anti virus software and the os

Can someone tell me their opinions on anti-virus software running on a database server? We are windows 2003 / 11g.

I didn't him no permission in the past, but our network of people think we should have installed so we can scan at the C: drive.

In addition, what is your policy of the OS update. I do not update the OS unless I have a problem currently known. Others seem to think this is crazy, but this policy has worked well for the last 3 years. I must add that we replace our databases every 4 or 5 years and they are all behind two firewalls - access is only through the web app or file server.

I would be very interested in other policies.

Thank you
Kathie

Personal opinion: I would never put AV on a production to address Oracle server itself,- and 'clean', I mean essentially what you say: it is not directly accessible by the public. It's behind a firewall; It has no functional connection to the Internet, etc. etc. etc.

We also disable automatic updates on all of our Windows servers, because otherwise, there is a tendency for a production database that you want to die without notice that updates automatic kick in!

Regarding the manual updates: we tend to not bother on a regular basis. We fully patched a server when we intend to take it offline for other reasons (for example, a fix Oracle CPU), so periodically everything becomes as up-to-date as possible. But during normal operation, we just let it run without interruption (i.e., without updates) for as long as possible. Only

  • Firefox 5.0 disabled an add-on, which is associated with my anti-virus software. Is this disabled module if I use another browser too or just in Firefox?

I just installed Firefox 5.0. I have also just renewed by subscription to Webroot Internet Security Essentials, so I have the updates on that as well, and apparently something in the latest Webroot is not compatible with the latest Firefox. When I open Firefox, I get a message that a Webroot 1.7 'Add-on' and a few files associated with Webroot (I wrote not them down and the error message disappeared) have been disabled. What worries me, because I do not know what part of my antivirus program has been disabled by Firefox. My Webroot reports that it is functional and up to date.

What he says is that Webroot has a special add-on for firefox which does not match the version of firefox you have. Webroot will still work, but it will not use this special accessory. You may or may not have a similar attachment that it is bundled with other browsers. I'm not sure. All-in-all, the module is not the main part of your anti-virus, it's just a piece of bonus, they give you.

Firefox has not disabled your anti-virus software, and using another browser will be no more or less dangerous than before that.

Think of it as a vacuum cleaner. He always goes to the vacuum cleaner and clean, but the small fancy brush to clean baseboards or something does not fit immediately.

They have most likely only need to change the small part of it that shows what versions of firefox, it will work with, if the chances are that if you keep an eye on, there will probably be an update soon with a version of the add-on that is compatible.

  • What is the prevalence of viruses, malware, etc., to be hidden and undetectable by anti-virus software?

    • As before, when my computer when my computer has been infected, I get a svchost.exe error, repeatedly, whenever I restart the computer. The infection has been discovered that the last time by my anti-virus software, because it was hidden.  It was a computer expert on this forum who told me my computer was infected by svchost.exe repeated error messages that I received.  I ran my Avast software, anti-malware software from MSFT Security Center, Win Defender, etc. this time, and it has detected no infections.  (Yes, I know what to do to pass this message means not necessarily my computer is infected, but the tech guy said that it is likely, given that the error message appeared on several occasions).  How detect and destroy the virus/malware hidden, etc?
    • Also, if anyone can answer another question... I was told that it is not recommended that I have two programs of anti-virus software, which I do - Win Defender and Avast (I guess they may conflict).  I tend to want to keep Avast, but would like to know if I have to keep Win Defender instead, because it is a Win a Win system program.  If I've got this me getting rid of one of them, is it recommended that I both uninstall and then reinstall one of them?

A person help would be appreciated!

    Thnx, Dharma

WHAT I HAVE: Win XP Media Center, MS Office 7 Professional (used at home), IE8, Outlook 7, HP w / 32-bit dual core processor, latest version of Avast & Win Defender, Srvc Pack 2 and 3 (although I know that I don't need 3 because I have not upgraded to Win 7, but it won't let me uninstall it!) and regularly updates Win.

PS Please ask questions if you have, before you answer, so it will be less likely that I'll get the wrong answers that don't relate directly my questions! (Can say you that has already happened?  (LOL).

You pouvez have a type of rootkit of malware infection.  Rootkits can transform and change of identity on your OS (and are difficult to detect and remove) and many computing professionals recommend a reinstall of the operating system in order to ensure that the rootkit is removed.

Follow the suggestions in the Brian - post.  The link that he provided is an excellent reference.   If you have a rootkit, TDSS Killer or one of the other programs listed pourrait be able to remove it.

    You can also:

You can get free help in the removal of malware from MS Support here: http://supportservices.microsoft.com/support/services/virus_malware_removal

If you are in North America, you can call the MS Support to 866-727-2338 for help with infections of virus and spyware.

For international information see your subsidiary local technical support site.

Or get assistance from Avast at: http://www.avast.com/support

You have SP3 on your Win XP OS and if you plan to switch to Win 7 make sure that your processor and RAM will manage Win 7... with your history of technology issues a reformatting/clean install of Win 7 would be a good idea.  Because of the possibility of conflicts, I do not recommend using Windows Defender with Avast or any other resident AV program.  Suggest uninstall you Windows Defender in Control Panel.  MSE and several other AV programs require the removal of Windows Defender in XP (or disabling the Defender in Vista and Win 7).

  • A PC can operate effectively WITHOUT the need for anti-virus software?

Come to think if the first PC I've had and the worms Blaster threatened everyone...

I do not just shoot when to install my anti-virus software, I need to close my Windows Firewall... 2 + 2 = and Yes, when I did I got the virus of shit...

If only I had not installed the Norton... do you not think that any PC can operate without the need for anti-virus software knowing that you must close

the Windows firewall and use theres rather...?

    I wonder!

    Hello

It would be unwise to try to start without antivirus/antispyware are has just too many real threats and
methods for malware to attack the system. If you attempt to do if of course you have redundant and
    current backups.

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leave the file system, Web,.
Operational network (Script and behavior are also recommended in Ver 6 +).

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
    right of IE)

Two versions of Avast are available 6.x and 4.8 x

Avast - home - free - 6.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you
    disabled - click OK
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Avast 4.8 x - home - free - stop shields, you don't need except leaving Standard, Web,.
and the network running. (Double-click the blue icon - look OK. - upper left - Shields details
    Finish those you don't use).
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here
or use Google to see how to remove.

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever think malware and that
would be unusual with Avast and occasional Prevx running with the exception of a low level cookie
(not much), to UPDATE and then run it as a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they
never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

From April 2014, no security/more operating system patches released at Microsoft (for the most part) for Windows XP.  It's a BONE death in the eyes of its creator.

Your anti-virus software may or may not be supported - which depends on its own end of life such as decided by its supplier, and even if it is a Microsoft product, is not directly related to the lifecycle of Windows XP (you can say that as Windows XP came with no native antivirus/antimalware features.)

What I have to buy extra (Norton or McAfee) anti-virus or is the antivirus in Windows Security Center strong enough? I have McAfee on my computer, but my subscription has expired. I wonder if it is necessary to update? or if the antivirus and security installed in the Windows Security Center is all I really need. and everything is a little more kill?

    Hi RevStevieB,

Windows Security Center helps improve your computer's security by checking the status of several security essentials on your computer, including firewall settings, Windows automatic updating, anti-malware software settings.

If Windows detects a problem with any of these security essentials (for example, if your antivirus program has expired), Center security displays a notification and places a Security Center icon in the notification area.

I recommend you to download & install the antivirus or security software up-to-date so that it works correctly.

You can also download & run Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer.

    Hope the helps of information.

You cannot save your programs - a clean installation wipe everything from the hard drive.  Programs need to be reinstalled (they cannot be copied or saved) - and you probably wouldn't do anyway because there is a good chance that some of the infected files can reside in these same programs.  The ONLY way to avoid this is to get your hands on a real Windows Vista Installation disc, so we can attempt a repair system/upgrade where your programs will be preserved (and we don't know yet if that will completely solve the problem of infection but it probably will restore the functionality at least for a certain period of time).
