I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-Bit on a Sony Vaio. Worked great, seems awsome and rolls GOOS GOOS, for a new operating system. I decided to use the BitLocker feature that I wanted to use from Vista Ultimate, which was incredibly dificult unlike BitLocker in Windows 7, which is extremely simple to use. So simple in fact, I encrypted my external hard drive Verbatim 160 Gig where the original BACKUP files are with ALL my original documents, settings and files of the company are located. I haven't used a USB key, or don't have I recorded the RecoveryKey, I printed and completely loses it, I remember perfectly well the password I used. Problem is I have NOW, I can't ACCESS MY HARD DRIVE! When I try to access the hard drive it asked me not the password recovery key. Please help me, im in deep poopie. I wish I could change the world, if only I could find a diapper big enough to hold so many things...

Hey thanks for the reply Kev, but I must say that I did and didn't. The new Windows 7 operating system has this feature built-in and it is much easier to use. So yes I did it, but I made using windows 7 have where, instead of download all the files, I just insert the original DVD of WIndows 7, I restart my PC and follow the instructions of recovery of BitLocker recovery key, and voila. The problem is that I've NEVER stored on this particular external hard drive recovery key. BTW: I tried to follow the steps mentioned by Mr. Vijay but inconsistent tool with my operating system (Windows 7 64-Bit) it only works with Vista (not 150 percent certain but close). Please correct me if Im wrong. I wish I could change the world, if only I could find a diapper big enough to hold so many things...

  • Upgrade to Windows 8 and now cannot access my external hard drive

I just changed OS from Vista to Windows 8 on July 3-4. Everything seems to work properly but when I tried to access my external Western Digital HD, it tells me access is denied. I copied this before making the switch: family videos and photos, documents, statements, etc., and now I can't access the drive. The drive appears on my computer but when I click on it it gives me an error message that I don't have permission. I don't see how that's possible, because I am the administrator. It is a home computer and I don't need all this security {deleted}.  The only thing I can think is that I didn't log on the computer when I used Vista but now I connect with Windows 8. The connection ID would be the reason why I can't access the drive? I tried to make the public drive and giving my self control of training, but I get refused every time. Someone at - it ideas? I'll be upset if I lost access to everything on my external.

Thank you for your help. I think that I finally thought to it. By clicking on the icon my computer, it would show all available drives. One was removable storage drive I: WD Unlocker but it is only 7MB. After the installation of Windows 8, I had to click this drive tell him to unlock my WD J: drive. Once I did, I could see the folders and files but couldn't access it. I clicked on the I: drive and select Properties. He says that the disc was not shared so I said to share. Then I looked at the permissions and he says: read-only. Once I changed it to shared with full access, I can access now fully my WD J: will try to restart now and see if I still have access. Thanks again for your help.

  • Installed Win 7, cannot access encrypted external hard drive?

Well, here's my sad story of misfortune: I copied all my files (encrypted with EFS, I think) on a hard disk, and then reformatted and installed Windows 7 Professional; not surprisingly, I can't access anything on the disk, because it is linked to my old XP account, now recognized as a unknown user by 7.
After reading here, I think that I will well and truly up the Creek unless I want to pay hundreds to a data recovery company. Is there anything to do? Thanks in advance.

You would be wasting your money. EFS is as good as you thought it was when you your files encrypted. Really it protects them from prying eyes.

I do not use homegroups, but 'true' to share, so I don't know how this is supposed to work with homegroups. But usually he should share a drive or folder, first before you can access it from another machine. (for example, click on the drive/folder properties and go to the sharing tab)

  • Hello. I created a folder music on my external hard drive connected to my asus router.  I can now access the music through my media library.  How can I change the folder when I make new purchases to iTunes easily without doing it one by one

I created a folder music on an external hard drive connected to my asus router.  I copied my music from my iTunes library in this folder access and can now my kodi media network.  How I updated the folder when I do new iTunes purchase without having to do it one by one thanks

You can use a backup tool that updates only modified files.  You don't say what kind of computer you use.

ITunes is actively using media on the external hard drive so you can replace it. Simply copy the media to one other player does not have iTunes it use it.  iTunes is probably still using media to your internal drive.

    Hello meatindustries,

What operating system do we use?

The answer to this question, we can pursue various troubleshooting methods.

There are many third-party data recovery utilities available for free online.  You can search for these using your favorite search engine to find one that you like.

Let us know the operating system you are using and we can go forward from there.

  • After Vista update cannot find the external hard drive, AutoPlay does not work, and new unusable disk appears under my computer

After Vista update cannot find the external hard drive, AutoPlay does not work, and new unusable disk appears under my computer. Also I can't 'manage' my computer because I do not have "permissions". I tried a fix he 45071 and it did nothing.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) (including free evaluation versions are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.) If NIS has been installed for 3 years, you have NIS update at least once and maybe twice (e.g., NIS 2009 > NIS 2010 > NIS 2011).

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) viaControl Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of NIS 2011 (using your product ID, if need be) & reboot. CF. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

NOTE: Do NOT activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate (Norton) until you get a prompt "no update more".

    8. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

    9. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run that set it by DEFAULT and modes and AGGRESSIVE. [1]

    10. restart once again & test.

NB: Installation KB971029 disables AutoRun/autoplay on USB connected but not 'brilliant media' external drives (i.e., CDs & DVDs). See http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/archive/2011/02/08/deeper-insight-into-the-security-advisory-967940-update.aspx

  • Password protect an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule

I have a WD passport external hard drive connected to my time capsule, so my wife and I can easily share files. I have the external hard drive connected through the locked time capsules WiFi network so someone in the House can not access however if they walked the time capsule and not plugged in the external hard drive they could walk away with it. When I try to password protect external hard drive then time capsule may not recognise, and so I can't use it as an external hard drive that is shared. No one knows how, to password protect the external hard drive connected to the time capsule as if someone physically stole the external hard drive it would be locked, but have yet still recognizable by Time Capsule when I plugged?

    Hope that makes sense.

The only way to do is to encrypt the files on the computer.

And you both use the same password. Unfortunately, this probably means that you can not share files directly... The TC is not a SIN... never, it was designed for this purpose so there no controls to help admin file sharing.

If you create a DMG file on WD drive that encrypt you and you can copy files to and from... but only one at a time.

Another method would be to use a specific software... Watch chronosync.

    http://www.econtechnologies.com/Chronosync/guide-sync-with-disk-image.html

I don't him have not run in this configuration... so, you have to experiment if it manages what you want.

I think that there will always be limitations on concurrent access from multiple computers.

  • Had a project done with first elements 11.  All media files and PRE files were in the same folder on an external hard drive.  Received a new computer, loaded first items 11 (which of course doesn't recognize not all previous projects as it is)

Had a project done using first items 11 (the file exported and posted on youtube).  All the media files and PRE files associated with this project were located in the same folder on an external hard drive.  Got a new computer, responsible for first 11 elements (which of course doesn't recognize not all previous projects because it is a new installation) and now cannot open the original project to make some adjustments (connected to the external hard drive of course)...  Even tried to open the last saved auto program as well, no luck.  Just get a shell of the original project, but no real media file is passed in. Then get a prompt asking you where the file "rendering-3090026..." (20 More digits) is located.  Looking for C drive and external hard drive without success. Help!

Which operating systems are involved - old and new?

The external drive has the same drive letter on the new computer as it did when it was used on the other computer?

Where are the video preview and the old led, Audio preview files compared to new? See Edit Menu/preferences/Scratch discs?

Are all the place where is the file... messages just to render files? If all are for rendering files, what happens if you click ignore for their

messages? Can you enter into the project and render it again if necessary and proceed with the project?

Please see the bulletin. With the above information, we will decide which way to go? It seems that a media disconnect situation has developed in

  • Access my external hard drive to Windows on my new Mac

    Hello world

I am a new user of Mac Yosemite, recently moved from Windows and I am a passionate photographer

All my photos are saved on two external hard drives of laptop computer Windows

Is it possible to access outside data by car and it is hard on the Mac

I keep reading things on the partition and FAT32 or the disc running utilities to reformat, but I'll lose all the images on the external hard drive

[What should I do to be able to view my images on Mac, I will then load in Lightroom for editing [the forest of Lightroom] that I'm very good]

  • User with limited XP Home Edition privleges can not access an external hard drive

I can't set up an external hard drive in Windows XP Home Edition so that a user who has 'Limited' privleges can access.  The user receives the access denied message.  I tried to configure this by starting in safe mode.  I shared the unit with everyone.  If I'm the administrator user then it can access the drive.  The troubling question is that this system has been configured with the user having limited privleges as well as access to the external drive in the past.  I recently removed Norton antivirus and replaced by MS Security Essentials and I'm so glad I did.  But now it's problem arose.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably just need to change permissions for access of the disk and/or subfolders.  The following article describes how to do this:

"How to set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and folders in Windows XP"

The bad news is that this article was written for XP Pro and you have XP Home.  This means that the 'Security' tab, which is at the heart of the management of permissions is not present during the implementation of the properties of file or a folder on your computer. (Or y at - it an option to disable Simple file sharing).  The good news is that if you start your computer in safe mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when your computer starts) and log on as a user with administrator privileges, you can then obtain access to the security"" tab.  Once you have access to this tab, you can give "Everyone" permission to all of the disk if you wish.  Once you set the permissions as you like them, you can restart your machine in Normal mode.
