Basic laptop maintenance

Here are a few things that you can perform on a regular basis to ensure that your laptop is in good working condition.  These suggestions are mainly for Windows 7, but should also work in XP, Vista and 8 (the steps may be slightly different however).

Clean the cooling system of the laptop.

A laptop has a limited amount of space on the inside to allow for air/ventilation.  Over time, dust and debris is based in this area, causing a build-up of heat upward.  HP has a document which covers this step as well as a few others to reduce the heat inside your laptop.  It is suggested that you do this every two months or more.  Here is a link to this document.

Run Disk Cleanup and ensure that Disk Defrag is a calendar.

Disk Cleanup will free up space on your hard disk by deleting unnecessary/useless files.  Follow these steps to run Disk Cleanup.

  1. Click Start and then click computer.
  2. Right click on your C: drive and go to properties.
  3. On the general tab, you will see "Disk Cleanup" in the Middle, select this option.
  4. I check all the boxes here, because none of these places should contain required system or user files.  You can leave everything you unchecked.
  5. Press OK and select "Delete files" when prompted.

You want to make sure that the Disk Defragmenter is expected to operate on a time interval that your computer is running normally.  When you save files on a hard disk, they are stored in various locations such as the rotation of the discs (this does not apply to the SSD) and are not usually located in adjacent areas.  Disk defragmentation concludes the parties for files and moves them in areas that are closer.  This reduces the search time for your files - for faster operation.

By default in Windows 7, the Defragmenter is annex to 01:00 every Wednesday.  I don't know about you, but my laptop is usually not lit in one morning.  Follow these steps to change the schedule.

  1. Click Start, type "disk defrag" and press ENTER.  This will bring up the application.
  2. Click on "configure" and set the schedule for a time more appropriate.
  3. Go ahead and launch the defrag utility by selecting "Defragment disk" in the lower right corner.
  4. Now your laptop defragment the drive by the instructions that you set in the annex.

Make sure you have a real-time antivirus protection.

Most of the users who have HP laptops will also have some kind of security on the laptop now.  It's usually something like McAfee or Norton.  If you have a program like this, or another program antivirus, you can skip this step.  Do not install two anti-virus.

For those who do not have an anti-virus, I propose to install Microsoft Security Essentials.  It of free from Microsoft and may provide protection in real time.

Make sure you have an adware/malware scanning application.

Malicious software is no longer only takes the form of a virus.  The most common form of bad software is today 'adware' or 'malware '.  These applications are usually installed alongside other programs without your knowledge.  Do things such as analysis of personal information or allow more software to install.  I would suggest using either Malwarebytes or Spyboy Search & Destroy.  These programs offer no direct protection, so you will need to scan your system at least weekly and remove malware.

Limit the number of programs that start with Windows.

Programs tend to think that you'll want to load as soon as you start in Windows, everytime.  You probably don't need all of this software to load immediately with your laptop.  For example, you can use msconfig to decrease the amount of startup programs.

  1. Click Start, type "msconfig" and press ENTER.
  2. Select the Startup tab.
  3. Click on 'Disable all'.  This command removes all the startup programs upward.
  4. You have probably some programs you want to load during startup in order to double check those.
  5. In addition, recheck all startup items related to Kaspersky Anti-virus.
  6. Press OK and save changes if prompted.

If you would like more information on speeding up the performance of your laptop, I have a few links for you.

    Hello

I bought a Fujitsu AH530 Laptop a few years back.

I had Windows 7 Home Basic pre installed on my laptop. I have the product key original glued to the back of my laptop.

I had backup of my important files. Fujitsu had provided me with Windows 7 installation CD and CD drivers.

How can I reinstall Windows 7 Home Basic Edition and restore my laptop to factory settings.

    Please help urgently.

    Thank you.

    Diallo Blanchet

Use the drivers disk dated Fujitsu since it is a path way to have a functional system, you can always update drivers through Windows Update. It is not essential to have the latest drivers.

Insert the Windows 7 reinstall disk

Restart your computer immediately begin to type f12 for the boot menu.

When the Startup menu appears, choose option 2 or 3 for the DVD player.
When he turns the disc and says "Press any key to boot from the DVD" press a key
    Select a language, INSTALL now
Accept the license and custom advanced install
Patition 0 2 SYSTEM - Select disk DRIVE ADVANCED (lower-right)
Choose the option remove on all partitions display. (1 by 1)
Then click on new, apply and choose the Format...
    Click next to start installation.
It takes about 20 minutes to install the base OS

Proceed to installing the drivers during the installation is complete.

Run Windows Update updates of additional driver.

I would avoid drivers to be honest if they work quite well already.

  • Re: Very slow laptop

Hello, this has probably been posted CIHI thousands of times, but can t find a thread that connects directly to my problem.

I have a Toshiba basic laptop that is only 5 months old, but it's really slow. When I turn the laptop on, it takes about 15 minutes to connect to the internet, I know that it s not the Internet that's the problem as friends brought their computer round one bound to the wireless without any problem.

I always get the Toshiba note book recording ceased work reminder and I was wondering if this has nothing to do with it.

I don't use the computer for surfing the internet and took some vacation photos stored on there with a little music, so t may be that I don't have any space.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    See you soon

    Hi Matt

    What model do you have?
Are you using the original pre-installed OS?

Did you install additional software that can slow down your laptop?

Hi, I was wonderning if anyone knows if there is a slot for PC card on laptop HP 625 specifically for a netgear 108 mbps wireless pc card wg511t thanks for answers

According to the Compaq 325 and 326 PCs HP 425 and 625 Notebook computers laptops - Maintenance and Service of Guide, the model supports one ExpressCard (ExpressCard/34) of 34 mm slot. It seems that your Netgear WG511T required a CardBus PC Card Type II slot. On this basis, the card you is inconsistent without the use of an additional adapter.

  • Questions about maintenance mode

I have some curious (probably dumb) questions on the service mode (esxi worm 51).

    • What is exactly?
    • What happens if you run the patch similar to ' esxcli software vib /vmfs/volumes/datastore/patch_zipfile.zip d install "without putting it in maintenance mode?
    • What happens if you put maintainece mode, install the patch, and then out of maintenance mode before restart? The reason behind this is so that the virtual machines will autostart.

These are just curious of rhetorical questions.

    Thank you!

    Arch

All the maintenance mode has really is sure no VMs are running. In an environment of DRS, VM will migrate automatically away, basically saying maintenance mode "do not put a machine virtual here, is about to have some work." Without the DRS maintenance mode will fail and advise you to move the virtual machines yourself.

Some patches require no maintenance mode and install fine. Those who demand the it will error and refused to apply without maintenance mode.

In the third scenario, the machines will be autostart

  • Change of processor HP 2000-2b16NR

Hi can I update/change my computer's processor laptop (AMD APU E1-1200 with graphics Radeon (TM) HD 1.40 GHz) for a better as 3 GHz or more? I usually use it for games. Thank you

    # You can not.

Only processors compatible with the motherboard of your model are in the following picture of the Maintenance & Service Guide for mobile phones CQ58 and HP 2000. They are all lower in terms of graphics and processing power. The HP 2000 is a pretty basic laptop.

  • Firefox is running at slightly less than 1 GB of storage. Is this normal?

    What is take resources?

There are several factors that may affect use of the RAM. Time is up, Firefox Add-ons you have installed, age of your computer, the malicious software, if you have all the Windows updates and graphic updates driver installed, if you are using the latest plugins, etc. If it is not the cause of performance problems (IE. If firefox still works fine just using 1 GB of RAM) so it's not really a big deal (the firefox to RAM more can make the best use of it will happen, as long as it remains more RAM for the rest of the computer).

You can try a few things to try to reduce the use of the RAM:

I work for a company that sells refurbished PCs and State computers
We recently bought the Germany some laptops refurbished, among them 4 Tecra S3

I have already made contact with the only service of Toshiba in Romania and they told me that do not have the technology to help me?

    Thanks to you all!

These information are not available on the Web from Toshiba websites for public use.

I guess that these internal information are mentioned in laptop maintenance manuals, but to my knowledge, these manuals are released only to authorized Toshiba service providers.

  • Satellite A25-S207 - where can I find the manual for the motherboard?

I need the manual for this motherboard that is installed on a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207, can someone help me?

    Hello

    Bad news boyfriend...
Laptops maintenance manuals are not published on the pages of Toshiba.
It seems that these manuals are not for public use, but only for Toshiba authorized service partners.

But to be honest I don't understand why you need such manual...
The motherboard is a special part of Toshiba designed only for the Satellite A25/A20 series.
So if you want to replace is you must use exactly the same part.

    See you soon

  • Satellite A100 does not recognize the adapter

    Hey guys,.

I looked around this forum and others have not found something that's quite like that. Basically, laptop of my wife (toshiba a100) was working fine and then one day it stops suddenly while recognizing that the power adapter is plugged. The ac adapter light ignition stopped and it will stop charging the battery.

I did not notice that he was not in charge until it was basically empty, so now that the battery is dead and the laptop cannot say certainly not that the power adapter is plugged. I thought the itsellf adapter screwed up, but I tested it with a voltmeter, and it seems to work very well.

Basically, I just want to know if you have tips or tricks to make it work. I guess I'll have to take in for repair, but I wonder what is the real problem, and if it will involve the replacement of the motherboard or something like that?

Thanks for any advice or info, you can give!

    -Matt

What happens if you remove the battery and try to power the laptop connected ONLY to adapter? Is this possible?

    Otherwise there are two possibilities;
The power adapter is faulty or there is something wrong on the motherboard
In both cases, the defective parts must be replaced

I think in this case that only a technician of the laptop might know what's exactly wrong with your machine

  • Satellite Pro a 100 no dΘmarre

    Hello

I have tried to find the solution to my problem but have not found anything better than to put at the service.

Satellite Pro has 100 Notebook left turned on with lid closed (with adapter sector and battery).
A few hours after I opened it but display was extremely dark, though I could see outlines of window. I tried opening and closing lid - but no effect. So I decided to turn off the laptop. I pressed the power button / stop shortly and hold it down for a long time, but without effect. Later, I removed the battery and unplug the AC adapter. Laptop turns off and now we come to the problem.

I inserted back the battery and plugged the power adapter. Power LED and battery led lit and blue (normal situation, means 'battery' and "connected to the power adapter"). I tried to turn on the laptop. However, pressing and holding the power button / stop are completely without effect. No new led and power led and battery LED change not (constant blue light), no noise, nothing happens.

I also tried to turn on laptop only from power supply and from battery without effect. Also tried to remove 1 of 2 RAM modules. Laptop maintenance for a few hours with adapter disconnected and the battery changed nothing.

    The questions are:
-Could you fact defection "open/closed lid switch" causing this problem? And where can I find this switch? It is not close to display, and it is not a small button.
-What could be the possible solution except to the service?
-What could be the problem except the motherboard?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Hello

To be honest, I think the best way is to bring the laptop to an authorized service provider because it's definitely a hardware malfunction.

I put t know what causes this problem, or what is the reason for this, but a mobile technician can check this. Here he s a forum from user to user and you will not find a technician of laptop here. We can only speculate on hardware issues but not stable.

In my case the ASP guys helped me as soon as possible and I have my phone back to only a few days later. Then contact them and explain the situation. They will tell what to do now.
And here you can find the nearest ASP:

  • 32-bit windows on the computer OEM portable 64-bit?

    Hi guys!

I use a lenovo g550 model with an Intel t4500 Penium 20023. official website of the intel, as you can see here, this processor has a 64-bit instruction set, which shows that he is a computer portable 64-bit... But when this laptop was brought, it was delivered with windows 7 32-bit Home Basic. According to what I know, there should be a 64-bit version of this version of windows. I want to know why was shipped like that and if I can pass an operating system Windows 64 bits of purchases.

    Thanks in advance,

    @reya

32 bit OS is the basic option for more pre-built for specific basic laptop. If you need 64-bit OS, you can try to find a 64-bit version of Win 7 home base somewhere, install it and then activate it with the windows serial No. you have on the sticker of authenticity of mobile.

Lenovo will charge you for the 64 bit version of the recovery media.
