When is it safe to remove the old updates and patches recover disk space?

I have a LONG list of updates from windows to windows xp, Media Player, microsoft, etc. in a way at the time where I got first computer and set on automatic updates. I'm sure that they consume valuable disk space but how do I know which ones can be deleted without problem?

Never. If you remove them, it defeats the purpose of the patch/security updates. Your calculation returns to a previous state vulnerable.

If you need space, get an external hard drive for all of your data.

  • Can I remove the old update files that have already been applied?

Good evening! I just a quick may be a dumb question... when I've updated my computer, if I remove the before update... like when a service pack number, as for example I downloaded the number of service pack 2 What do I do with the number of the service pack 1? delete it?

Depends on the operating system - Windows

Please note this is only for Windows XP and is not on Vista or Windows 7

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ who reside in C:\windows (hidden files) are window Hot difficulty updating folders/files) can be removed safely (providing ever, you wish to uninstall the updates). I recommend you leave these records for a period of at least one month to make sure that the update works correctly.

These updates can be removed individually or together. To learn more about the update/s go on:

NB: XXXXXX = the actual number, not to mention the "Q" or "Ko."

Once you have removed the uninstall folders/files, then go to control panel, add/remove programs. Select the title of the corresponding Windows fix on the folder/file of the patch you just deleted, and select Delete. You will get a Windows error. This is because you deleted the uninstall folder/files. Simply choose OK and the entry will be removed from the Add/Remove Programs list.

    For Vista and Windows 7

The update uninstall method in Windows Vista is quite different from that in Windows XP.

Uninstaller for each update folder no longer exists in Vista and the uninstall information is stored by the Volume Shadow Copy service.

After each update, Volume Shadow Copy service backup only the updated files.

So with Vista, it's a differential backup, rather than a full backup files for uninstall
    in Windows XP.

This safeguard mechanism is used to save disk space.

So basically, you are unable to manually delete the uninstall it from the computer.

After you are sure that you have copied all the files you want from this folder, use the Disk Cleanup Wizard to remove the folder.

    1. click on Start, type Disk Cleanup in the box start the search . In the results, click on disk cleanup right-click and select run as administrator option.

    2. in the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, select the drive where Windows 7 is installed, and then click OK.

You should not remove the update but you can delete the uninstall information.

I'll assume you mean the hard drive space.  You can also use Disk Cleanup to help the removal of junk. You can uninstall old programs is no longer, you use or alternatively, get a bigger hard drive.

  • Remove the old updates to free up space

Original title: updates for Windows Vista

I regularly receive notifications of a security update for Windows Vista a/o updated for Windows Vista a/o Update Cumulative security for IE9.  In my history of update, the update files earlier I installed the date 08/04/2007.

Given that these update files are large in size, how can I tell if a file update can be removed safely and not harm, no matter what, because it has become obsolete by a more recent update?  For example, I have several files update for "Security update for 2007 Microsoft Office System" and "Security update for Windows Vista" from 2007 to today.

Secondly, given that I am now using IE9, is it safe to delete all files updated: Cumulative security update for IE7 on Windows Vista, the security rollup update of IE8 for Windows Vista.

Thirdly, I do not use Outlook 2007 on my PC.  Is it safe to remove all the files update "Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 207 Junk Email Filter" and "Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter"?

    Hello, IVC,.

The files will review the little space on your physical hard disk, however, if you want to remove them you can use the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312 Disk Cleanup utility to remove the update files that are no longer needed.

  • Impossible to update - unable to remove the old version and install new - constantly asking me to close Firefox - it IS closed!

Having been invited to update I clicked Yes. Update failed. I tried to update manually on the site but had to close Firefox before you start - Firefox was closed. I tried to uninstall the old version so that I could install the new le neuf-- once again asked me to close Firefox before it could be uninstalled and again, it was already closed. Stuck now - no idea what it takes to get the new version. O.

    Hi Jean Claude,

Firefox can always run in the background. This happens sometimes. I suggest that you try to restart your computer, and then try to uninstall the old version. Alternatively, you can try to right click on the task bar, then opening the Task Manager. This will show you the list of processes currently running on your computer. If Firefox is running, you can manually kill the process.

There is also an article in the Knowledge Base containing information on what to do if the How to resolve the failure of the update of Firefox update error message. There is lots of useful information here.

    Hope this helps!
