  I bought lightroom from Best Buy... he had the CD in there and I said 'I need the download version because I don't have a CD-Rom.' and they said 'don't worry, download instructions are also included.  However, I don't think it's true now that I opened the box.  Any ideas on how to operate the box version?  Or return to the store and buy online?

  I'm not really clear on the intent of your question.  If you can get the latest version you want to buy it.  When you go to buy, you should be able to see if it has an option to buy an update of the version you currently have.  I can't find the purchase page to check it out myself... I can only find the subscription option.

  but I think that your license is double platform.  Download the mac version and see if your serial number will be activated.  If this isn't the case, at least, you will have the 30 day trial to use while you wait for your platform swap.

  Tethered shooting works fine with Lightroom 6.4 on El Capitan.

  You can then go ahead and buy Lightroom and perform the tethered shooting.
