You start with a chkdsk/r from the XP Recovery Console.
Here's how:
If you have no XP bootable media (or aren't sure you have) create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and do not forget.
This is not the same as recovery disks that may have come to a store to purchase the system.
You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burn it to a CD.
The ISO bootable image file you need to download is called:
xp_rec_con. ISO

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on a computer running.
You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD-ROM drive as the first device to boot instead of the hard drive. These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load. If you miss it, you will need to restart the system again.
When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:
Press any key to boot from CD...
Installing Windows... going to pronounce.
Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.
Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)
You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).
You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS. It's the same as the
C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.
The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

A good idea before you start things must first verify the integrity of your file system by using the chkdsk command.
In the command prompt window, run the chkdsk command on the drive where Windows is installed to try to fix any problems on the afflicted player.
Running chkdsk is fine, even if he finds no problem. It won't hurt anything to run it.
Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:
CHKDSK C: /r
Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.

Did you take a glance at this KB article? It's a bit overwhelming, and it requires you to have an XP installation CD and if you have one, it better be the same Service Pack as your Service Pack installed or things will go back. However, the MSE was using the word "try" and that does not sound very confident for me-, but feel free to try.

I have a windows vista Ultimate edition with alienware m15x, I caught a virus there is in a picture, I caught a virus w/no antivirus, I system restored my laptop thinking that I could get rid of the virus, now I got a blue screen with the error 0x0000c1f5 code, I can't start the computer in safe mode it restarts just after being on crdsk for a while, I try to system restore but it goes back to the blue screen, I hit f2 and get the bsod screen. Is that what I can do there or anywhere?

You can try to boot from the Windows Vista installation disc and try to perform a startup repair.

If the faulty startup repair, then try to run a disk check.
Note: When you run the disk check, there are chances of losing data if you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.
a. Insert the installation disc.
b. restart your computer.
c. click on the Start button, click the arrow next to the button lock and then click on restart. If you are prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or a DVD, see the documentation provided with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings. For more information, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.
d. choose your language settings, and then click Next.
e. in the System Recovery Options menu, click command prompt
f. at a command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER
Chkdsk /f /r X: (drive letter)
Note: When you run the checkdisk, there are risks of data loss you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.
g. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.
h. restart the computer and check.

I suggest to insert Windows 8 Preview Release installation media and then follow these instructions:
a. click on repair your computer.
b. click Troubleshooting , and then selectAdvanced Options.
c. click on command prompt and type the following commands and pressenter after each command:
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
d. restart the computer.
e. check if the problem persists.

I have an Inspiron running XP Media Center edition. Something strange happened last night where the power was interrupted during the closing down and the laptop has become something weird Media Center Genuine Advantage. I don't know what it was, I was half asleep at the time.
In any case, this morning, I can't start the laptop. It brings me to a screen where I have the option of waiting for Windows to start, start Windows normally or start in safe mode. I searched a bit, and seems the only solution that I found the recovery utility, but I have a few questions about it. One, I lose my data? Two, it says it's for advanced users, and I'm not an advanced user. I'll be able to use it? Three, you need a CD of the OS to run it, and I don't have a CD when I bought my Dell laptop. I don't think I even offered to pay extra to get a copy (it was awhile I bought it). Can I get a CD of the OS through Dell? I know that you can burn a backup copy of Windows, but I only learned after the beginning of this problem.
