Attached storage WRT1900ACS issue

Hi all

Just picked up the WRT1900ACS yesterday and am in love but I have a question about external storage attached to the unit. The router has the capability to format the disc attached? If this isn't the case, the reader (3 TB), the format must be formatted in?

Thank you

Hi, InfernoST. Thanks for choosing the Linksys WRT1900ACS. We appreciate that you enjoyed. The router does not have the ability to format the attached drive. The functionality of the supported file systems only supports FAT, NTFS, and HFS format.

  • Virtualize a physical machine with SAN-attached storage

    Hello

We are looking to virtualize a physical machine in W2k3 with SAN attached storage.  Ideally we would like storage as RDM due to migration, is possible without destroying all the data that is held on this subject?

    TIA

    David

Just use converter for local disks.

Then map your SAN disk to your ESX (masking of storage).

Rescan ESX to see the new LUN (under the storage card).

Finally add the virtual machine to the RDM disk (use virtual mode to use instant VMware).

  • Slow VMFS / Rescan HBAS with fiber-attached storage

    Hi all

I use ESXi 4.1, build 260247 with fiber storage attached my NetApp 3240 controllers on the version 8.0.2.  I'm trying to use plugin 1.0 host OnCommand of NetApp to save my VMs.  For those who don't know, doing essential software works with vSphere and the table to create screenshots instant table based and replicate to the Dominican Republic.

    It works very well.

When I have a problem is the restoration of VMs.  The restore process is slow.  Using the same software, what is done is to present table for the ESX Server hanging and set up the data store.  This also works, but VMware must rescan the HBAS and VMFS several times.  Because of the long duration to rescan the HBAS / VMFS, this editing process may take 15 minutes or more and seems rather excessive to me.

Does anyone have any ideas why the rescan is slow or it is normal and just something I have to deal with?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Michael.

You have the ability to limit the maximum number of LUNs?  For each host, go to the Configuration tab, select the disk and get off at Disk.MaxLUN.  The default value is 256, but if your maximum lun number is much lower than that, drop this value down to speed up scans.  See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-4-esxi-installable-vcenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.config_fc.doc_41/esx_san_config/managing_san_systems/t_change_the_number_of_luns_scanned_using_disk.maxlun.html

If the LUNS are contiguous, you can also change the Disk.SupportSpareLUN from 1 to 0.  Who told him to stop as soon as a logical unit number is missing.  It is bad if you have LUNs 2,3,6 because you never see lun 6.  See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-4-esxi-installable-vcenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.config_fc.doc_41/esx_san_config/managing_san_systems/t_change_the_number_of_luns_scanned_using_disk.maxlun.html

  • Problem with Direct-attached storage

    Hello

I have a Dell PE 2900 with a MD1000 attached by the PERC 6/E.  I'm currently adding the MD1000 storage which is RAID 6.  In the vSphere Client, it indicates the ability of the device as 4.72 TB.  However, when I walk through the add storage Wizard, he told me that only 739,99 GB is available?  This table is new and it has just been initialized.  There is no data, or the partitions on this subject.

Does anyone have any idea why it won't let me use all storage?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Actually, 2TBs - 512 bytes. That 512 bytes is very important to consider.

  • Western Digital 2 to my direct book DT RJ45 Network Attached Storage

I wonder if anyone else has problems with the Vista SP2 attempt to install the driver for this device (Driver ID 20438948)?

When an attempt is made to install this driver, the installation fails.  Unfortunately, it corrupts the Vista SP2 operating system because shadow copies no longer able to do so and when a restart is attempted, the restart will fail with a 0x0000009F - DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD.  Recovery involves a reboot in the repair console, then a restore of the system, reboot followed.  Tent a system without enter repair console restore fails because of damage to the operating system.

Once this is done, and the system reboots, shadow copy and restarts on own work.

I must stress that without this driver recommended, the drive is accessed as a network attached device or if specific folders are mapped as drive letters.

Thanks for reading time and possible responses.

    Hello

I would like to inform you that, given that the pilot exited WDC they would need to update the driver, because we provided them with Vista Service Pack 2 specification, they are responsible for the update of drivers.

  • Linksys NAS200 2Bay SATA 2Port Network Attached Storage is not compatible with Windows 7

Searching for answers, I found this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=Linksys%20NAS200%202Bay%20SATA%202Port%20Network%20Attached%20Storage&v=Linksys&uid=NAS200&l=en-US&pf=0&pi=5&c=Networking&sc=Network%20Attached%20Storage&os=32-bit

Aparently this device is not compatible with Windows 7.

I have one of those NASs with 2 SATA hard drives of 500 GB searched... I have all my music, movies, photos, and all of our backups of document on this device.  Because I have set up as a RAID array, I don't think I can remove the discs and put them in something to get my "stuff".  We used to use Win XP but recently upgraded both our machines to Win 7.

If someone has been able to find a way to get to their stuff on one of those Linksys NAS200 devices without finding another WinXP machine somewhere?

    Hi Ken Mizell,

If the device is not supported in Windows 7, you need to use a computer that is running Windows XP to move the data to a new storage device.

  • Simple with VM storage Migration issues

I have a unique virtual machine in my cluster 6.x that is having a problem of migration of storage. If I try to migrate to any other data store, I get "cannot complete the creation of file operation" which gives me virtually no results and I was not able to locate all newspapers host or vcenter which will tell us what is in fact a failure. Migrate from 20 other virtual machines without problems and an another vm has migrated to the data store at several levels, I want this virtual machine. I also tried to move it to just a datastore k 15 directly with the same error. I was not able to get a maintenance window in order to turn off the virtual machine and see if I can migrate it cold. I have migrated to different hosts in my group and get the same errors. VM snapshots and consolidated very well and seems to be about all other related storage containers business as usual and has no irregular performance.

HP Gen9 blades with 3PAR on FC storage. Using ISO custom and all that Jazz. I have a lot of environments hosts 6.x without any problem. Definitely a problem with the virtual machine.

Unfortunately, the question lies in the damaged files from VM. I'll have to rebuild the virtual machine.

  • subnet VMkernel iSCSI for direct-attached storage

    Hello

I have two hosts esxi 6.0 that I connect to a shared via iSCSI storage. I followed this document technical http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-multipathing-configuration-software-iSCSI-port-binding.pdf#sthash.7bztDoAS.dpf to configure interfaces iSCSI on the esxi with binding ports host. No problem.

I use HP MSA 2040 with a dual controller and I'll connect two hosts directly on the shared storage. As for the hardware, according to the documents on best practices, it is recommended to follow a vertical subneting for ports of controllers. However, I have not found no requirement for iSCSI ports in vmware, all of the examples I found configure each vmkernel port in a different subnet, as I did:

    vSwitch0

    iSCSI1 - vmk2 - 192.168.1.11 (unused vmk3)

    iSCSI2 - vmk3 - 192.168.2.11 (unused vmk2)

So, my question is vmkernel ports are in different subnets? or could they be in the same subnet with no difference performance wise?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

in your case, because you are trying to achieve Multipathing to iSCSI Software initiator, the vmkernel ports should be in the same subnet.

  • Design of new environment VSphere, VMotion, Storage, NIC issues

I have a new environment I design. The plan is to have two host 5.1 running VSphere. Each host will have multiple servers requiring HA. I intend to have an additional Buffalo storage server. Here are my questions.

So that HA using Vmotion, will it store the data store of the virtual machine on the storage server? Or the data store would be on the host where the virtual machine, and then if this host fails it copies on?

NIC how would I need per server for HA? I count at least 3. One for the network traffic, management and SAN. All I'm missing?

OK, so if I put my two hosts in a HA cluster and I have my VM installed on a separate storage server and one of my crashes VSPhere hosts will be able to restart my virtual computer on the other host?

Yes, assuming that both hosts have access to the storage and HA is configured correctly.

And VMotion is just for a scheduled maintenance?

Not only for maintenance, but also for example load management/distribution.

  • Netspp old storage and issues of Cluster VMWARE

    Hello

I saw a former NETAPP FAS 2020 connected storage and confiigured with the cluster of 4.1

Customer is polanning to install new vcenter and ESXi 5 new hosts and want to migrate virtual machines to new Cluster and get rid of the old because of some problems of old hosts

I heard some mouth sharing old storage Netapp Storage can cause some strange problems and can cause some virtual machines get corrupted

is that correct? strange problems known?

Sharing storage should be the correct way to migrate virtual machines safely to the news of ESXi

It's exactly the way I use to migrate virtual machines to a cluster. I've done a couple of times (also with 3.5/4.x/5.0 storage Netapp and ESXi) and never had corrupted VMs. what VMFS is designed for.

Of course, I would not share a LUN to ESXi hosts between different vCenters as final configuration but for migration, it is reasonable.

    Just know that:

-Do not upgreade to VMFS5 until all ESXi4 hosts are disconnected.

-Storage i/o Control does not work across multiple vCenters.

-migrate does not mean "vMotion" but: power off > remove inventory > add to the inventory > voltage (of course...)

  • storage transfer issue

    I have 2 cells in a cluster.

They are configured with local volumes for the storage of transfer.

I want to use the shared nfs volume.

How do I do that? I understand that all editing volume causes the service to fail.

so should what I do to fix this?

    Thank you

    The transfer space

    / opt/VMware/vCloud-Director/Data/Transfer

should contain only the items that are current transfers.  If you know all transfers are stopped then the files to the location should have been removed from vcd (but sometimes they are not) - if stop you each cell graciously so files are just leftovers if I understand.

If you want to be a little safe.

Following the shutdown of a cell, you can rename the current Director of transfer to/data/transferOld or something and set up a new for the NFS.

  • Storage vMotion issue License - license of moving between ESX Hosts 4.1?

I have a question about Storage vMotion with ESX 4.1 license.

One of my environments ESX 3.5 existing consists of 10 ESX 3.5 hosts - 8 ESX 3.5 servers Standard and 2 ESX 3.5 Enterprise servers.  I use a centralized license server (I think that's the correct term).

I found that I can "move" the vMotion (and vMotion) Storage capacity of two of my 10 servers that only two of them are enabled for vMotion, both.  I do this by topic under VI Client-> select the host ESX-> Configuration-> network-> properties-> VMkernel-> Edit-> toggle the box "VMotion" activated-> OK.   I guess that by doing this, that I'm actually just spend my licenses 'ESX Enterprise' between the hosts.

Be able to run Storage vMotion on one or two guests at a time is a lot for a few times a year I need to reconfigure my back-end storage.

    Two Questions:

    1. this use is technically legal in a perspective of VMware licenses?

    2. now, I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 and wonder if I'll be able to keep doing this?  I have read that ESX 4.x got rid of the centralized server license model, so not sure if I could 'move' licenses around like that... In fact since vMotion is now included in Standard Edition, I guess I could 'pull out' through a license only one ESX Enterprise server in order to obtain the license of storage vMotion.

I let my support/subscription lapse for as long it is cheaper to purchase new licenses rather than paying for support costs with retroactive effect on my existing licenses.   The price difference between Standard and Enterprise is large (3 times the cost) that I don't think I can swing is business licenses for all of my guests past the bean counters, where the reason for this post.

    Reflections and comments?

Each host has a license key number. You can apply a new license key to a host, and it is immediately activated. I guess you would be technically violate licensing for seconds as a license number was recorded at two hosts. There is a place in the vSphere client to "assign a new license key to this host. When a license key has been assigned, it remains as a choice, then you can simply choose the functionality licensed one and below the other.

  • How WD My Book World Edition Network Attached Storage backup with Vista backup

    Hello
I have a dandy new My Book World Edition which is recognized by Vista and to which I have traced some readers. I'm trying to get a copy of Vista to 64 backup to save a backup on this device, but it does not work. I hope someone here can have successfully addressed this. I tried the backup on mapped drives, but they do not seem to be listed under the local computer. I then select the My Book World Edition device networking (by browing to it), and even if I correctly enter the usernam and password, backup of Vista tells me that it can't open the backup on her drive.

Thanks for any help in setting this up.
