Best ways to backup free ESXi?

Hello

I think to use the free version of the ESXi (4.0) for some production VMs, namely a file server, but my biggest concern is to make sure that they get saved correctly. I know with the paid version of vSphere, you get the best options of backup, but what are my options with the free version? I hope someone can answer these questions for me:

(1) if I want to just manually copy the virtual files that make up the VMs system (VMDK, vmxs, etc.) to another location on the network, do I need to stop the virtual machines before I can do this? What happens if I copy during the race. He let me same? If I have these copies, and my ESXi host goes down, I should be able to put them on another ESXi host by adding to its inventory, correct?

(2) I read on a tool called ghettoVCB, but documentation looked pretty scary. For someone new mV, it's something that I could easily set up, or that it will be a nightmare to make it work?

(3) level backup of files what? I have backup exec, but it seems that if I need to buy the $3 k if virtual agent I want to use for the VMs backup. This may be a question for the Symantec forums, but backup exec will allow me to do just granular base backups of a virtual computer, agentless files? In other words, if I do not need to backup the VMDK, etc and just want to save the data of the company on the virtual file server as if I had to back up a physical box, can do this without the virtual backup exec agent?

(4) ideally I think I would like to manually copy files VMFS from time to time to have an image of the operating system of the virtual machine, then do file level backups every night with backup exec. That sounds like a good plan, or is there a better way to do it? If so, any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you

Josh

Take a snapshot, make the copy, and then remove the snapshot to save the VMDK.  Which freezes the entire file in time whereas it is copied (but does not stop the virtual machine).

Backups at level OS using BackupExec are very good.  "Bare metal" restore will be longer.

Manual copy of the VMs would be fine or use ghettoVCB as you read.  Don't forget to keep copies of your VMX files because these can become corrupted in certain situations.

  • What is the best way to backup of virtual machines on a standalone ESX with the data store local

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    Thank you!

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

  • Best way to backup to clean install XP

For everything that you XP pros out there-apparently, I need to do a clean reinstall of my XP pro in order to mitigate the problems and I was wondering the best way to back up files and settings? I train utility backup of Windows file and Settings Transfer Wizard. External recording on HD been wondering way to restore files, settings, Favorites, etc. A representative Dell told me that FASTING is not good because it can restore the things that are corrupt and dup both the problem.

    Thanks, Van

First of all, Clean installs are rarely necessary. What are your specific issues? If all goes well, we will guide you to solve them quickly. :-)

That being said, the data backup is an excellent idea. You should always do this regardless of whether or not you are about to perform a clean installation. For now, why not simply use Windows Explorer to copy your files on the external hard drive? You probably already know where most of them exist. Your IE favorites are probably at this place:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ [user profile] \Favorites

If you use Outlook Express for e-mail, you should look at this page:

    http://www.insideoe.com/backup/

By default, your OE message store is located here:

Bank of C:\My Outlook Express Identity\Message

By default, your OE address book is located here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ [user profile] \Application Data\Microsoft\Address guide\ [user profile] .wab

In the future (coming soon!), you should really consider a regular backup strategy. The default backup program Windows XP (ntbackup) is old and has its limits. I would avoid it. It would be much better to use an imaging program like Acronis True Image Home or Paragon backup and restore.

  • Best way to backup virtual machines?

I'm under Fusion 2.0.4. I recently acquired an external hard drive and I want to backup my virtual machines. I watched the tutorial of Fusion which suggested using Time Machine, but I read that restoring a virtual computer from a TM backup could cause problems. Is this true? If so, should I simply create a file duplicate and save that to the external hard drive? What is the best way to back up the virtual machine?

Note: I use shared folders to save the documents, photos, etc., but would like to save the entire guest operating system.

First AutoProtect is not the same, nor intended to be a copy of backup of the virtual machine and Time Machine knows a lot of backup and restore of Virtual Machines under certain conditions and should not be relied on as the only method of recovery.

While Time Machine can back up and restore a virtual machine with success there are a number of conditions that can cause this to fail and without warning, and therefore it is not considered reliable for backup of Virtual Machines under normal conditions.

AFAIC backup is valid that a virtual machine is when it is done with stop the Virtual Machine, not suspended and closed merger and the entire Virtual Machine is copied to another location in which one has a little bit duplicate of the complete set of the VM total at this point in time and nothing less realized by Time Machine by manually and not separate and apart from the files of the time Machine.  Note: The script process is providing that the conditions are met.

  • Best way to upgrade to ESXi 4.1 ESXi 3.5

    Hello

I have two hosts, one with ESXi 3.5 (free) and the other with ESXi (free) 4.1, both with local storage. I am bit concerned by the attempt to upgrade the 3.5 host, as I don't want to meet problems due to upgrade failures. Instead, I want to move the virtual machines from the host 3.5 to 4.1 host. If everything works, I can do a clean installation of the 4.1 on the old host, and then replace the virtual machines. I won't lose anything.

Maybe I'll buy a license of vSphere Essentials, but I don't know if this will help me moving virtual machines as the host 3.5 will be without a permit until the migration is complete. Am I wrong? Is vSphere Essentials enough to make migration cold also?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

    Hello

You can try one of the methods would be to:

Stop the VM on the host 3.5

Using the data browser (or preferably Veeam FastSCP) store copies the virtual host 3.5 computer records to the 4.1 a

Save the virtual machines on the host 4.1 and light to ensure that they transferred ok before you wipe the host 5.5

Rebuild your webhost 3.5 with 4.1 and once done just reverse the procedure to bring virtual machines

This saves any expenditure and should work just fine. =)

    Hope this helps

  • best way to backup vms to local storage

    Hello

I have an ESXi 3.5, which must be reinstalled with 4i version, but it is necessary to backup and later restore 3 VMs on that host. Is it possible to stop VMs, copy via SCP all folders (with files) to any other disk of windows (in the form of files) and after having reinstalled to ESXi4 copy him on newly created datastore? It will work without problems? If I understand well if I go to virtual machines and add to the inventory of these "backup" files then this VM will boot without any problems?

    Thanks for any response.

After the resettlement and return the copy all files via SCP to the new data store and then search for VM, choosing good files VMX, which adds VM inventory and let it run without any problem?

Yes, make sure you only back up (and restore) the entire VM folder.

  • What is the best way to "clean up/free space" on my computer? Thank you

What is the best way to clean/free up space on my computer?  Even do not know where to look to see how much space I use... Thank you.

A loss of main surface within each user profile would be penchant of EI for the storage of copies (or much) of almost every web page, your friend has already visited.  Try to reduce the amount of temporary Internet files put in cache, which is huge by default.  I always bring it back to a maximum of 50 MB.  In Internet Explorer, click on tools > Internet Options > general, temporary files > settings.

Same principle for the Java cache. Start > Control Panel > Java > temporary Internet files > settings.

The System Volume Information is the folder in restoration of which WinXP system feature stores information to retrieve errors.  By default, Windows XP sets aside a maximum of 12% of the size of the partition to store the information of the System Volume, but the amount of space reserved for this purpose can be adjusted by the user.  Start > all programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > System Restore Settings, select the relevant partition and click settings.  If you don't want to use the system at all, restore simply to turn off System Restore (start > all programs > Accessories > system tools > system, System Restore settings restore) and restart.  This will remove all your Restore Points, thus freeing up hard disk space.

An another great space waster may be trash.  By default, it takes up to 10% of the capacity of your hard drive. On today's big hard disks, it's a lot of waste.  It can be set to a lower limit by right clicking the desktop Receycle Bin icon, select Properties, and using the scroll bar to reduce the maximum size to something more reasonable - 1% to 2% should be more than enough space.

  • Backup of ESXi host configurations

VMware Assistant management scripts? Some 3rd party management software tools?  Your ideas / popular experiences. (In this environment Auto-déployer has been dismissed as a management option)

  • Best way to reinstall Windows 7 on a virtual machine

I have 2 questions, first, I'm sure I know the answer to but it leads to the second.

I have a new Windows 7 Machine. I have played with it for a bit, but now intend to install server 2002 on it, then use W7 in a virtual environment.

    The questions are:

    1. I'm pretty sure of browsing the forum, I know the answer to this and its no.! but that's still...

My original plan was to install the server and use dual boot but use the virtual w7 on a daily basis, rather than one that came on the machine - if I wqill need it is longer than the 30 days grace period. Can I use the same key for both because they are both on the same computer / hardware? Most of the forums seem to say no, but also a distinction that it runs on the same computer / hardware - it will be - only virtually.

I can use other virtual machines to win 7, but these will be tests for the main environment and will be very temporary.

2 assuming that the answer 1 is not and I'll have to install the server and then use my W7 key on a new installation in a virtual environment, what is the best way to backup everything on the current w7 machine and restore it to the w7 machine I create virtually?

Note: I have 2 drives - 500 GB which I intend to mirror using the server (and then install another but that is not relevant to this ATM), but in the short term can I save photos, music and other files I want this player. It is mainly the files and installs them, personal settings, home group game settings etc... I want to be able to restore to the new environment of W7.

Even if the answer to 1 is Yes, this information would be useful as I would like to create my current environment of W7 on the virtual machine.

I will note that I have legal and valid product (in reason, where I work) keys for:

    Server 2008

Windows 7 Professional x 2 (even if I intend to use one on a separate physical computer - I only want one on the machine that I put the server use)

    Thank you

    Thanks for the reply.

The goal is to learn windows server.

I have a knowledge base of what I do, but only with A + / N + level but who seek to expand and learn things myself.

I have 5 machines in the House and want to create a windows network using the server. The main engine was purchased for this purpose.

Can I install server on a virtual machine in win7 then? That would probably make life easier

Yes, you can. Do you intend to set up as a domain controller and have the clients to connect to it? If you want clients to connect to it as the other 5 machines which must run a Windows business edition, then its better you double boot with the existing installation of Windows 7. It is also very easy. He just set up a partition in Windows 7, boot from the disk of Windows Server 2008 R2 and select the partition where you want to install Windows Server 2008.

Win7 is pro - these two licenses - with the machine, I bought. It came preinstalled but is a clean install without all the dell tools etc... Add.

The other has not been used or turned on but goes to another machine.

    Is Server 2008 R2

I know and understand the process of rearmament, thanks. The goal is to create a network within the home and begin to define AD profiles, use the server as a proxy and whole ton of other plans.

I understand the potential challenges, I have created for me but I wanted to understand the best, legal way to go on this issue.

I have a product key for server 2008 - I'm not trying to use the same one for server and win 7.

Recommended or not, that's what I asked at the start - backup current win 7 and restaurant then in a virtual machine created on Server 2008 possible?

No, it will not work. As suggested, for your test environment, its best you dual boot.

  • Best way to store data on local RAID

    Hi all

Simple question for you, I'm new to vmware and I whant to be sure that what is the best way to set up my server.

I have a proliant dl380 G5 with 5 HD SAS300G. Idon't know ask another external to associate with this server hardware.

What is the best way to configure vmware ESXi 3.5 and my different raid for 800G of file storage and 300G the operating system image.

I read on LUN RAW but I can't select it in my ESXi (because I have no san or because its esxi?)

    Thx for the help.

    AlX

5 x 300 GB drives, I'd say you're having trouble to adapt to your VMs on here. If you use RAID-5, which will allow the failure of disks 1, you get 1200 MB of storage (a little less when formatted) ask for 1100 MB, but then you will need enable General newspapers and fresh VMware vswp such as snapshots. I would like to add another disk of 300 GB in this Bay RAID-5 if possible.

If the virtual machines are intensive disk, you should consider the requirement of IOPS / s. If these are 15 k disks, the table should give you around 600IOPS - is it enough?

Just format the local array with VMFS and use VMDK for all machines

I don't want to see TM this time I just spend all my photos/videos from my Mac to the HD and much obviously, then continue to do that in the future.

What is the best way to do it? Also, taking into account future backups, I don't want to reproduce the photos/videos.

    At soon all, Russ.

You can exclude files/folders in Time Machine preferences.

However, I do not understand what you want to do in the future. If you only have photos in one place, you do not have a backup.
