• 2 guests on 1 physical server (running ESXi 5.5)?

I'm new to VMware, I have 1 server Dell PowerEdge R420 in my new company that is used for virtual machines (running ESXi 5.5)... and I've been through, there 2 hosts running in 2 IP ranges, each host contains a few virtual machines... is it possible to have 2 guests on 1 Physical (ESXi) or am I wrong somewhere ?

• Unable to boot from USB thumbdrive running ESXi 5

  I have a workstation xw6600 I used as my sandbox for ESXi from 4.0. So I decided it was time to become familiar with ESXi 5, so before starting to run our upgrade to ESXi 5 in all our servers I wanted to update my own sandbox. I tried first of all to make an update to 4.1 update 1 who does not like I special HP drivers installed, so I decided to make a brand new install ESXi 5 using VMware bootable CD. The installation seems to be successful, but when the supposed to reboot from the USB system I get the typical mistake of the BIOS indicates that no BONES were found "no disk system or disk error." ». For a year I've been running ESXi in this system without problems. I am currently starting from 4.1 update 1 from a USB, if I look that the problem was the installation process in my sandbox (after hours of troubleshooting and several creations of CD), so I did an installation in one of our server (DL360G7). Everything went find I could only start in ESXi 5 no problem (using the same CD I create above). I took this USB to my sandbox and tried to boot from it and still the same error. I can not even boot my laptop from the USB. Does anyone know what changes to the startup procedure in ESXi 5 compare to ESX 4.0?

  From my understanding, if you create a new 5.0 installation, then it will only start using UEFI.

  However, if you upgrade an ESXi in 5.0, it retains the original MBR boot.

• BIOS on R710 (running ESXi 5.1)

  Hi - I'm trying to update the BIOS on a server R710 ESXi 5.1.  Here are the steps I've taken so far:

  (1) using the repository Manager, I exported the PER710 (Windows Bundle) as a 'SUU to the directory"on a USB pendrive
  (2) I copied Catalog.xml.gz and Catalog.xml.gz.sign in the directory \repository on the USB drive.
  (3) I started my server R710 in the unified Server Configurator
  (4) select Platform Update and launch platform update
  (5) select Local drive and selected the detected USB
  (6) it scans and detects the updates successfully
  (7) I select the BIOS update and apply it and I am presented with the following error:

  "The update packages that you have chosen to install failed during download or installation.  Retry the operation or provide another space storage. »

  Anyone can report what I do wrong?  I am running firmware iDrac6 1.95 (Build5) performance and life-cycle 1.6.0.73.

  If you just need update BIOS and not all of the firmware, you can use windows update package downloads.dell.com/.../R710_BIOS_VCNMH_WN32_6.3.0.EXE for the usb copy and point directly to this file from the controller of the life cycle and not having to worry about the catalog files.

  Have you copied the content full of the drop to the USB directory or just the update and the catalog files? He is looking for the update in the same folder as the file catalog.

  If you have the PERC controller, simply add the disk in half.

  If you have OpenManage (OMSA), you can create new RAID configuration without restarting your system.

  Otherwise, just restart the system, enter the PERC BIOS, create a new virtual disk.

  Then, in ESX / Setup / storage card be sure to see the new drive (if it is not a new analysis).

  Then just add a new data store (in Configuration / Storage).

• The good hardware specification to run ESXi

  I have plan to run about 2 DCs and 4 servers on a single VMWare ESXi 3.5 or 4 Exchange and use the local storage and not SAN for our software development department.

  What would be a good spec for the material of their performance?  I know that it depends on how it will be used, number of users, etc, but I'm looking for a more general recommendation based on your experiences.

  The processor type, the number of processors and amount of memory.

  I looked at DELL PE 2950 with the following specifications:

  -2 x Quad Core Intel Xeon X 5355 2x4MB Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB

  -16 GB of memory

  And if there is a big difference in performance running Exchange 03/07 on a VMWare ESXi vs physical?

  I managed to work around this problem by restarting the ESXi host, so it's not critical.

  I had a case where I couldn't start a virtual machine because its files were always locked by a process running on the ESXi host that was running at the origin of the VM.

  I know that with the ordinary ESX hosts, there is a procedure to kill the process that still has the locked files.  However, with ESXi I do not have a console to connect to.

  Not to mention that the computer restarting host physical ESXi, how can you find a process and end it on a locked files VM ESXi host?

  You do not have to restart the ESXi host, but you will need to use the UNSUPPORTED as Nick shell.  Once you do, you can use ps to find the process and kill to kill the process.  You can enable ssh as well, but who would need to display the console not supported first then edit le/etc/inetd.conf.

• Unable to run ESXi 5.5 computer at home

  I'm trying to test and learn from vSphere 5 for work and finds it difficult to install ESXi. I get ' no network adapters... "error. I tried 5 different cards and always got the same message. I tried to install ESXi as a bare metal installation, on Hyper-V and Xen server and still have the error. Not sure why vmware makes it so difficult for someone to learn their product. Super looking pretty good right now. Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get ESXi runnning?

  problem is, that ESXi does not have drivers for your network adapters, because they are probably not on the VMware HCL: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

  As a workaround for testing purposes, you can install ESXi as a virtual machine in VMware Player, which is free for non-commercial use.

  Yes you can - is one of the methods of the console. To access the console use the mode "not supported".

  I have a vmware image of Win Server 2008 I am able to run on a vmplayer running the Ubuntu 64 bit PC. According to vmplayer, it's a workstation image 9.

  I also had vm workstation 8 32-bit on a 32-bit PC Win7, but I am unable to run the image here, probably because the host is only 32-bit.

  I now run the image on a 64-bit server running ESXi 5.1. I know there are steps to export an image workstation to ESXi via my computer, but my workstation allows 32-bit vm convert a 64-bit image? What are my options?

  It is less the host operating system that is important, it is the CPU that you use and available BIOS options (e.g. "VT - x" for Intel processors)

  ESXi does not support the format of sparse virtual disk Workstation uses by default, so you can use VMware Converter to convert/transfer the image of the workstation to ESXi.
