• HP ProBook b 6450: issues of analog tapes to CD writing / Line-In

  I have a HP Probook 6450 b, with 6 GB of RAM, running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit), equipped with the card its Intel(r) Audio display and the IDT Audio Control Panel, v. 1.0.6300.0.  I think I'm beyond the novice PC user and can even remove and swap the components of the laptop with success, although the will come I hope not at stake in connection with getting suggestions on the problem I have right now.

  I'm trying to convert some audio analog tapes to digital format, for the eventual conversion for CD ROM media  I have a cassette player, which will provide the single channel output.  I also have a copy of Audacity, which I think is my best bet for capture and recording audio input.

  I concede that I understand partially the role of the application of the IDT Audio Control Panel software installed, but I have noticed that it installs an Line-In option on the registration tab on the sound, under the Control Panel icon.  I tried to choose that and checked the Line-In input option under the configuration of Audacity.  I have 3.5 mm cable to connect the audio output of the tape drive to the input jack (MIC), on my laptop, but after several attempts, no audio output seems to be forwarded to the laptop and daring.  The microphone on the laptop works very well.  By plugging in an external speaker, I know that the cassette player's audio output.  My sound card doesn't have a dedicated Line-In plug, but I inferred that the IDT Control Panel has been able to fill this lack of a Line-In Jack with Microphone input jack.  And my cassette player, has only the single output (headphones) card available.

  I have studied this subject of conversion band a lot, and I think my set-up is basically correct, but I think there is just a problem between the IDT Audio Control Panel and Audacity - software and my ability to record analog audio content successfully.  I will actively monitor this announcement for the next few days and provide comments/answers ready to any solutions/options/suggested questions.   Thank you!

  Well, the answer to this question was not quite what I was hoping it would be, but there are a lot of questions out there, and perhaps a less number of responses (sort of a philosophical statement on life I guess...).

  Anyway, here's some good news (I'm happier when I solve my own problems - although part of bread crumbs scattered along the digital track by some other bloggers, and some advice from right-to-target to a great Audacity manual online, were the key to the solution.)
  
  Thus, it is a few steps (apparently) to get this band to Audacity output that are needed.  As for me (for later, when I forgot), that everyone, here are the steps:

  1. You must select the input parameters (Line-In) on Audacity
  2. You need to direct the sound output of the original device (tape player, etc.) to the Microphone Jack (not the headphone jack)
  3. On my HP laptop, you access the control panel IDT Audio and under the recording tab - set Microphone as the default recording device (it will probably have been set for initial internal Microphone as default device).
  4. You must ensure that your audio in the Control Panel icon, that tab Recording Microphone is set as the default device.
  5. The recommendation of Audacity tutorial, apparently, it is necessary in certain circumstances to track the Transport > Audio peripheral Rescan or restart Audacity instructions.
  6. From there, you will need to activate recording on Audacity and then adjust the audio output levels, on your output device original or on the audacity input slider.

  And since the pictures are always better, here is the proof of the pudding... or in this case the sound.  I hope others down the road will find this solution useful.  I'm marking this resolved.

• Can satellite L300 - I use the microphone as line-in port?

  On Toshiba Satellite L300 PSLBGE, there are too many plugs: microphone and headphones.

  I would like to copy and transform in digital music from my old analog tapes thorugh an audio cable and a former recorder. Before, I use a desktop PC, which was a line-in Jack (I use Sound Recorder). But the laptop has only two Sockets mentioned. Can I use taken mic as line - in one? At the present time, I installed Windows XP.

  Did you check your user manual? I doubt that this is because there, I created the following information:
  Standard 3.5 mm mini jack microphone allows the connection of a microphone or any other device for * audio *.

  This means that you can also connect other devices to input for audio recording. ;)

• Input microphone USB is overwhelmed to input device

  I have connected a device to USB audio interface Behringer 'U-Phono UF0202' on a computer Toshiba Qosmio X 505.  The unit takes analog tape recorders and entries of digital signals to the USB port.  The device is automatically identified and drivers not installed - no software from the manufacturer, just Microsoft drivers.  Drivers Microsoft treat it like a USB microphone and audio interface Behringer way dominates the entrance.  The level parameter must be set to 2 or 3 to prevent the sould indicators of level of maxing out.  I have to force another driver for this device that has more performance than a microphone?   If so how do you get the driver on the right USB port whenever you plug in the device?  Thank you.

  I found the plug-and-play standard configuration has continued to overdrive at the entrance.  I installed the drivers from Behringer and it works well with the right device selected on the USB port.  I'm not using Audacity; I use other software to record.

  It's my first post, so if I get this is wrong, I apologize.  My question is as stated above...

  Hi Rob,

  For DVCAM tapes, I highly recommend Firewire capture in the form of .avi files DV, which would be 100% lossless - essentially a transfer of data from a tape to hard drive - SAME data to different media. Doesn't get better than that. And keep backup tapes - I have a lot of DV and DVCAM tapes that are 15 years old and over and still read perfectly. Being digital, that signal will not be weird as old VHS tapes... you have a photo or not.

  For analog tapes, then use the MXO2 capture with Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame codec, which is intra-frame with 4:2:2 color and you can increase the data rate slider as needed to meet your needs for quality. Of course, you have the option of uncompressed with Matrox, but probably exaggerated and takes tons more storage space.

  What about H.264, it is certainly the most ubiquitous format around in recent years, but it is "lossy" - highly compressed, so I would not really call this archiving for so many info is thrown when encoding. I think that the color will be 4:2:0, for example, most interframe encoding (not full images). If your MXO2 has the option 'MAX' that supports capture directly in H.264 format, for what it's worth.

  The problem with the Matrox codec, or similar, is that it requires a PC with Matrox codec installed. But you will encounter in this type of situation regardless, years in advance. You might find yourself transcoding your entire library for a newer, better codec in 5 years, who knows.

  The only media with proven longevity are film. I have 8mm films of the 1940s who plays back perfect on the original Kodak Brownie projector that Grandpa passed. Try to reproduce any digital recent or size of band in the 1970s. HA!

  Something to consider about the archiving of your video library in digital - even if you have a RAID configuration with redundancy, you'll want all the files that are duplicated on another drive to safety. Readers can and do fail. And readers also die after several years (or less) while just sitting on a shelf, they become just unreadable. You must therefore have a backup AND move the data to newer media after a few years without danger or risk losing everything.

  I have worked with our local PBS affiliate sent a monthly programme which we create and deliver on DVD for a few years.  Recently, they have requested that send us the episodes in the form of a video file instead of a DVD and I can't find how to create a file that meets their specifications.  We are shooting on Panasonic HMC150 AVCHD 1080 60i cameras and editing in first Pro CC 2014.  Here are the specifications that the station sent me:

  HD FILE

  Video format: 1080i 29.97 FPS (59,94 fields/sec) HD

  File format (s): XDCAM 1080i/60

  • XDCAM HQ: 4:2:0 to 35 Mbps MXF (OP1A, independent)

  • XDCAM HD422: 4:2:2, to 50 Mbps MXF (OP1A, independent)

  • Video Codec: MPEG-2 Long GOP, Sony XDCAM line

  • Order of fields: Upper first fieldwork

  • Audio format: sampling frequency of 48 KHz, uncompressed

  • Reference tone:-20dBfs

  • Its functional level: program Peak levels at 07:48 dBfs, nominal - 10

  • When a GIVEN weighted based on the meter is calibrated so-20 dBfs your 0 is SEEN, peaks of program should way 0 SEEN so.

  I can easily using SOUL to set the codec, container, field order, and audio format.  However, I don't know what they mean by reference your level of functioning and the last sentence on "a VU-meter weighted.  Can someone please help me understand how I can meet these last three requirements?  I'd rather not have to ask them because they are extremely busy, so I hope I can get assistance here.

  Maximum audio level that can be obtained with digital media is 0dbfs (full scale) anything less maximum is expressed as a negative DB number.

  The specifications that they gave you are a holdover from days of delivery of Ribbon, but many cable channels use these specifications.

  Reference note. At the beginning of the program is usually 30 seconds or more (the real position of length and time code of these often makes part of the spec.) section bars and tone. First to generate these bars and you have the choice of type SD or HD. The tone that generates the first is at-12 dB so you will need to change its gain - 8db to-20, make a click right-Audio gain-setting gain of-8.

  Peak of program levels. This is a holdover from days analog tape where the mod could not go above to - 10 dB (maximum level on a PPM meter) If you put a limiter in the master in the track mixer and set it to-5 dB, it should be all right.

  Pics program. It's asking for the average level of the program at about the same level as the tone. This has now (in first CC) was replaced by loudness metering. On the monitor of loudness - 23db and play the whole of the program, it should be in a db about-23. Adjust the levels to make it correct.

  That being said, you have been offering a file dvd-based program, it's just the media that you change. If they accept the sound of the dvd, they should have no problem with the alternative bases.

• Variable rate and Audio synchronization

  Hey everybody,

  I imported a bunch of old VHS tapes and made a few changes on them. But now, I noticed that the sound is out of sync.

  When I pull the audio synchronized on a point, then the audio will not be synchronized more on another point.

  I guess this is due to the variable frame rate. Somethimes it's 26, somethimes 24. Premiere Pro shows each VHS tape imported as 24.08 FPS or FPS 24.89.

  When I chose to create a new sequence of the clip parameters, they audio is also out of sync.

  Is there a way to get my audio in sync? When I play the clips in VLC or something, the audio is synchronized.

  Lately, I've been tranfering a lot of old vidoes of analog tape in digital video. All were created as H.264 mp4 640 x 480 with Elgato Video Capture. And all video files display fine in VLC, Media Player Classic, Quicktime and even iMovie. Some of these import fine at first CS5.5 without problem, but some end up green research, distorted and doubled, like this:

  

  I tried to interpret the film on its broken attachments, set the framerate on a constant like 25 fps. But this seems to have no effect.

  When I try to import the same file in After Effects CS5.5, I get this error: after effects error: overflow of conversion ratio denominator 17::18

  

  Anyone here have any ideas what's going on. I cut two against eachother to find some differences, but there is none, as I can see.

• Video Capture question

  I have a pretty basic question.  I use Adobe first Pro CS5 in recent weeks and I am positive, that this was a great purchase.  It does what I need and more (I took several tutorials and understand the basic functions well enough).  For my old data that has been saved on the Mini-DV format (new are 1080 p on SSD so it does not apply to my new thing), my basic question is will capture in CS5 by using the DV on my old camcorder provide results "even, more or less," compared with the help of a converter of specialized equipment.  I'll probably get a response of 'it depends', but would like advice for those who have used the CS5.  I used a converter material in the past with OK results.

  Sorry for the newbe question, but would like a quick answer, if anyone has the time.  BTW - my PC is new generation for video editing, has a lot of power and I don't have the ability of reading mercury.

  I also RCA plugs on the camera, however, no matter how the A/D converter is good (if you are using RCA connectors), firewire will be always the best.

  Well, you have essentially two different things here - yes, it's a camera, but you can use it to do two different things.

  Firstly, if you miniDV tapes, Firewire is the only link that you will use. When you do that, you don't transfer video in the traditional sense of the term, but rather that you are effectively copying tape on your hard drive. All that's on the miniDV Tape, it's the same thing as what you will end up with on the hard drive. Analog connections (RCA Sockets) will not be used for this process at all. So if you're talking about DV video, it's as good as it gets.

  On the other hand, if you have some sort of analog tape as VHS or Hi8, you have an A/D converter between the plate and the computer - is where the analog connections on the camera would come into play. In this case the base map is:

  Analog turntable-> RCA cable (or any other analog connection)-> DV camera as a converter A / D-> 1394 (Firewire) cable-> computer

  In this case, the best the analog signal is that you feed to the A/D converter, more digital captured video shows. Of course, there are all sorts of variables here - reading bridge, the type of analog connections, the quality and characteristics of the A/D converter and the DV codec itself - you can control some people and some you can't really, depending on what you have access to. If you're not dealing with analog video, however, you don't have to worry about all this

• WinXP and first 6.5 and Dv500

  As I mention here http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM I use a Pinnacle Dv500 to digitize analog tapes... and I could not first 6.02 to run under Windows XP (maybe because the XP I had included SP2 when I installed first 6.02) so I found myself running dualboot with Win2000 use the Dv500 and WinXP to edit with PPro3

  But... before I create a new i7 computer... I found a new beam first 6.5 and Dv500 (never opened)

  Does anyone remember if added P6.5 compatibility Windows XP?

  P6.5 will work well if I insatll a previous version of XP that did not include SP2?

  Because I'm going again to dual boot, I use WinXP just to P6.5 and the Dv500 and scan then Win7 64 bit for real editing with PPro5 (when it comes out)

• How do you propose I have better import and modify many portions of old VHS?

  I read the recent postings to the digitization of the multiple DVD and found it to be very interesting and informative. I searched in the archives, but did not run in an ad with exactly my question and I apologize because I know there must be others with the same question. That's what I have and want to do: Vista with an external Seagate attached via USB 2. I have Adobe Premier elements 3 but I am ready to buy another form of software and another form of external hard drive. I have a Firewire port.

  I have a box of old VHS tapes of the recitals, dance my child, ball games, etc... the bands are very long, but often have only small portions of interest on them and now that my children are older, they are only interested in the 5 minutes of themselves. I would like to import the video and burn to dvd the relevant parts of the VHS.

  I need to know both the equipment suggested to use to connect to the computer... what software I do you suggest that I use to edit images. Or maybe you have other suggestions.

  I used the first a bit. I've never used huge files, like an endless dance recital so I hope you tell me there's a way that I could perhaps find a device that would allow me to view and scan only the parts that I want... or, perhaps, it would be best to take these tapes somewhere and have it make a DVD and then is there a way to import only part of them in this way? These are NOT videos of world class... (in fact, 20 years later I realize how much I was wasting my money! (HA!)

  Here's what I did, more like an accident, rather than a process thought to spend a lot of money, or get the best possible quality when converting.

  I had a bunch of old analog tapes, just like you and always thought that it would be very kool to get them in a format that I can use and load on my PC.

  When I bought my DV Handycam, one of the options I was looking for was "Analog passthrough' capability. This basically allows connect an analog device such as a VCR and a video copy of your Handycam.

  Office "DVD burners" usually have analog connections and can basically do the same thing.

  With this feature, I then slowly went through the process of moving all my old recordings on my PC.

  It did not work, yes he did.

  Was it easy, Yes, it was (to the extent of the connection cable).

  Has been tedious and a little of your time, Yes, Yes and Yes.

  But over time I had all my old recordings on my PC and in a format that was initiated for the edition. (You can also make some changes in bulk to source the conversion).

  With respect to the quality, whereas the video source and method of conversion, I was very happy with the end result and anyone who considers the clips (on PC or TV), has a hard time to see the differences between the final product and the source.

  Would a dedicated HW device as Canopus gave better, most likely Yes, but in my case, the only time lets just move my tapes was not profitable. The purchase of a Cam with passthrough, or a DVD burner, works great and could be used for other things.

  (One caveat, with Canopus or bridge HW configuration, the process is faster because it allows you to directly analog to DV - AVI. And DV - AVI is the goal of format for easy mounting with PE7).

  A sure thing, my family and my friends get a hugh expel to see (because they are older in years).

  And no one ever complains of the quality of the videos...

Am I understanding that the required cable must be 'converted' because one end is analog and digital on the other? I intend to cassettes music download the Garageband application.
