Because of the Extensions of virtualization ESXi MANDATE Intel, what other products?

This may seem obvious, but I already said x 86 virtualization extensions to improve the performance of the virtual machine, but are not required to run virtual machines.

I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant DL380 G4 of second hand.  The processor specifications are as follows:

2 x 3.40 GHz

800 MHz front side bus

2 MB of L2 Cache

Cela rising site Intel here: http://processorfinder.Intel.com/list.aspx?ProcFam=528 gives me a shortlist of 3 processors, which none have 'Intel virtualization technology'.

I have managed to install ESXi 4.0 without problem but cannot install Ubuntu Server Edition on a virtual machine, as it says I need a disc compatible i686.  (I tried both 32 and 64 bit discs without result).  However, I am able to boot from the drive natively without all these error messages.

In the BIOS of the machine, I can find no mention of virtualization extensions, so I am lost to what is the problem.

If this is the case, are there any alternatives for me to virtualize this machine? (i.e. ESXi 3.5, ESX)

Thanks in advance

It takes on hosts for 64-bit clients Intel VT - x.  See KB 1003945.  VT - x is not required for 32-bit clients.  This is true for all VMware virtualization products.
