  Yes, I think you're onto something when you identify yourself as a registry problem. Maybe try another registry cleaner/checker? Maybe someone has published the specific registry fix.

  If you uninstall, restart, then clean the registry, then reboot, then reinstall, you may have the opportunity to fix the registry corruption.

Years of the use of previous versions of Firefox have conditioned me to open links in a new tab by selecting the second choice of right click menu without looking. After a week of trying to readjust in places reversed 'Open link in a new window' and "Open link in a new tab", I'm always unintentionally opening new windows instead of tabs every time after time. The point is, why should I have to adjust (or need a plugin external to solve your problem). YOU TEACHES ME HOW to DO THIS WAY, then why you changed it? Do you think that the reversal is most effective? A task force of new users select the new range? Do you have a taste of trial with Pepsi?
