Bandwidth using Vmotion

We add another server from VSphere 4 in a different building on our campus.  What are the requirements for minimum bandwidth between two VSphere servers to use VMotion between them?  Is a dedicated link 1Gig between them to transfer virtual methods on in a reasonable amount of time?  Would be 100 Meg transfer works for this?  Or if they are nearby with direct connections between them?

Scenario would be to have a few methods virtual redundancy or transfer over to interview one of the boxes of VSphere.  We would prefer to have housed in different places for different reasons, power outages, etc...

Thanks in advance.

Hello.

Discover the features listed in the http://pubs.vmware.com/vsp40/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=admin/c_vmotion_networking_requirements.html - network here it states that Gb is necessary.  This does not mean that it might not work, but you will be setting yourself for maintenance problems.

Good luck!

I need manage the bandwidth used, PowerConnect 6224 traffic collision and packet traffic. I downloaded the MIB from the Dell support site and I saw thar there are about 105 MIB in the downloaded file. My question is: in what Mib, I can find the OID which allow me to monitor the above?

    Thanks in advance

    Rogerio

Unfortunately, there is not a complete list of the different OID in different MIB. In order to find this info to simply browse through the different MIB seeking the OID, you need. We did some looking through the MIB and found these OIDs that can help you. Another thing to keep in mind is that the MIB downloaded are in general of a group of switches. So there are situations where a /OID MIB listed will work for a certain model of switch with certain level of firmware.

Another method, some people have had success, done using a SNMP walk.

  • maximum bandwidth of vmotion

What is the bandwidth maximum vmotion to move virtual machines?

    Hey Nick,

With ESXi 5, you can go up to 10 GB per interface.

  • "Cold migration" use vMotion enabled network?

I have three installed ESXi hosts and they are networked with 2 different networks. One is the regular 100mbps network which I use as management network, which is also used to connect my client to connect to guests individually vsphere or vCenter Server (running under VM on one of the hosts).

My other is network of 1 Gbit/s which I am trying to qualify vMotion only for traffic. I activated vMotion (pronounced check) on the vmKernel port which is connected to the gigabit speed network while I disabled the vMotion on the slower network.

Yet, to my surprise, when I do 'MIGRATION' COLD (focus is on migration to cold, not hot vMotion), he always uses the slower network while the faster network remains inactive.

This seems to show that the path taken by Migration cold network is unrelated to the one taken by active vMotion vmKernel port. How can I make sure that cold migration and other activities 'Lourdes' happens ONLY through the network more fast.

I want to only use the slower network which is on my LAN to connect (on my laptop) Client vsphere vCenter Server or host directly if necessary. Can someone please? I like you a lot because I'm stuck now. Thank you.

Migration cold work through Console of Service / Management VMkernel and don't use VMotion VMkernel.

  • Using VMotion with 2 ESX and VCenter

    Hi all

I just installed with ESX 2 VSphere and & VCenter. I can't use VMotion to migrate a virtual machine running one ESX towards each other.

    My setup is as follows:

    the iSCSI Software initiator.

data store even shared by 2 facilitators.

same conf network on the 2 hosts, none vlan used (set to 0):

    • vSwitch0 for the Service console, connected to the network of the company (vmnik0)

    • vSwitch1 for virtual machine network (connected to the company network vmnic1) and VMkernel (for vmotion, connected to the production network: san, vmnic2).

Error displayed (at 10%): a general error occurred: the VMotion failed because the ESX host failed to connect to the VMotion network, please check your physical network configuration and settings network VMotion.

vmnic2 on ESX1 is configured with 255.255.0.0 192.168.130.X mask and connected to eth0 on iSCSI SAN

vmnic2 on ESX2 is configured with 255.255.0.0 192.168.131.X mask and connected to eth1 on iSCSI SAN

    Thanks for help

Two VLAN different connection to the iSCSI SAN. You should have the same subnet, but a different IP addresses (if any) connecting to the San from each host (depends on the SAN)... For example 192.168.130.25 for ESX1 and 192.168.130.30 for ESX2. Unless your SAN network covers actually two subnets on your local network, you create a question where you don't need to. I would also use separate NETWORK card for vMotion traffic and another for iSCSI. Separate them VM traffic too (makes everything cleaner and less chance of collisions and too load performance causing one issues for each other. This is why it is a good idea to have at least four, if not six, physical NIC (or ports) within an ESX/ESXi server.

  • ESXI 4 - can I limit the bandwidth used by each guset?

    Hi all

I was wondering if I can limit the amount of bandwidth used by each of them to the virtual machine?

I have two VM (in the future there will be more) with server 2003 installed on them.

Map of network Wan ESXI has 40 MB of connection, and I want a virtual machine to have a limit of 15 MB and the other VM to have a 25 MB limit.

    Can it be done?

    With our thanks,

    Itamar

No, you cannot limit the bandwidth with this granularity, bun, you can set the average bandwidth for all virtual machines connected to the network of the virtual machine port group.

In the case of 2 virtual machines, I guess you can simply create 2 groups of network ports VM differet with average 15 to 25 Mbit bandwidth, but it would ' be really easy to maintain if number of VM will grow.

  • ESX host will not use VMotion

    Hi all

I have a question maybe someone can help.

I installed two new ESX hosts in their own cluster, managed by a single data center environment.

After the installation and updates, adding them to the Cluster environment and adding new licenses to the license server VC.

I have one of the two ESX host who won't use VMotion. Everything is allowed as should be. But in the section of the Add On to the Configuration of the license, I see the following:

VMware DRS Licensed for 2 cpu

VirtualCenter for ESX Server Licensed agent for 2 cpu

    VMotion will not used

VMware Consolidated Backup for 2 cpu license

VMware HA under license for 2 cpu

    Additional details:

Both servers in the cluster are identical hardware profiles: Intel 3.2Gig Xeon, 2 cavities 4 hearts, no HT.

    32Gig of RAM, (Proliant DL380 G5)

The two servers connected to the SAN via Fibre Chanel Switch, redundant.

Concert NIC ((VMNic 0 (Console 1), VMNic 1 (Standby adapter), VMNic 2 (Console 2) (the Virtual Machine Network), (VMkernel), (ports of vSwitch 56 none VLAN not defined) VMNic 3 (Standby adapter)).)

No errors in the Logs of license, the Console message, etc. Everything seems in good health with no update needed.

Both servers see the unique data store, created on the same SAN which it connects through the switch channel.

VMFS 3.31.  Unique data store with several extensions (8 in total, the creation of a size of 15 to storage).

    Any ideas?

All my other hosts using VMotion, but it does not work and there is no difference in configuration, I know.

    Thank you

I read about this since 2014! How Skype does not solve this problem yet? Amazing!
I am transferring files between 2 PCs on Win7 64 bit and latest Skype (update), full bandwidth of 1.5 Mbps downloading (and I am sure is that Skype to use 100%!) and one day calculated for the transfer of 250 MB! It goes like a turtle! What the hell Skype is the download otherwise files?

No, there is no adjustment for the bandwidth that uses the device.

  • How can I check who is using VMotion NIC?

I have 2 installation hosts with 4 NICs (local storage) and I configured for VMKernel (VMotion) one switch with separate maps. These two are connected with a crossover cable and are configured with manual IP addresses. Migration of virtual machines stop works, but how can I be sure that the traffic is really from my separate vSwitch1/vmnic2 and does not block vSwitch0/vmnic0 + vmnic1 with all the virtual machines in the annex?

I checked the network traffic on the host in vCenter, but during VMotion I saw massive traffic on vmnic1, but none on vmnic2, so I'm not sure if my configration is correct.

Can someone help / advice? Thank you.

    docvirtual wrote:

I know that I have not met ALL the requirements for VMotion, but that should not affect where the traffic is done by. And even cold migration should go through network cards configured.

And that's where you're wrong. Migration cold uses your network management vmk0, which will use vmnic0 or vmnic1 and not the vMotion VMkernel.

I just tested a migration cold between two servers. VMotion NIC was slowed while the NETWORK card for the management network yielded several MB/s in the migration process cold.

    Concerning

  • using vmotion

    Hello

I'm a bit confused on vmotion (not storage vmotion) works if I use as data stores, free space I have in my vsphere servers.

If I have a virtual machine running on the server (a data store also on this server), I will be able to vmotion this virtual machine to Server B or is it possible that with the stored virtual machines in san?

And if so I will be able to always run my VMS on the server B if I put A server in maintenance mode, since the files are on the server, a data store?

    Thank you

For vMotion a VM running between host computers, you must have the virtual machine on the shared storage. You can vMotion cold VM at any place of the host can see/read.

IMO, it's better to have VM on the shared storage, especially once you have more than one host server. Hell, I even my VM, in my lab at home, on a San. Basically, I'm ready for the use of another system as the server host, even if it is only temporary (starting on a USB flash drive) so that I can apply the updates to my primary host...

  • Impossible to migrate using vMotion

    ESX beginner, please, be gentle.

Try to implement vMotion on a new system. When I try to migrate VM 'test' I host '1' to '2', I get this error:

Admin port SAN switch is 192.168.1.240 so assigned to the doors of vMotion. The Network tab for vMotion on the vSwitches ports show only the IP address of a workstation used to manage the SAN switch (192.168.1.46 - 192.168.1.46).

If I try to migrate a virtual machine by host '2' to host '1', I get a similar error, stating that 'VM-02 network NIC02' isn't accessible.

The only references I can find suggests to make the port of vMotion & port even groups, and they seem to be the same.  Vmkping running guests see the other port of vMotion.  The SAN switch can ping all the port of vMotion.

I do not understand why the VM network NIC are involved in a process of vMotion, I thought that the port of vMotion was dedicated for this.

    What Miss me?

    TIA

When you try to VMotion vCenter comments trying to find portgroup named 'VM-01 network NIC02' on the second host. Rename both exchanges to the 'virtual network' and Vmotion will work.

    Why?

    1. VLAN. Each portgroup can be associated with several VLANS to separate traffic.

    2. logical traffic separation. You can add more than one NETWORK interface card to vSwitch and portgroup more than one. Exchanges can be associated with the rules for the use of network cards on vSwitch and cards to be used. For example you wish to have dedicated NIC for just a couple of virtual machines for a few reasons and another NIC for VMs another 20, but you must failover for both. If you associate NIC1 Portgroup "20 VMs" as active and NIC2 as Stand by, NIC1 with Portgroup "VIP VMs" on stand-by and NIC2 as active. Now you have dedicated NICs for exchanges, but if something happens with one of the network adapters, the traffic can go through another.

Because of that, we can discuss the logical networks, you just need to connect VM to the logical network 'Office virtual machines' and ESX it automatically connect to required portgroup. Logical network is a sum of all exchanges with the same name.

  • Ping time out when using VMotion

    Hi all

It seems that I'm getting a single ping or a couple has expired result when you do Vmotion from one node to another. Basically, I run ping t on the virtual machine and then perform a direct migration (VMotion). Everything seems fine, except that I get a result timed out. I tried to hardcode the speed of the NETWORK card in my vmkern and using auto-negotiation, however, the problem persists. I also installed the vmtools on test windows 2003 virtual machine. Am I missing something here?

    Thank you and best regards,

    Dennis

Yes, the one ping timeout is expeted, I think it's mainly because of the cache arp (mac address tables) on physical switches.

The option "notify switch" does not change this behavior.

  • What is the advantages of using VMotion and SRM HA

I have an environment to 2 sites connected through Fiber.I can make a campus cluster between the 2 sites or a failover SRM on one side to the other.

    (1) cluster by HA and VMotion with left environment will give me an environment always up and I need to buy a license of SRM.

    (A) If a building falls down I can still go without a hiccup

    (B) don't have to worry if my SRM will work when site 1 goes down.

    (2) with SRM failover environment

    (A) I can separate sites. What are the benefits?

    (B) MRS will do failover (but then I have to return back with some manual intervention) this means that some downtime.

Can someone tell me what is benefits of SRM when I can make a cluster environment and always be in place?

No Dave you are incorrect in your assumption, a cluster of Metro is two deivces but the SAN attached machine will see a LUN, logical.  the NetApp treats the continuous replication between sites.
