Can I get the certificate used to encrypt a file from a hard drive that has failed?

The files are still there, but vista is not able to repair the disk. I think that the the disk controller is not the real disk. The user who created the ecnrypted files is only on the failed drive. The certificate was not saved.

Wouldn't be much to encrypt a disk, if that were possible.  No, if there is no copy of the contents of the disk encryption key is lost.

"Deleting" a file does not actually delete it marks just the space
also available to be used. There are third-party programs that can
sometimes recover deleted files. The problem is that the space used by
the file is likely to be replaced very quickly, and it makes
    the unrecoverable file.

So your chances of successfully recover this file are decent if you
Try it again immediately after the deletion of it and go quickly
downhill from there. If you have used the computer since then (for
example to write this question and read this answer), your chances may
    be very poor now.

But if the file is large enough, it's still worth a try. Stop
using the computer in question immediately, if you have not done
already. Download an undelete program (and here's one:)
    http://www3.TELUS.NET/mikebike/restoration.html but there are several
others to choose from; Do a search) on a friend's computer (do not
it on yours because that would overwrite the files you want
Undelete) and bring it to you on a CD or thumb drive to try.

If that fails, your only recourse is to bring or send the disc
a company of professional file recovery. This kind of service is very
expensive and may or may not work in your case.

  • Cannot access the files from the internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead

I can't access the files from an internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead. I think that my files are still there, as shown in the volume of the player volume ~ 500 gb which is almost completely full. But I can't access most files, including documents and settings. When I took 'ownership' of the folder, I could open the TI but then it showed everything that was in my documents and settings on the computer file I used to open it, not the documents of the car.

Uhm... I think the issue here is a misunderstanding of what you watch.

If you want to access your files from the old hard drive - you need to look in the right place.  If the old system was "Windows 7", "Documents and Settings" is the * wrong * place to look and "Users" would be the place to go.

You * will * take ownership and change permissions on ALL (you want to propagate to all subfolders/files when do - to save time) in order to get them properly.

New-->: Windows Vista/7 would have your files located in the directory 'Users' of the root of the drive - and then under your username.

    • \USERS\\Desktop\
    • \USERS\\Downloads\
    • \USERS\\Favorites\
    • \USERS\\Documents\
    • \USERS\\Music\
    • \USERS\\Pictures\
    • \USERS\\Videos\

    ... etc...

Documents and settings to WIndows Vista/Windows 7 is a symbolic link and would lead to what you see if you tried to use it.

  • I encrypted my files on a hard drive external and lost

I encrypted my files on an external hard drive and I've reformatted my hard drive on my widows xp, now I get access denied when I try to access the files on my external hard drive. It can be recovered? I don't change anything on the external hard drive would have key codes have been stored on the actual computer or have it stored on the external hard disk where I have encrypted files? I change my username and password when I reinstalled xp.

The "key" to your files encrypted using the Encrypting File System (EFS) is stored in your certificate store, which is part of your profile on the Windows system drive.  The certificate itself is encrypted to your Secure ID (SID, which is a unique number created with your username) and your password in the user and who-knows-what else.  Whenever you use any encryption system, if you can't answer the question "Where is my stored encryption key", then you are begging to lose all your information.  When you destroyed your old system, you wiped out the encryption with her key.  Unless you can recover your system from a backup or "best practices" followed by backing up your certificate, I'm afraid that you have lost access to all your data.  Microsoft has tried very hard and succeeds in making transparent encryption keys - at the expense of people in your situation.

The following is required reading for anyone using EFS and he explains everything very well.  Pay special attention to the paragraph entitled 'Why you should back up your certificates' to the end.

"Best practices for EFS file system.

For the same reasons you have at the moment, I chose to go with the "Truecrypt" freeware as an instead of the EFS encryption solution.  The keys are in my head like a password and I have not lost all data encrypted in 10 years despite having Windows terminally to the crash from under me several times.

  • What is the best way to copy all the files from one hard drive to another?

Old disk 60Go new 320 GB drive.  I want to do the new replacement for the old disk drive.

Old disk 60Go new 320 GB drive.  I want to do the new replacement for the old disk drive.

    Use disk cloning software.

The safest way is to use an external hard drive enclosure to maintain the new disc during the cloning operation.  These come with interfaces USB or e-SATA to IDE or SATA interfaces for the drive and the computer.  Be sure to get the correct type.  If you have an available internal drive Bay, you can put the new drive it for the cloning operation, but do NOT restart with two connected drives.  After everything was settled down, you can mount the old disk of 60 GB inside, format and use it for storage of backup.

Cloning (copy to disc) software may have been bundled with your new drive or may be accessed free of charge from the manufacturer of the new command.

Otherwise, here are a few apps cloning that I have used myself or have been recommended by members of the community:

    Acronis True Image Home
    Casper
    Paragon Drive Copy
    EASEUS Partition Master

  • How can I transfer encrypted files from old hard drive removed (transfer windows easy?)

    Hello

I'm trying to get some files off my old hard drive encrypted. He has xp on it, and I can't start on my new computer. Since it is a separate, apparently, I can't do either windows easy transfer. Is it possible for me to locate the certificate and key, or to transfer files with the key and the certificate on my new computer (I have password from the old computer if I need that)? Can I somehow run WET on this hard drive for keys/certificates can be transferred. This seems to be a common problem from what I have read.
Otherwise, do you have ideas on how to start my old xp disk on my new system without reformatting?
Very important to get these files.
    Thank you!

First of all, I assume you mean encrypted files (EFS, Encrypting File System).  These files are encrypted with a key that is still encrypted in your system like a certificate.  In order to read your encrypted on any other system files, you must restore the certificate from a backup.  The short article is mandatory for anyone considering the use of EFS:
"Best Practices for encrypting file system"
Special attention to the subsection down titled "why you should back up your certificates.

  • Get the error code: 0 X 81000037 while safeguarding my hard drive Windows 7.

    Original title: Error code: 0 X 81000037

I've never had a success to the top of my hard drive in Windows 7 and after 3 years, I think it's time to figure out why. I get error code 0 X 81000037.

Windows backup failed trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes to back up. Please check logs in case any relevant errors.

When I entered the code on the MS site he gave me instructions on how to locate my junctions from the command prompt:

    DIR /S OF RANDOM

Then he gives me instructions on how to remove a mounted volume reparse point, but there are 2 things wrong with that.

    1. they do not tell you how to determine what junction to remove and

    2. they don't tell you how to get to the window 'Properties of sample Volume mounted' that you're supposed to do in.

Here is the URL see for yourself. https://support.Microsoft.com/en-us/KB/973455#bookmark-workaroundissue12

The event log said: "If the volume of the source or the destination is on a disk (of course, it is on a disk would it be what on?). My C: drive I save is internal my drive and my drive G: I am saving is a 500 GB external WD.) Run CHKDSK/R, and try the operation again. »

Anyway I'll run CHKDSK/R on both drives and, hopefully, by then someone will post a reply as to where I can find this mystery mounted Volume sample fenΩtre "PropriΘtΘs" who speak the incomplete evidence and perhaps a clue as to which junction I'm supposed to delete.

Yes - if you happen to have a drive WD their software is quite reliable and usable, and it's free.

For those who aren't, here's what seems to be a good alternative:

If you want a truly refreshing experience of backup image at least consider the free version of Macrium Reflect:

    http://www.Macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Think about what you are going to do one day if your hard drive failures or your system does not start, and you must rely on the backup/restore of Microsoft program and help you could get these committed Microsoft alleged 'experts' (not the same as volunteers in the community who are the real experts).

Then imagine the process of recovering your files or your entire system using software and tools to a company that specializes in backup/restore or using the tools provided by Microsoft.  Which company do you think knows more about how things like backup/restore and system recovery should work?

Imagine the support you would get from a company that specializes in the backup/restore software and that's all they do all day long.  You've seen the kind of support you get from Microsoft?  Without success, didn't work, etc.

Of course, you will get more features in the wages of Macrium version, but even the free version is superior to everything that Microsoft has to offer (backup/restore is not their business).

Install and test the free version.  If you don't like it, uninstall it.

    Vroom!
