Best way to determine what virtual machines switched from HA

I've run into several situations where a lot of my cluster failed and HA was kicking, causing my virtual restart on another host.  Users in my company are asking if he machines are affected.

I usually watch the host event logs to determine which customers have been affected, but wonder if there is a better way (Tools, scripts, automated reports, etc.).  I'm under ESXi 5.0 and DRS allowed through Automation complete.

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

  • Best way to move a virtual machine to new hardware

I have a SBS 2011 VMS under ESXi 5.  The material is not enough and performance are slowed down.  I want to spend the SBS 2011 VMS to new hardware.  After install ESXi on the new hardware, which is the best way to move the virtual machine.  It's big enough, and it is a production server - I'm looking for fast and efficient.  What are the most common problems when moving from a virtual computer to new hardware?  Thank you!

A virtual machine is encapsulated in a set of files, making it easy to carry; You can copy the files from the virtual machine using WinSCP or any other program to the destination host. Register the vmx on the new host and turn on the virtual machine. You may also look @ of Veeam FastSCP for this purpose. I have not had the chance to use it yet, but it's free and seems very popular with the community:

  • What is the best way to determine what running processes are essential?

I'm trying so some cleaning and optimization of my desktop PC and -.

My installation of Vista Edition Family Premium is now on about 4 years - update SP2 and all updates.

Over time, I have installed and uninstalled several programs - and solved the problems of speed and optimization in turning and on various programs from startup, process and services.

Now, some doing cleaning - I'm not sure that the Services have been installed with Vista, which were added by programs installed, and I can stop or terminate, switch from automatic to manual or disable...

I would appreciate suggestions on how best to get a handle: (1) what are the Vista Services initially installs, including through SP2. and (2) how to match processes and program Services.

From there on, I should be able to distinguish other Vista services running that are service-related and then determine which I need and you do not need.

Also - I have installed TweakVI and trying to determine if she done something, or if I would be better off without her.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Best way to migrate a virtual machine from local drive to Cluster?

    Hello

For historical reasons, we set up a virtual machine in the local disk of the ESX host.  This host is not connected to the San, where there is one group of another 3 ESX host.

We would like to remove this standalone ESX host and migrate the virtual computer to the Cluster.  Should what tools I use?  Can use us the converter to do?  If so, when we connect to the Infrastructure of VI, does connect to the version independent host ESX OR import this virtual machine to an ESX Hos in the cluster?

    Thank you

    Hello

your ESX host is connected to your vCenter?

If Yes just turn off the virtual machine right click in vSphere client and choose migrate. Select destination storage and ESX server and it will be migrated.

If it's not I turn off the virtual machine and just copy the whole directory of the VM on the new ESX Server with scp on ssh.

    Coltrane,

to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another, shut down the virtual computer and copy the complete folder with all the files (vmx, vmdk,...) on another PC.

A thin to keep in mind (outside the Windows license) if the virtual machine is one attached to your network, you must change the copied disk - as you would with a cloned physical system - to have a unique host name, MAC address and IP address.

  • Best way to determine the amount of disk space is required for a deployment of office?

We are conducting an assessment on the Lake and he examines disk space total used by our desktop computers, but I want to determine how much space SAN we need for our driver. What is the best way to understand this assuming we go with linked Clones, but have yet to determine how many bases we have pictures...

It is counting on the OS and the numbers of virtual machines, for linked clone images, you might need a few of them, one for the standard user, one for the user of the task and one for users with power "admins".

Also, is that the application will be with the operating system or using ThinApp?

All these he had to be consider about before you go to the design of the storage, think also about having the SSD in your host supported replica image "linked clone.

When you Hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system memory in the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys file will always be equal to the amount of physical memory in your system. If you don't use the Hibernate feature and want to reclaim the space used by Windows for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

-Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to start, settings, Control Panel, and then click Power Options).
-Select the Hibernate tab, uncheck "Activate the hibernation", and then click OK. Although you might think otherwise, selecting never under "Hibernate" option on the power management tab does not delete the hiberfil.sys file.

  • Best practices for backup of virtual machine.

    Hello guys,.

I have a question about the virtual machine snapshot backup option.

In our environment, we use symantec netbackup and it is managed by an administrator of aid. It has implemented the process in a way where the snapshot of the virtual machine is scheduled and then the snapshot is saved in netbackup daily. Once the snapshot backup process is completed, the snapshot is deleted.

    My concerns:

1 - remove the snapshot - wouldn't it increase the size of the virtual machine every day?

2 - is enough to restore the virtual machine snapshot disaster?

    3. what happens if a virtual machine has a lot of snapshots?

    Please help.

A snapshot (delta) file contains only data blocks that have been changed and a reference to their original location in the virtual disk Basic. Maybe http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 helps to clarify this.

  • How do I create standard vSwitches in a HA cluster where the virtual machine switches to the same network?

I have a lab put in place with 2 hosts 5.5 ESXi and vCenter.  I want to create a situation where each virtual machine must have a dedicated network card.  If I create vSwitchABC on host 1, what should I do on host 2?  Create vSwitchABC on that host too and connect it to the same physical switch?  Which will allow the host 1 failure and the virtual machine to arrive on host 2 on the network because the same vSwitch names?

    Thank you!

Welcome to the community-Yes, you need to create a vswitch on host 2 has a virtual machine port group with the same name on host 1 connection on the same subnet as connected to the host - 1

  • Way to hide certain virtual machines on a common host networks?

I hope it's one of those moments "duh" and there is an easy solution.

Let says I have two clusters.  One of the piles is a lab with a copy of Active Directory environment used for testing purposes.  This cluster is now in a cycle of life, and I want to merge with the production cluster and remove former hosts of ESXi lab.  We add laboratory for the cluster of production networks and all is well for the laboratory of virtual machines that are not migrated on him.

However, we do not want someone to accidentally assign a production VM to a network of laboratories and vice versa.  So when you go into edit a virtual machine, and then select the NETWORK card, there is a drop-down list that displays all the networks, including new laboratory that were just added networks.  I want to hide the network of laboratories of our production domain controllers and hide our production networks where the laboratory domain controllers.  But because they are all on the same cluster, it seems to me that all subnets are fair game for select in the drop-down list.  Or am I wrong?  Is there a way to lock the network to only certain virtual machines so that they do not show up for other virtual machines to choose?

Thank you and sorry if there is an obvious solution to what I am about.

    SB

    Hey SB,.

Not sure if this is possible, to be honest, as a virtual machine are all port groups, that it has the right. Now that I think of it, maybe create two different groups of seggregating production and test/lab put in place might work because you would not be able to connect to a virtual computer on a cluster to a portgroup on a host.

Names must be different, but otherwise you could see similar across clusters names if the port groups may be two different entities altogether. Other than that, can't really invent any scenerios in which a portgroup wouldn't appear on a virtual machine if it is present on a host
