• InDesign: a bad choice for a dictionary?

  InDesign gets more people to create interactive PDF files, Flash buttons, eBooks, and even complete with sites. My standard advice to these people comes down to this: InDesign is primarily a tool for the design of books with. Printed material. Everything else is a bonus, and you should not expect the performance outstanding, output optimized or additional functions for one of these 'by-products '. It is a good choice to make pages, nothing else.

  So I used InDesign CS4 to do the layout for a large dictionary; > 650 pages, two columns, small fonts, about 6600 characters per page. Three paragraph styles 'main', indicating the main entrance, entry, additional information. About 15 additional character styles: Word main entry, usual bold and italic for emphasis, but also a custom arrow, a small space custom, backgrounds for indications of subentry and custom exhibitors - more GREP a few styles to avoid bad between a few combinations of marker frequently intervened. Every single paragraph of 2 to 8 lines contains at least 10 characters styles.

  I was wise enough to not put everything in a single large document; It's 20 separate files, one for each letter. Range of sizes of about 3 MB of files up to 10MB - and all this is all text, no graphics.

  So text corrections arrived, I have my doubts. Was the appropriate choice for it in InDesign? Here's the problem:

  Each click of the mouse, turn page, scroll, or deletion or insertion of a single character costs at least 10 minutes and sometimes as much as 20 seconds.

  I created books in bulk before with this same version, same treatment up to 500 pages of text (before you divide them upward in files section, just for convenience); but I've never seen this kind of maddening / teeth gnashing/extremely frustrating behavior before. Of course, I'm a reasonable guy and he should expect that the ID gets slower with more and more complex page layouts and formatting of the text. But really: a click in a Word, wait 10 seconds, press DELETE, wait 10 seconds?

  Moreover, I am always to CS4 instead of upgrading to a more recent versions is because those still even more run slow (it is really funny: I found that ID CS5.5 feels already sluggish when there is nothing on your screen but a blank document - har, har, har...). I can't imagine "redevelopment" would all of a sudden these whiz files on my screen.

  Maybe I should downgrade the docs for CS3, do my corrections with that, then re-load in CS4?

  How much RAM you have on your system? (Right click on "My Computer"-> properties)

  As a general rule, Windows XP does not work well if you have less than 1 GB or more of RAM.  What usually happens is that your RAM capacity is exceeded leading to overflow on virtual memory (the drive) to compensate for the need of RAM in the computer.  This causes your system to beat on your hard drive and slow down your system.

  If this is your problem, the options are to increase the RAM on your system or decrease the non-essential programs that launch at startup on your computer using a tool like Autoruns.

  Now try control-alt-shift key (Ctrl-alt-shift on Windows) and start Photoshop. An option button will open and opt for delete the settings file - see if that helps any.
