. You can also achieve the massive advantage of having the ability of a system completely unlocked BIOS flash, which is currently not possible with the new machines Haswell-based.

You'll need to buy a better CPU heatsink to the CPU of XM support. Order a 3-pipe heat sink M18xR2. He will do a great job and fits perfectly in your M18xR1. Dell Reference number is 0MXJ5.

I invite you to upgrade to GTX 680 M SLI instead of 580 M SLI. While 580M is definitely better than 560M you will blow a lot of money on a relatively minor performance increase. The SLI GTX 680 M upgrade works perfectly in the M18xR1. Do not use heat sinks 560 M unless they have a sticker showing they are sized for 100W. If they have a sticker indicating 75W, you will run into problems with a 100W GPU. (580 M and 680 M are the two video cards to 100W). While the heat sinks 560 M adapts physically, I do not recommend their use. However, GTX 580 M sinks 100W of heat works really well for 680 M and 780 M video cards.

Here are the reference numbers for Dell that you would need for this upgrade:

Part number Qty. Description
XHW5W 1 Fan law, graphics card (if you currently have a single GPU and GPU fan)
GDMRG 1 NVIDIA SLI Bridge Cable
CPCXD 2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 M 2 GB vRAM
Y48TK 1 Right to heatsink GeForce GTX 680 M (100W)
5G1VJ 1 Left heat sink GeForce GTX 680 M (100W)
3MHHT 2 Support NVIDIA GTX plate (can be supplied with heat sinks purchased new from Dell)

XM3C3

1

330W Delta AC adapter (required for CrossFire or SLI Systems)
Note: Dell P/N F0K0N is the same and will work perfectly as part replacement for XM3C3.

GTX 580 M is outdated and not powerful enough to handle some of today's demanding games and I think that you will be ultimately not satisfied with the results. The GTX 680 M has already been tested and verified 100% compatible with the M18xR1 even if this configuration is not supported by Dell/Alienware. (They can tell you that it is not compatible. Don't believe because it is absolutely not true. 7970 M and 780 M video cards have also been tested and they are all compatible with the M18xR1.) The GTX 680 M is more powerful that any new series 700M with the exception of GTX 780 M. GTX 680 M SLI cards is almost as well as GTX 780 M SLI in the new 18 Alienware. I do not recommend the upgrade to 780M SLI unless money is no object, because they are very expensive video cards. If money is no object, then go with 780M SLI is a no-brainer.

The increase in performance 680M offers more than 580 M is simply phenomenal... We're talking around a 100% increase in performance, and I beg you to consider this upgrade instead of 580 M SLI. If Dell/Alienware will not sell you video cards of 680M to do the upgrade for your R1, simply buy all the rest and then go get the Clevo GTX 680 M cards MXM 4 GB of Eurocom. Clevo cards work well in the Alienware machine.

If you buy a new CPU and GPU from Dell sinks, they will come with thermal pads and a 'paste' (TIM) for previously applied die surfaces. The Dell interface material thermal (TIM) is excellent and you will not have to buy any thermal paste for the CPU and the GPU die surface. If you buy used heat sinks, then I highly recommend to use IC Diamond thermal paste.

  • the upgrade of my Alienware m18x r2 RAPIDS Questions

    Hello yall I have some quick questions. My system is a gtx win8 - 675 m i7-3630qm Alienware m18x r2.

I read that the 3840qm and the 3920xm are very similar and the price level for the 3920xm is not worth for an upgrade if money is a problem.

In this spirit I think to go with the 3840qm, I just need to make sure that I have not upgraded the heat sink or the power supply if you choose the 3840qm.

the next question is I'm tempted with going with the 3920xm only if I don't have to upgrade the PSU and the radiator, so I have to upgrade the PSU and the radiator?

last question is after I or until I update my cpu do I need to uninstall or install anything?

You can use the same any CPU heatsink upgrade you.

For the i7 3840QM that you don't need to upgrade to the power adapter, you should be fine if you have the 240W.

  • Alienware Aurora R3 CPU needs upgrade

I have the card with me now on the existing processor, but I heard somewhere that in order to replace the CPU, the computer must be shipped to the factory of Alienware. I have no experience in lieu of the CPU and do not wish to try myself. Someone at - it an order of magnitude estimate on how much it will cost me (parts included) if I send to Alienware?

Dell/Alienware don't post-purchase upgrades - you may be able to upgrade the processor slightly (Core i7 of second generation) but your upgrade options will be limited.  If you don't want to do the work yourself, any store of the local computer can change the CPU - don't expect much in the way of speed.  You'd be much better replace the hard drive with an SSD upgrade the processor, which is still in the League of the "Very fast" even today.

  • Alienware m18x does not turn on

Hi, my alienware m18x sudently closed today. When I press the Start button, it won't turn. Can someone help me! PS: When I plugged the captain, the led turn off.

    Hello!

Is the laptop didn't light not at all or is AlienFX of light or fan activity? Have you tried the adapter only and the battery only?

    powa8

I already tried the hard reset, the thing that you have to press the button for 30 sec to 1 min and it does not work...

Just to clarify, did you remove the AC adapter and the battery before doing so? If not, try again after the correct steps: turn the system off, disconnect the AC adapter / CC, remove the battery, press on and press and hold power for 30 seconds, reconnect the power supply and the battery and then try to turn it back on.
  • Alienware m18x r2 eyefinity

    Hello
I have an Alienware m18x r2 with AMD Radeon HD 7970 M (4 GB). And I want to add 2 or 3 external displays with 1920 x 1080 resulution. But there is only 1 HDMI, 1 mini display and 1 vga port and I can't use 2 of them at the same time. Is there anyway that I can do eyefinity with this model? I also use it for games. (WoW, CS, etc.)

    Hello!

To set up a total of 3 monitors (2 external and the laptop LCD), to use the HDMI port and the MiniDP.

NOTE: Use the MiniDP you might need a Active MiniDP to HDMI/DVI.

  • Alienware 17 R5 gpu upgrade

    Hello guys...

I have a Radeon HD 8970 M in my Alienware 17 R5 and I think to upgrade my GPU.

    What choices do I have?

Since I have a Radeon, is it possible to update for Nvidia?

I ask because of the Optimus feature. I don't know if its something of the graphics card only or if this function has anything attatched to the motherboard.

    Thank you much in advance.

    Rafael

Optimus is a feature that is installed with the driver of the GPU, so no need to worry about this.

You can plug and play any series of NVidia GPU ' 7' and any '8' or 'R9 2XXM' AMD GPU.

If you want something more recent you will need to do some light pilot mods to install.

I'll give you the short version.

Alienware only NVidia and AMD license with the serial numbers for the GPU, they were issued with.

For example, you have a R1 AW17 - they were issued with '7' series nvidia and AMD series '8 '.

Alienware gave device NVidia and AMD, and machine ID's for the GPU only - NO OTHER MODELS - so when you say a GTX980 in your laptop and try to install the driver it will come back as "no device found".

This is because Alienware refuses to release or authorize the new device ID of NVidia and AMD, so they don't understand them to their drivers, so you get the message "No hardware found" during the installation of the driver.

What you have to do is insert your machine what ID hardware in the driver that you downloaded, stop "driver signature enforcement" and you can install any GPU that you like, even the newest.

Sounds complicated but it does not, after your have done 2 or 3 times it will take less than a minute

  • Upgrade to a R2 of Alienware X 51 GPU, housing and food

    Hello

I thought originally to upgrade my GPU x Alienware 51 only for a GTX 970. After looking around on the many messages of the forum, I decided it would just be easier if I bought a new case and PSU, in order to allow a further renovation in the future. Is this a good idea? I have little or no experience building computers, so why I decided just to buy an Alienware in the first place, rather than building my own. I just decided that now I need to upgrade and I was wondering if it would be a good way to start.

    My current features are:

    Intel Core i5 4460 3,20 GHz

    4 095 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 MB

    Alienware 0PGRP5 (SOCKET 0)

The pieces I am considering upgrading to are:

    Corsair 9011079-CC-WW carbide series 600 c case

    Corsair Builder CP - 9020048 - UK Series CX600 600W power supply

4 GB of EVGA GeForce GTX GPU 970

And an additional 850 Samsung 1 TB 2.5 SSD EVO

Is this a possible accumulation at all? I would be able to move the motherboard, hard disk and CPU on the new case without much experience at all? All components would work together?

    Thanks for the help,

    Lucas

Look at the photos I posted, you will see that the ports on the back are different from R2 to R3.

Because the ports are part of the motherboard, you can't swap around.

    So to confirm.

X 51 R1 and R2 motherboards and cases were identical and interchangeable.

X 51 R3 motherboards and cases are different from R1 and R2, so you cannot use motherboards from them in R3

  • Alienware Mx17 R2 GPU upgrade

I was wondering if someone would have some suggestions on a GPU for my Alienware MX 17 R2 upgrade.  I am running with ATI 4870 HD Mobility card.

I was running with 2 but it turned bad :(

    Thank you

    I'll take suggestions :)

    Hello!

If you want to upgrade to another AMD card, you can get the Radeon HD 5870 or if you want to switch to NVIDIA you can get the GeForce GTX 285 Both have dual AMD Crossfire and NVIDIA SLI option.

For these graphics cards you need the AC adapter 240W so make sure you check what charger you have before proceeding with any upgrade.

  • Can the alienware 18 860 m GPU be upgraded to 980 m?

Purchased a new AW18 a year ago. Due to budgetary constraints at the time where I opted for cards of 860 M double. I'm now trying to determine if I can pass to 980M cards and that therefore what would be needed. As in will it take new radiators and a greater power brick?

    • 330W POWER supply
    • the 3-pipe heat sinks (you should already have, but check just to be safe).
    • MXM GTX 980MS (8 GB); You'll find them on ebay, eurocom and Rjtech. Otherwise, there is a seller over at notebookreview with GTX 980ms.
    • Reference Dell vBIOS
    • BIOS A12 (can be obtained from the Dell Support Site)
    • Some pads thermal and thermal paste (and get good also).

And that's all. Things thermal are cheap (even those who are good), but are not the GPU. 1 GTX 980 m is more powerful than your double GTX 860 m.

  • Alienware X 51 GPU Upgrade?

I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times, but y at - it an update of video card I can do for my X 51 system, I bought it when it first came out with the option to block FOOD GTX 555 and 330 watts and now some new games is to come, for example, Company of Heroes 2 , I'm starting to notice that the 555 GTX simply isn't cutting it anymore. I know that the new generation of x 51 have gtx 660 and Rachel now, but I don't want to have to buy a whole new system, is possible to get just the graphics card?

Yes you can.  You can get the 660 GTX which is probably two times more powerful than the OEM GTX 555 and apparently it works fine on feeding of 330 watts on this X 51 system.  I'd probably get a model of external evacuation EVGA like this one HERE because of your small case size.

One thing to note is that I'm not sure if the video cards that have their power connectors on the side of the card from the back of the card can be inserted into this system.  The EVGA cards have their connectors on the side.  I would not get one of these cards dual fan for this system.  I would like to look into this more closely to confirm that there is no place for power cables stand on the side.

  • An R2 of Alienware X 51 video card upgrade

So I thought about upgrading my videocard alienware x 51 but I just need some help, I was wondering if this card could work on my system

    My current features are:

    Intel i5 - 4430 CUP @3.00 GHz

    GeForce GTX 645

My diet is the 240w, but I'm honestly not sure if it could be 330w that I bought the computer some time ago and reinstalled windows. I don't know exactly where to check the watts well. :/

but the card, I was told to buy this card

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Mini ITX overclocked to 4GB GDDR5 PCiE video card GV-N970IXOC-4GD

So I was wondering if this card will work with my computer, thanks in advance

You should look at reference GPU. Examples below.

PNY, ASUS, MSI, EVGA, etc. (you can google for the rest).

My vote goes to the PNY GTX 970.

You have the PSU 240w with you that 330w POWER supply was only for the 660, 670 GTX GTX / GTX 760 ti GTX 960 and R9 270 (x). You should not for the GTX 970 330w POWER supply. You can buy a Dell or newegg.

  • Problems with Alienware M18x-R2

This craigslist guy from whom I bought M18x-R2, 2013 (I know I'm a fool. I would not have bought which). I erased everything on my alienware. I noticed that my alienware is randomly freezing and slow. I watched youtube videos and it became too much freezing. I checked for mcafee antivirus scan and Defrag & optimize. Everything seemed to happen. My Alienware startup is like 5 minutes. I don't know why. Today, I checked to see if I have the warranty. He said his November 2014. How do warranty work? I've never done this before. Either way, I am deaf and sorry for the bad English.

    Alienware Specifications:
8.1 Windows Pro (this guy told me he upgraded)
    AMD Radeon HD M 7970
    Intel Core i7 3740QM
    12 GB of RAM
    900 GB hard drives

I recommend reinstalling Windows. Here is a video with step by step instructions.

Hello, I have a fairly serious problem on a satellite (new) S50-B-15 q

After the upgrade to Windows 10 and re-installing Windows (including all the necessary drivers) Amd Radeon R7 m260 graphics card does not appear
I tried to install drivers from amd available on the Toshiba site, first, then some directly to amd. I had a hard time because the driver installation (kept getting the "package installation failed" error), but even now that they are 'installation', the amd radeon does not appear in Device Manager (and not at all either no longer works).

All I get in the graphics cards is the integrated gpu (Intel HD Graphics 5500), I tried to launch a program to use graphic resources to see if he would "pass" to amd, but this is not (it was a piece of advice found on a forum)

I have already spent a lot of time on this problem and would really appreciate help
