You must have a password for an administrator account in El Capitan. Yes, technically you can, but it doesn't do much.

Have you tried to leave the old password empty, because what is the old password?

If you can't do this, try to create a new user with a password and make them admin.

If you are successful in creating a new Admin user, then you can use for work that requires a password. Just downgrade your old standard user.
