Bug in Windows Live Mail, sorting of columns

you want to apparent bug report in Windows Live Mail Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922):

When in the folder "sent", by clicking on the To: column head seems to sort e-mails by subject rather than on the field.

Using the "Find message" box is a possible substitute for sorting by
the column is.
It's better than doing a manual search.

Thank you, Gary.

Ugggggh.  I use this sorting a LOT of functionality.

To refresh, FWIW: this behavior is not unique to the "sent" folder.

  • Windows Live Mail will not sort in alphabetical order 'To' column

In Windows Live Mail I can click on the header of column and sequence or sort by alphabetical order of most of the columns, but for some reason, it will not sort in alphabetical order the column 'To '.  Some names are grouped, but a lot of seemingly random order occurs.  How can I fix?

    Hi Scott,.

Unfortunately, this is a known issue that has yet to be resolved.  See http://www.windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?threadid=7cd886b5-6726-4ef8-833d-6d19819be8ec where it is attached the answer someone of Windows Live (not only a poster regular like most of us) almost exactly the same question as you - and the answer is quite recent.

Here's another thread in the same pregnant responded with an MVP who admits that it is a bug that has yet to be resolved.  http://www.windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?ThreadId=c601b584-4448-4564-9702-64065e86b1d5 although this dates back to January, apparently he still is not resolved and requires the latest version of the product as well (so that they really have trouble with this code).

Sorry it wasn't the answer you wanted to hear, but it's something that you just need to treat before iti is resolved.  I would put a bookmark on the page of main support of these links (click back until you get there) and periodically check to see if a solution has been found (or perhaps a work around).  In fact, any questions about Windows Live Mail, you would do well to post in this forum instead of here because they are much more experienced with it, aware of the problems and solutions and quite simply have more people with greater expertise on this product if you are likely to get a better response and more quickly (or even find the solution by searching on the solution and then site forums).

    Good luck!

  • Windows 2010 Live Mail loses attachments and sent box, Windows Live 2010 cannot sort by COLUMN by order alphabetical-how to to back to the old Windows Live Mail

After Windows 7, computer portable 64-bit Windows Live Mail update to version 2010 in fall 2010, some attachments fail to my computer.  I can see them at the opening of mail on the work of the Windows XP computer, use comcast web mail, so I don't know the attachments exist.  When I get home and open it with Windows Live Mail, the message through (comcast), and the attachment is missing.  Can I go back to an older version of Windows Live Mail because I have attachments on the same computer.  Second problem: in letters, I can't sort messages sent by COLUMN.  They always sort by DATE, even if I want to sort by TO.  This isn't a problem in the IN box.

  • Windows live mail 2011-sorting of mail

My OS is windows vista 32-bit sp2.  I have windows live mail 2011. This has recently been updated to 2009 when I installed a windows update that includes updates of windows live essentials.  I don't know if this problem appeared at this time or not as I just noticed. Problem is that when I check my email list and I want to sort on the column, it will not be. There he performs a sort on the column of the object. The "arrow" appears in the column to watch either ascending or descending, and messages are not sorted by the column's.  I tried to sort on the column of the object to see if it would then sort by the column to, but he did not. I tried to close the output of WLM and opening it again, which was not resolved. I went to the display option in the toolbar access and selected for the type by option but that is also not sort by To.  Ugh.  It's complicated!

  • My Windows Live Mail is sorted in alphabetical order by family name, but now, when I add a new contact, it is positioned at the top of the list instead being placed in the right place alphabetical.

My direct mail is sorted in alphabetical order by family name, but now, when I add a new contact, it is positioned at the top of the list instead being placed in the right place alphabetical.  How to load the list of contacts to organize all contacts, including contacts, in alphabetical order by family name?

E-mail address is removed from the privacy *.

My direct mail is sorted in alphabetical order by family name,

It is not clear what you mean by this statement.

    • There is an option in the contacts window in kind (names) of > name -is that what you mean?
    • Or that, when you open / switch to the contacts window, you see a list sorted by last name?
    • Or that when you click on to... or start typing in the to... box in a message composition window, you see a list ('contact selector') sorted by family name?

Only in contact with an e-mail address will appear in the "Chooser". The list includes names in alphabetical order. For contacts with a first name and a registered name , the list will be sorted based on the preference granted to sort by in the Contacts window. Contacts with multiple email addresses will appear once for each address with the address in brackets after the name.

Name is a special value built by WLMail contact data fields. It will consist of the first match found during the analysis of the data fields in the following order:

    1. Nickname
    2. First name + last name (in the order specified to sort by in the Contacts window)
    3. First name or last name
    4. Company
    5. E-mail address
As you start typing in of... box, WLMail will present a list of matching entries in your contacts list. You can start typing username, first name, first name, company, e-mail address to a contact or any significant word in the Notes field for this contact. So, if you type bil, for example, the list that appears will include
    • any person whose nickname starts with Bil, e.g. Billyboy
    • any person whose first name begins with Bil, e.g. of Bilbo Baggins
    • anyone whose first name begins with Bil, for example Jim Bilko
    • everyone whose company name starts with Bil, e.g. Billingsgate Market
    • everyone with an address of e-mail from bil bil or just after a period or the ' @' symbol, for example "the bilbo at hotmail dot com" or "jim to billingsgate dot com" or "jim.bilko at hotmail dot com.
    • all categories whose name contains a word starting with bil

If this does not solve your problem, please post your question in the forum dedicated to contacts in Windows Live Mail.

  • Windows Live Mail does not sort messages by date

Specifically the new Essentials 2011 - the old version would be sort the messages in the forums per day but I can't get the new version to do it properly.

Secondly - I hate the toolbar bulky at the top with all the huge (and mostly unused) buttons - the simplicity of the old version was much, much better. If theres a way to return to the old version that would be great.

Operating system is WIndows 7 Home Premium 64 bit if there is no difference.

    Thank you very much

A lot of people don't like the new Ribbon interface in Windows Live Mail 2011 and want to go back to the old version.  For more information on how to do this, please see the updated Windows prompting users to install Windows Live Essentials 2011 and follow these steps here:

  • XP: Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail - Emails have disappeared

My boss had some problems a few months where a piece of his e-mails have been deleted.  Like a year or two of a value.  He had a ton of emails in their Inbox.  Just recently he started having the same e-mail repeatedly.  I decided to download windows live mail and install it on his computer.  It is running XP.

I installed live mail.  He acknowledged the current e-mail account, he is using Outlook Express (POP3).  However, there is only the latest e-mail messages.  So, I went to windows live mail and click on file - import - and I imported Outlook Express 6.  He asked me what files and I clicked on the button that says it all.

He went through the process and declared finished.  It was supposed to put the files in the storage folder.  I check the records of storage and there is nothing in the Inbox sent items folder has its old emails in them.  I looked around, in the other Inbox for the normal email account there and there is nothing more.

I'm going to switch back to outlook express and its Inbox has no emails as well.  I'm like ooohhhh _.  If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

I don't know if it compacted emails in outlook express.

    Thanks in advance - James

For now, let's deal with Outlook Express.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

    Why mail disappears:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

    Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

    And see:
    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:
    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

    And backup often.

  • Windows live mail in Windows 7

I have a strange problem that happens periodically. But now he does not.

My email in box simply multiply. I have now 85 000 emails in my Inbox. Shut down and restart the computer, nothing helps.

In the past, the problem stopped, often for many months. But now it seems to be no end in site, and I use the e-mail address of my cable provider.

Any suggestions to stop this weird problem would be useful.

    Thank you.

    Eric K.

Connect to your cable provider webmail.  Delete virtually everything in your Inbox.  There is no point to leave that sort of thing.  Presumably, it has already been downloaded to your WLM.  If there is nothing to download, nothing will be sent.

WLM allows you to change the way the server handles e-mail he sends you.

    In WLM:

Right click on your email account in the left column (the line just above your Inbox), choose Properties

    Click the Advanced tab

Change the delivery as you please.  I would recommend that you check Remove the server after 30 days or less.  This will keep your webmail box pruned down to something more reasonable.  OR simply tell him does not leave a copy on the server.

Now, what I said does NOT address the question of why they keep be resent.  It is just to reduce the large number of them.

The problem of reference is either caused by Windows Live Mail or Internet mail provider.  Speak for them the problem and see if they can help you.

You should also try a repair WLM:

    1. Close WLM
    2. Control Panel
    3. Uninstall a program
    4. Windows Live Essentials-click and choose REPAIR, not uninstall.

Let us know if this helps you please.
