Basin balanced on several hosts (No. SAN)

Im running 4.6.  I have a pool of composer view limited to one host running the local storage.  I'm the ability for this host.  My question is it possible to allocate a second host, using its local storage space, have the pool balanced between the two hosts.  I'm guessing that he should create a replica for each data store.  Is it possible to Setup?

TIA

Tony

Just to test this point for you, I created a test tank my view cluster and two of the local data stores selected as storage device.   The virtual machine was deployed in two stores of data with no problems and you are right that there is a replica on each data store.

  • Deploy multiple virtual machines on several hosts evenly?

    Hello people!

I wrote a small script to deploy many virtual machines on several hosts at random.

But I would rather deploy a virtual machine to each host in a table and then start over again until the number of virtual machines to deploy exhausted.  Distribution of the burden of deployment as evenly as possible.

One way to do this is with the modulo operator (%), something like this

    1.. $numVMs | %{

  • Migration of servers to new host and SAN

    Hello

    Current configuration:

2 x ESXi servers, local storage, share nothing.  License of VMWare Essentials

    New configuration:

3 x SAN Eqllogic, ESXi servers. Essential Plus VMWare license

I would like to make the transition to the new configuration with minimal downtime, we have invited a few large (> 1 TB) on one of the servers and I don't want them to be disconnected for more than a few minutes, then a migration cold is out of the question.

I had a thought that I could put the license key more on the old servers and 1 new servers, set the new SAN on the old servers, use VMWare replication to replicate virtual machines among the old servers to the new server/storage, and then perform a recovery.

I would then remove this old Vsphere server, add a new server and transfer the license, then perform the same task on the old server to 2nd.

Once it is finished I remove the old server 2, add the new 3rd server, and move the license.

Can someone tell me if this is possible, or suggest alternatives?

    Thank you

    Dean.

    Hi Dean,

Replication (replication vSphere) VMware will be requires downtime when you are recovering from the old host to new host.

How much time can you afford for downtime?

The recovery process will turn off the source/protected VM on the current host (VM function how long it would normally take to perform a shutdown comments) and destination/recovery VM will be powered on to a new host (again, depends on VM normally, how long it would take for the operating system and services until then a normal diet on the process).

vSphere replication requires vSphere Web Client and other requirements, as described here: 5.5 - replication requirements vSphere vSphere Documentation Centre

    You have a vCenter Server?
What version of ESXi (and vCenter) do you use?

If you don't have a vCenter Server yet, I suggest you install a vCenter server and add all the current 2 ESXi hosts + 1 new ESXi host.

From there, you'll have an ESXi 3 host, then you can migrate current ESXi host for new.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 + you can vMotion, even if the host do not have access to the same storage see this: library of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion in environments without storage shared

Its quite simple, if you are using vSphere 5.1 +.

-Make sure you have vcenter Server 5.1 + with vSphere Web Client

-Add current hosts + 1 new hosts

-Make sure the vMotion without requirement for shared storage are filled with VSphere 5.5 Documentation Center - requirements and restrictions for vMotion without Shared Storage

-Perform vMotion without process Shared Storage of current host to the new host + local storage to SAN EqualLogic - you can start with small VM and VM less critical first if you are not sure.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated to the new host + EqualLogic SAN, you can do a maintenance on the current host mode, and then delete the vCenter Server (vSphere licenses will be retrieved)

-Add the 2 remaining new hosts.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 prior, you must present the SAN EqualLogic again 1 new host and current 2 hosts.

Once current hosts can see the EqualLogic SAN, make a Storage vMotion (live migration records) local storage to the EqualLogic.

For first migration vSphere 5.1, there are 2 ways that I can think of:

    1. with vMotion - without interruption

There are certain requirements of configuration for vMotion work: Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion

Make sure your classes and new hosts are run in the same processor / EVC mode or matrix, you can check it out here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=cpu

If they are on different EVC Mode, you can turn on the CEV on new hosts.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Perform a vMotion from the current host to new host.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

    2. without vMotion - requires the interruptions of service commissioning

It's cold migration but without migration of storage, must be less compared to downtime directly cold immigration to localdisk of shared storage.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Turn off the virtual machines in the current hosts and migrate (cold) of the host-to-host former New (you can also drag the virtual computer and drop it to the new host).

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

  • several host esx on an iSCSI LUN?

I use openfiler as my iSCSI target, and I just traced all the space available for a logic unit number with the intention to use it for the three ESX hosts.

Can I share a LUN on multiple ESX hosts?

(or, I have to create three LUNS... one per ESX host).

The reason I want to do a logic unit number is so I can bring up a VM on another ESX host without adding storage or move the files of the virtual machine.

It is supported and even necessary for things like vMotion, etc.. Just make sure you have your SAN configured to allow simultaneous access to the same target.

    Hi all

is it possible to have a target of crio running a central VI that exchanges data with the host screw turns on different hosts?

    Thank you very much

    Harry

You must create an exe of the target code and deploy it to the target then run only the codes of the host on different computers. Make sure that you don't have any dependency of the target code in your host code. The error you posted will happen only when you are already running a code on the target, and if you try again to deploy the code in the same target of another computer.

  • I would like to revive the officer on several hosts

I would like to revive the MA on different hosts, using a file entry for host names.  Does anyone have something similar to this or can point me in the right direction please?

    Thank you

I suspect that might be a problem

When the ESXi is not connected to the vCenter, the Get-VMHostService may not work.

    IMHO, there are 2 alternatives

    1) connect to each ESXi host with the Connect-VICenter cmdlet and restart once connected to the service in the same way as I showed

    2) connect to the interface of the ILO.

If I remember correctly there is a PowerShell library for this.

But I don't know how you can use this to restart a service on the ESXi.

  • VMotion between several hosts

I have just joined a company that executes 2 guests on ESXi 4.1 Standard, and both hosts have 1 CPU.

I have get a business license for the two hosts to allow storage vmotion, but would welcome that bumping the hosts up to 2xCPUs (with additional CPU licenses).

If finance means that I can't upgrade the two hosts, for example, if you had 1xCPU and the other 2, vmotion would fail? If so, will create a VCA basic iron out this problem?

    Thank you

    Hello..

vMoton should work just fine for a long time the CPU being identical acrosse the two hosts and ofc with good installed licenses.

It doesn't matter if a host has only one and another two physical processors. (Ive got a mixed cluster here with some guests with 2xCPUs and some CPU 4 x)

VCA troubleshoots only presenting sets of features identical CPU on all hosts as long they are in the same family... See more details here: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212

  • Several Host Isolation

Imagine a scenario where we had a HA of four nodes cluster spread on a campus with two nodes in one place and two in the other. What would the host isolation response if the network connection between the two sites has been lost?

If we lose a host then the TI is known to be isolated after 12 years and then failed aftet 15s. If we lose two, however, nobody is isolated and I am assuming that nothing happens.

Now; Imagine that we have warehouses of data which are all shared, but some are in one site and some are in the other. Guests running on local data warehouses would be unaffected. Guests who are running on data warehouses remote fails. The question is: what will happen to the hosts failed?

    Thank you

    Warren Barnes

Before you answer this in detail, I want to make sure I'm clear on my assumptions:

    1. There are 4 hosts in the cluster, two on each side of the stretch. If this is the case, then all 4 hosts are primary. (The first 5 guests in any cluster are primary, so you get only secondary when there are 6 or more hosts).

2 If the network fails between the two sites, storage will be split-brain as well? I guess that Yes, based on one of your comments.

    If, in view of the #1 site hosts A and B, and site #2 a hosts C a D...

If, after the split between site 1 and 2, and B can still heart rhythm with each other, and C and D can pulse between them then there is no answer tried insulation. Answers insulation kick only in when a host can not with any of the other primitives of the heart rate, and it can also ping the address of isolation (usually the gateway (s)) for networks that host is on.

So what happens is that A & B site 1 to conclude that C & D at site 2 have failed. And vice versa. A and B will try to power - on the virtual machines that are running on C and D, even for C & D - they will try and power on virtual machines that have been on A and b. Now, because the storage of some virtual machines can be found at site 1 and storage other virtual machines are at site 2, some of the power-ons may fail because the storage is not accessible. But as A & B will attempt to power on the set of the VMS C & D and C & D will attempt to power on the set of virtual machines of A & B (that means that admission control allows all of these power-ons) then each VM will end up under tension correctly on each site 1 or site 2.

Now for the ugly part - if any of the VMS to site 1 lost their storage in the score, or vice versa, then the vmware-vmx process who represent these virtual machines always operate on one or more hosts on the side of the partition that has lost the storage and there is now a process vmware-vmx representative the same virtual machine running on a host across the partition that has now acquired a lock on this VM. None of this is a problem until the partition joined. This is so the behavior described by Elisha happens - that is to say the virtual machine appears to bounce back between the two hosts until the answer to the question on the lock lost by pointing the VC client directly to the host. And as he pointed out, the question will be auto-répondu by VC to vSphere 4.0 U2 and above.

  • Stop several hosts and the virtual machine on the host computers

Sorry to bother the community again. Right now I have a script that stop or suspend virtual machines on a host in order using an external file to store the order (with the help of lamw). The plan is for the script to reside in a virtual centre with multiple hosts. The script must be able to stop the vm on the host, the closure of the host (to be ordered the same idea with the external file), then jump to the next host and continue the same process. I tried to create nested for loops this task, but it doesn't seem to work. Any help would be appreciated. I have attached the script. Thanks in advance

I think you try to only syspend or stop each VM and then stop the host.

    This code might help.
