Assign a letter to drive/path to an external hard drive.

I have a hard drive to external with the files that it contains, and it does not appear in 'Computer' so I spent in disk management and tried to assign a path/drive letter and when I go to that option is grayed out and won't allow.

Hi ConorM,

If the external hard drive is not detected, try to connect the external drive to another PC to check if the device works.

To resolve this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps:

Important The method below mentioned steps show you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) how to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

1. click on Start, type regedit in start search and press enter.

2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. on the Edit menu, click delete, and then click OK.

4. search for and then click the LowerFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. on the Edit menu, click delete, and then click OK.

6. exit the registry editor.

7 restart the computer

After restarting the computer, check if the drivers are getting detected.

Hope this information is useful.

  • NEW EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE IS NOT RECOGNIZED IN WINDOWS 8, BUT IS PRESENT IN DEVICE MANAGER AND IN DISK MANAGEMENT (NOT ME LEAVES NO ASSIGN A NEW DRIVE LETTER PATH)

I buy a new drive external hard 2T hard drive (plug-n-play) for my new Windows System. When I launch the device I have here a beep let me know the unit is plugged on my USB (3.0 or 2.0 as it is backward compatible) but when I go to my computer, the device does not appear, and as such I can't use it. When I go to the devices it is recognized and works apparently correctly. After some browsing on the net, I was told that I have to assign a drive letter. Thus entering disk management, the unit is, properly partitioned. However, when I right click on the appropriate partition gout the menu to change the disk path appears but is grayed out, and as such I can't use to assign a path drive letter. I checked to see if I run as administrator which I believe that I am by default when I first activated Windows. Is there anyone who has experienced this same problem or know a fix?

    Thank you very much

    Ron

Hi, I solved the problem with help. Because Device Manager wouldn't let me not use the format option I deleted the main partition by right click on the partition and then the wizard formatted the partition to NTFS, as I store a few large recording Daw. During the process of the wizard automatically assigned a letter from path of reader (e) but you can choose other. The drive was originally formatted FAT 32. The main problem I had was in the drop-down list that appears when I just clicked on the primary partition was options of Format and assign new drive letter have been greyed out... the only option left to delete the partition and reformat the drive. It's a new external so I didn't not lose all content.

  • Disconnected (removed) external hard drive still exploring and using drive letter - how to remove?

    Dear community,

I recently removed an external hard drive of my computer laptop windows 7, I guess it was not not ready to 'remove Saveli' it at that time. The hard drive itself is fine, but the icon remained in windows Explorer because it is disconnected. I manually assigned the drive letter Q on the drive before, and it always appears like that, since this disconnect. When I click on it, there is of course a mistake ("Q is not accessible. "Access denied"). When I plug the hard drive it is listed in another letter (E), the 'Phantom' to Q drive is not affected by it at all.
It (the ghost drive) does not appear in the computer/disk management manager and I can also not reassign the letter Q on the original hard drive (or any other - is not in the list!).
I would use the letter Q again to the hard drive (my paths and associations of are consistent) and want to get rid of the ghost car. Any ideas how?
    Thanks in advance,
    Philipp

    FYI
It's great that the problem corrected itself, but for general reference or other who can run in the ii, how to fix a ' stuck or ghost hand "is to remove its entry in the registry key below and then open a new market or restart.  This problem is relatively rare, but sometimes and still does not resolve itself.
(Note this drive letter Q is used by Office, click Run and sometimes mysteriously appears for this reason, unlike your situation.)

On my Windows 7 laptop, I briefly moved an external hard drive to a USB port to another and then back.

The reader is referred to as F, as it was originally, but since the temporary move the path for some files now show that E.

This disrupts programs such as Adobe Premiere Elements. It always hurts new information loaded in the disc I load that is in F, but the said path E. The file is clearly on record.

    1. What is the brand and model of the computer?

    2. what security software is installed on the computer?

You can follow these steps to assign a letter to the external drive and check if that helps.

Option 3 - Select the 'manage '. If a warning appears asking for your permission to continue, click on the OK"" button.

4 - Choose "Disk management" in the left column of the computer management window. Find the USB in the list that appears in the gray bottom of the center column.

5-click right on the part of the screen that represents the USB key, and then click the option "letter of change of road and railways.

6 button - click on the 'change' in the window that opens.

    7. ensure that the radio button to "assign the following drive letter:" is selected. To the right of the present is a drop-down list with the drive letters currently not assigned to all of the drives on your local system. If you are not on a network, choose the drive letter you want for your USB key and then click on the OK"" button.

  • cannot change the drive letter of the external hard drive in XP

I bought an Iomega 1 TB external hard drive and I can not change the drive letter.  I have a click right on my computer and select manage.  When I click on disk management, it does not recognize the outside.  The weird part is that it appears in my computer and I can access the drive without problem.  I disconnected the drive of my XP machine and connected to my Vista laptop and I was able to access it through the management of the disks without problem.  Iomega support claims that it is most likely a problem with my XP machine.  Any ideas how to solve this problem?

  • External hard drive USB, not received a drive letter in Vista 64-Bit

I do not use my BeyondMicro 160 G external hard drive a lot just to make occasional backups, well this time was different.  I have powered the drive, plugged the USB cable into my PC and normal tone was heard, but NO drive letter is assigned to the drive.  In fact I couldn't find anywhere in my computer that the unit was even detected.  I Visa Ultimate 64-bit, I tried to uninstall the drivers in the Device Manager and rebooted and still no external drive, any suggestions?

    Konala Hello,

    Thank you for your response.

If the external hard drive not detected below are some steps to solve the problem:

You can check if the device is compatible with Windows Vista by visiting the Windows Vista Compatibility Center, which includes a list of drivers, hardware and applications that are compatible with Windows Vista.

For reference, the link to the Windows Vista Compatibility Center is included below:

Then, if the external hard drive is not detected in Device Manager, please check if the external drive is detected in the management of the computer:

You can check this by going to: start then click on computer
When it is connected and switched on, the drive should appear as a drive letter on the computer (ie: drive E:, F: or another letter.) An Autorun window may also appear if the drive is detected.

If the external drive does not appear, please check the following:

    · Check the power supply and check if it works normally.

  • Lightroom 5, letter from the external HARD disk drive

I use LR 5 and store my images on an external drive 'f' raw Once I inserted an SD card on my PC from Win10, and he received the letter F on the SD drive. Later, when I connected my external drive where I store my raw, the PC files it G. Since then, I am unable to get LR5 to locate photos. I went into disk, reassigned management to F the drive letter for the drive external hard, then back to G since LR5 thought he was now drive G. other than the location manually each individual records, seems to have no other choice. Any help would be appreciated

The simplest solution is to use disk management to reassign the external drive the desired letter.

My recommendation is to choose a letter 'J' so that readers SD or other do not continue to change the letter on you.

After that you have the letter assigned, go to Lightroom file Board.

If the folder hierarchy does not appear as it does explore, right click on a folder and select 'Show the parent'. Repeat if necessary.

Then 'move' the first folder on the drive with the new letter. Everything under this first file will be automatically updated.

  • Windows 7 reassigned by external hard drive letters and PE8 do not accept the new letter

Sometimes when I move my external hard drives around, Windows will eventually assign different letters for the readers. It seems that all the other programs I use understand how to switch to the new drives when looking for files, but PE8 doesn't. He asked me where the N:files/video/movie.prel file is located. When I find the file in O:files/video/movie.prel. Click on enter the PE8 returns with one does not find the file error and asks us to locate it again. I reinstalled PE8 in the past to deal with the problem, but is there something easier to do.

The trick is to tell Windows to permanently assign a drive letter to this drive so that it will not assume that this is a new drive, every time you turn it on.

This discussion to Muvipix.com tells you how.
