Allocation of computer processor virtual and conflicts of resources

Hardware: Dell VRTX, 3 M620, 2-10 Core CPU blades / Blade (40 Total-blade of logical cores), 128 GB RAM/Blade (will be promoted to 192 GB RAM/blade in the near future.)

Operating system on each virtual computer: Windows Server 2012 R2 64 bit

I currently have five 5 VM running.  I'm new to VM and I have been very generous in allocating CPU/RAM/disk space when I install these virtual machines.  I was told to add three additional 3 of the virtual computer.  One (1) of these 3 three new VM should very light as the software installed will not take resources.

The provider of software for the three sectors of talking the new VM a portion of their applications installed on a virtual machine sometimes has problems with CPU contention, if more than one CPU 1 is allocated to the virtual machine where the software is installed.  The software vendor talks about the virtual computer by using more resources, caching, etc..  Software indicates the requirements of a physical server processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core (2 GHz) processor.  This software publisher also refers to the allocation of CPU plus sometimes reduce performance.

My RAM and CPU current assignments are:

MACHINE virtual #1: 8 logical cores - 64 GB of RAM

VM #2: 4 logical cores - 16 GB of RAM

VM #3: 4 logical cores - 32 GB RAM

VM #4: 4 logical cores - 16 GB of RAM

VM #5: 8 logical cores - 32 GB RAM

Proposed future VM:

VM #6: 4 logical cores - 16 GB of RAM

VM #7: 4 logical cores - 16 GB of RAM

VM #8: 2 logical cores - 8 GB of RAM

VM #7 is the one with the software that the seller is concerned.

Currently:

#1 blade has VM 1 & 2

Blade #2 has 3 & 4 VM

Blade #3 has 5 VM

Of your experience:

1. what problems of resources that you met related to the CPU contention, caching, the use of RAM?

2 do I propose above seem like he would have problems with restraint of resources resulting from the system bogged down?

3. What are the best ways/tools to monitor the use of restraint/resource?

4. If I wanted to briefly shut down a virtual machine and lower cores of CPU and/or RAM allocated, this has a negative impact on licensing of Windows?  It seems that no impact relative to the licensing, because Windows must see only little material change.

Thanks in advance.

Someone else takes care of the installation/specifications (after the virtual machine configuration).  Therefore, allowances will be made by their instructions.

Computer memory virtual is increased from 6 to 8 GB and now vm fails to power on with the error massage not enough resources to meet the HA failover, attached screenshot

The message is usually due to the Admission HA and reservations control configuration memory set on one or more virtual machines. With the default configuration HA calculates the sizes of slot based on the memory and CPU. Any reserve on a virtual machine could increase the size of the slot and lead to fewer available seats. What you can do is either to reduce (or eliminate) reservations about the VM (s) or set admission control to a percentage rather than the host failures tolerated.

  • How to set the processor affinity and memory.

We have explicit recommendations of our application provider to set the processor affinity for one of our virtual machines running their product. However, this process is not quite clear to me despite the available docs. We are company ESXi 5.1 more.

By looking at the tab "resources" for the parameters of the virtual computer you see under CPU:

Actions (I would do that quite high so that it never goes to confront other good?)

    Booking

    Limit

The requirement is to set aside x cores for the virtual machine while it is never claim to waiting or resource. They would also potentially implement affinity memory related to the same socket for the effectiveness of the NUMA node.

We have a host with 2 8-core processors with 256 GB of memory. I'm not worried about the affinity of memory. This should be as simple as the control that the 'reserve any memory comments' correct?

Is it simpler just set up a pool of resources for cela CPU and memory? The only concern I have is it if the processor uses the same memory channels. We do not want a CPU into a socket using the channel memory of another plug for this virtual machine.

And it's too late to go back to physics for this system.

Eeghads! Just FYI, the processor affinity is almost never what a seller really wants, even if they think they do. I can imagine there are valid use cases, but I spoke with several vendors who recommend this, and they were all wrong.

From what I understand in your summary, the application is sensitive to the latency of the CPU. If the physical compute capacity, actions and reservations will address the latency. Latency is the only reason why they want to set the affinity, or are there others? If there is other, know what they are, because there is a good chance to those who are also invalid reasons. The processor affinity tends to exacerbate the problems you're having with loans time CPU and can often cause latency application MORE CPU than that without it. Yes, you can set up reserves of CPU to address these issues for this particular virtual machine, but you made life more difficult for the CPU scheduler. DRS involved in the loan time CPU, which means she won't necessarily move these other virtual machines on this host, even if they are jointly stop like crazy. While we're on the subject, this virtual machine would need to be excluded from automatic DRS migration, since you cannot vMotion with the processor affinity configured. It also means the virtual machine must be powered whenever his current host goes into maintenance mode.

In any case, verification 'reserve any memory comments' will not affect memory locality. Will just leave all the pages of virtual memory with physical memory pages (another side effect interesting is that creates the virtual machine is no longer a pagefile on the boot). If you REALLY have to set the affinity to the CPU/memory, memory affinity can be set by changing the settings of the VM, the tab "resources", select Advanced Memory, and you can configure NUMBER here. In addition, if you had already seen it, the processor affinity is configured in the tab "resources", under Advanced CPU.

I highly recommend you challenge the seller and ask if reservations CPU are sufficient. The planner of UC is already aware NUMA. VCPUs how they ask, anyway? Unless they want to more than 8, it is unlikely to split the virtual machine.

  • What is the difference between virtual and physical CPU cores?

I understand one is virtual and the other is physical. My question is, if I run a physical system with two physical processors quadricoeurs, which would be an equivalent virtual machine configuration, assuming I use VMware on a dual CPU quad-core server?

    Would be - this 4 x vCPU or 8?

Run perfmon to see what treatment power is actually using a period reasonable period (x days)...

You generally assign virtual servers less vCPU than you should in physical cores before conversion, or building a VM... Where you had processors dual core quad now, the reality of things would be that it is really only with the power equivalent of two hearts (crete)...

Beauty to go with a virtual server is that you can assign a n vCPU VM start (for example, two for a multi-thread aware or SMP, application server) and add later if the performance requires it. The majority of the VMS is built with one vCPU to start, unless you KNOW (beyond doubt) that demand on the server will need vCPU more and the software running in the VM actually fully benefit the granting of vCPU more to her... I have, in general, set the alarms I know where the application of the CPU is abnormally high (or above the normal threshold) on VM (email is sent)... This allows me to monitor the requests to the server and adjust it accordingly.

You can also grant a greater share value VM for resources, so it has a higher priority than the other virtual machines when he needs these resources.

Of course, there is much to be said for having a host server (for ESX/ESXi) who has enough power too... These days, I wouldn't recommend becomes a new server (for a production environment) with anything less than the Interior, dual Xeon 5620... Larger environments might require higher speed Xeon 56xx or maybe even 65xx or popular 75xx Xeon series with more cores per socket... This is a capacity adequate session/run planning would have come into play...

    General requirements

    • OS X 10.6.8 or later version
    • 2 GB memory

  • How the processor cores and RAM work?

I'm abit confused as to how work the processor cores and RAM work? What is selecting 2 hearts the mac was still 4 processors and virtualization of Windows is limited to 2 hearts or virtualization of Windows has 2 cores and running the CMA may have 2 hearts ? The same for both RAM and also when is suspended the RAM of virtualization Windows continue to use mac RAM?

Kind of a newbie question, but I'm new on this and have tried searching on Google and could not find anything on this subject, it was that most do just enough carrots or RAM rather than information.

    Best regards

    -Mark

Welcome to the community - operating system MAC will always use all the cores by default. Fusion is an application running in the operating system, and when you run a virtual machine and it needs time processor, the operating system will set the virtual CPU on a core - and if you have 2 vcpus assigned it will plan each thread on separate kernel - memory is done in the same way that the virtual machine when it is necessary the OS it will plan to the applicattion.

When you suspend a VM from virtual machines running it will still use some memory - to suspend the virtual machine, it is better to merge.

  • Confused by the strategy of allocation of ram ESX virtual machines

    Hello

I have a "MS SBS 2003 R2 premium" production virtual machine running on ESX 3.5.0 build 123630: VM has 4 GB of allocated RAM.

On this virtual machine, all processes are running (IE exchange, sql server, antivirus, antispam, mail, archiving,... etc.) and some of them are performing badly (especially exchange and sql mail archiving database); While working on the optimization with the machine to a single application they analized the use of resources within SBS 2003 and told me that there is not enough RAM (only 300 M. By the way it seems to me that on an OS Server using a lot of free ram is a waste of resources, but it is another point...).

Looking at the windows Task Manager (see attached screenshots) is confirmed, but control use of RAM for RAM usage average VM (with infrastructure VI client) is between 1 and 1.5 GB during working hours (09:00 - 20:00).

I'm confused: If there are so many processes within the VM asking for memory, why ESX gives only a third of the RAM allocated to the VM? And as all the other 3 GB, are they paged to disk?

Thanks in advance to help my understanding.

    Guido

Don't forget the vmkernel activiely tries to save on the memory usage - the tool is Transparent PAge Sharing - ability to the vmkernel to identify identical memory pages and store it once read only memory - so you could very easily have guest o/s of the virtual machine showing that it is using 4 GB but the esx server is only show that vm use - less

Now on your poor perfromance - what is the configuration of your server ESX - memory, CPU? How many virtual machines are hosted, and what are the respective configurastions - mem, # viretual UC? With a large file of the PAge check the performance graph and see how much memory ball is active, if any?

Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/2esJjcL - restart the system and check.

If the system is overheated and if there is no guarantee, then download here the maintenance manual - http://dell.to/2fnfeQ9 - clean the vents and the fan with a small vacuum cleaner or a can or compressed air. In addition, reapply the thermal grease to the heat sink. This will solve the problem of noise from fan as well.
