Backup to an external drive

I use XP and backup to store my entire system to an external drive (WD Passport Essential). Three hours of this last, everything seems to have properly stored on the external hard drive. Then, I got a message "no available recovery ASR diskette floppy drive cannot be created. I have a valid backup on my HDD external that I could use in case I need to do a recovery? My advice to you is to renounce the backup utility built-in to Windows XP (NTBackup.exe) and you get a disk imaging or disk cloning application.

If you have a Western Digital hard drive, you can get it from WD (http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119) or you can get it separately (this is not an exhaustive list and is in no particular order):

Acronis True Image Home 11
EASEUS ToDo Backup
Paragon Drive Copy or Partition Manager Personal
Casper
Norton Ghost

  • Time machine backup on my external drive...

    Hello

I am doing this for the first time so I need some help here please.

I have a 5 years, 250 GB Mac Book Pro running on Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I have NEVER done a Time Machine backup first.

I have an external hard drive 1 TB, which has about 200 GB of data backed up from my Mac Book pro and other files.

I want to upgrade to El Capitan and want to back up my book ALL of the mac pro.

My question is, is the external drive with about 750 GB of sufficiently available to back up my entire Mac Book pro...?  Looks like it should be. The IMPORTANT question is, somehow will it delete my existing files in my external drive...? How can I make sure that this does not happen...?

Separately, I have 2 accounts on my Mac Book Pro, when I back up my laptop using Time Machine, goes up two accounts...? ... Should I be logged into my main account so it backs up two accounts...? How that will work in a restaurant...?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Your best bet would be to clone your entire drive to another Partition on the hard drive, external, but repartitioning is not without risk.

TM should work but is not ideal. TM backs up only the account your as I recall.

Everything that you be sure to secure boot, now hold SHIFT key on startup to repair the startup disk, and then use Utilityto repair disk external hard disk.

  • Windows Vista backup on the external drive stopped working

I have a LaCie 750 GB hard drive external (total size 698 GB) who I've been saving my drive C and D to a Dell XPS 410 using Vista Home Premium software.  He contended until the end with a backup automated on-demand for once a week.  He performed the backup 30 times since 11/09/09, but sometimes did so sometimes (shorter range) other than the weekly on-demand.  When I compare the total size with the free space on the external drive and my drives C and D, the amount of used space is respectively 131 GB, 5,11 GB and GB 665,5.  I am not very computer savvy, but if the backup program backs up only what of new each time, why used on my external drive space is so superior to what is still on my C and D drive?  I assumed that the backup software would just copy the previous backup, each time that a new backup or write on the oldest backup, but apparently is not.  So now all I get are messages saying that the backup was not successful because a file was in use or something to that effect.  I'm doing something wrong or do I have to reformat the hard drive external when it is "full" to start the backup of my computer again?

    Hello

Your assumption is correct. Cross check if a new backup is created and saved in the external hard drive. If a new backup is not too write the old backup, the use of the space will be very high.

Two particularly useful automatic backup features are the ability to do a scheduled backup and the ability to save your files.
We recommend that you cross check if backup settings are intact. To do this, try the following steps.
    1. open backup and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then clicking the backup and restore.
    2. click on change settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

You get the error message, unplug the external drive and restart the computer. Connect the hard drive and check if you get the error message.

    I hope this helps.

  • How can I make Time Machine backup to an external drive?

I have an external drive that I stay logged in all the time, and I want that she is saved with my hour of hard drive internal Machine. I found the setting "IncludedVolumeUUIDs" in Library/Preferences/com.appleTimeMachine.plist, but I can't change the permissions to modify.

Open the Time Machine system preferences pane, click Options, and remove it from the list if possible. Time Machine can't back up NTFS, FAT32 volumes and exFAT.

  • Backup more Seagate external drive "unsupported"?

I want to use my Seagate Backup Plus 5 to, a network connected to the USB 3.0 port on my Linksys WRT1900AC wireless router. When the connection is established, the router recognizes the backup more, however it is not mapped it as an available network drive because she sees the drive as "not supported" - see attached screenshot.

If I connect the backup more USB (2.0) port on my desktop, saving more is recognized and mapped accordingly. However, I want to use it as a network connected to the router network drive.

Why backup so not "benefit" as a network drive when it is connected to the USB port on the router?

Is there a "fix" for him to be recognized and used as a network through the router?

Thank you, Jonah.  I'll back my backup Plus 5 to one of the listed players.  Perhaps the link you gave me may be included in the documentation for the router Linksys for future customers reference so that they can avoid my situation of buying a non compatible disc.

PS: It is interesting to note that the Seagate Backup more 4 TB USB 3.0 Desktop external hard drive STDT4000100 model is listed in the table.  Yet, the model Seagate Backup over 5 TB USB 3.0 Desktop external hard drive STDT5000100 (the model I bought) is not listed.  Other additional 1 TB of storage, you would think they would be both compatible with the Linksys WRT1900AC.  Apparently not - I'll stick to displayed records.  Thanks again.

  • Problem with the PC Backup on the external DRIVE on the network drive home.

I made backups of my laptop wirelessly through my router to my connecting external hard drive attached to my desktop, when I used Microsoft OneCare. Since then, OneCare is being abandoned, I decided to go to the basics of Microsoft (MS). Unfortunately, Ms Essentials doesn't have the features of OneCare. I try to perform a backup using the backup and Restore Center, however, I get an error message when I put backup settings to location network - error code: 0 x 80070534, no mapping between account names and security IDS was done... the results. Is there a KB or a fix for this problem? I've looked everywhere for answers and keep looking, however, I have found no solid solution (especially scams, i.e. pc scanners and fixers of registry error). How is it that I could make a backup without problem with OneCare (that I have no more:{{class=fontblue}} {.}) Now I try to do through the Center backup and restore, the backup does not work! It makes no sense at all!  I have Windows OS: Vista Home Premium 32-bit 2 Gb RAM SP2; HARD drive external: Maxtor 3200 (320Gb) hdd personal

Thanks, I found the problem. I had to uncheck the ReadOnly property on the folder that I traced to use for my backup location on my HARD drive. In truth, the property read-only (checkbox) is not checked, it is filled (designates the system setting) with a green square in the box (on my Windows XP desktop). I'm sure that others have missed this little nuisance. It's cheating. I don't know how many times I looked at the folder that I use for my backups, forget to realize that the ReadOnly is the default setting for the file. I no longer get the error message: 0 x 80070534, no mapping between account names and security IDS was done. I can't believe it's just as simple as that! My backups work fine.

Karena, R, thank you for your time and help in any way.

  • Time Machine backup to external drive connected to the TimeCapsule

I have a 3 TB TimeCapsule, that contains the my iMac TimeMachine backup. So far so good.

Now, I would like to connect an external drive to the TimeCapsule via the USB port to allow access to this drive of my iMac as well as other computers on my network. I would like to than the external to include in my Time Machine backup drive. Is it possible - by accepting that the backup of obviously only runs when the Mac is on? If this isn't the case, other methods of backup to an external drive, connected to the TimeCapsule, may be recommended?

You can do it. Time Machine it will support up to a separate folder on your backup disk. Don't forget to remove it from the exclusions list in Time Machine preferences. I don't know if others cannot see the drive connected to your computer is turned off. They may be able to mount the drive on their computer as you do on yours. Try it because I could be wrong on this matter.

  • Backup Time Machine greyed out, even if the external drive is attached and backup is present

Try to restore an old iTunes library and all my music for complex reasons (two on a Macbook Pro hard drive failure, not enough space for iTunes on the SSD space have now). I have a Time Machine backup to an external drive that is plugged, and the backup I need is clearly visible in the Finder. But in Time Machine, it is grayed out and inaccessible. If I try to just copy the iTunes folder, overall I get an error "not enough free space" even if there is lots of space available (119 GB iTunes folder, 165Gb disk space). Any ideas gratefully received.

    System information:

Proof that I'm not a fool:

Time Machine, please press the shift-command-C key combination. The windshield will show the mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and search for files to restore.

  • Not able to take backup on external drive.

    Original title: backup and backup Open files;

I have just startde to use Office 2007 with Windows XP Pro. I'm doing a backup on my external drive "F". When I try to open the file or folder of this drive in R / clicking > open, it brings back me to the wizard to backup & restore instead. The window that opens when I R / click on the file/folder on drive F is so different; It shows a selection "Edit" at the top, followed by "Open", followed by "7-Zip", 'open with' ' Scan with "," send to "etc. No "Explore". I was unable to open the folder or file in any given method. Make the backup I use the Backup Wizard and have used the advanced, and normal method. On the F drive backup icon appears, but it seems to be empty or such. What I do wqrong? I need your HELP, please and thank you: HDScala

    Hi JoelJ1964,

Thank you very much for your help. Before using this laptop, I used my old computer with WIN XP Pro and Office 2003. I was able to back up to the external hard drive F and then open and work with files or files, as in copy and paste to the C drive everything I need. Office 2007 does not work the same? I use Windows XP pro here as well. In addition, I seem to have several folders "My Documents" on "My Computer" tree. A top under the desk, then 'User' in Documents and Settings, I 'My Documents' and 'recent Documents '. In the latter folder, I found all the backups, many icons, real backup folder containing only 1 KB, and most appear to be shortcuts. I simply do not know what is happening here, although some files or folders are containing the info that I have previously saved in My Documents.

How can I know what a folder, when I returned to the Backup Wizard, follow the instructions in the wizard and the file or restore the right folder? I'll be able to see this only restored?

    Any suggestions or help or advise would be appreciated. Best regards, HDScala;

    Hi HDScala;

With all due respect, you're wrong to be able to open and edit files after using backup windows on your other computer. Using the backup utility is not the same as copy and paste. When you use backup image is created similar to the image below. When you use copy / paste, you are able to access immediately, open and edit the file. Backup doesn't work the same way. It compresses the files you selected to save then creates an image of the same thing. There is no option to change the format that uses the backup utility files.

The link below is a tutorial on windos xp backup utility.

As for the several folders "My documents" you see, there's such a folder for each user account on the computer, including the default Administrator account. These records are quite normal.

The only strange thing, that you have pointed out the fact that you see the individual files in recent Documents. You should see the image created by the backup utility along with the documents you accessed physically.

  • Time Machine deleted messages on an external drive to the trash can on iMac are taking place on the hard drive?

I am struggling with a computer, try to empty the trash with 1million 300,000 Time machine backup files. It runs for two days now and won't install. At this rate, I'll need a week before my computer becomes viable. I don't feel able to go to the Terminal to do the trick. Also at this point, I'm afraid to stop the process again... Backups on an external drive of pigs 400 GB on my drive hard imac... I have so little room to work right now. I deleted some 200,000 files already yet the storage on my imac HD has not moved. The files in the Recycle Bin of the external drive really live on my hd now until they will be deleted if all goes well before Christmas?

I have a new computer to come next week so I'm wondering if I'll just reformat my entire hd in my imac to solve this problem... Any ideas?

You do all this in the Finder?

Time Machine has to delete the files from the user interface, normally "browsing Time Machine backup", navigate to the desired folder, and select the option "delete all backups of...» ». This is the approved way that should work.

If you are manually dragging the items in the trash of in a Time Machine backup, it can choke. Time Machine stores data with many levels of access control permissions & Finder seems to have difficulties to remove to empty the trash. In fact, I think that the TM drive has limits to prevent normal users to change data on this disk.

Personally, I think your safest option is to abandon the process, restart, erase and reformat the Time Machine drive. Who will lose all history backups but again in a clean condition seems to be better than trying to manually prune the Time Machine data. Time Machine removes old backups when it is full - so you shouldn't really need to intervene like this anyway.

Wait and see if anyone has a better idea.

P.S., each disk has its own "basket", so doing drag items should not fill your Mac startup disk. Maybe the operating system is out of memory, try to process all the files, exit other applications & see if that changes anything, you may have to wait just if you want to avoid to abandon the process.

  • The disk check does not not on the external drive

I am restoring a backup to an external drive, the drive seems to work very well.  However, the backup stops showing communication errors.  The software company was told to run the check disk on the external hard drive.  I click Start and nothing happens.  Device Manager indicates that the drive works properly.  It's just Check Disk does nothing.

How do check drive working correctly?

These are the drives on which you were trying to run chkdsk?  If so, the problem may be with the electronics in the case rather than the drive itself.  See, for example, http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1979433/open-lacie-porsche-design-9230-case.html

So really, they both failed completely at the same time, it's unfortunate and unusual (unless there was some common external factor).

Although hdtune is a good utility, it might still be useful to check with Seatools (LaCie was bought by Seagate several years ago) - unless the drive makes strange noises when it is turned on. in this case, more you do, the data you will lose.

Depending on the amount of data is worth to you, it has undertaken is specialized in recovering data on damaged disks.  This service is not cheap.  DriveSaversis probably the most well-known, but there are many others, including one that says it specializes in hard drives LaCie.  Many will give you a free estimate of the costs to retrieve data.  I have no personal experience with any of these companies and none of them can recommend at the expense of others.

  • How can I increase the size of my backup of windows D drive?

I get the message that I don't have enough space to perform another backup.

You save on an internal hard drive rather than externally?

Backups on drives to the bosom of the PC are more useful than the chocolate teapots but narrowly - if your PC does not go, only then he can take his readers with her.  If you choose to backup to an external drive as an external hard drive connected by USB, then you are much safer.  While I use a third-party backup utility, I understand that Windows backup [as its default setting] the backup disk D:\ destination and that is what led you in your current situation.

To avoid this external drive to fill too quickly, you must manually manage.  In General, what fills the reader is the series of system images that can be included in backups.  They are very useful, but are almost as big as the space used on the original disc.  You can manually delete older images to free up space on the disk for the next.  In fact, I keep two recent images but delete the older in turn.  If you are interested to do this, then I can give you the details of how do.

The fact that you say that you back up the disk D:\ also makes me think that you have the OS & its applications on the C:\ drive and you have all your own files on the C:\ drive.  If that is correct you can get also huge improvements [once you set backups up to use an external hard drive] by moving your data files on to D:\.  Other than the time needed to move your files, setting up that accompanies this change takes less than two minutes.  The additional benefits of the present are considerable.  You can continue to make backups of your own files normal files and that you carry on making images of system.  But these system images are going to be up to about 35 GB and only take 20 minutes to do.  Similarly, recovering from serious problems of the system by restoring these images only takes 20 minutes to do.  Because I have my PC set up this way, I can get out of the serious problems of the system with ease.  If you are interested to do this then I can give you the details of how do.  Someone else asked about just last week, so I know I can find the procedure.
