backups system state backups vs vm

Hello

There are a lot of practical documentation on system state backups, but what's the point of system state backups, if you are running backups of virtual machine using the vstorage api.  I know that for the AD, a backup of the system state is better that one vm, backup, but other than that, has no useless system state backup is a backup of virtual machine (I was going to say redundant).

I am trying to develop a strategy for which use.  My preference is to make backups of VMS (no file level) and use sparingly system state backups.  Do both adds to planning of backup with more, that there is less tolerance for a backup window and more an expectation of off-host backups.

For a domain controller you need to make backups of system state. Without them, you may lose AD. According to the recommendations of Microsoft at least twice a day.

This isn't a very good statement. As always, 'it depends' - depends on your image-level backup solution. With Veeam, you have not had do this - unless you want to have redundancy on the backup of the same data twice.

However, with the image at the level of backup solutions which are not multi-application and do not treat virtual computers running some applications in a special way on the backup and restore, you certainly to do that. Otherwise, in case of DC for example, you will end up with a USN restoration on the restoration, and it will screw up your ad.

In addition, just to cover some other points above:

If you try to restore a DC from backup of image based (i.e. a backup to the current no AD) in a multi domain controller environment, you will almost certainly encounter problems of replication synchronization after restoring as the AD database was restored in a way not supported.

That's right, unless you use the image-level such as Veeam backup solution, which performs backups multi-application and – most importantly – multi-application restorations.

Also, image based backups not serve to an Exchange Server transaction logs, so it will continue to grow until a backup of the information store.

It is also an accurate statement of many image-level backup solutions. Most of them do not at all cut the Exchange transaction logs. Some will be plum them immediately to the creation of the snapshot (before the backup is completed successfully) - which is actually worse than not not their pruning at all - because you find yourself without reliable backup and logs are gone too. And only a few image-level backup solutions (for example, Veeam) will do it properly, pruning Exchange connects after successful only backup.

I would definitely test any solution backup abundantly in the test environment with applications, before making decisions on the backup strategy. There are too many marketing of nowadays. Many image-level backup providers tend to make a big deal of features without importance and features of the product, while being silent to not have more basic, core features that are expected of any backup solution - as above - correctly handles backup and restore applications.

I hope this helps. Warning, I work for Veeam.

I don't think I needed the backup program that I have another backup program, but I was wrong. To back up the system state data, my backup program requires that I have copy their help:

To back up the locking system files under Windows NT4, 2000 and XP systems dfg backup XP uses components of NT backup, which is part of the operating system. In Windows XP Home Edition that the NT backup is not installed by default, so you must install it manually. The NT backup is located on the Windows XP CD in the \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP directory. If you need to restore files in the System State, you will need to use the NT backup after you have it extracted from Zip archive.

    Hi TW,.

Check if you have a "VALUEADD" folder installed on your HARD drive. Some OEM installations actually install to the hard drive. You should find the Microsoft Backup utility in there.

  • Server 2003 System State backup

How to make a backup of my Windows Server 2003 System State? I am a beginner again and need a little demanding solution. Thanks in advance.

Maybe you could try a professional software to reach your goal. There are two of the most outstanding: www.todo-backup.com/.../backup-system-state.htm, www.backup-utility.com/.../backup-server-2003-system-state.html. so easy to use.

  • the system state data can be contained in 2 different folders, e.g. Windows or host1

    Hello

Recently, my computer was able to start and I had neglected to backup my data. While dealing with the Windows Recovery Console, I inadvertently added a folder called host1 to the system. I tried to replace and remove this folder, but could not. Currently, I'm trying to back up my data to the system state by using the Windows backup utility. What's weird, is that in the log file, "Host1" is listed under the file saved to the system state data. Previously, these data were in the "Windows" folder The content of two files seems to be identical. I need to get rid of unnecessary duplication in my system. The backup file size was more than 200 gb. Phew!

    Thank you

Before deleting copy just the system folder windows.old + System32 files (these files contain most of the settings and drivers. (In the case where in the future you need a driver for a printer you have you can always point windows to find in these files) in a new folder on the C drive and delete the rest in the windows.old and the folder windows.old himself. You could rename the Windows folder and not the host1 because XP uses host1 as its new folder. This is where the operating system boots from. The old windows folder contains more data due to past use and all programs that you have installed since you had the PC.

  • On the Test computer system state restore

    Hello

We have windows server 8R2 (hostname APWINDOWS8R2519). The server has many applications (Ms office, MCAFEE, Ms Sql Server, Oracle etc.) that are installed in the drive D, drive E and F by car.

We intend to make the recovery test for this server on the TEST computer.

We have a same Measurements (including ip address, host name, memory) as production of the machine machine.

My question is when to apply the System State? If we must first restore all applications of the D, E and F drive on the machine then start applying the system on the machine state

    or

First apply the System State, and then restore all application folders in the drive D, E and F.

    Which is the correct method.

    Thank you.

    Hello

First of all, welcome to the Forum OR!

You can find a detailed guide of your PXI system with your real-time system configuration here:

Initial setup of the PXI real-time and install the http://www.ni.com/white-paper/12871/en/ software system

This screen your see is just a console that returns events on the pxi system. In your case, it indicates your pxi is not configured.

You cannot create events of keyboard and mouse on a system in real-time because it would mean that your system is not more deterministic.

For this purpose all the configuration and programming is done on a host pc, which connects to the pxi and deploys your programming.

  • X100e backup/restore

Hi, I just bought a x100e with preinstalled Windows 7 and wonder how to make a system backup/restore correctly. I need to install Ubuntu in a few days and create/edit a few partitions that exist (I guess that this will replace mbr) and I want to be able to restore the initial state of the system. So, what's the best "workflow" to save/restore, System State or reset to factory settings x100e (witch is probably most interesting for me) in my dulling?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You can create discs of recovery on a USB drive or burn it to DVD by attaching an external optical drive, old method to see this:- http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Creating-x100e-recovery-media-on-USB-stick/ta-...

With recovery discs, you can restore your system to factory settings any time you want.

This before installing Linux, otherwise you will not be able to once you have installed Ubuntu.

    I hope this helps.

  • Backup VDR of Active Directory virtual computers

I was wondering if many use VDR to save their VMs AD?  I would it would make the recovery of VM all obviously faster.  I always make backups of the System State and such, but I was wondering if anyone has tested an AD VM host backup and restore with VDR?  Any thoughts/concerns/problems with this?

    Hello.

Personally, I prefer simply to take system state backups and not more. If I need to do a restore, I just deploy a new virtual machine from the model and then use the system to restore State.

It might be interesting to read Microsoft "[backup and restore considerations for virtualized domain controllers | ]. "[http://technet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd363545%28WS.10%29.aspx]" document TechNet for Windows 2008.  It seems to apply only to Windows Virtualization.  For Windows 2003, see kb 875495.  The thing to keep in mind is supported from Microsoft.  You do not want to perform a restore DC not supported and then know you will not be supported by Microsoft with it.

    Good luck!

  • ESX 3.5 backup Suggestions / Help

Hi all!  It's been a while since I've visited these forums but recently I tried to get a plan to back up our virtual environment.  First, here's a quick description of our virtual environment:

3 Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 32 GB of RAM each, NIC 6 (2 on board, 2 dual port cards), each two-processor Xeon 5345

    1 Dell / Equallogic PS400E SAN

    ESX 3.5 UPD 1 Standard x 3, VC 2.5 Foundation (non-virtual)

Here are our current backup environment / method:

CA Arcserv 12 backup each VM (local disk + the system state) as a backup of 'level of files', something in the neighborhood of 2 TB - not a backup complete VM

I've suggested that we do was buy VMware Agent for Arcserv of CA software and a basic backup unit (unit 3 TB ExaGrid) disk which should be installed and configured by our SAN provider.  The idea was to start to full backup of virtual machine alongside our backup process normal precautionary measure for the updates of the firmware of the SAN, semi DR, software ESX upgrades / updates, etc.  Essentially to give me peace of mind and a way out of what I consider to be a 'disaster' that is losing the San or a firmware update gone bad.  Due to the cost of the solution, the idea was struck down.  Now, I'm first trying to find an "cheaper" alternative for giving me some peace of mind.

Some of the ideas I had would be to buy a NAS cheap with sufficient capacity to allow me to get a complete virtual machine backup before making any changes I need to do but I'm not sure what all I would need to be able to do something like that.  Would I need to the Arcserv for VMware agent or something like that (maybe EsXpress or vRanger Pro etc connection) or I could shoot with just VCB?  Would it be possible to not even use VCB and up volume on the SAN, and copy the files or do I need something like VCB to put the files in the correct state?  Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

When VCB puts these offline files is the virtual machine offline, the duration of the backup?

N ° snapshot functionality has been designed so that you don't have to take the virtual machine offline.

With Arcserv (or VCB) to put the files somewhere I think it would be unwise to put them back on the SAN then maybe local storage (DAS) or storage (NAS) networking maybe?

Thaat's what we do as well.  We are valuable SAN performance real estate for the archives, which would be a waste, so we use the SATA storage premises.

Or are you saying that acrserv should be able to recover the files from the SAN to bring broadband (or other)?

Probably better to stage, the first save, perhaps of local disk, a NAS or Windows file store.  Use your backup software to process these files as you would for a physical server, and then move those band.  You can probably go live on tape, but if the backup fails, you are wasting time / Ribbon, featuring it it will be easier to manage also.
