Virtualize a physical machine with SAN-attached storage

Hello

We are looking to virtualize a physical machine in W2k3 with SAN attached storage.  Ideally we would like storage as RDM due to migration, is possible without destroying all the data that is held on this subject?

TIA

David

Just use converter for local disks.

Then map your SAN disk to your ESX (masking of storage).

Rescan ESX to see the new LUN (under the storage card).

Finally add the virtual machine to the RDM disk (use virtual mode to use instant VMware).

  • Cannot virtualize my physical machine with Vista 64-bit

    Hello

This is very similar to the previous discussion...

I built a x 64 bit windows vista from my physical laptop system image.  It is a HP Pavilion DV5-1253 CL model.  I have Windows Vista 64-bit installed on it.

But when I try and either build a new x 64 machine, or try to load this x 64 vm, I have done, I get this:

Software virtualization is incompatible with the long mode on this platform. Long mode off. Without the support of the long mode, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code.

    What is going on?

If it is not supported, what should I do to get Vista running on it?  I don't have the provider's Setup diskettes.  The OS is on the hard drive in a recovery for purposes of recovery partition.  Do I have to buy a 32-bit HP or elsewhere to make this work?

I looked at the BIOS setting and don't see anything about Virtualization or in long mode.

    Scott

I'm afraid there is Word options available since it is a hardware problem. You must either upgrade the current system with a CPU (most BIOS) that supports VT - x or get a new PC.

  • 4 virtual servers in a single physical Machine with a physical LAN card, how possible to assign 4 different unique to each virtual server IP address?

Can someone tell me please, that each server Machine should have an IP address of seprtae to connect the client computers. If we have 4 Server virtual machines in VMware in a physical server with a LAN card with only a MAC address. How can assign us the same IP address to all computers in Virtual Server 4? While we need four IP addresses of different/seprate for each server computer to connect to client computers. can someone explain to me please. (will be greate if you can give me a few examples). Thanks in advance.

You will need four different IP for each virtual machine, and each VM will have a different MAC address generated automatically by vSphere.

Assuming you are using vSphere, I highly recommend you take a look at this document: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf

  • Storage VMotion for a virtual machine with SAN LUNS attached to it. They are all going to?

    Hello

Don't know which section of this post, so sorry if its wrong.

We are eager to Storage VMotion of our SQL VM. These are our SAN 3040 of NetApp. In the virtual machine (windows 2003), they have also connected to the network SAN NetApp 3040 LUN.

What I need to know is, if we tried to do the other (NetApp 3170) SAN Storage VMotion problems due to the fact that its storage not only fast vMotioning of VMs its self, but also the LUN or LUNS will remain on 3040, and the virtual machines moved to the 3170?

    Who is?

If more info should help just shout!

    Cheers in advance...

    RDM's Raw card device.

As I posted earlier, you need to move data to the Raw LUN for LUN Raw new either through data copy inside the VM if you map the new LUNS brutes who him or copy.

  • Convert a physical machine with attached LUN

    Hi all

Need to convert a physical server (windows 2003) that has 2 LUNS attached but I'm not shure about the correct procedure to do this.

I think that the two options I have are:

1 stop of the database on the phsysical Server service.

    Clon hot server

Map the phsysical (database) LUNS on my esx servers

Add LUNS to the server virtualized with RDM

cold 2 clone the server whose only the operating system disk

Map the phsysical (database) LUNS on my esx servers

Add LUNS to the server virtualized with RDM

This procedure are not? You have no experience on something like that?

    Thanks in advance

So it seems that my procedures are 'almost' correct, right?.

    Yes

Your suggestion on the subject of convert SAN disk was my first choice, but do not have enough storage available to it virtualizes.

Right, this could be a reason.

Another reason could be the time required for the entire conversion.

  • P2V physical Machine with NetApp Lun?

Someone at - it never try P2V physical server that has iSCSI LUN attached?  I have several that I need of P2V, all Windows 2000 Server or 2003.  I need to make the lun virtual disk when I P2V servers.

    Advice would be very helpful.

    Thank you

    -geob

The best option I can suggest is to use VMconverter to convert the server and local all disks (excluding the iSCSI LUN) then create a new hard drive for your VM which is of a size equal or superior to your iSCSI storage space.

Configure the iSCSI storage in the virtual machine, and then use a (free) software as Robocopy to copy the files on the new hard disk on your VM.

This process will take only marginally longer than with a VMconverter.

  • Problem with Direct-attached storage

    Hello

I have a Dell PE 2900 with a MD1000 attached by the PERC 6/E.  I'm currently adding the MD1000 storage which is RAID 6.  In the vSphere Client, it indicates the ability of the device as 4.72 TB.  However, when I walk through the add storage Wizard, he told me that only 739,99 GB is available?  This table is new and it has just been initialized.  There is no data, or the partitions on this subject.

Does anyone have any idea why it won't let me use all storage?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Actually, 2TBs - 512 bytes. That 512 bytes is very important to consider.

  • Slow VMFS / Rescan HBAS with fiber-attached storage

    Hi all

I use ESXi 4.1, build 260247 with fiber storage attached my NetApp 3240 controllers on the version 8.0.2.  I'm trying to use plugin 1.0 host OnCommand of NetApp to save my VMs.  For those who don't know, doing essential software works with vSphere and the table to create screenshots instant table based and replicate to the Dominican Republic.

    It works very well.

When I have a problem is the restoration of VMs.  The restore process is slow.  Using the same software, what is done is to present table for the ESX Server hanging and set up the data store.  This also works, but VMware must rescan the HBAS and VMFS several times.  Because of the long duration to rescan the HBAS / VMFS, this editing process may take 15 minutes or more and seems rather excessive to me.

Does anyone have any ideas why the rescan is slow or it is normal and just something I have to deal with?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Michael.

Does anyone have any ideas why the rescan is slow or it is normal and just something I have to deal with?

You have the ability to limit the maximum number of LUNs?  For each host, go to the Configuration tab, select the disk and get off at Disk.MaxLUN.  The default value is 256, but if your maximum lun number is much lower than that, drop this value down to speed up scans.  See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-4-esxi-installable-vcenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.config_fc.doc_41/esx_san_config/managing_san_systems/t_change_the_number_of_luns_scanned_using_disk.maxlun.html

If the LUNS are contiguous, you can also change the Disk.SupportSpareLUN from 1 to 0.  Who told him to stop as soon as a logical unit number is missing.  It is bad if you have LUNs 2,3,6 because you never see lun 6.  See http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-4-esxi-installable-vcenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.config_fc.doc_41/esx_san_config/managing_san_systems/t_change_the_number_of_luns_scanned_using_disk.maxlun.html

  • Compare the performance of virtual machine using RDM for physical Machine with HBA

With the help of some great users, I recently converted a node of a cluster, MSCS running Server 2003 and SQL 2000 to a virtual machine for the cluster resulting has a physical node and a virtual node using RDM drives. See http://communities.vmware.com/thread/187822 If you're interested.

Now my question revolves around performance. Colleagues who manage programs running on that cluster related that a backup every night a database on the thesystem take 10 minutes on a physical hardware and takes 30 minutes. A restoration took 45 minutes and now takes a little less than three hours. Is this kind of drop in performance to be expected? Is there some specific changes that I can look to improve performance.

The virtual machine works like a single virtual machine on a machine of update3 ESX3.5. ESX server has two processors Quad-cores and 32 GB of ram, 30 GB assigned to the virtual machine.

Any help or pointers to more information would be greatly appreciated.

Check your card vSCSI.  If you P2V'ed, you're likely to have a Buslogic adapter.  The Buslogic adapter will limit the length of the queue 1 and limit the I/O.  Replace with the free and see if that helps you.

  • P2V with SAN = > VM + VMDK

    I have a question:

I want to P2V a physical server with data on SAN for stand-alone with VMDK on ESXi virtual machine.

    How can I do this?

    I think, I can:

    1. a hot P2V physical server with SAN = > copy entire disc VMware P2V tool
    2. Start a virtual machine with VMDK

You will be able to use VMware Standalone Converter - it read the SAN as a classic drive and create a corresponding VMDK.

  • Convert True64 Unix physical machine into a Virtual Machine

    Hi all

I wonder if I can convert the physical machine with True64 Unix virtual machine or not.

    Server version: AlphaServer 4000/5/300 - Tru64 Unix 4.0 D / TruCluster Ver 5.1

    Can anyone suggest me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.

Don't you can't virtualize the machine to the VMware platform.

The reason is that the server uses the alpha microprocessor and not a standard intel x 86/intel x 64 compatible.

You will need to migrate to new hardware or reinstall the server from scratch on a different linux/unix as a platform.

You may be able to migrate the data. It's usually pretty easy on unix-like platforms, but you'd have to testrun this part of course.

    Hope this helps,

  • URGENT! Two physical network with two subnets completely - no bridges - interface cannot connect both

    This is my urgent problem:

I have a physical machine with two physical network interfaces. I have a VMWARE player and a virtual machine that must use cards on two different subnets, a public directly to the router and an intranet within the company.

How can I just say a net card to go on this submarine and the other on the public void?  Go crazy. Help, please.

    Thank you

    P.

Use the virtual network editor VMware Player, create an additional bridged VMnet and bind each bridged to a different physical network... card VMnet on a virtual machine, create a virtual network adapter on each subnet and bind each virtual network adapter to an another VMnet jumpered.

For additional help with virtual network Editor, check this KB: VMware KB: using the VMware Workstation virtual network editor

  • Cannot start the physical machine converted to a virtual machine under ESXi 4.0

    Hi all

I have 2 has with the material below

Dell optiplex 755 2.4 Qcore 4 GB of RAM and 160 GB of HARD drive

A performer with ESXi 4.0 other runs with Windows 2003.

I tried to convert physical machine with "Vmware Vcenter converter Stand alone" 4.0.1 build 161434

I used the tool on the source machine and by another machine on the network.

The two process converts the physical machine to a virtual machine successfully without any errors.

After conversion, the virtual machine cannot start, and shows only a small slider that is not flashing too.

The physical machine have a single partition of 160 GB

The space currently used on the physical machine is 26 GB.

I reduced the size of the HARD drive to virtual computer with fix / light available in 40 GB.

point to make here is that the ESX have only 160 GB HDD, so he will not be able to copy all 160 GB because of which I am reducing the 40 GB HARD drive

I converted a few other physical machines with 40 GB HARD drive and they work well after the conversion.

Any sugessions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sunil,

  • HP EVA SRA: On the machine virtual or physical machine?

    Hello

I need an answer correct, accurate and 100%: the HP EVA SRA must run on a physical machine with fiber HBA?

    or

It's "all software" talk of TCP/IP to the Command View EVA box so the SRM + SRA box can be a virtual machine?

I can't get a clear answer on the guides. Whoever it is I always ask say "hmm I think that" and I can't afford it. I need a hard 'I know' instead.

all communications between the HP EVA SRA is made via command view eva via TCP/IP. the SRA can be installed with the SRM server software in a virtual machine, there is NO requirement so that it can be installed on a physical server with HBA.

  • Change the host for a virtual machine on a cluster and the host is not in accordance with the attached profile

    Hi all

    I have 02 questions.

    1. we have a cluster which has 02 physical hosts (Host1 and Host2). We have 02 virtual machines on the Cluster. Active DRS on the cluster.

But the problem is that my 02 VMS are always stays on a Host2. A few weeks ago, each virtual machine carried out on each host. How can I place each virtual machine on each host to perform better.

    How to do this?

    2. I connect to the cluster using vSphere client 5.1, under summer host, I get the following message

"Configuration problems: host is not in accordance with the attached profile.

I suspect that this is the case for my question 1?

    Thank you very much

    Hello

I think I found the answer for the problem of home profile. I changed the following values to 1 for each host to > settings > under software > advanced settings >

    Under Data Mover

    HardwareAcceleratedInit

    HardwareAcceleratedMove

    Under VMFS3

    HardwareAcceleratedLocking

Compliance status is returned to the green.

    Thanks for the advice guys!
