  You can always make use of KB307545, if you start your computer from a CD with a system.  I find that free Linux Livecd such as Knoppix or Ubuntu works well for this purpose (if you use Ubuntu, make sure you have not install; instead of this, use the option "Try Me").  You download an .iso file and use the "Burn Image" of your burning program CD to create a CD bootable on another machine and then use this system to perform the steps of KB307545.  Linux has the advantage of protections on the folder "System Volume Information" don't get in the way and where you need to back up your system (before reinstalling Windows), it doesn't have the path of 256 byte limit that has Windows.

  After booting from the Live CD of Linux, start KB307545 of part 2, step 6.  You will use Linux to move, copy and delete files instead of command line commands, but you should be able to find a way to do it.  You won't have to restart between part 2 and part 3, but you need to remove the CD and reboot after completing part 3.  Make sure you complete part 4.

  If things are really bad, you can use the Live CD as a system for access to your files and back up an external hard drive, USB or network before you reinstall Windows.

  OEM version is less expensive, but keep in mind that once installed his attachment to this specific computer / motherboard you installed on. And Yes, you can buy and use the OEM version. More on this later in my post.

  Keep in mind that the transition from XP to Windows 7 requires a 'custom' / clean install. Therefor, all that the data files of your customers (Documents, Photos, music, Etc.) must be stored on external media before you start the upgrade. Applications must be reinstalled on the assumption that they are compatible with Windows 7.

  More important, you will need to check that there is no Windows 7 device drivers are available for the computer that you want to upgrade. If no driver for Windows 7 is listed on the web site of the manufacturer of the PC or the motherboard, then chances are Windows 7 will not work correctly.

  You can test the client computer by pulling on their hard drive, a device you have available and try to install a "Retail" Windows 7 version (make an installation without key, any key or activation is required and you have 30 days to test the whole) to see if it installs and runs correctly. In this way, you do not lose an OEM product key only to discover 7 do not play on their computer.

  Windows 8.1 is not in my view an acceptable solution for several reasons:

  (1) the user interface isn't somehow as Office XP.

  (2) drivers for Windows 8 are even less likely to be available.

  You can try to boot from the installation CD and select the repair option.  License of the OEM version is however considered as not valid once you replace the motherboard, unless it is the same brand and model as the original, then I wish you good luck!
