Best way to reinstall Windows 7 on a virtual machine

I have 2 questions, first, I'm sure I know the answer to but it leads to the second.

I have a new Windows 7 Machine. I have played with it for a bit, but now intend to install server 2002 on it, then use W7 in a virtual environment.

The questions are:

1. I'm pretty sure of browsing the forum, I know the answer to this and its no.! but that's still...

My original plan was to install the server and use dual boot but use the virtual w7 on a daily basis, rather than one that came on the machine - if I wqill need it is longer than the 30 days grace period. Can I use the same key for both because they are both on the same computer / hardware? Most of the forums seem to say no, but also a distinction that it runs on the same computer / hardware - it will be - only virtually.

I can use other virtual machines to win 7, but these will be tests for the main environment and will be very temporary.

2 assuming that the answer 1 is not and I'll have to install the server and then use my W7 key on a new installation in a virtual environment, what is the best way to backup everything on the current w7 machine and restore it to the w7 machine I create virtually?

Note: I have 2 drives - 500 GB which I intend to mirror using the server (and then install another but that is not relevant to this ATM), but in the short term can I save photos, music and other files I want this player. It is mainly the files and installs them, personal settings, home group game settings etc... I want to be able to restore to the new environment of W7.

Even if the answer to 1 is Yes, this information would be useful as I would like to create my current environment of W7 on the virtual machine.

I will note that I have legal and valid product (in reason, where I work) keys for:

Server 2008

Windows 7 Professional x 2 (even if I intend to use one on a separate physical computer - I only want one on the machine that I put the server use)

Thank you

Nicci x

Thanks for the reply.

The goal is to learn windows server.

I have a knowledge base of what I do, but only with A + / N + level but who seek to expand and learn things myself.

I have 5 machines in the House and want to create a windows network using the server. The main engine was purchased for this purpose.

Can I install server on a virtual machine in win7 then? That would probably make life easier

Yes, you can. Do you intend to set up as a domain controller and have the clients to connect to it? If you want clients to connect to it as the other 5 machines which must run a Windows business edition, then its better you double boot with the existing installation of Windows 7. It is also very easy. He just set up a partition in Windows 7, boot from the disk of Windows Server 2008 R2 and select the partition where you want to install Windows Server 2008.

Win7 is pro - these two licenses - with the machine, I bought. It came preinstalled but is a clean install without all the dell tools etc... Add.

The other has not been used or turned on but goes to another machine.

Is Server 2008 R2

I know and understand the process of rearmament, thanks. The goal is to create a network within the home and begin to define AD profiles, use the server as a proxy and whole ton of other plans.

I understand the potential challenges, I have created for me but I wanted to understand the best, legal way to go on this issue.

I have a product key for server 2008 - I'm not trying to use the same one for server and win 7.

Recommended or not, that's what I asked at the start - backup current win 7 and restaurant then in a virtual machine created on Server 2008 possible?

No, it will not work. As suggested, for your test environment, its best you dual boot.

  • Best way to make a copy of a virtual machine in ESXi 4 and the free version of vSphere client

    Hello

    I have:

    ESXi 4 Update 1, vSphere 4.0 Build 208167, vmware converter 4.0.1 client build 16.12.34

VM is Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent

I'm trying to make a clone of a virtual machine for the purpose of creating one server of another out of it.  I use the converter and still after I have successfully connected to the virtual machine, I always get the error "Unable to get information about the selected machine material" when you click Next.

My goal is to create a virtual machine.  Put an operating system on it, and then just use it as a model to create other virtual machines.  Is there a way to make that either is not involved or pay for an upgrade order lines?

If it means order lines, could someone please go through the steps to achieve this?

It would be great if I could understand why the converter does not work.  I heard I could drop-down list for version 3.0, but I could not find it available for download.

    Thank you!

Name change is not necessary, as the vmdk files will be isolated in the new VM folder. If you want to rename on the concern of the Organization, you will need the vmkfstools on RCLI user, but I think really is not so necessary, so you do not use complicated distributions of disc inside your data store.

About converter, I just wanted to know how you use it. Nevermind install again, I had kind of her. Check the settings change VM, on the Options tab, if the guest operating system is configured correctly. Even if this is the case, change to another, click ok and then configure it to the right and test to boost conversion.

  • What is the best way to upgrade Windows 7 Professional to Windows 7 Ultimate

What is the best way to upgrade Windows 7 Professional to Windows 7 Ultimate to load the language packs?

    Hello
Welcome to the Microsoft community. Sorry for the delay in responding.

Please take a look at this article for more information on the upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Upgrade to another edition of Windows 7 by using Windows Anytime Upgrade but now it would be better if you upgrade to Windows 10 directly. If you have Windows 7 Professional, you qualify for a free update to Windows Professional 10.

    Upgrade to Windows 10

Which edition of Windows I get as part of the free update?

To install the language packs take a look at this article.

Windows 7 language packs are available for computers that are running Windows 7 ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise

Hope that the information provided has been helpful and let us know if you need more help. We will be happy to help you.

  • Windows 7 - how? -Virtual Machine, Dual Boot

I used Windows 8 until yesterday, but I decided to upgrade to Windows 7, because it was recommended and it supports all the necessary software that we use.

I have a virtual machine was a natural choice, but then I struggled with my COM port that did not appear in the virtual computer's Device Manager. I'm desperate

and almost tried a dual boot, but double boots, you are supposed to install the oldest operating system first! It would mean having to completely uninstall Windows 8.1.

Am I missing something here? What is the best way to get Windows 7 running on my laptop so I can use the COM ports and use SSH to connect to Hugues paurais?

    Thanks for reading,

    Kevin

I use Windows 7 on an iMac using Parallels.  It works fine for me.  I do not use the COM ports.  You don't need a com to ssh port.  SSH uses the network, not a serial port.  I think one of the videos showed how to use a com port for your installation of the NIC program.  You don't need to do.  You can get the network IP configuration using a HDMI monitor and a keyboard.

  • Confused over the upgrades and full versions for Windows 8 on a virtual machine

    Hello

I am wanting to legally install Windows 8 or 8.1 on a virtual computer. When I look at the Microsoft pages only, they seem to offer Windows 8 one update and I can't find a way to the purchase of a previous version either. Is anyone able to point me to an explanation in plain English what I should buy.

    Thanks for your help.

If you need to install Windows 8 in a virtual machine, you must purchase the full version of license OEM System Builder. If you need to install Windows 8.1 in a virtual machine, you can buy the license of retail sales (which is a full version) or OEM System Builder License.

  • Windows on VM - says my copy of Windows 7 on the virtual machine is not authentic

I have the Virtual Machine on a Mac and am running Windows 7 on the virtual machine.  I get a message that my copy of windows is not genuine, so, how do I get a product key.
I get a message from Microsoft that this copy of Windows is not supported.  If I need to buy Windows overall, how can I download it to VM?

You can purchase a license for the edition you installed and change the key and activate it on the Internet.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/get-a-new-Windows-product-key

Click Start, right click on computer

    Click on properties

Scroll down to the Windows Activation

Click on the link "change product key".

Enter the product key and click next to activate via the Internet.

  • Run a Windows command on all virtual machines

Using PowerCLI, is it possible to run a Windows command on all virtual machines?  I would like to hiberbation disabled on all my servers as it is unnecessary and take up disk space.  Running powercfg-h off will do, but I really want to do it on all 200 of my VM.

I can't seem to find the option in group policy, so I was hoping that this could be an option.

The above posts are excellent resolutions. Here is another possible approach.

You can do this with a Powershell script. Something like this should work:

    1. The list of virtual machines:

SE connect-ViServer here VCenter server name

    $vms = get - VM

    1. If you have installed Powershell and PSRemoting enabled on each virtual machine, run the following:

    $vms | foreach-object {Invoke-Command - ComputerName $_.} Name - ScriptBlock {powercfg - h}

    1. If you have not installed Powershell and PSRemoting on each virtual machine, use WMI:

    foreach ($vm to $vms)

    {

    $vmName = $vm. Name

    (\[WMIClass\] ")
    (' $vmName\ROOT\CIMV2: Win32_Process "). Create ("cmd /c powercfg - h)

    }

You should probably use the WMI method since it is unlikely that all of your virtual machines have Powershell installed and configured for remote access.

  • Best way to use Windows Update - Primo

    Hello world

I just did a complete reset of my computer Windows 8.  I want to upgrade to 8.1 Windows since everything is wiped clean.  But first, I have apparently 165 important Windows updates installed.

The last time I tried to do a reset before Windows Update, it kept "ghost" return.  So I gave up and never tried.

I have some free time and would really like to do this work.

Right now, I'm just let do it's thing by downloading everything in bulk and for the best and the worst with the exception of hope so.

What is the best way to get all the updates to cross?

NOTE for Windows Customer Service to transmit to one who can do something about it - Windows Update is one of the most AGGRAVATING on Windows things.  I have never run on any computer or OS, I had, but keep the faith that one day that will change.

I am trying to increase the C drive 10 GB to 15 GB on our VM virtual Center. Is this VM on an ESX 3.5.0 host 213352. I went to change the settings on the machine virtual and changed the drive C 10-> 15 GB vmdk. No problem. I then connected to the virtual computer and went Mgmt of Windows disk that shows the C drive in NTFS base 10 GB with a 4.99 GB unallocated volume space beside him. I then went to Diskpart and entered the command line and selected the C volume range. I received the following error message "the volume you have selected cannot be extended. BTW - the page file is located on drive E and not on the C drive. This virtual machine has C and E only.

I used the VM converter in the past, but it will not work in this case because the VM I want to choose to expand the C drive is the virtual Center VM. Any ideas on why diskpart will not work? Other solutions? Thank you!

  • Install Windows XP on a Virtual Machine in Windows 8

I tried to clone an installation of Windows XP on a DELL portable computer that almost died of old age in a Virtual Machine on my new computer Windows 8.  Windows 8 will not work some software I need and that you've used for years on the old laptop.  The installation seems to work until I log on the virtual machine.  Then a window pops up saying that I have to activate the Windows installation.  I tried to use the activation code I got from Dell, but Windows does not recognize it so I went to the phone and Windows system does not recognize the code that shows my installation.  Is it possible that I can get this facility enabled?  I'm not going to update my old software and I want to use this virtual machine to run older software that are not compatible with Windows 8.

It seems that Microsoft doesn't sell XP more.  I have a Windows XP disc that is not way OEM before SP2 is out, but I want to keep all my software from the recent to install without having to re - install some programs of 20 or 30.  Can anyone help?

You changed and added this part around the same time I posted my other answer.

The CD is not everything you need - you need the product key.  You have the product key?

If yes - you can integrate the SP3 in Windows XP's media retail, you have (not updated, full retail) and then use it to perform a REPAIR installation with your product key found.

  • Can't access file system host (MAC) shared in VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client when wanting to create a VMware image (Windows 7 in Parallels virtual machine running on a MAC) for the option of machine Powered On.

File HOST (Mac) system is currently shared in the Parallels virtual machine and is accessible through Windows Explorer and works correctly in the Virtual Machine environment, however, after installing vCenter Converter application on the Windows virtual machine these shared folders are not accessible from the conversion tool in the selection of the target destination of the file VMware (s). I can't select an existing folder on drive "C:" to write the image so that there is not enough space available for the VMware image and it must be written in a different file system, while the image is being created.

Anyone know a way around it to show the target to write the image on the host (MAC OS) file system or is it a bug?

Thanks for the reply.  It seems that the maps are not displayed if they were created as actions by the hosts.  When I created a mapping directly from Windows, then this mapping appeared and the conversion worked fine.

  • How to reinstall the OS on a virtual machine in the virtual machine Linux drive?

    Hello

I have problems reinstall OS in a VM Linux (on the Linux host).  I change the CD/DVD (IDE) to connect to an ISO file, save and then play the virtual machine.  I tired send "Ctrl + Alt + Delete", running after stopping, etc., but it will not re - install the new ISO standard (each time it's booting of the operating system already installed).  How can I force the VM to re - install a new ISO standard?

    Thank you.

    Hello

You can delay the start of the machine, press ESC at startup and choose to boot from the CD to the virtual machine. You can also change the boot order in the Bios to automatically boot from the CD first.

Take a look at the following kb for details on how to change the way the virtual machine starts.

    Good luck!

  • Is impossible to activate Windows XP on a Virtual Machine...

I just installed Windows XP on a virtual computer by using Microsoft Virtual PC. However, when I try to activate the system, I get a message that online activation is not available at this time. I tried to use a shared network (NAT) with the host computer and using the adapter wireless with Virtual PC. And with both I can connect to the internet and surfing the web, but whenever I try to turn it on stays of connectivity verification.

Use the phone activation option. If the automatic phone option fails, wait for a man to come online. Since the product key for XP you installed in the virtual machine is not used anywhere else (it is correct?), humans will activate your installation. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!
