Best method to upgrade/migrate vCenter 4.0 to 4.1?

Hello

I thought a lot about the best method for my server vCenter 4.0 to 4.1 upgrade/migration. I currently have vCenter 4.0 on a * virtual machine * which was a PITA when it comes to maintenance, so I would just stand up a new * physical Machine * and install vCenter 4.1 on it. I want to downgrade the existing vCenter of VM 4.0 altogether and just use this new physical server to manage my host ESX to vCenter 4.1.

It would be possible to disregard of any * update procedures * and just set up a new vCenter 4.1 from scratch on the new server, or are there no warnings special I should be informed when turning off my server vCenter 4.0 service existing to make appear a new vCenter 4.1 online?

Any techies VM colleagues help or advice may provide for my scenario will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I need to get up my new physical server w / SQL Server 2008;

Yes

I need to save my existing vCenter 4.0 DB;

Yes

I need to restore my vCenter 4.0 DB from the existing to the new server server then;

Yes

Then I need to install vCenter 4.1;

Yes

I then copy the directory SSL from 4.0 to 4.1 existing new

None... You will need to create the directory structure, before installing vCenter.  \ProgramData\VMware\VMware then copy of VirtualCenter to the SSL Directory and then start installing vCenter.

    Hello

    We are currently running a vCenter 2.5 5 update on Windows 2003 32-bit Standard that we need to upgrade to vCenter 4. Unfortunately the latest version 4.1 needs a 64 bit OS...

    What is the best practice to update our vCenter 4.1 and keep all performance data? I suppose we ought to do it in severalsteps or not?

    (1) vCenter 4.0 Update 2 update

    (2) a copy of the updated vCenter database backup

    Is this correct or am I missing something? Is there a more easy/better way?

    Any help appreciated.

    Hello.

    KO 1022104 contains best practices, and the Upgrade Guide is also a great resource to use for this upgrade planning.  Follow the steps in the Upgrade Guide and everything should go smoothly.

    This is a really difficult list of steps, confirmed by the Upgrade Guide:

    01 build of new VMS 64-bit for vCenter

    02. prep new vCenter VM for connectivity / SQL dependencies

    03. backup of the existing database.

    04 data backup current vCenter using Data Migration tool

    05 use the data migration tool to start the setup of the vCenter server and restore the configuration of the server vCenter to the destination machine.

    06 turn off from the old server vCenter.

    07 restore the vCenter Server Configuration and installing vCenter Server on the new server

    08 updated vCenter Server name of Plug-Ins (if the new vCenter has a different name)

    09. test cycle

    Good luck!

    I want to do a clean install of El Capitan. I am currently using Mavs 10.9.5 and my time machine goes back to 2010. I don't want to migrate everything. I want to start cleaning up. I read a few methods, but I'm curious to know if there is some consensus as to the best method.

    Make sure that you have a Time Machine backup.

    Download El Capitan and do an install from USB.

    Start the installer from USB and install it.

  • Best way to upgrade of domain Active Directory from 2003 to 2008

    I have a specific situation.  I need to upgrade an AD 2003-2008r2.  We are not comfortable making the leap for 2012.  Basically, the original design was 5 offices of each with a domain controller.  Each domain controller has a file share, but also the "Users" folder  I thought up starting with the new servers side by side.  DCPromo the 2008r2 new servers to domain controllers.  What is the best method to move the file shares and files users in this case?  Once files are moved I can then DCPromo down servers 2003 and raise to the 2008 field.  All IP addresses are static throughout the environment.  He didn't design this way... but having to deal with it.

    This issue is beyond the scope of this site (for consumers) and to be sure, you get the best (and fastest) reply, we have to ask either on Technet (for IT Pro) or MSDN (for developers)

  • Upgrade to vCenter 5.0 to 5.5 - agent backward compatibility?

    I'm moving from 5.0 to 5.5.  As I did this is that I have a VM vCenter standalone.  I cloned it (run sysprep, etc.) and then upgraded the clone to not touch anything we have in production.

    When asked to upgrade the agents on the hosts, I chose that I have them will modernize manually at a later date.

    So first of all the question, are backward compatible with 5.0 agents?  Or once that I upgrade, only vCenter 5.5 will be able to connect?

    What is the best way to return to agent 5.0 if I have problems after upgrading to 5.5 agent?

    In my client web vCenter 5.5, I'll try to add the hosts when even just to see if there is a connectivity (understand an error message could say that much) but I don't see a way to add them manually.  It appears when I select hosts, he starts searching for them (and can't find anything that is what I expected).

    I want to just make sure that what seems to behave correctly because there is no agent 5.5 host out there.

    Thank you much for the help.

    vCenter Server 5.5 supports the hosts of version 4.x and later... There is no need restoration agent and you can still run the vCenter Agent pre-upgrade Checker host before upgrading the server vCenter Server.

    1: Yes

    2: no

    3: no

    4: depends on what policies of power you are using.  Since vCenter is going to be offline you won't be able to start and stop machines.  The best thing is to change your feeding strategy for always under tension and ensure that all machines are available during the interview of vCenter.

  • Best method for SRM

    With 5 guests and replication of VM 75 which method is preferred for best practices

    (1) deploy vCenter SRM

    (2) deploy SRM in dedicated VM (uses vCenter, database)

    (3) deploying MIS in dedicated VM (separate database)

    Hello

    Second option is the best option that is deployed in dedicated SRM VM (uses vCenter Database) because

    The MRS Server works as an extension to the vCenter Server on a site server. Because the MRS server depends on vcenter Server for some services, you must install and configure vCenter Server on a site before you install SRM.

    SRM benefits of vCenter services, such as storage management, authentication, authorization, and personalization of comments. MRS also uses the standard set of vSphere administrative tools to manage these services.

  • Best method of automation by adding a value in the comments advanced options

    I need to add a value in the advanced options in all my virtual machines, which means I have to turn them off, change the configuration and turn on again them.

    I was wondering what is the best method if automate this since I did not intend to do it manually (if this is a bit special virtual machine).

    The environment is vSphere with vCenter 4.1 4.1 and VMs are Windows Server and Linux SLES.

    Somebody had to do something similar?

    Hello, caddo-

    A way to add a setting to a virtual machine is to use a VirtualMachineConfigSpec and the ReconfigVM() of a VirtualMachine object method.  So, for the advanced option that you mentioned, you can use something like:

    ## the name of the VM to reconfig$strMyVMName = "someVM0"$vmMyVM = Get-VM $strMyVMName

    ## create a new ConfigSpec to configure the VM$spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec -Property @{    extraConfig = New-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue -Property @{        Key = "monitor_control.disable_mmu_largepages"        Value = "TRUE"    } ## end new-object OptionValue} ## end new-object ConfigSpec

    ## reconfig the VM with the given ConfigSpec$vmMyVM.ExtensionData.ReconfigVM($spec)

    ## update the VM's View data$vmMyVM.ExtensionData.UpdateViewData("Config.ExtraConfig")

    ## check the advanced option setting (ExtraConfig item)$vmMyVM.ExtensionData.Config.ExtraConfig | ?{$_.Key -eq "monitor_control.disable_mmu_largepages"}

    This establishes the additional configuration for a virtual machine.  You can adjust easily to many/all virtual machines (date you probably pass by using the ReconfigVM_Task() method, which runs asynchronously).  Enjoy.

  • What is the best method to move from an iPhoto from one Mac to another library?

    What is the I best method for export/transfer my iPhoto on MBP to the iPhoto library library on my iMac? I prefer to keep my metadata intact; I guess that to do a package contents 'show' of my iPhoto and AirDropping the 'masters' library, I won't lose it? I'm under El Capitan 10.11.4 on Mac.

    I just want to explain my situation because maybe I'm missing something. I have SUMMER will use the photo library iCloud for synchronization on all my Apple devices and as a backup off-site. Fortunately, I realized soon as enough it would become a management NIGHTMARE. I downloaded everything from iCloud to my MBP and want to get it all on my iMac, so I can clean up the mess of duplicates and others.

    I couldn't synchronize with realism of the iCloud photo library to my iMac because I would have had to download about 150 + GB of data, so that I can download the 30 or GBs who were on my families iOS devices iCloud and the MBP. ICloud photo library interface is NOT well designed or easy to use - download directly from the cloud is heavy at best.

    All tips are appreciated, thanks.

    Simply connect the two Macs together and drag the library in the pictures of the new mac folder - or use an external hard drive to the Mac OS extended (journaled) format and drag through - then launch iPhoto on the new system

    Move the masters moves original photos and metadata exactly as they were imported without organization

    And iCloud library isn't an option for iPhoto - it requires OS X 10.10.1 and photos 1 or later version
